I've reviewed this establishment before, it's still awesome. Wings are as good as ever. Get them plain with sauce on the side. Can't go wrong. They changed their poutine fries a bit which I don't think are as good. But you can get poutine tots which are banging. Beer is cheap. Wine is good enough and cheap with favorable pours. Located in Desoto, Iowa. From the time I came in it was great customer service that made me feel like I was welcomed. It was a bar feel for sure and they had two rooms. The food was pretty amazing and I got the burger and wings. I started going in there everyday on my breaks. It always costs me no more than $25. Highly recommend for a good eat. read more

The BEST! All the burgers are juicy, the tenderloin is on the list to be voted best in Iowa this year. Unfortunately they had to take hashbrowns and pancakes off the breakfast, but don't let that stop you from coming in! The tots are tasty and crispy and the French toast is the bomb. And being able to get breakfast all day now is available EVERY DAY!! The servers are fast and fun to talk to. The owners really care and love to hear from the customers. I love the "roadhouse" feel of this place. It's motorcycle friendly, with its own parking out front, separate from the large vehicle parking area, and has plenty of seating on the patio and the addition. Great for families. read more

What a nice surprise we had stopping in here. Its small dont get me wrong but that was part of the fun. Its sits in a great spot and was easy to get to. We had great food and the atmosphere was fun. Because of the size you must expect/predict that it can and will get busy especially with this kind of food. Stopped in here on the way back to the city. We had heard good reviews and decided we needed to try for ourselves. We showed up on a weeknight around 7:30. The place was mostly full with very few tables that fit 4 people. If the weather was nicer we did see a patio option. 1 bartender running around trying to help everyone. We are a team of 5 from Iowa. We were traveling through Adel for a work trip, when we all had a hankerin for some really good food after a mass. The priest suggested manna and quails. So, we went to Ambros. We all had very different opinions about the experience. Our aggregate rating was a 4.4. Below is a log of all our reviews. Please enjoy.... "Just ok. The service, ok. This small town has a gem of a restaurant that appeals to all with unique menu items that will blow you away yet have you wanting to return to try out more of their inventive menu. I'm a massive fan of how they treat everyone like family here. Their chili burger is made with such attention to every detail that it makes it out to be a sandwich standout. Typically any chili sandwich could be made into a pile but here they toast the bun, give you burger that seems smoked and well cooked to perfection.. alongside some optional onion and cheese they then stack it with such precision topping off the burger tower with the perfect chili topping above. If you can keep it looking nice and elegant - you have a gift. After a bite you won't care who's watching.. you'll be turned into a forever fan of this restaurant... just don't forget to order the fried corn nugget appetizer and tip the wait staff well. Stopped here with my fiancé, brother and sister in law for dinner on our way back to Des Moines. Parking lot was full. I was surprised how small the place was once inside. We were shuttled to a back corner around the bar. Place does have some outdoor seating, but inside there's bar stools and about 4 or 5 tables. Definitely cramped in there! Food was decent. Ate lunch here Aug 10, 2023. In the top 3 of best philly cheesesteak sandwiches I have ever had - fresh shaved roast beef. And I eat a lot of them while traveling. However, I did luck out because they don't do this everyday. I am gluten free so philly cheesesteak with no bread is my go-to when traveling. Service was good. read more

Helluva long wait, sodas ran dry, ice melted, sandwiches and fried potato chunks arrived cold. Party going on, so we hung in there like Iowans do. We stopped by this place on our way home from the Apple orchard with my family. Despite being more of a bar atmosphere they did have a kids menu and were really kind to my kids. Don't let the cheerful, white, crisp, and clean exterior fool you. Once you walk through the door, you are instantly teleported into a dark, dive bar. But any apprehensions are unwarranted since the clientele turns out to be eclectic with local families, tourists (us), a biker, and a little old lady. (But watch out for those little old ladies.) Lots of bar & grill fare: burgers, chicken sandwiches, chili, biscuits & gravy, and salads. Lots of appetizers, too: spicy wings, fries with various toppings (poutine), jalapeno poppers, and more. Plus, the well stocked bar has a large assortment of beers and hooch. But knowing that Iowa is famous for pork tenderloin sandwiches, my wife & I both chose it (aka 'Breaded Tenderloin'). Though it is often served 'naked' elsewhere, the Ambro's serves a HUGE tenderloin with tomato, lettuce, onions, and pickles which was a welcomed change. And it came with crinkle fries, which were also very good. Of course, beer swilling men are tempted to scribble on bathroom walls (like 'call Jenny at 867-5309'). To help avert the graffiti, a big blackboard is installed (strategically) in the men's room, complete with chalk. Loved the pork tenderloin sandwich. We'll be back. read more

So good! The salads were amazing and the wait time was nothing! I love it and it's a very nice and easy place to go to when you're hungry!

Saw a road sign for Ambro's Roadhouse in Desoto so decided to give it a try, glad we did. I had breaded tenderloin, huge - I think I will get 2 more meals from left overs! Husband ordered loaded poutine, also a huge portion; he even got a to go box, which he doesn't do very often. Nice small town vibe where many people knew each other. We stopped at Ambro's for lunch today -- food, service, and atmosphere were great. We had the breaded pork tenderloin sandwich and I traded out the fries for a side salad. The sandwich was delicious and huge! My husband and I could have shared it, but it was too good for that! Side salad was very generous with fresh greens, tomatoes, carrots and cucumbers. It was a casual and fun atmosphere. People at the bar, hanging out. Perfect also for couples and families. It's a small place but it was a nice day so they had their patio open. I have wanted to try this restaurant for a while. The white exterior of the small building deceives the nostalgic "biker-bar" appearing interior. Inside, you will find barnwood-covered walls, and a host of nostalgic motorcycle and other advertisement tins. The bar is adorned in diamond plate and orange-glow lights. There are multiple TVs strategically mounted high and a handful of bar-height tables in addition to the traditional bar. The fare is traditional burger, tenderloin & fries and well worth the visit. The waitress handled 4 tables and the bar solo with ease and was very attentive to our needs. The food was cooked appropriately and served prompt and hot. My only constructive comment would be to add a couple more items to the menu (pork chop/medallion, pulled pork, etc) as the bulk of the menu was burgers, tenderloins, and chicken. I really wish I could give the more stars, but a few things prevented it. I went in for the daily special. A wonton burger. The burger was thick and cooked perfectly, and came out on a nice pretzel bun. However the fries was disgusting. They were seasoned fries that were limp and undercooked, and it seems that some one then salted them b/c they were so salty, that I could not eat them even if they were cooked properly. I like my fries crispy.. My lunch bill was $12.71 for burger, fries and iced tea. That seems a bit pricy. $9.99 for a burger is at least $1.00 too much compared to other local hole in the wall eaterys. Then add $2.50 for iced tea ! This is not what I expect for De Soto, IA. What would have been 4 stars at $10 and change becomes 3 stars at almost $13.. They also do not have beers on tap, that is another bummer. The service was fast and friendly but I was the only one there. I will go back and try some other menu items, and maybe exchange something else for the undercooked overly salted fries. read more

I am a big fan of Ambro's. I used to have family in DeSoto and we would come to Ambro's Roadhouse a lot. Now I just go out to eat at Ambro's because it is that good. Everything I have gotten there has been top notch. The staff is very friendly and helpful too. The cheese curds are delicious! In the Winter, I love their Chili. The grilled chicken sandwich, tenderloin, mushroom & swiss burger are my favorites! I still need to try the 169 poutine. Don't be weirded out by the bikers in the summertime - it's a great place to get a great meal! read more
