Interesting place. It's a walk up bar. You place your order then find a seat. The smashburger was awesome! One of the best burgers I've had in a while. It came with a nice helping of salad. They have several options on tap along with theit flagship beers , Two Hearted IPA and Oberon Ale. On a Saturday afternoon we were able to grab one of the few open tables. You order at the bar for drinks and food and they bring food to the table. My husband had the Flyover Lager and and Two Hearted Ale, and I had a cider. The cider was very dry . For food my husband had the deviled eggs. They were topped with chives. We split the Pimento Melt based on reviews . It was a double smash,burger topped with thousand island dressing and. pimento cheese. It was topped with so much pimento cheese and thousand island it overpowered the burger. First time here-- stopped in for dinner and really liked the OG craft brewery vibe of the grounds. Heads up that parking is limited in a small lot but plenty of street parking a few blocks over. There was a concert going on too so there was a good sized crowd. The goofy part of the large dining room that you seat yourself, which makes it the lord of the flies version of eating out. Hovering near tables that appear to be leaving soon is for the birds. Other than that of course the beer was great -- Oberon Light for this guy with the popcorn and deviled eggs apps to start. Bell's was a bucket list place for me to visit so when I came to the Kalamazoo area, I knew I had to stop in. We came a for a quick lunch and it was everything I hoped for and more. The inside was large, clean, and quiet. The staff was friendly and let us know we would order everything up at the bar counter and they would deliver the food directly to our table. On the tap menu they have plenty of options and you won't be disappointed. We stopped into the store after and they have some great Bell's swag options for a decent price. If you're in the area I would stop by, just be sure to park in their parking lot as the rest of the area isn't the greatest. read more

I'm a big fan of Bell's brewing. I can get it at home in New Orleans, their Two Hearted Ale is a standard which I believe all American IPA's are judged, and their limited release Double Two Hearted Ale is amongst the best beers I have ever drank. So you can see I was beyond excited to finally go to Bell's. We arrived a little after 11 on a Saturday and I initially thought it was closed because the parking lot was empty (it filled up while we were inside). We got a table, ordered some food and a flight. I was disappointed because they were out of everything that was taproom exclusive. So basically I drank a bunch of beers that I already had or can get in stores. Don't get me wrong they were all good but I want to try something new when I'm in a taproom. I also got a good salad for lunch (saving my calories for beer and all) The gift shop was large and full of all thing's Bell's. Delved into the beers of Bells once again. Steve and I had two different IPA's on this occasion and both of them were pretty good and solid. Bells is a macro brewery and while the flavors of the beers definitely reflect that they are in all actuality not all that bad to drink. One of the IPA's was I believe a flagship of the brewery. It's called Two Hearted IPA. This was one that wasn't too overwhelming and still had the characteristics that come with an IPA. Flavors to look for with Two Hearted are hoppy, floral and sweet. The IPA is light bodied which we can appreciate and smooth in body. The other beer that we had, also an IPA was the Change of Heart Experimental IPA #1- Cold IPA. Quite a title and I do love a Cold IPA. This one look for flavor notes of piney, dry hops, hoppy, sweet and clean. Nice second experience trying out these beers at the Cafe location! read more

