Disappointed in both only because they used chopped up white onions as part of the spices. I'm just used to green onions, also we ordered pan fried noodles and they didn't separate the sauce so it was soggy by the tine we got home. this place has been around since I was in high school. I'm 28 now, so this place has been around for a minute. I'm not usually a fan of Chinese food because my family ate it for every event growing up, but decided to come here because I was craving orange chicken but didn't want to go to Panda Express or the other Chinese establishments down the street. I got the orange chicken lunch special which came with either the egg drop or sweet and sour soup. I got the latter, and the S&S soup had enough spice and tang to make you want more. the plate comes with fried or steamed rice, an egg roll, 2 crab rangoons, and your choice of entree. service was quick and the food was piping hot, including the soup. I ordered "kung pao chicken, extra spicy," takeout from a friendly employee without issue and waited in the large clean dining room. As it was August, I appreciated the large glass of ice water brought over to me. Back at my hotel I opened the bag and was relieved to find chopsticks and napkins. All too often from takeouts, utensils/napkins are missing - ultra-annoying. The kung pao portion was enormous! And there was plenty of separately boxed white rice. I dug in and was immediately disappointed that there was no heat. In fact, there were no dried red peppers. Instead, there were sliced into discs, green peppers of some sort, possibly poblanos. Instead of heat, they produced an unusual, though still edible, taste. If I'm ever back in the area, I'll order a different dish. True, this is a Mandarin & Cantonese restaurant, not Szechuan. We've been dining at Bistro City for years before most people even knew it was there. While people are obsessed with other Chinese restaurants in the area, we knew we found one of the best Chinese places in town. Obviously the highlight of most people's Chinese food experience is the Salt and Pepper chicken wings and hands down, this place has the BEST wings! They don't drown the wings in MSG, like other restaurants, and they include jalapeños to add a nice heat to the wings that just hit the spot. Oh and they include a free small box of white rice with each entree so you can't go wrong. Other dishes here are just as amazingly delicious as well. The curry, the string bean chicken, the egg drop soup, omg, you have to try them all! I only removed one star because their prices have been climbing so much. Understandably, it's probably because of the economy, but the prices feel a little too much fine dining for a casual dining experience. So instead of this place being a weekly place for us to dine, it became a "special occasion" place for us now. This place is a hidden gem for Chinese food! The food is always fast and freshly made. Everything is super flavorful, and very consistent. Whenever I'm craving Chinese food this is THE place I go to. They have a expansive menu, and prices are good for the portions you get! The inside is always clean and well kept. The service here is excellent, as everyone is really nice and attentive! I think I found my new Chinese takeout spot! I tried the combination lo mein, orange chicken, and wonton soup. The entree portions were huge and left more than a days' worth of leftovers! Orange chicken had some kick, noodles were soft, and the wontons in the soup were generous (3 or 4 in a "cup" order). Great value for the portions and quality. Singapore Stir Fried Thin Rice Noodles, Dry Beef Chow Fun, Triple Mushrooms with Egg Bean Curd, Salted Fish Fried Rice, Crab Rangoon and Salt and Pepper Chicken Wings The Singapore noodles were delicious and such good flavor, and the chicken in it was delicious! The dry beef chow fun was so good also honestly if you have a noddle craving this will settle it. The triple mushroom with egg bean curd was light and delicate but crispy at the same time.. the salted Fish Fried rice was so good also, don't get it if you don't like salty things. even though it was salty it was in a well balanced way. This is my new go to spot for Chinese food in San Diego. It has a good size dining area that is usually pretty mellow. Not a lot of people stay for dine in. I do notice families like to come here and splurge. The portions are huge and perfect for sharing so it makes sense. I like the simple aesthetics of the place and the old school paper place mats with the Chinese zodiac signs. Now for the food. I love the food here. I've had the typical fried rice, orange chicken and bbq pork which is all amazing. The salted pepper chicken wings were good, but not at all good enough to outweigh the terrible experience I had here. It was super busy at all other surrounding Chinese restaurants in the area (Royal Mandarin, Golden Chopsticks, etc.) and this restaurant was the only one who answered my call right away and I had high hopes that I would get my order in a timely manner. I called the