Everyone was so inviting and the creative art on the walls took my breath away. It's frustratingly expensive here for what it is, but we can't deny enjoying our tasty dinners and the cool atmosphere. The biggest flaw for me is that their menu pricing online was different than the menu pricing when we got to the restraint. My dish, the California bowl was marked up by $2. That's just not ok- its like false advertising. Another annoyance was that they ran out of tamales when we ordered them (it happens, I get it, but it was a Saturday and you'd think they'd be prepared for the crowd). My bowl was tasty, but too salty and not spectacular. It was $20 for a bowl consisting mainly of rice and beans- absurd. My partner's tacos were delicious, but again, pricey. What are we paying extra for? The mediocre service? Our waitress was fine, but nothing to write home about. Not super professional. The best part was dessert- the churros. Ugh, they were delicious and I want to go back for them, but I can't justify it. We also liked the fun interior design, but again, not worth a $20 bowl of rice and beans. Proceed with caution... We found a spot at the bar and decided to just hang there- our party was just 3 so it worked. Love their drinks- but had a Paloma, my dates had margaritas and Young Lion Mexican lager. I've been anticipating a visit to Bitter honey. The photos and reviews had me craving this place. Right when you walk in, I fell in love with all the aesthetics. The vibe you get in here is a mixture of chill, upscale, and intimate with a dab of class. Totally in my alley. The service here was on point. The staff was super friendly, and made us feel comfortable during the whole experience. I always love it when the waiter/waitress knows the menu and describes the menu choices in a way that makes it easy for you to choose what you desire. Started with a Mezcal margarita with chili powdered rim. Delish! It was a great margarita with a slight smoky taste. The rim was not overpowering or spicy, but gave it a nice added flavor. Also ordered queso with chorizo and guacamole with chips. The queso was spot on for me. The texture was perfect. Not too thick nor runny. The chorizo was not oily at all which is nice, it makes you feel like you wont have a heart attack after enjoying it. As far as the guacamole. This thing was made to perfection. The texture was where it needed to be in a perfect world. It hit all the right spots. It was fresh, balanced with all the right seasoning, and accompanied by well made corn chips. They were not oily at all. Next comes the main course. I ordered 4 tacos. Carne Asada, Josh Allen (Recover in peace, I'm still hurting), Baja, and Camaron. As I was flying in paradise ,I was struck by lightning. I started with what I thought would be the beat drop in my favorite song- the carne asada. There was a short somewhere unfortunately. I was expecting robust flavors from the flank steak, but all I could taste was the corn tortilla. The portion of meat was great but I just didn't get that explosion of flavors I'm used to getting when I eat carne asada. Josh Allen was not far off from how I felt about the carne asada. The chicken trip was over cooked and on the dry side. The veggies inside were raw and unseasoned. A great idea would be to season the veggies if raw, or saute it. As far as the chicken, fry until more golden than brown. As far as the Baja taco. It was not bad. It's fascinating how the sauce by itself is a bit spicy, but when you take a bit of all the components together, it becomes beautifully balanced. The only down side of the Baja taco is that the beer batter lacked flavor and a crispy outer shell. Last but not least, the Camaron taco was the best out of the 4 tacos. Full of flavor, perfect amount of sauce. The shrimp was poppin both literally and figuratively. The corn tortilla was finally put in the background of my pallet. Now, I always choose to look at the positive side of things, but this one thing really sticks out like a sore thumb. The rice and beans that came on the side with the order of three tacos was sadly impassive. Coming from a hispanic heritage, rice is a component we use very often and has to be done properly. I was shocked to have been served parboiled rice which lacked seasoning. Parboiled rice is a big no no for me, and I never recall eating parboiled rice at any Mexican restaurant. The beans were not the best either. On the bright side of things. Overall, I had a great experience as far as the scenery goes and the drink and appetizer. First off, I love LOVE the vibes of this establishment, whether we inside or outside, the place is super cute, and exudes date night. Love the outdoor high top tables with lights. As far as COVID protocols, I felt safe, we ate outside, and our food was served to us with masked waiters and gloves on. MORE IMPORTANTLY as a CELIAC - I felt safe eating here. My first post-COVID patio experience was at Bitter Honey last week. Overall I felt safe and protected. They did a good job spacing out tables as well as providing digital menus and wearing masks while serving us. I've always liked the atmosphere and vibe of Bitter Honey. This still holds true. It's just a great place to relax with food and drink. However, the food is not amazing. For Rochester standards, I guess it's pretty good since there aren't as many Mexican options. So overall, Bitter Honey is a place where I would go back to meet up with some friends for drinks. It is not a restaurant I would go to just to eat Mexican food. The ambiance and atmosphere caters to anyone looking