We make way too many treks across Iowa. Stopping in DM for a sit down meal is pretty rare. We were looking for burgers and decided to stop at Burger Shed based on other reviews. So glad that we did! The absolute best part of the visit was the staff. Our host was very friendly and made great conversation that led to the best recommendations for food choices. Abby was our server and was wonderful and full of smiles. The atmosphere was unique. Sports bar feel but not loud. Beautiful water view with geese to watch. They did have a good sized patio but it was a little chilly to sit out there tonight. We started with the cheese curds warm up. They were large and very lightly breaded. The cheese pull was perfect. Definitely get the ranch. We shared the mushroom and Swiss burger so we'd still have room for ice cream. The burger was cooked and seasoned well. It wasn't anything stellar though. We agreed that we'd try something else next time. There were 8 shake flavor choices. We had brownie. It was good but it was blended very finely and not chunks. In hindsight, we would have gone with the Crunch Berry shake. But we will for sure be back to try it!

First time visiting Birger Shed! Our server Roy was really wonderful, and I just have to give him a shout out since it was his 6th day of work when we visited and he did a great job! Our food was wonderful, highly recommend the cheese curds and shoe string onion rings! Generous portions and a great spot! We will definitely be back again!

Taylor was amazing! Super friendly and very prompt with food and drinks. The turkey Rueben is the favorite for it's deliciousness!! Yum Had to have a Oreo shake. The tater tots and fries are crisp and tasty. Can't go wrong with the many flavors of burgers also.

Went to Burger Shed in Altoona as it's been quite some time. Hit the dinner hour, but beat the rush just in time, so we didn't have to wait long for service or our food. Love the ambiance and the views. Food: Started with the beer cheese and pretzels. We've been trying beer cheese many places and this place hits pretty good. It's made with an ale and you can taste it, but it's not too strong to turn you away. It was very good. We next got the black and blue burger with fries. Fries were crispy. I'm not a fry girl, but I did dip a few in the beer cheese. Excellent choice. As for the burger, the burger was juicy but overall I give it a 2.5/5 and that's just for the juiciness. Was not a fan of the thick dry (fall apart) bun. I'm pretty sure they make their dressings in-house, which is awesome, but if so, then their blue cheese had 0 blue cheese flavor. And we are about a year into liking blue cheese, so we aren't connoisseurs to it yet. So basically we got a burger with bacon. I do not recommend this burger for the blue cheese. Not pictured is the salad with creamy Parmesan dressing, which tasted homemade and was very good. Service was good.

We were seated immediately. The area we were in you could not see the tv's and it was loud. Our waiter was okay. He seemed very new. Our food was okay. For the price of the burger it was very underwhelming. The mushroom and Swiss was missing something and the tots were overcooked. My husbands was supposed to be spicy but wasn't, he did enjoy the choice of cottage cheese though. The plate that they serve it on made the portions seem small.

Saturday night, 6pm party of 3. I had the Shed Burger for the first time, don't sleep on this burger! It's amazing, might even be my new favorite. The highlight of the dining area is the ginormous tv mounted to watch the game. High tops and booths, beautifully decorated like Iowa. Tin partitions, posters, kegs, wood top tables, metal baskets for fries or tots.

Burger Shed is NO BS and that's a fact. Hot, fresh, delicious, excellent. Had the No BS Burger, the Mac Attack cheese Burger, kids chicken tenders, kids hamburger. Everything was delicious! Piping hot with every bite. Pepsi products served here. Dairy allergy was mentioned to our server Peggy and she really took care of us. She was understanding and was accommodating. Total was $49.xx before gratuity. Veterans discount was not honored here. The restaurant was beautiful with a brewery feel with woods, dark metals. Beautiful outdoor patio but it was too gloomy to eat outside today. I highly recommend Burger Shed and would come back!

However, my $56 dry-aged 12-oz ribeye was a disappointment. I expected a melt-in-your-mouth experience. What I got was a somewhat dry piece of meat with very little marbling, but with a chunk of fat in the middle. Both steaks were poorly seasoned. Steaks should be prepared with a ample amount of salt and pepper. Adding it after the fact isn't the same.

The vibe is exactly what you want from a casual BBQ joint laid back, a little loud, TVs on, and that classic neighborhood bar feel. Super easy, no pressure, just good food and a place to hang out. We ordered a mix of things to try and everything came out hot and packed with flavor. The wings were crispy and saucy (definitely a highlight), and the waffle fries were seasoned perfectly and so good dipped in their ranch. The BBQ plate was super solid too tender, smoky meat with classic sides like green beans, mac and cheese, and cornbread that felt comforting and homemade. Also have to mention the chips and queso moment, simple but hit the spot. Service was friendly and quick, which made it even better after a long day of traveling and being outside. Overall, if you're staying at Adventureland or passing through, this is such an easy, satisfying stop. Nothing fancy, just good, hearty BBQ and a fun atmosphere. Would definitely come back.

