I read a lot of mixed reviews and we still went to check it out. THE FOOD IS GOOD! The menudo was awesome. Best menudo I've tired in Omaha. The pieces were a little bigger than I'd like but the soup had a great flavor and it was served hott. We took my super critical Mexican mother even she liked the menudo. Fresh hand made tortillas come with the big bowl of menudo. We also ordered tacos and the birria quesadillas, which were also bomb.com Prices are okay. Tacos are $2.50 but they're big and come with those fresh handmade tortillas. The menudo is $14.50 it's a little pricey but, 1. It's good 2. The place was super busy. Which is great for the restaurant. We ordered our food it was out within 5 minutes. It was freshy made. I ordered tacos and Chile Riano . There was a long wait, but that was a good sign. There is nothing fancy about this place at all. However, the waitresses and waiters were working hard to get people seated. The food was so flavorful and delicious. It is a cash only restaurant. Parking can be a challenge if it is busy. We will be back soon to try other dishes. Birrieria El Chalan has become my go-to sit down Mexican restaurant in South O. Homey, comfortable, with the same 2 ladies working the front serving and running the show. The food here is simple and delicious. The normal South O menu exists here- toras, street tacos, burritos etc, but they also have super delicious meat/soup/stews like the pork rib stew and the beef chunk stew, which is served with a platter of rice and beans and some warm tortilla to make your own tacos with it. Perfect for a cool fall day or a rainy day blues. The fresh guac here is outstanding and very inexpensive for the qaulity. I also love the texture of the house chips and all the varieties of salsa. CASH ONLY but 100% worth your time and the inconvenience. read more

So this is definitely a Mexican diner like vibe. It's super weird to be dining out in Covid times, especially in a place that was packed. We got: 1. Chilaquilles - delicious 2. Crunchy birria tacos with consommé - amazing 3. Beans and rice - best I've had 4. Carne Asada tacos - just okay. I like taqueria Tijuana's better. My daughter did have a metal piece hers. So that was off putting Disappointed that the restaurant didn't require people to wear masks while waiting for takeout. It made me feel slightly stressed during meal. A more traditional Mexican restaurant known for goat stew but they also have the classic taco's, tostada's and sopes. I had 2 tacos, 1 tostada, and 1 sopa and was stuffed. You also get complimentary chips and salsa which was nice. They key - get the horchata. I don't have it often, but it is so delicious. read more

I believe I got the #1. This is definitely the best birria in town! The tortillas are homemade, they give you a side of lime cilantro and onion to add to your liking! Agua de horchata is perfect as well! I cannot remember the name of our server but she made us feel so welcomed and was just so nice to us. I will definitely be back! read more

I worked right across the street for an entire year before my students convinced me to try out this little place. It's nothing special on the inside (and easy to miss on the outside!), but the food and sweet people who work there make it worthwhile. While the staff doesn't speak much English (lots of pointing going on when I'm there), they are very patient! The tacos and tortas (like a big taco sandwich) with asada are my favorites, washed down with a big glass of horchata. Lately El Chalan has upped their game by adding roasted peppers, onions, and radishes on the side. They are also one of the seemingly rare places around town that offer complimentary chips and salsa. I took 40 teens here on a field trip and they were extremely helpful and understanding, which is the biggest compliment I can give! read more

Chips (not like your average TexMex tortilla chip!) and salsa (slightly sweet) come free when you dine-in and there are at six sauces you can add to your food. Portions are generous and the food is excellent. Be advised, knowing some Spanish will make things easier as some of the menu isn't fully translated. Crowded at noon on a Sunday. VEGAN Burrito option in South O!!! I was so excited that Birrieria El Chalan can make a vegan burrito upon request!!! I typed out that I wanted a bean burrito with all of the plants that they have (lettuce, onion, tomato), NO cheese, NO sour cream. Then I had google translate put it into Spanish and hit print. I brought this with me to the restaurant and while I had asked on the phone, they brought me the tortilla packaging and I was able to confirm the tortilla was vegan. So they made me a vegan burrito, and were happy to do so!!! One of the waitresses who was consulted during the ordering asked if I was vegetarian. So that concept existed but not "vegan", but having it written down in Spanish "no cheese, no sour cream" made it really easy on everyone. I did note the prices have gone up slightly since the menu photographed and posted here on Yelp. Nice seating area, chips served when you eat in. Not bad, not great. I've had much better Mexican food elsewhere. The place could certainly be considered a "hole-in-the-wall". Service was fine (and fast) but she didn't speak English. Food and service is excellent. Cashiers on the other hand are a a pain in the a$$. They asume people are local and they should know better when paying. I wasn't aware that they didn't accept credit card and I was treated as if I was stealing for having offered my card. When I asked the moron that had just cashed me out to break a bill to leave a proper tip she refused and said that she had no change yet all they handle is cash. Pathetic attitude. I absolutely love this place! The food tastes like its homemade and the staff are very nice. I try not to go so often because I would be really fat! I absolutely recommend it.