I'm surprised I've never written a review for Bell's as I've been there several times over the years. Nate and I were in town for the weekend recently and we actually went to Bell's twice in two days. The first visit we shared a couple of flights and a snack, and then we did the brewery tour the next day. It seems that Bell's is pretty much always busy but it's a big space, and they have a nice outdoor beer garden for warmer months. We found a table right away and ordered their two options of flights. One featured sours and darker beers, and one was more of their mainstays. It was nice to be able to try some options this way, but I prefer being able to build my own flight. Not sure if that's an option here, but it was pretty busy so we just went with it. The menu has lots of tasty options! We went with the popcorn (brown butter, garlic, salt, and pepper) and a featured item, the brat. That came with fries or a salad which was nice - we went with the salad. I always love options. The beers were all tasty and I think you can find something for everyone there. The food was really good! I LOVED the popcorn. It's one of my favorite snacks and theirs is delicious. The brat was fine, it definitely needed a bit of a char on a flat top/grill. The next day we arrived for the tour right on time but the group had already started. That's okay as we caught up with them quickly. You can reserve online ahead of time but our group was only four people. (I'd still make a reservation. The tour is free.) The tour guide was knowledgeable and funny, and you get three beer samples throughout the tour. There's a store where you can get to-go beer and lots of merch - it has its own Yelp page! In town for a hockey tournament and decided to give this place a try due to the reviews. Was pleasantly surprised! There were three of us and we all got something different. I ordered the pork birria tacos, they were fantastic! Perfect taste and just enough spice! My only comment would be it's a lot of food so you could totally share! My husband got the wings, maple garlic and buffalo? Would not recommend those at all the smoke flavor was so overwhelming you couldn't taste any of the sauce. This is our second time coming to Bell's Eccentric Cafe. It was a Saturday afternoon and we expected a crowd. Luckily there was not a wait for a table. We ordered at the bar and we were buzzed with the pager when our food was ready. It took a little while for the food but luckily they have superior beer choices to pass the time away. Once we got the food, we realized that it was all pretty lukewarm and fries were cold. Bummer since the food took a while. I tried the Pierogi plate. It was pretty good. The sauerkraut tasted fresh, as well as the pierogis. The sausage was just okay and it did not taste like anything special. My kid got the grilled cheese and he loved it. My husband got the Falafel burger. He said it was pretty tasty but would have been better if it was hot. And the fries were yummy despite being cold. Overall, it was an okay dinner but you just can't beat the beer. We will come back again next time we are in town. Hopefully, the food will be a little better next time. read more

For 2pm in the middle of the week, we were surprised it was so busy. It felt very chaotic with all of the noise and we felt a bit awkward trying to navigate a new restaurant and find a seat, ourselves. I could be wrong, but it didn't appear that there was anything labeling tables (numbers, letters... something) and were left waiting 20 minutes before we had to flag down an employee passing by. Our waitress wasn't attentive and wasn't very friendly, she did the bare minimum... not including drink refills. The food was decent; we had nachos, beer-ria tacos, the smash burger, wings & honey cake to go. Fries were good, my husband thought his burger was fine. I thought the tacos were flavorful but needed to ask for some sour cream for a cooling factor. Nachos were fine, but all of the loose toppings (corn, beans, onion etc) made them hard to handle. Needed more cheese! Wings had pretty good flavor. Honey cake was good and held up well on an hour drive and several hours of refrigeration later. We didn't try the beer, which I think is what they're known for, so maybe that makes this place so good? We don't feel the need to come back. read more

Beers were good, food was not good. This review is about their food. Edible? sure, none of us are sick this morning. Seriously tho, literally everything was sub-par except possibly the burgers. Poutine? Omg outright terrible. Microwaved gravy from a can, mushrooms from a can, plain cheese "curds" from... I don't know what... piled on top of slightly underdone thin French fries and Bam! 2 minutes later it's inedible. We sent it back and the waiter was just like Yeah, that's the way it is here and rushed off. No offer to comp even tho, at a table of eight adults, none of us wanted anything more than a taste. And a couple took one look and were like No Thanks. Good call as it was Terrible. Oo, the onion rings look so good! PSYCH! Super super salty and the black pepper ale sauce is also way too salty; together its a daily sodium max intake 100% achieveded in one bite. Okay, let's try the wings! Um... ok, so of the 12 chicken wings (half chili lime half bbq), approx. 12 of them were dry and tough. Really disappointing. Decent sauces (both had good warmth) but c'mon, this isn't the 1800s, there are way better ways to serve wings than dried out and leathery on a cool plate. Beers were good. I try to come here once a year for some of the best beer made in Michigan, but the food was not good. the beer is great, and there is always a good selection. You can stand at the bar and sample away with little tastes. After figuring out what beer to start with at the bar, we walked to a table to order some food. We had the nachos topped with pork, Reuben fries and a chickpea patty burger. The nachos looked good but as we dug into them, they were kind of a let down. They appeared to be just topped with cooked meat and toppings and served up. What a you end up with is cold nachos. I think thy should put cheese in them and then baked till they are nice and hot. And speaking of cold, our fries were cold too. I should have sent them back but didn't. They should be made with fresh cooked fries, then baked with the toppings to melt the cheese. The concept was good though. Maybe the oven was down that day. We also had the chickpea burger which was very good for a non meat burger that my cousin wanted to try. the whole restaurant was cold, we sat in a couple places, I recommend turning up the heat a bit. I've been making deliberate trips to/through Kalamazoo from the metro Detroit area for some 10-15 years, and always looked forward to visiting Bell's. All Stouts Day in particular has been highly anticipated over the years. I didn't really "get" the remodel of the building...it looks like an abandoned warehouse painted by convicts on the outside, and the inside is paneled like an ivy-league library even though it feels more like the hallway at an old train station...except the people doing the tile were also doing drugs. Never really understood the seat yourself, get your own food model either. Clearly you've thrown a fair amount of money at making at least insular components of the place look fancy, so the food truck/drive through number concept is...lame. Yesterday I visited for the last time. I had planned on having my one dinner in town at Bell's, but it didn't happen, because after selecting a quiet table in the back, too much time passed before anyone acknowledged our presence. Several staff members were nearby - one even came to take orders from the table in front of ours, without so much as a nod. "Someone will be right with you" would have gone a long way. I'm over craft breweries, and I'm not going to pretend that Bell's was a culinary standout either. Season with poor service, shake well, and that's it. There's a good chance that's precisely why another beer-forward establishment set up shop literally across the street, and that's where I went. Had a beverage in hand in less time than it took for several people to ignore us over at Bell's, there were windows, and it didn't sound like a fish market because every surface isn't rigid. I'm sorry to say goodbye like this, it's hard to acknowledge the end of an era...but life gets a lot easier when you learn when to walk away. read more