At around 1 hour, I got a text telling me to gather my party because we were on-deck. Several other groups were seated, some of them quite large. Almost 10 minutes later, I received another text advising me to gather my party because we were on-deck. I went to the desk to ask if our name had been called. I was told that no, we were on deck. Again, several other groups were seated, and several of them were large groups. About 10 minutes later, they called our name. We were taken to a table next to the main walkway through the restaurant, and as we were seated, the music was cranked up and the wait staff started dancing next to our table. I couldn't hear what was going on over the loud music, but I gathered that someone else was there for a birthday. About 10 minutes later a waitress arrived and took our drink order. She said she would get us "some more" dinner rolls. We didn't have any at our table prior to that. Several minutes later, she came back with our drinks but no rolls. My wife reminded her about the rolls, and she went and got 2 baskets of rolls and then took our food orders. While we waited for our food to arrive, a song that mentions Texas Roadhouse in the lyrics started playing. Whoever controls the volume turned it up so loud that we had to stop our conversation. Then the dancing started again. I don't remember the song they were dancing to except the word "butt-crack" was clearly audible. When the music quieted down, our birthday person mentioned that if they didn't have to stop and dance so often, maybe they could get our food out faster. The wait for our food was about half an hour. I didn't get any photos because we were all pretty hungry at that point. The flavor and quality of the food was quite good, but there were a couple of outliers. For example, our birthday person reported that the buttered corn didn't seem very buttery, and I noticed that the steamed broccoli I ordered wasn't warm enough to melt the butter I put on it. I would rate the food a 4, the service a 4, and the ambiance a 3. Actually, make the ambiance a 2. There were a couple of times we talked about not coming back due to how noisy it was all the time, but especially when they cranked up the music for that one song, and then the dancing. I thought we were going to make it out without more dancing, but that didn't happen. One of the dancers came uncomfortably close to bumping in to me while I was trying to finish eating. My overall score would be a 3.5 if that were an option. A 3 seems too low, but a 4 seems too high. PS: For those of you trying to avoid seed oils, Texas Roadhouse uses soybean oil to cook just about everything. I always ask for my steak to be cooked without oil and only butter. Apparently, the mushrooms and onions they offer with the steaks are already prepared with the oil because since I started ordering that way, I haven't been offered the mushrooms and onions on my steak even though it has been offered to others I'm with who don't specify no oil.

We had the opportunity when friends were in town and an 80's group was playing in the Casino, so we decided to start the evening with dinner at AJ's Steakhouse then attend the concert. While we had to walk around an escalator that was out of service, the entrance area of AJ's and the initial impression was quite positive (see pictures). The place was clean, modern and lively - giving off a classy aura. Once we were seated at our table, we were a little disappointed with the wobbly table and the delay in receiving our drinks - but the drinks were solid. My wife had the Grande Margarita (see picture) and I went with the Smoked Old Fashion (see picture) - both of which were very good and the prices were reasonable. The food and service though is where AJ's fell well short of my expectations for a place like this with so much promise. After waiting some time for our meals, our server stopped out to tell us that our meals would be delayed due to a large group ahead of us. This seemed a bit surprising, as we didn't see any large groups in the restaurant, but what could we do? At one point after waiting over 30 minutes, I suggested to our server that "the manager will probably comp us a drink or dessert given the wait"...which received nothing more than a dismissive "maybe" and didn't seem to be taken seriously. Once our food was finally delivered, we were again left disappointed. My wife ordered the Top Sirloin (see picture) and I ordered the Salmon (see picture). While she ordered medium rare, the initial cut into the Top Sirloin was medium well and dry. A manager did come around to ask how things were, so we were open about it being overdone (other cuts later were closer to rare, so it was very inconsistent relative to other steaks at other steakhouses). She offered to exchange it, but given how long we had waited for our meal and the concert starting soon, we declined the offer. Again, given this situation and the fact that it was shared with the manager, we assumed a minimum of a complimentary dessert or a coupon to return another day...but received nothing. As for the Salmon (see picture) it was cooked well - very soft and juicy...but almost zero flavor. A convenient stop at the casino with a classy first impression, but the food and service leave me unable to recommend AJ's Steakhouse.