for a date-night spot or a Friday out with friends. The servers and bartenders are friendly and attentive. I finally tried more than just a drink at Bitter Honey and I'm glad I did. A group of coworkers and I came in for drinks and food at the bar before and after going to the Haunted Armory. The bartender David knows how to take care of people and learned names quickly to make the service more personalized. Two thumbs up for fantastic service all night. The margaritas are on point- especially the spicy margarita if you like those, yum. The Quesadillas are huge and delish. The tacos were okay. The shrimp taco is good, but, what I think was carnitas was too sweet for my taste. It came with thin Apple strips in it too- not my fave and meat was a little dry. Always solid margaritas and given that fact, I tend to sit at the bar. They have really good house made chips so the nachos or chips with guac is a good choice as far as the bar menu is concerned. I tend to come here for happy hour or before a show at the near by Auditorium or Armory. The off street parking also helps on busy market weekends. Pro tip, come for brunch and park in their lot. Had brunch at Bitter Honey today and loved it. We were there around 11:30 am, chose to sit inside and really like the vibe. The artwork, tile flooring, cool lighting and details like metal work and rough wood really give this place a unique feel, and I look forward to going back for dinner! We ordered the classic guac, plus I got two breakfast tacos and my friend got the egg and chorizo plate. Food quality was excellent - they are making their own tortillas and they are amazing - dense enough to not fall apart under the weight of juicy filings, great toasted-corn flavor and nicely seasoned. The egg-chorizo plate came with two or three tortillas on the side too. The guac was probably the most delicious in town - a perfect balance of salt, lime and spice. They didn't make it at the table, but you could tell it was totally fresh, and I liked the presentation of the guac in the avocado shells, with a pile of shredded fresh cabbage and some diced fresh sweet tomatoes. Highly recommended. Couple things to note: we were there before the lunch crowd and found the level of 'noise' acceptable - meaning we could hear each other (my friend is deaf in one ear) and hear the music playing at the bar; however as the place filled up,the din of other patrons drowned out the music and by the end it was loud. Also, the finish on the floor makes it kind of slippery. When we got up to leave I put my weight on the edge of our table and it slid out from under me and crashed into a wall - so loud that several people ran over to check on us. We were fine and nothing broke, but that was really unexpected (and no the floor wasn't wet or greasy). Finally, no horchata!! That's the only reason for 4 stars. I had high hopes because their menu lists 'horchata pops' (popsicles) but they didn't have either today. And I was really looking forward to getting one since I haven't found any anywhere else in Rochester....oh well. Maybe in the future. Had a nice dinner here about a month ago. Location is great - right on Railroad St. near the Public Market. Parking can be difficult to find if it's a really busy night, but we were fine. I've been here a few times before and after they hired a new head chef and am always impressed with their bar and table service as well as their food. I've tried a variety of their tacos - all delicious. My only complaint is the corn tortillas frequently get soggy and break. My favorite dish is their enchiladas. I believe they're the best in the city and that all their food is truly authentic mexican cuisine. The ambiance is classy, friendly, and comfortable. The bar is 360 degrees with many seats so groups can comfortably sit without overcrowding. Their margarita's are spot on - not too sweet or bitter, and the black and white salt is a nice touch. Really wanted to like it here but sadly can't see myself going back anytime soon. While I would give it 4 stars for service, the food was significantly lacking and was about a 2.5/5. The service itself was friendly and prompt. We were offered a spot at the bar while we waited for our table outside and the bartenders were friendly and accommodating. Our server at our outdoor table was prompt and friendly as well. The food is really where Bitter Honey misses the mark. The chips and guac are $9, I was expecting more of a house made chip with lush chunky fresh guac but instead found myself nibbling at bagged chips and which seemed like premade guac- lacking in flavor, overly whipped, nothing stood out as fresh about it. The tacos we got were decent and the flavor profile was intriguing but they were extremely heavy, especially after downing the chips and guac that left much to be desired. The beer and cocktail menu was expansive and covered a lot of options but I don't really see myself coming back on my own. I would describe these as a cross between enchiladas and a quesadilla... do I need to say more?! CARNE DEL DIA - Simply awesome! Melt in your mouth Steak! The one I had was served over spicy black refried beans which was the perfect touch to the steak to add some spicy nice flavor. OH AND DRINKS ... BITTER HONEY LIVES UP TO IT NAME! Visited Bitter Honey with some family recently and my rating has dropped a little. I'll get to those reasons later but let's start of with the good y'all! They don't require the staff to wear mask, things are changing as people get vaccinated so that is something to keep in mind. Social distancing