Classic, locally owned bait and tackle shop. Opens early and has all you could ever need. Lots of spots within 15 minutes to fish from the shore. Great price for 2 dozen live shrimp. Service is great, welcoming and not annoyed if you're from out of town -- at least we couldn't tell -- which is more than can be said about other tackle shops in other places. If you got a kid or first timer with you and you want to get them excited, head to Melbourne Beach Pier around sunrise and you're guaranteed to catch catfish nonstop, do yourself a favor after a couple and head to Kiwanis Park at Geiger Point to make the most of your time and get some drum (can't keep them at any size in the area) and snappers. read more

Great shop and the owners wife was really helpful and laid back. I'm not an experience fisherman but she recommended me a combo rod and reel and was perfect for catching all kinds of fish in the area. Please don't make the mistake I did and buy a cheap 40 dollar rod from another shop down the road. I will def go back to this shop in the future! They also sale bait, live and frozen. Don't understand all the other reviews saying this place is friendly; didn't get that at all, personally. Called about getting an old reel lubed and respooled and I was told (curtly) I had to speak with the owner about that and he wasn't in yet. It was 1000, so I called back at 1500 and was told (curtly) he had already left. So I called the next day at 1130 and was told he wouldn't be in for the next three days. So I asked how someone was supposed to go about getting their reel worked on if the owner was that hard to reach and the gentleman (who doesn't work on them) said "well, honestly we're about 15 jobs deep with that right now. It'd be a few weeks, anyway.". Not at all surprising if the only guy who works on them can't be bothered to come into work for more than 3 hours a week. I own two business in the area and completely understand not working more than you have to IF you have good people working for you. But if you have some rude lady answering the phone and you're 15 orders deep on a job only you work... I don't know; seems like lazy business practice to me. As a local small business owner, I do my best to support other local small businesses, and if there had been another one in town that worked on reels, I wouldn't have even called twice. So it looks like I'm taking my business to strike zone fishing; who offer a $40 flat fee +parts to fix a reel... And you don't have to wait on bubba to feel like coming in to work. We visited Black Dog's three times during our vacation in Melbourne, and every time the staff was friendly, informative and hilarious. If you're looking for a no-BS outfitter for anything from saltwater fishing on a charter, to surf, to cat fishing in the intercoastal waterway, they have you covered. The gentleman on staff actually made his wife wait on us just so he could set us up with the right gear. If I'm in the area again, Black Dog is the ONLY place I will go for fishing gear. read more

What a great place! What great break from all the Disneyworld vacation stuff. I needed a break from the family and called around to get some fishing done. My go to for bait and tackle in the Melbourne Beach area. They are rarely out of bait, and have a wide varitey of live, frozen, and artificial. You can also pick up tackle and gear along with helpful advice on what is biting where and on what bait. Parking can be a bit tricky as the few spaces require you to back all the way into the busy road to get out. read more

We were in town just to do some fishing for the weekend. (we are just novice/casual anglers) The guy working at the shop was so helpful! He taught us to properly rig live shrimp bait, what baits to use for what fish, and where each bait works best in the area. Then we caught about 25 fish over the course of two days. One of which we kept and they let us use their cleaning station to filet the fish (we were staying in a hotel) and he even coached my husband through the filleting process and got rid of the carcass for us. We will definitely be back, and we can't thank the man that was working that day enough for all of the great information and lessons. Our only mistake was not getting his name so we could mention him in this review. He was working Friday afternoon Aug. 16th. What a great teacher he was. Thanks again for everything!