Bell's is always a great time. The people are friendly and helpful, the beers are great, and the food is good. I love the chill vibe here, it's warm and cozy. The list of beers has a good variety, it's winter so it's a little too heavy on the malty stuff (red/amber, stout/porter vibes) for my liking, but I was able to find enough options for my flight. I've had all the regular line beers but found enough collabs and the first friday release which was also delicious to need the flight! I would love to see something simple like chicken fingers on the menu - I'm a chicken only person so I got the only chicken sandwich I saw on the menu. Not a fan of onions or the sauce it came with, but the staff was happy to help me with subbing to their house bbq sauce. Bell's is cool. It's a big place, and has a huge outdoor patio. The outdoor patio is great, kids and dogs are happy out there! We had falafel and Southwestern burrito (October special) both with the salad as the side. They were both really good. My son had a hot dog kids meal with fries, and he was happy. I've been to Bell's several times in the past but hadn't yet been able to enjoy a show there. However, this past summer my husband and I caught that The Baseball Project was there and, being huge R.E.M. nerds, we obviously had to go. The venue isn't huge and we got there quite a bit before the show started so we were able to be in the front of the stage. It was a bit surreal seeing all the amps and gear that I had only previously ever seen set up in huge arenas right in front of me in this smallish club in Kalamazoo. The space is lovely and felt cozy and warm with all the exposed brick and wood details. There's a bar in the back for concert goers and the stage space is blocked off from the rest of the bar and restaurant so there wasn't a lot of outside noise from people just hanging out at the bar or grabbing a bite to eat. The show started and it was wonderful. The crowd was great, the band sounded amazing, and we just had the best time. After the show the band also stayed to sign so we were able to exchange pleasantries and get our vinyl autographed (thought I was far too intimidated to say much more than a squeaked out "thank you!"). Everyone we encountered here, from bartenders, staff, security (my husband was given an OK by the band to photograph the show), and even the band themselves were very friendly. The phrase "good vibes" gets thrown around a lot but this place truly has "good vibes." My only wish was that they kept the kitchen open after the show. Because we got their early, dinner wasn't in the cards and I would have loved to stay and enjoy a meal after. read more

Stopped by Bell's Eccentric Cafe for a drink and a bite as we passed through Kalamazoo. The cafe has bar, dining, and outdoor seating. Please note that servers only staff the dining portion of the cafe. The popcorn was the perfect small bite to nibble on as we waiting for mains. The menu offers straight forward options as well as market priced summer specials. My BLT was delicious; the bacon was thick cut but still got crispy as requested, the bread was fresh, mayo not slighted. I get my blt's without tomato and it did slightly make the ratio of ingredients off as I had a lot more lettuce then bacon. The smash burger was cooked well, brioche bun was a great touch, and loved the sauces. Our only negative comment was that the fries were too salty for our liking. read more

