I like the gelato here since there's literally nowhere else nearby with frozen options. However, it seems it's not available year round. Chocolate truffles aren't bad. Finally tried the mini cupcakes -- Red velvet mini cupcake is ok. Carrot cake icing was WAY too sweet esp with it supposedly being the only cream cheese frosting (should be less sweet...but was more sweet than the vanilla buttercream). I will stay away from these. I put in a cake order almost a week in advance. It was simple. We agreed black icing, red writing, and a character on it. When I came to pick up the cake they did NOTHING that I asked for. He even said he needed to change the icing from whipped to buttercream to dye it black so I did even though I don't like buttercream that much I wanted to do exactly what my son wanted for his birthday. Then the guy (the manager) argued with me that I only ordered the cherry cake with buttercream. I told him to show me the online order in his hands. He went to the back and scribbled out black icing with red writing. As if I'm stupid. I show him where it said black icing red writing under his scribbles and he said "we don't have black icing here). As if they don't have food coloring, I'm starting at multiple cookies with black frosting on them as we speak. He was very rude and they told me it would be an HOUR to fix it as if they didn't have all week to make it the right way. He also said "black frosting would make it taste bad" and "you can't dye frosting black". I've baked cakes, I've made black frosting. They clearly have to because theyre using it on the cookies (guess they taste bad then?). He kept coming up with any new excuse he could find to NOT fix the cake. No quality checks or double checking the order. How do you completely screw up the entire design so bad that you didn't do not one thing that was asked for. He would only take 10 dollars off. Hands down the best cakes around! Delicious, beautiful, and (contrary to many reviews) very competitively priced. I first purchased a special order cake from them a few months ago for a baby shower I was hosting. I did their lemon cake in a vintage piping style. It was stunning, and everyone at the party asked where the cake was from. Just last month, I purchased a 16th birthday cake for my young cousin. It was very last minute notice, yet they still were able to accommodate me. The cake was beautiful, and yet again tasted amazing. I've also purchased some of their ready-to-go cakes. The shadow cake is particularly great! For context, before having kids I loved to bake and baked birthday cakes for myself, family, and friends. While I no longer have the time required to bake, I am VERY picky when it comes to purchasing baked goods, because if I am spending money on something it needs to be as good or better than what I would make myself as an amateur. I've tried so many bakeries from Greenwich to Westport and everything in between, and the quality of ingredients and final result of the other places I tried couldn't come close to Black Forest. Finally, I'm very confused by the complaints about their pricing, because their pricing is VERY competitive. Their ready-to-go cakes are not much more than grocery store cakes despite being much higher quality, and their custom cakes are so inexpensive that I asked if they had given me the wrong number when I first ordered a cake from them. The special order cakes I have bought from Black Forest would have all cost at least 3x more at other bakeries. 100% recommend if you want beautiful and quality cakes. read more

I'm decently torn on writing this review. I found this place years ago when I worked in White Plains for an MSP, and they sent me all over CT. The place stands out like a sore thumb but in a good way. It is in the middle of the block surrounded by older buildings with boutique shops, and then there is this beautiful Bavarian building! Hahaha! It makes it very easy to find. So when I came here years ago, it was later on in the afternoon on my way back to the office. Today at my new job, they sent me to Stamford, so I left a little earlier and wanted to get some pastries and pretzels for a snack before I arrived at the client. I walk into a stunning bakery with dark wood notes all over. It does a great job transporting you to the actual black forest. They have an automatic sliding door, and as soon as you step in, the staff greets you! I wanted to get some of the pretzels that they are known for to find out they are only made and sold on Saturdays, which was fairly disappointing. I went with some oatmeal cookies and a ham and cheese croissant. While waiting for them to heat the croissants up, I decided to look at the cabinets closer, and I got my son 2 elmo cookies and my daughter a unicorn! Hopefully, she appreciates it, hahaha! I know my son will! I also got my wife some cake pops! I ate the croissants on the way to Stamford, and they were delicious! I also managed to grab a bite of the oatmeal cookie and wow was it good! 6 it worth the very high price tag? $7 for a small croissant with hame and cheese, and $4 for a cookie... eh. Even the cookies I got for my kids were $4 a piece and the cake pops were $4 each or 6 for $22. Inside is gorgeous and very very very very clean! Staff is very friendly! I took a look at the pies and cakes and they were stunning! But pies were around $30 !,$ cakes. Even a 7 inch was $45! My wife got a plain vanilla 7 inch from shop Rite Monday for $17.. so $45 is a tad bit much. Maybe the quality is worth it. And they have been here for many years so people still go! Personally, I am unable to come here for anything beyond a treat. I spent $60 on 6 cookies, 2 croissants, and 6 cake pops... All in all a very nice bakery, very clean and pleasant staff. So Completely dried out that they should have donated the cake to a homeless shelter 3 days prior to selling it. Grossly overpriced, stale, cheap ingredients. Very dissatisfied and disappointed. I bought a birthday cake for my wife and my jaw almost dropped when I paid for it. I could have bought two cakes at a typical bakery for the same money or made four at home. The cake presented well but one bite in and it tasted like it was three days old. Ordered a confetti cake for my daughter's bridal shower. It was so amazing some attendees went later to get a cake for their own occasion, like Easter. I checked on my order a couple of times to avoid any unwelcome surprises that on the day of the shower. Staff was gracious and understanding. If you haven't been to the store, it has a lovely chalet-looking exterior, reminding me of previous trips I've made to Bavaria. And it smells as good as you would expect inside. Cake was fresh and super delicious, and their buttercream is the best in town. In fact the best in the area! They are pricey- prime Greenwich real estate. They charged me $35 alone to hand draw two butterflies on the cake. That was a lot. However the cake itself definitely lived up to and beyond expectations. I'm often stumped by how few good bakeries there seem to be these days. In my home town - Pelham NY, in Westchester - there are at least three bakeries. Only one - Provisions - is really good, and they have a pretty limited selection of products. So when I stumbled across this bakery while running an errand in Greenwich, I decided to give it a try. Glad I did. Its pastries tend towards Central European fare (a positive, in my book). The samples I tried were very good, if not quite out of this world mind-blowing. The store - which has a sort of Alpen-haus-y feel - is neat, clean, and tidy, and the staff is very nice. I don't think I would travel to Greenwich just to go to Black Forest Pastry, but if I were in Greenwich, I'd likely make a detour for the shop. If your pastry tastes tend towards Central European, this would be a good destination for you. Try the cinnamon disk - it was outstanding. Recommended. read more