is encouraged through the restaurant however. The Good: I ordered the quesadilla with the Barbacoa. (Pro tip: order it with the pico on the side with, the spicy chipotle sauce on the side as well!) The quesadilla was delicious as well as the loaded queso fries. I ordered for a drink, the tepache mule. My first one was amazing!!!! It was spicy with a good sweetness. It went perfect with the flavors of my food. I would recommend the cocktails and food while at the bar. (More on that later) The food arrived fast and The bad: I understand that many have different flavor palettes so while the tacos were not as good as I remembered in my first review, I tried some of my wife's food and it all seemed one note...sweet. Now many won't mind this but if you are a picky eater you may want to look elsewhere for more food. Grab a drink I would try a taco and go from there but don't go getting the full plates and you have tried something basic yet. The Ugly: The real reason they lost a star was due to a lack of consistency. Although I wasn't at the bar I had a great sight line to the restaurant and the bar included. I saw some drinks being made that ended up going to tables but after they sat for 5+ mins at the bar. Now this absolutely kills a cocktail because by time it gets to the customer it's watered down. My second tepache mule was not good. And I had to send it back which I hardly ever do and get a new one. The service was inconsistent...nice and relaxed with one table, uptight and annoyed with another. I know this happens but the fact that I noticed it from across the room shows that he couldn't hide their emotions well. In the end, bitter honey this go round was bitter sweet. Some high notes and definitely some low notes. I think 3 stars is a good start. They aren't that bad but they also aren't that good. Still give them a shot! This was our first time here. We were at the Rochester public market earlier in the day and it was approaching lunchtime, so we decided to stop in for a quick bite. The atmosphere was really neat. The restaurant is located in an old building that was refurbished, so natural wood and exposed brick throughout the restaurant. The service was excellent and the recommendations made by our server were spot on. We had adult beverages with lunch, which seemed appropriate! We both enjoyed our meals. The food was excellent. I'm a big fan of Bitter Honey! The aesthetic Inside is amazing and it has a really great vibe. The bar has plenty of seating and they have a wide variety of drinks, including margaritas obviously. I do love their menu (churros, tacos, etc) but it is pretty pricey compared to other similar restaurants. Each taco is $7 and while delicious, it's not a place I frequent because of the price. There are a lot of things to love about this restaurant. The menu, the decor, and the ambience all go a long way. Our server was lovely but the other staff interactions we had were less awesome. The hostess tried to sit us at the bar since we didn't have a reservation... even though there were tables available and we had called ahead asking if we needed a reservation. She reluctantly sat us at a hightop. Once at our table, our drinks took forever to come and the server recommended ordering well in advance of when we needed them since the bartender was also the owner and not attentive to drink orders. The food was OK, but the tacos were all on the sweet side and the drinks were nothing special. Definitely go for the Al Pastor taco if you get the taco plate! By far the best of the bunch, the shrimp is also decent. There are plenty of gluten-free options as they serve soft corn tortillas. I didn't get a clear answer on whether the chips and fried items were gluten-free, I think not because the Chile relleno has a beer batter and is deep-fried. The margaritas are incredibly well done. The White Walker is a great choice if you are looking for a sweeter sip. The nachos were the star of the show, in my opinion. Pickled red onion, crema, queso, jalapeno, all perfectly distributed across a bed of tortilla chips - no piles of naked chips hiding here! The pollo taco was delicious as well. The barbacoa taco was a little too salty for me. I would have preferred it with a cool/creamy topping to balance out the saltiness. Overall, Bitter Honey is a great place to visit for a meal or for happy hour. The margaritas alone are definitely worth the trip! I've been wanting to try Bitter Honey for the longest time now and finally got to it! The restaurant is pretty big with a large round bar area. There's outdoor as well for those nice upcoming summer days. The dining area is decorated with cute artwork. I love the furniture, it's kind of like a rustic modern vibe. I feel like the restaurant was understaffed for a Friday night. Our waiter was super nice and knowledgeable about the menu but we had to wait a loooong time for certain things like for the check to arrive and taken away. For apps we got the ceviche. The dish was presented nicely, but I have to say it's quite expensive for what you get. There's about 10 tortilla chips, max. I honestly did not see many avocado pieces, I wonder if I even got 1/4 of an avocado. The only other item that was worth anything in the bowl was the few pieces of cut up shrimp. Under all of the toppings was a green puree of something I'm not sure. The taste was lacking in some bites and better in others. If you get a good bite there's that brightness you're looking for in a ceviche. The tortilla chips weren't the best either. Although they seemed like hearty thick chips, they didn't