I'm updating a review from a couple of years ago. Bird dog has really uped their game and their food and decor. Everything was Fantastic. My bride and I went there for lunch today and we were thrilled with the food and service. She had the Mushroom Reuben. It was huge and delicious accompanied by Rosemary seasoned fries. I had the Little Jerry Chicken Sandwich and it was delicious! Served on a brioche bun with spicy Nashville slaw and the most delicious pickles I've ever had. Deep fried to perfection! This is our go to spot for Saturday brunch. Pack your patience. You may have to wait for a table, but the service and tasty food will be worth the wait. Like all other reviews the cauliflower appetizer and shrimp grits was delicious. I tried something different having the halibut. It was excellent. We finally were able to eat at this place after several attempts. I had the steak and cheese sandwich with the pickled olives and other veggies that had great flavor and the steak was very tender. Do wish the bun was yeasty instead of a toasted sesame bun. BBQ kettle cooked chips were good. Hubby had the ham and cheese omelet that he says was superb! Sarah, our server was great making sure we were taken care of. We sat at the bar as the few tables in the place were full. We were able to watch the two men cook all the food and talk to them. I stopped in for brunch a few weeks ago after a vet appointment on the area and was delighted by the coziness and openness of this restaurant. I was greeted and seated in 2 seconds and had a tough time deciding on a meal. Everything sounded SO GOOD! I had the loaded hash browns and some coffee, but next time I think I'll go for a Bloody Mary. They had a really nice bar selection. The food was awesome and the service was great. I will be back. My only hang up is that I would like to take my boyfriend here sometime and he is vegetarian, but there is only like one dedicated vegetarian entree item that I don't think he'd go for. This is a fabulous little hideaway! From the service to the food to the bathroom -- I didn't want to leave! I was out on a mother-daughter day and Mom and I stopped here. Going out to eat is always an adventure for me because I have a severe allergy to artificial sweeteners. But our waiter was friendly and peppy and answered my questions in an inviting and open way that didn't make me feel stupid or an inconvenience when they were clearly busy. Mom and I ordered and then were entertained by this open-air greenhouse vibe with the short-order cooks hustling only feet in front of you and the smell of garlic in the air from the fresh cut and cooked garlic fries. Food: Chicken Confi: beautiful, crunchy sub bread with pull away cheese and juicy chicken. This is the kind of sandwich you wake up in the middle of the night and are angry you can't have delivered! The Mushroom Ruben: not for the fancy, a nice spicy saucy and nice juicy mushrooms -- this was a very filling sandwich and while it looks small, you can easily split it and then chow down on fries or chips. The Chips! The are BBQ home made chips -- they aren't oily or greasy and I just had to take some home to my husband who wanted to know, 'are there more?' The Fries -- If you like garlic, just order the fries. These fries are garlicy to almost spicy garlic flavor. The Bathroom -- this is by far the best restaurant bathroom I've ever seen! Every person who walks in starts laughing because it's been decorated with monkeys drinking alcohol. More important than the drunk monkeys, there are grab bars all around the toilet and room enough for a wheel chair or walker! Good Job! Just the best time and I can't thank them enough! Bird Dog was a real treat! We didn't know what to expect on a Sunday afternoon in Mattawan, but Bird Dog was incredible. Their space is bright, cheery, and friendly. We waited around 15 minutes for our table to be ready and were treated immediately to waters and an explanation of the menu from their wonderful staff. I settled on the double burger with their herb fries for my dinner. My wife got the barbacoa empanadas. And my in-laws got the shaved Brussel sprouts salad and a burger as well. The food was glorious! I could tell that loads of careful planning went into each menu item and that the owners/chef have a passion for local, seasonal ingredients. I was equally impressed both with the quality and taste of the food AND the warmth and attentiveness of their staff. It was a joy to see severs interact with regulars and first time visitors alike, asking about their families, weekend plans, and life in general. Let me first say....I live in Chicago and I actively crave this restaurant when I am in the area. There has yet to be a time where we have been in the area and did not go to Birddog. It's THAT good. We have been MANY times at this point, for brunch and dinner -- and have NEVER been disappointed. In fact, Birddog somehow keeps getting better with its rotating menu and stellar service. You cannot go wrong with drinks or meals. Tonight we had the spring spritz (sinfully delish, put it in an IV and hook me up), the lamb kabobs (a new addition to the menu, also delish); my boyfriend enjoyed the cod (it was sold out last time we were there and he very much enjoyed it this time) and while I frequently ask Wendy for her opinion on what to order, tonight she suggested combining the bucatini and a piece of blackened salmon (so amazing that the owner even wanted it!). We never know what the dessert of the moment will be, but so far we've never been disappointed (the carrot cake was the best I've ever had). We can't say enough good things. We enjoy the patio in the summer, the igloos or the bar in the winter, and have never had anything but wonderful service. It is a perfect place in Mattawan and we will continue to be loyal customers! Bird Dog from top to bottom is the most delicious, unique, down-home, yet swanky place I've ever been to in the area! I'd be shocked to know of any other place like this in comparison. They have a beautiful atmosphere that compliments the fine dining of something you'd get in Chicago but with the country-like Michigan hospitality vibe. Highly recommend anyone looking to have a girls night out (Like us!), anniversary, or just to treat yourself on a date. The cool part is that if you're comfortable coming alone, you can sit at the bar and not feel like a total loser! Drinks are off the hook too. You seriously can't go wrong with anything you order. Cooks changing pans and swapping sauces out just added to the noise of the other guests and the blaring music. We took a look at the lunch and brunch menu's for next time but don't think there will be a next time. $25 for two drinks(pre tip). Is this Manhattan or Mattawan? Not gonna lie they were tasty. But wow. It was so noisy in there. And it's unnecessary a few sound panels could make such a difference. Service was fine. We were greeted quick, received water, menus when we sat down. She was very patient as we perused the drinks and meals. I've read some other reviews and agree with a lot of them. The world needs more eateries like Bird Dog. Explored the towns of Mattawan and Paw Paw on a whim and we didn't regret it. Quaint building on a quaint street. Full house for dinner but we didn't mind the wait because of the conveniently located brewery right across the street! (Murray St) Bartender even recommended a specific dish while we enjoyed our drafts. Local support means all the difference. I can't tell you how many huge warehouse building restaurants and breweries we've gone to that just feel cold and empty. Not this place. You feel right at home.
