This charming restaurant is surrounded by rolling hills of grapevines and scenery straight from a fairy tale. The food and service are five star and one of the most memorable fine dining experiences we have enjoyed. The three course dinner menu is plenty of food so I don't recommend any add on options. I had the home made linguini and pesto with clams which was bright and sunny and delicious. Beau had the quail which was cooked to perfection. I followed with duck that was on a bed of red cabbage with peas. Oooo la la. Somehow the marriage of those ingredients were a match made in heaven. Lastly, beau had a lamb shank in a light but complex sauce which made his eyes roll. It was served with silken whipped potatoes that I just had to participate in. We managed to squeeze in our desserts. The most memorable was a panna cotta with fresh fruit. I've never seen blackberries that huge and they were so sweet. We will be on the hunt for blackberries at a farmers market today. We made a reservation months in advance. Certainly a highlight of out Australian holiday. read more

Stopped by here for lunch after visiting a few wineries - opted to eat light with a vegetarian entree - if you want vegan you would need to call in advance. In my case, my dish did use some butter - otherwise very well done. My friends ordered the bugs which were very well done with a grilled flavor. While you can order other wines - decided to sample a Pinot Gris from the connected winery Carillion wines - on the whole I consider this an excellent place for both food and view. Absolutely superb! Squeaked in at the last minute whilst on a drive from Melbourne to Brisbane and this was the highlight of the trip for my wife and I. Superb atmosphere, sublime food, stunning surroundings and capped off with service which was both attentive and unobtrusive when desired. It was #2 on Time Out's list of Top 5 Places to Eat In Hunter Valley - so it was obviously on our to-do list for our HV weekend. It lived up to all of our expectations with an even better view than was imagined. We drove over to Bistro Molines for lunch on Saturday. It's located on the grounds of the Tallavera Grove (brought to you by the owner of Pepper Tree and Briar Ridge wines). It was a lovely and sunny day - the perfect weather to enjoy this amazing view. Though the service was a bit slow, I won't complain too much as the view was to die for and the food was AMAZING. We started off with a bottle of Tyrell's Semillon (one of the white wine varieties the Hunter Valley is known for). Our server also brought over some ridiculously tasty fried Gruyer cheese puffs courtesy of the kitchen. My mouth is watering just thinking of them. We shared two additional entrees - Baked Figs wrapped in Prosciutto with Gorgonzola ($25) and Roasted Quail served over Polenta ($27). For our mains - we had a 2009 Pepper Tree Merlot to go with all of the meat dishes we ordered. I had the Veal ($40) served with Jerusalem Artichokes and Champignon Sauce. McKay and Sarah both had the Fillet Mignon ($40) served with Brussel Sprouts, Potatoes, Speck , Carmalized Onions and a delish Red Wine Bearnaise. Ryan had the Duckling ($41) - perfectly roasted with an awesome glaze sauce. Obviously - we had to get dessert as well. We shared the Vanilla Beam Creme Brulee ($15) - highly recommend! As well as the Easter special - Easter Bunny Mille Feuille (puff pastry) with Chocolate cream in the center ($15). All in all - a pretty amazing dining experience. The service was not phenomenal and my one complaint would be the blaring sun sort of toasting us and our meals (we got there early so we swiped the one umbrella they had, but the family next to us was roasting). Roasting or not - it was so worth it for the amazing food and view. Bistro Molines is a must visit for your trip to Hunter Valley. read more

I was taken here for a birthday surprise for lunch and was amazed by everything!!! Food, decor, views are all 5 star!!! I was wowed as soon as I stepped onto the path leading to the restaurant from the carpark. There were endless views of the hills, valleys and vineyards and best of all, half the restaurant was outside and my dining partner had reserved the table right at the edge, closest to the valleys! Very peaceful and chilled out lunch. The presentation of the food is what you would get at a fine dining restaurant, tasted fresh and everything was cooked to perfection. Both the savoury food and dessert were excellent (I find that restaurants usually either only do savoury or sweet well). The only complaint I would have would be about the service - they forgot the bread and olives and we chased them up twice, but having said that the restaurant was full that day. read more

I found the views and the decor absolutely astounding. It is a very beautiful estate and I definitely appreciated the atmosphere, however the food was very disappointing - Perhaps it was simply not to my taste. We ordered the chicken and pan seared fish dish which were both dry, the flavors seemed a bit forced and over seasoned. I also felt the staff were a bit stand offish. I have had my share of French meals in Sydney, and France itself - This place just didn't impress me like the others did. read more