Very poor stollen. I purchased a medium sized stollen just this morning and decided to have a slice after lunch. What a disappointmen! The exterior was so wet that the powdered sugar dissolved in a sodden mass on the plate. In the first two (generous) slices the there was no sign of fruit, other than two soggy raisins resting in a tan color bread. Very disappointing, and a product I would not recommend. I don't know if this loaf was a fluke, or if that is the usual for this particular shop's stollen, but I shall not try another one. read more

While passing through town on a rare visit today, I had a hankering for a "smiley cookie," something I used to get after guitar lessons when I was a kid growing up in town. I haven't been to the bakery since 2003. They still had the cookies, but they have--like everything else--shrunk! The price, however, through the roof! I paid $4.25 for a stale, dry, flavorless cookie with crunchy icing on top. It was disgusting and so disappointing. To boot, the workers were all horribly arrogant, and I don't just mean typical Greenwich arrogant (I'm from there, I can say it). They didn't even want to give me the time of day. I was standing at the counter, and the workers were just milling about and ignoring me. Finally, one of them got around to asking, "is there something I can help you with?" No, genius. I'm standing here for posterity. I should have carried the cookie back inside and told them to choke on it, but I thought better of it and fed it to the squirrels. My boyfriend, Lee J., has two tricky things about his birthday: His birthday is Christmas Eve, and he *really* loves Black Forest Cake. This can make things difficult, because that's not a cake that just any bakery makes. So, I was a little bit nervous after moving to Stamford, wondering if I would be able to find a suitable place to get him a cake. I did a Yelp search for Black Forest Cake, and of course this place was at the top of the list, and the reviews seemed good, so I checked out the website, and then picked up the phone and placed an order. Phone service was very friendly and I had no problem ordering a cake to pick up the Friday before Christmas. When I went to pick the cake up, it was definitely busy. Luckily I managed to snag a spot nearby. The facade of the store is adorable, giving the appearance of a little Black Forest style cottage was suddenly plopped in the middle of fashionable Greenwich. It's small inside, with just a long L counter/bakery case, and a few tables, mostly piled high with holiday gifts. I was sorely tempted by some of the other things on offer, particularly the buttercreme filled trees, but I decided to resist, picking up my cake. I had read on their site (and from some of the reviews) that they offered a 10% discount for cash, so I came prepared. Since this place is a little pricier than other bakeries, every bit helps! My cake was brought out and safely packaged up for me, with a reminder that it needs to stay refrigerated because of the whipped cream frosting. I took it home, and we had it on Christmas Eve. It was an excellent cake! There was a nice chocolate sponge, with a nice cherry filling, chocolate filling, and a altogether well done cake. They had the most delicate "Happy Birthday" writing on the top of the cake. Altogether a great cake, and I'll definitely be back for my cake-purchasing needs! read more

I had an opportunity to grab a quick and incredibly unhealthy breakfast on my way through the upper-crust town of Greenwich at the Black Forest Pastry Shop and was delighted with the selection, variety, and service at this spot. I enjoyed a warm Cinnamon Bun and Croissant along with a Perrier (when in Rome) which was the perfect thing to hit the spot on a cold morning. I was given a blueberry pie to take back home on my journey to NJ. I didn't expect the pie to be bad but, I also wasn't expecting it to be the most delicious blueberry pie I've ever tasted -- And that's exactly what it was, THE most delicious blueberry pie, EVER! So simple and rustic yet bursting in flavor of huge, sweet, juicy blueberries. My only complaint is that I don't live closer to this place. Then again, if I did, I'd probably weigh 700 lbs. We go to this wonderful, clean, fresh bakery a lot. I have never had an item here that was not fresh as opposed to some other bakeries. My only complaint and I do know others have the same, is the prune danish has a very small amount of the prune filling which seems inadequate. No one wants to spend $5 for a prune danish thats 90% bread and we have mentioned it but to no avail thus far.