crunch very well, they almost seemed stale? For entrees we ordered several tacos and the beef enchilada with mole. First, the tacos. We had the al pastor, shrimp and barbacoa. The tacos are not large for what you're paying. Thankfully my al pastor was stuffed with meat. The meat itself though was overly salty and overwhelmed any pineapple salsa on it. All I tasted was salt. The shrimp taco tasted of nothing. There were two shrimps on the entire taco, which weren't even jumbo shrimps. The only bright side to the shrimp taco was the cabbage slaw which offered some bright flavors. The barbacoa was the best of the three. The flavor was sweet and savory and the ratio of meet and other toppings was on point. The enchilada I actually liked despite not being a mole fan. The enchilada itself was soft and the beef was cooked really well. It allowed the mole flavors to really come out. I usually find mole to be very one note in flavor, but this one was like a savory chocolate taste with lingering heat. The portion might look small, but there's actually a lot in the little dish you get. I'd say get this dish if you're looking for something interesting with good value. Drinks were my favorite part of the dinner. This is the place for drinks if you prefer mix drinks with a sweeter profile. I had their original margarita. The margarita wasn't super sweet and was so refreshing. I loved that you can taste the alcohol but it wasn't too overwhelming. And of course the salt rim was great. My bf got the appetite for seduction. I loved the mild sweetness of this drink. I'm usually not a fan of whiskey but with everything else in it, the taste wasn't smokey at all. Overall, I'd love to come back for drinks and maybe try more of their tacos. It's not a cheap dinner here, but if you pass on the drinks, you can have a decent dinner here. read more

I had a very good experience here with my cousin. The bartender was fantastic and very friendly making recommendations on not only the drinks but food to order when we sat. Drinks are pricey starting at $10 a piece but for someone who enjoys a good cocktail I don't mind. I have to say they have a great variety for everyone no matter what liquor you prefer. The service was the highlight of the experience with everyone incredibly helpful in descriptions and just plain conversation. The spicy guacamole was very good but even better was the perfectly seasoned chips. Wow! Could not stop eating them. I had two tacos both were very good but I preferred the carne asada. Bitter Honey has trendy vibes. The food is boring and super overpriced; I would expect something that looks pretty at least. The interior is unique and I loved all the different wall art. It's dark with some mood lighting. The decoration overall is pretty cool. The music is very loud and I had a difficult time having a conversation across the table. Our neighboring tables were also all very loud, so not a great date night spot. It was pretty crowded when I went. Our waitress managed to be attentive, quite friendly and cheerful despite being so busy. The food was very mediocre and the presentation was just disappointing. I was excited to see that bitter honey had some vegan options. We started off with guacamole, salsa and chips. The guacamole was super disappointing. It was too salty, overly smooth and super bland; it was like there was nothing else in the guacamole. The salsa was nothing special. I would expect something with more pizazz with that price tag. Next, we ordered nachos with vegan cheese. We shouldn't have gotten the nachos, taco and chips and guac/salsa because there were a lot of overlapping ingredients; that was my mistake for not reading closer. They were yummy but definitely not enough toppings per chip. I've had better and more filling vegan nachos around. It was disappointingly boring. Our singular $7 calabacin taco, which we wanted to try first before getting more of, didn't taste good. I normally love zucchini tacos, but this really hit the mark. The fact that it was a tempura didn't add anything to it. The taco was super bland. I appreciate the interesting combo in the calabacin taco, but I wouldn't get it again. The presentation of the food was so lame. I expect a pricey, trendy place like this to have pretty instagramable food at the least. Where are my pretty & unique toppings, and fun food vessels? Considering the modern and unique ambiance, I would have expected food to match. I was thoroughly disappointed by the bland, unimaginative and repetitious food here. The prices are ridiculous for most items and I didn't feel it was worth it at all. I don't see myself coming back or recommending Bitter Honey, especially when there are so many tastier and cheaper options around Rochester. read more

Wow - this place is FUN! Absolutely beautiful interior with great service and drinks! There is also outdoor seating, but we sat inside. I feel like this place could turn into a club after dinner service with the cool vibes and decor. I asked our waitress for a recommendation for a sweet drink and she recommended the Kokoma, which was rum and pineapple, with a frozen cube of blackberry purée. It was amazing! I sat there eating the melting purée even after I finished the drink. We ordered the nachos to start and they were AWESOME. Big portion with fresh ingredients. We also got tacos. The battered cod was the best, the blackened shrimp was pretty good. I didn't like the barbacoa one as it was pretty dried out and flavorless. But overall everything was great and will definitely recommend it to friends! read more