I can't quite bring myself to give this 5 stars. Yes, the food is magnificent and the view is picture perfect, exactly what you expect from one of the best restaurants in the Hunter. But I just can't get over the slow service and my reasonable suspicion that our waiter was hungover. If you do choose to eat here, and I hope you do, know thats its the kind of place you wear white to, where you invite old friends, and if you come here often enough, you are going to get to know the owner. I saw her greet so many patrons as they entered the beautiful wisteria canopied outdoor seating of the restaurant; makes me want to keep coming just to get to know her. If you can go on their daily wine tour at 10:30 before eating at the restaurant. Its wonderful to walk through the vineyard and then sit down to taste the wine with the food. Offering up game, cheese and wines to match. It's only a couple of hours from good old Sydney town. If you need to impress the in-laws, your Nan is having a birthday or you just have champagne tastes, then I highly recommend this place. I had the Pork, however friends had Rabbit, Venison and Duck. I've often been let down at French themed restaurants with not enough of the reason you went there. for something French tasting and different. Molines did not let me down. We were recommended this place by a friend...was told that the food is superb and the service was impeccable... This was not our experience...we felt the food was overrated and the service was mostly good, but one server ruined it at the end. We order the lamb brains and the prosciutto wrapped figs for entrees...both were a decent start. We then had the pork neck and the venison as mains...both were overcooked, though the medley of vegetables they came with were delightful (disappointing when the sides were better than the main part of the dish) We then had the sticky date pudding and the panna cotta...I enjoyed the panna cotta (I asked for vanilla ice cream instead of the banana ice cream) it was great with the crumbled honeycomb... The sticky date pudding is what ruined our experience.... It wasn't the dessert itself that ruined it, it was the server and her attitude. Being a foodie, I had scrutinized every part of that menu way before I even reserved my table. All the dishes on the menu had the descriptions and thus we knew what we were ordering. My husband ordered the sticky date pudding, when it arrived we noticed that it was covered in crushed nuts as a garnish. As there were no nuts listed on the menu to describe the dish, we asked the server if they were crushed peanuts, as my husband is allergic...she said she didn't know, but would take it back to the kitchen. She returned 15 mins later with a new dish without any nuts. Great! HOWEVER, before she put down the dish, she felt it was necessary to berate us and lecture us on how "normally, people with food allergies let them know"....well lady with short brown hair, NORMALLY restaurants with written descriptions of their food would include things which people are commonly allergic to! The other servers were fine, but that one server and her rude attitude ruined the experience for us. Having been a server myself for over 10 years and growing up in the restaurant business, I understand what it's like to do the job....I have high expectations but I'm also understanding. It wasn't a big deal that the dish came with nuts, we appreciated that they fixed it...but that one server and her air of pompousness made any food that may have been great taste sour. Had a nice Sunday lunch at bistro Molines for my friends birthday weekend in the hunter. The staff were great, helpful and at-tentative. The location of the restaurant is breath taking, with an amazing view on a slight hill. When you walk into the restaurant you almost feel special for being able to dine there. The presentation is exquisite. Lovely white table clothes and you can tell there was a lot of time spent on attention to detail. We had a beautiful round table for the 6 of us right at the Windows edge with beautiful French styled window / doors that were open so we were exposed to a beautiful slight cold breeze as well as the sun. Everything that you want in winter! The food took some time however that was expected as you know that aren't heating it up in a microwave and that they are actually cooking it. The preservation of the food was really lovely, it was quite pricy so it does raise your expectation. The food was nice but not amazing. My poached chicken dish was dry. This may be my favourite restaurant in the world. The drive up through the vineyards on the gravel road perfectly prepare your senses upon arrival. This is a lunch restaurant where from the moment you enter through the courtyard doorway you are mentally swept into a french countryside. The casual cobblestones under wisteria, diners with a dog under their table the coming and going of attentive wait-staff and the gentle clink of champagne flutes greet us as we breathe a lungful of country air. Rolling hills of grapevines through the valley and little wrens chirping at the guests as we are gently ushered to a table by the open window. Olives breadsticks and complimentary bubble arrive immediately so we can peruse a beautiful menu at our own pace. Figs wrapped in prosciutto drizzled in blue cheese and a leek and cherry tomato tart followed by twice-cooked duck and spatchcock baked in fresh herbs, garlic and a side of julienne vegetables and some naughty pomfrit's. A seasonal soufflé and a sticky date pudding with a glass of local sweet wine challenged our best defences. The selection of local and international wines complemented our meals perfectly. Food is highly subjective and one can always hunt down a better meal but for me the entire experience from this authentic one hat french restaurant where one can order a range of traditional french food strikes an incomparable balance of gastronomic and dining experience. Stunning location and views. Service left a little to be desired, however exceptional food and wine. Well worth the wait.