restaurant at exactly 2:10 PM to place 2 individual orders (not party trays) of chicken wings. The lady answered and gave me a wait time of 15-20 minutes which was totally fine. I arrive about 20 minutes later ready to pay for my called in order. I stand there for another 20+ minutes and I can't believe it took that long to even acknowledge me waiting. And to top it off, I don't even think she placed my order or wrote it down at all when I called it in at 2:10PM. I was a little annoyed at this point, but I brushed it off after I paid and assumed I would wait maybe another 15 minutes or so for my order to come out, at least I was hoping that. A woman that ordered after me got her food before me and she also ordered 2 entrees. There was one larger party dining in, but three staff members were exclusively focused on that table, completely ignoring everyone else waiting to order or pick up food. No eye contact, no updates, nothing. They wouldn't even make eye contact with the other customers and were solely focused on this party. How did they think it was okay to straight up ignore everyone else? Despite the restaurant being far less busy than neighboring spots and barely taking phone orders, I was left standing without any communication. After 45 minutes, I still had no food and no explanation as these workers are walking right past me. Another customer waiting behind me, who had not been waiting nearly as long, noticed my frustration. She confronted the staff on my behalf and informed them I had been waiting over 45 minutes. All of a sudden, only then was my order is brought out from the kitchen after they were confronted by her. I was shocked how it took another customer (who I was grateful for) getting upset at them to bring out MY order. To make matters worse, the woman who brought my food out attempted to charge me again, despite the fact that I had already paid, which was something multiple customers witnessed and had to point out. I finally received my order after 3:15 PM, over an hour after I initially called it in. That is absolutely unacceptable and I wanted a refund and was debating on just leaving, but I am not the confrontational type. That said, there is absolutely no excuse for deliberately ignoring customers for extended periods of time, failing to communicate, and only responding once another customer becomes upset and has to raise her voice for staff to finally acknowledge this. This was the most disorganized I think I have seen a restaurant and they didn't seem to care at all. The way I was blatantly ignored for an hour after I was being patient and polite was a shame, and it took someone yelling at them to give me my order. Please work on bettering your customer service. I wrote this review hours later and I cannot stop thinking about how shockingly bad it was. read more

I haven't been onsite to the restaurant but have been getting takeout for years, only really ever order the tray of pepper wings for hosting at my home. These wings are the best thing in the world! Hands down one of the best Chinese food you can get here in National City. It has taken me a while to write a review, but I have been here twice and each time, the flavor is absolutely amazing. The Chinese broccoli is cooked to perfection and not overcooked. Look how vibrant the green is! The oyster sauce tastes incredible and you could honestly just have this dish and be completely satisfied. The honey walnut shrimp is just as fantastic. It's succulent, tender, while maintaining a a bit of a crunch from the walnuts and batter. I missed getting chow fun from Sacramento and couldn't find anything remotely close until Bistro City popped up. Once again, another fantastic dish. The noodles were perfectly cooked and the flavors meshed well with the shrimp, pork, and chicken. The lady at the cash register is always so sweet and nice. I think that might be the owner? Did ya know that green beans have a lot of fiber vitamin A B and iron? That's why it's good for you. Loved how they sautéed it. The Bok choy garlic sauce dish was flavorful deliciously cooked to perfection. I loved it how they stir fry it. I think it was super healthy with the garlic. Sometimes the simplest things are the best things. Must order the Bokchoy dish. The Bok choy is a type of chinese cabbage and it's also high in nutrients low carbs. Excellent healthy option here. Chinese food aren't too bad if you if you order wisely. You can ask them not to put too much sodium. And or you eat half of it and bring the rest to go and eat later lol. A solid Chinese spot if you're craving some! They weren't the best Chinese food I've had, but I found their food pretty authentic and decently tasty. I will say you get HUGE portions which I can appreciate (this food fed 2 of us for a number of meals!) and came with rice. I'd suggest maybe calling in and order rather than going through the app. There seemed to be a bit of a mix up when we did it via Yelp and they ended up calling me anyways to ensure I was on the way, so I would recommend ordering over the phone!
