Septic tank toilet paper mention by Crystal is accurate. Also Host asked us to minimize using the lights in the hallway, so you get to be environmentally conscientious. Stayed in the "Windsail" room. AMAZING view. It's like you're only in water cause you only see water. Individually temperature controlled room. beauitful house, seriously. Every room seems unique in an arty and aesthetically pleasing way. Luannah showed us the rec room she is in the middle of building and it looks great. super lovely property, kind of like a zen garden mixed with human size hobbit environment, like the streams, the rocks, the paths, the hills. Massage by Luannah, a german RMT, was educational and helpful. I read a lot of the reviews and she really does know her stuff. I have chronic pain and long standing issues from an MVA and she really did help. My roomie got a massage that was more related to stress and emotions. Theres only one RMT so we took turns. We both came out feeling genuinely happy. The Massage room is a separate house, also another amazing structure. Its clean, modern, well-set up. She asks you tell her about your body and when you go to disrobe, she goes behind these doors and then you tell her when youre ready. I actually love the face pillow that you put your head on when lying face down, it is, for once, comfortable!! Host: Luannah said she was going to send me referrals in Vancouver for a chiro and an RMT, which I thought was really kind and thoughtful of her. She knocks on the door and also responds to texts and calls. Her husband and kid came home later in the evening. She was super caring, thoughtful and helpful. Even packed us food to go cause we were in a rush for the ferry. Provided advil. Wifi is good. Shower nozzle was super tricky to get right. There's cat in the main area and I think I only sneezed and blew my nose a handful of times, which I'd say youre pretty safe imo. Cat is 19 year old Jeremiah who goes outside and stays downstairs, super cute!! Hot tub was my super favorite part.

Overall, we had a good time and enjoyed the peaceful setting, but there are a few things that I think are worth pointing out for other travellers: 1) Communication Communication with Luannah was unfortunately poor. When I first inquired about the property by email, I did not receive a response, so I eventually called and left a message and was later contacted by phone. A couple of days before our arrival, we tried calling again and left messages because we had a few practical questions about the water quality, whether we needed to bring our own drinking water, and whether early check-in was possible. My husband eventually received a text saying that we would receive the pre-arrival information by email on the day of our departure. For a remote location, having this information only on the day of arrival makes it difficult to plan ahead. The pre-arrival email was indeed sent that day, but it landed in my junk folder, so I did not see it until later. 2) Wi-Fi The Wi-Fi was quite unreliable during our stay. It worked intermittently but would generally stop working after 20-30 minutes and then come back again hours later. This also meant that the TV wouldn't work properly. This may not be an issue for guests looking to completely disconnect, but it is worth knowing in advance if reliable internet is important to you. 3) Jacuzzi We were disappointed that we were not able to use the jacuzzi. When we arrived, we saw that guests needed to book it in advance, so we requested to use it. We were told that the temperature was not hot enough yet and that Luannah would keep us updated. I went up to check it out and noticed that cleaning supplies, brooms, and used paper towels were scattered around the area. The following day, I asked about the jacuzzi again and received the same response regarding the temperature. When I checked again, the area had not been cleaned or prepared for guest use, and unfortunately this did not change during our stay. Overall, we still had a good time at the Chalet and enjoyed the beautiful, peaceful location. However, based on our experience, I would not recommend it to travellers specifically looking for a wellness retreat or a polished, fully maintained getaway. The shower was slightly leaking, the patio needed some repair, and the outdoor seating areas were not properly clean. The property as a whole seemed like it would benefit from some general maintenance and attention to detail.

My friends and I got together really just to visit and catch up, with no real plans for activities in mind. The property gave us plenty of room to spread out in comfort, and a spacious kitchen and dining area to come together for meals. We made use of the large deck area as well, with the beautiful fire table and seating area. There is a hot tub on the deck as well, but it was not available during our stay. The property was clean and well-equipped, with enough kitchen equipment and basic ingredients for us to prepare anything we needed. We were impressed by how roomy it was, and the house is furnished with rustic pieces that felt very relaxed and cozy. The property had no TVs when we stayed there, but this was not a problem for us as we came there to visit. There is internet service on the property, which was sufficient to supplement the sometimes spotty cellular reception. Mayne Island has numerous places to discover, including a great outdoor pub, some wonderful casual dining spots, and some amazing walking areas. We ventured out for walks down to nearby beaches and saw quite a bit of local wildlife, including a number of sea birds. We also took several drives around the island, visiting St. John Point, and Campbell Point trail, which takes you through a beautiful forest of arbutus trees. There are a few small grocery stores on the island, but I would recommend a larger shop on the mainland before catching the ferry across, as we did. There is a wine/liquor store on the island as well, and the Mayne Island Brewing Company sells its beers by the bottle, as well as offering tastings and pints to stay. I loved our stay at The Grove, and we are already making plans to return. This is a great spot for a family or larger group who wants to gather in some peace and quiet on beautiful Mayne Island.

Everything is really as beautiful as the pictures and you can see it all from the bedroom! It was also such a bonus to get to watch the sunrise and the sunset in bed without having to venture out. Joe and Dianne are the hosts at Above the Narrows and they were very friendly and helpful on our trip. Joe gave us many great recommendations while we were there and they also have a guidebook in the room that pointed us to some great spots as well. Joe also prepared the breakfast each morning and it was very delicious! He even used local eggs which made the meals extra special. I was very happy with the amount of interaction I had with the hosts. They are not overwhelming at all, leaving us to enjoy our breakfasts alone. The room also has its own separate entrance so there is quite a bit of privacy. That said, Joe was very responsive and was always happy to answer any of our questions. The location of the bed and breakfast is also very convenient if you are driving. Personally, I visited Salt Spring Island without a car once and it was definitely not a very good experience because all the fun things on the island are quite far apart. But there is a nice network of trails right by the house and we could go on morning/evening strolls through the forest with ocean views too! We had such a great time here and I would definitely recommend this place!

Betty has thought of virtually everything a traveler could need and guests get free reign of the upstairs during their stay. I love that Betty welcomes people to take home unfinished books from her library - "books are meant to be read, not sit on a shelf," she says. Breakfast was made at the prearranged time convenient for us (so appreciated!) and was delicious and abundant. She sat and chatted with us during breakfast and is so personable. We had to depart on a jet plane that afternoon after our 4-day trip to the Evergreen State and had a few bottles of wine that we hadn't enjoyed so I offered them to Betty and she even suggested she could take their value off our bill, although I refused because they were a gift to her for our lovely stay.
