I've been hearing the ads for BS on some of my podcasts. So I gave them a try. The restaurant is much larger than I expected but well layed out and nice bar (where I ate). Bartender was attentive and prompt. The fried cheese pickle egg rolls were delicious! Sweet potato fries were as good as any I've had. Water and ice tea as expected. Unfortunately, the mushroom Swiss burger didn't live up to my expectations for a place with "burger" in the name. Mushrooms and cheese were good. The burger patties were overdone and not much flavor. We have been there before with friends for drinks and enjoyed the restaurant and good service so decided to check out their burgers. We were in around 5:15 on a Saturday night and immediately seated in a large booth. Our server was friendly and attentive and efficient (checked in briefly 3 times and let us say if we needed anything) all throughout the meal. The burger menu isn't super extensive but satisfying to all palettes- a classic/simple/just the basics, to specialty (see picture). I did sample the means for other offerings and there were many diverse offerings. Apps and dessert tempting but all I was craving was a good burger. I wasn't sure about Mac and cheese on my burger but it was a nice addition. I took some off the burger and enjoyed as an extra side/ it was creamy and mildly flavor so as to add more texture than actual flavor to the burgers. I should mention I had not eaten all day as normally I could never eat two burgers, however they were more thin than thick and tasted perfect on what tasted almost like a steamed (and soft) bun. I enjoyed the signature pickles on the side and added a little signature bacon jam to the burger which was a nice flair of flavor. My husband's burger was the perfect mix of cheese and mushrooms and flavor. Nothing special about the Tots or fries except a generous amount of both and their presentation in a mini fry basket. We waited about 10-15 minutes for our food but between water and drinks served it was a quick wait, especially for a Saturday night. This is a pleasant restaurant whether eating in a quiet booth or for watching bets while eating. Lots of options for couples or larger groups. There isn't much parking close to the restaurant but we found spaces at the hotel right next to it. Worth the drive. Craving satisfied. read more

Walked over for dinner a couple nights while staying at a hotel nearby. The first night, I ordered the mushroom and Swiss burger with an added tomato and tots. The tots were crispy and the burger was one of the best that I've had in a long time. Super juicy patties and tons of perfectly seasoned and caramelized mushrooms were the star of the show. We arrived early on a Saturday morning to try the food here at Burgershed. By noon the place was packed and there was a long line for tables. Service was great, the place is large and seating was comfortable but the food was a little disappointing. We ordered three different burgers (diablo, mushroom, all burger) and all of us agreed that the burger patty lacked any seasoning...there was not even a taste of salt or pepper. We upgraded our side to onion rings. They tasted bland and also lacked salt or seasoning. I'm not sure we'll be back anytime soon. read more

We make way too many treks across Iowa. Stopping in DM for a sit down meal is pretty rare. We were looking for burgers and decided to stop at Burger Shed based on other reviews. So glad that we did! The absolute best part of the visit was the staff. Our host was very friendly and made great conversation that led to the best recommendations for food choices. Abby was our server and was wonderful and full of smiles. The atmosphere was unique. Sports bar feel but not loud. Beautiful water view with geese to watch. They did have a good sized patio but it was a little chilly to sit out there tonight. We started with the cheese curds warm up. They were large and very lightly breaded. The cheese pull was perfect. Definitely get the ranch. We shared the mushroom and Swiss burger so we'd still have room for ice cream. The burger was cooked and seasoned well. It wasn't anything stellar though. We agreed that we'd try something else next time. There were 8 shake flavor choices. We had brownie. It was good but it was blended very finely and not chunks. In hindsight, we would have gone with the Crunch Berry shake. But we will for sure be back to try it! read more

Went to Burger Shed in Altoona as it's been quite some time. Hit the dinner hour, but beat the rush just in time, so we didn't have to wait long for service or our food. Love the ambiance and the views. Food: Started with the beer cheese and pretzels. We've been trying beer cheese many places and this place hits pretty good. It's made with an ale and you can taste it, but it's not too strong to turn you away. It was very good. We next got the black and blue burger with fries. Fries were crispy. I'm not a fry girl, but I did dip a few in the beer cheese. Excellent choice. As for the burger, the burger was juicy but overall I give it a 2.5/5 and that's just for the juiciness. Was not a fan of the thick dry (fall apart) bun. I'm pretty sure they make their dressings in-house, which is awesome, but if so, then their blue cheese had 0 blue cheese flavor. And we are about a year into liking blue cheese, so we aren't connoisseurs to it yet. So basically we got a burger with bacon. I do not recommend this burger for the blue cheese. Not pictured is the salad with creamy Parmesan dressing, which tasted homemade and was very good. Service was good. read more