Original Bell's fan since 1995 or so here. Even though it has been sold to a big, faceless corporation now, it still retains, through some Disney-style magic, the original feel of the Bell's of yore. Maybe because it's because it's still on the same property. I dunno. The food is always good and/or decent. We had the chicken sandwich and the cherry burger. I waited all day to eat when we were there and this time was yes and no. Fries were so-so, salad was only lettuce and some onions. Maybe it was a busy night but that never gets in the way at the hoppin' Ann Arbor and Ypsi places where I live so I don't know what was up with that lack of attention to detail. Maybe they figure they are handing food out to people that have zero history with Bell's. We were there to enjoy a show and it was great except for the occasional 20-something that doesn't know their limits or else imbibed something else before arriving. Great beer, great food....and oh yeah, GREAT BEER! I'm not from the area, but usually stop in here while passing through for a yearly trip in the Kzoo area. It's a large area (open space near the bar, plenty of seating in various locations). I usually arrive with a large group, so we're seated in the open space area by the bar. Most times, you walk up to the bar to order your beer and food. They'll bring the food out to you when its ready so you don't have to wait. In other cases we've been waited on as well but it just depends on how busy things are. As you can imagine for a brewery like this, they have a large selection of their own beer that they rotate through from time to time. Just because one is out of stock on a given day, doesn't mean that it'll be out permanently. The bar food they offer pairs nicely with their beers too. My favorite, which is currently a Special entree, is the chicken parm sandwich. It. Is. Massive. I took 6 bites into just the chicken before I hit bread, no joke! I've had burgers and other appetizers too. Fantastic service here, even on it's busiest of nights. Definitely make Bell's a stop within your evening for good food and drink. read more

I definitely wanted to visit Bell's Cafe because of my love for their beer. A few years ago, they changed the recipe for their Two Hearted Ale. I loved that Amber Ale which is now an IPA. Bells Oberon has become a new favorite. To my surprise, I enjoyed my favorite chicken wings in Michigan, Dry Rub Chili Lime and Garlic. We requested sides of Buffalo Sauce and Blue Cheese dressing. They were a wee bit spicy hot, so the waitress brought us slices of lime which enhanced the flavor and brought down the heat. The inside of this restaurant is really cool. Large poster size murals of Bells labels serve as artwork in the renevated, historic warehouse building with exposed brick walls and wooden floors. read more

If you're not, It's arguable some of the best beer in the world... not a typo... so climb out of the hole you've been living in and give it a shot. Two hearted or Oberon would be a good place to start. For those who know the beer and have made the pilgrimage to Kzoo to check out the home of Bell's - my favorite thing about Bell's is the beer garden, specifically going to a concert in the beer garden. Put it on your bucket list if you haven't done it. It's a very cool vibe that maxes out around 1000 people and is just everything. Now for the food - it's solid, worth making the trip for. We drove in to see the Mustard Plug concert, AGAIN, but came early because we wanted to eat their food that everyone raves about. If you follow them on social media they post so many delicious looking creations that look delicious. All the tables are first come, first serve and you seat yourself. Sadly, I hated this concept because we stood around looking for a table, and once we finally got a table we were sitting in other peoples trash. You order your food/drink at the bar and you get a pager for when your food is ready. The bartenders were very friendly, but looked overwhelmed with the large lines. I ordered the poutine, and fried chicken sandwich. I absolutely loved the fries and sandwich. Wasn't a fan of the poutine though. The gravy tasted burnt. I wound up not eating the poutine because of it. The beer is always good, and everything I've ever had here is pure quality. This time I went with a pomegranate vanilla sour. Tasty tasty tasty! Overall, This place is a wonderful experience. Live music, phenomenal beer, and good food. I built up this idea of the best food on earth which I think hindered my food experience. Food was still good aside from the poutine. Wish this place was closer to Grand Rapids so I could go more often, but it's definitely worth the trip. I'm thrilled we hosted a small board dinner here - it did not disappoint. The space is super cool! We kicked off with some apps - pimento cheese and a charcuterie board - both were perfectly on point. I stuck with a pint of Lager of the Lakes - easy to drink.