Burger Shed is NO BS and that's a fact. Hot, fresh, delicious, excellent. Had the No BS Burger, the Mac Attack cheese Burger, kids chicken tenders, kids hamburger. Everything was delicious! Piping hot with every bite. Pepsi products served here. Dairy allergy was mentioned to our server Peggy and she really took care of us. She was understanding and was accommodating. Total was $49.xx before gratuity. Veterans discount was not honored here. The restaurant was beautiful with a brewery feel with woods, dark metals. I travel a lot for work, specifically around the Midwest. I get the opportunity to come down for World Pork Expo once a year, and I specifically pick the Hyatt Place in Altoona to be within walking distance of this establishment. Hands down my FAVORITE restaurant. The burger selection is unique and fun as well as delicious. The beer is ICE COLD (bonus points for having the 25 oz) The food is spectacular, fries have to be the hypothetical cherry on top for how well cooked they are and satisfying. Always a very open and inviting dining area, and the service is absolute top notch. I am not sure what their hiring process is like, but they always have the friendliest staff on hand. It was a busy Saturday night and we entered at 5:45pm and needed a table for 5. We were told if we could be in and out by 7pm that they could seat us at a table that was reserved for 7pm. We said we'd be quick and were seated immediately. Ordered waters and three of us had a cocktail - I totally forgot to take photos - but two of us had the peach bourbon drink and another just got an Angry Orchard hard cider. Drinks were fine - nothing to rave about, but fine. I wish all restaurants would provide coasters when serving glasses that sweat on a hard surface. Just a pet peeve of mine when the glass is wet, sliding around and making the whole table wet. We started with an order of Philly cheesesteak egg rolls and onion strings - both were very good. Ordered a tenderloin, that was cut to under bun size. Asked server where the rest of my tenderloin was and her replay was, "well the cook thought it was too big." My reply was, " well hope he is enjoying the other half of my sandwich." People at our table ran out of water twice, we asked the bar keep for water and she did bring a pitcher to refill our glasses. I guess, my biggest issue is if I want a big tenderloin for dinner, I should get what I ordered, not one that is smaller than the bun!! If this is the new policy, then put it on the menu. Been wanting to try this for awhile. Stopped in mid week and was greeted warmly. The place was busseling. It's a sports bar/ restaurant style. Lots of tvs to watch sports on. Good selection of beer. Our server was great. We told him it was our first visit and had lots of great suggestions. I tried the GRILLED CHICKEN AVOCADO. Grilled chicken topped with provolone cheese, fresh avocado, spring greens, tomato and chipotle aioli - served on a ciabatta roll. I really enjoyed the Chipotle aioli it made everything pop. We had a couple beers, one by happy accident but all still good. The location is a bit out of our way but we would b probably be back to try more of the burgers. Two things I like about eating at a place for the first time: 1) Picking something off their online menu in advance that is maybe a bit "over the top" or otherwise sets it aside from similar items that I can pick at other restaurants in the area. 2) Be satisfied to the point that I'd be willing to come back to the same restaurant the next day and order the same item. Dined at Burger Shed in Altoona this past Saturday, got there about 11:30am and was really surprised they were not more busy as an Iowa FB game was on all the TV's. Here's the nice thing, this place has 2 floors so the ceilings are high and it wasn't as noisy as I thought it would be, NICE! We were seated on the 2nd floor, and our waiter Tommy was at our table within a minute. He was a pretty cool guy, answered a couple questions we had, took good care of us. As for the burgers we chose. My wife got the Shed Burger, which had beef brisket, pepper jack cheese, BBQ sauce and fried onion strings. It had lettuce, tomato and onion on the side. I chose the Farmhouse Burger, which had a fried egg, hash browns, bacon jam and American cheese. Folks, these were 2 of THE BEST signature burgers burgers we've had, and we travel lots. First time here, had the Shed Burger/tots; wife had the tenderloin/mac & cheese. Didn't like the selection of burgers, just wanted a bacon cheeseburger. I was looking forward to this place as I like a good burger, and expect it so at these prices. The burger & brisket were dry and somewhat tasteless, the onion strings had an off taste, burger was not juicy, bbq sauce was ok. The tots were ok at best, had better. The prices were a little high for what you received. I'll probably skip out the next time someone suggests or asks to dine here. It was okay, but didn't blow me out of the water.
