Lets get started shall we Oysters - east coast and west coast, the brine is present, the mignonette was wonderful and this amuse bouche can get a 8.5 out of 10 Shishito Peppers - That sweet gochujang glaze is a wonderful touch. The peppers were rendered perfect. 8 out of 10 Shumai Sliders - These are amazing. The shumai we know is usually eaten as a stand alone dumpling, but this format was wild. I appreciate the out of the box thinking. 9.5 out of 10 Galbi Jjim - The short rib was amazing. So tender it melts in your mouth. That mash made from coconut and taro was a good match. The brocolini exceptional. 9 out of 10. I do appreciate a good fusion joint. This place is definitely two thumbs up in my book. If you like discovering new places to smash. Hit that follow button. We made a reservation but probably didn't need to. It was lively, but not crowded. We were seated in the back which has a direct view into the kitchen via a glass wall. The waitstaff were attentive and lovely and the room itself was well lit and comfortable. We thought the wine prices were high ($15 for a glass of regular wine) so we just had water. I'm always happy to see that a menu lists which items are gluten free, so I was very excited that I'd have some options at a Korean restaurant! There was a lot in front and to the side of the restaurant for easy parking. We walked in on a Saturday night and we were able to get seats at a nice half-circle booth near the bar. Our server was wonderful about explaining the menu when I had questions about the gluten free options. She also told me about dishes that were not marked, but could be made gluten free with some modifications. We ordered drinks, but the bartender was busy, so they took a while to come out. We had water, so it wasn't a big deal. The drinks were both good (Corktown Princess mocktail and Oaxacan After Midnight, and we appreciated that the mocktail was not exorbitantly priced like it is at most other places. Our food was cooked properly and tasted great! We both the Barramundi the best because it was so flavorful and the skin was so crispy! We'll definitely have to come back to try the Happy Hour specials and other delicious looking items on the menu! read more

I love this restaurant. The space was so awesome and had different vibes based on which room you sit. There was plenty of free parking in the lot. The customer service was magnificent. For cocktails, I got the Corkyown Queen and Corkyown Princess and they were both absolutely one of the best drinks I've ever had. I just wish there was more drink in the glass because. All of the food had unique and delicious flavor profiles and textures. Our favorite was the crispy rice and I particularly enjoyed it because of the citrus freshness to it. I also got the weekly special Octopus and I had no complaints at all. Perfect. My next favorite was the carrots; they had some type of almond sauce underneath the carrots and other vegetables and it was addictive. The karage chicken was delicious. The tempura brocolli was also very good. The bulgogoi fries did what they needed to as well. The crab udon was ok in my opinion;it wasn't bad but just too oily for my particular liking. The short ribs were out least favorite, they were cooked very well but didn't have a lot of flavor compared to the rest for the dishes. We did let the server know and they were extremely willing to accept the feed back. All the food was pretty decent size quantity for small plates. It was all very fresh tasting. We didn't see anything stand out for us dessert wise, so didn't try that. This will definitely be on the must go back over and over again list. read more

Looking forward to when this place opens back up! My husband and I visited when they first opened and were very excited to try Black Ginger - we had heard the best things. It lived up to the hype! We tried the dumplings as appetizers and loved them. For mains, we had the hearts of palm curry and the special of the day which was a seafood paella. We had the matcha chocolate dessert. This is hands down one of the best restaurants in Detroit now. I think by this point I have ordered nearly everything and have loved all of it. I will say pricing and service wise, this is a more upscale experience. I would recommend trying the specials, the fried chicken, skirt steak, bulgogi fries, sliders, dumplings, kimchi fried rice, cucumbers, and kimchi. But you cannot go wrong with anything here. For drinks, the corktown queen and laid back are very good and fresh. I have not done the soju experience yet, but I will be back for that soon. I also love the interior and table settings. Happy Hour at Black Ginger is a certified banger. They do have some drink specials but really, the $10 gimlet or daquari that's on the regular menu is more than sufficient. They also have an extensive Japanese whiskey menu, beers on tap, sake, and wine, as well as a very creative cocktail menu. Food is fantastic. I only had the dumplings and the shumai sliders and had two dumplings and a slider leftover... It's probably a good place to come with one or two people so just can get even more things for variety. I would like to come back for real dinner someday based on my HH food. Staff was fantastic, very friendly and personable. Great parking lot just out front, bar and restaurant areas are very nicely decorated. The only issue is, that when it got busy in the bar area, the volume went through the roof. Unlike most places, Black Ginger actually has some sound dampeners in the ceiling (you can see in my picture), but with concrete floors and a tile and marble bar, they probably need double the ceiling dampeners and maybe some wall hangings to really get the noise under control. But I appreciate they made an effort and I didn't have to put my earplugs in until a very loud party came in so that's a win. Highly recommend! read more

Hosted in the previous Red Dunn, we were very pleased from welcome to departure. We were a group of 6 and Each one gives a AFTER being seated and welcomed by the hostess, we met Tommy, our waiter. He answered questions, if he didn't know regarding a certain drink, he found out. The suggestions were just right. I suggest table shares because each taste is unique and You don't want to miss out. He even showed us a true Korean way to have our drink. Ok please order the Korean Fried chicken...We have been in search of this dish done well. I'm so glad that Black Ginger has opened! It has such a cozy atmosphere in a new place in Detroit with good parking at a Hotel. The food is great quality, especially the vegan menus. Ok get ready Detroit because this place is going to be bangin' . I experienced some amazing food incredible service and a space that is open inviting and will make you want to come back. There is a sense of fusion blending Korean and Spanish flavors into an absolutely immersive journey through food and drink. From my experience the palate will be satisfied beyond expectations. The bar staff is innovative and can create a drink on the fly that will blow your mind. We experienced the "Medicina a Latina" a first creation of its kind that will knock your socks off. I was surprised at how unfriendly the hostess was. She was also a waitress so perhaps she was feeling overwhelmed. The service in general was a VERY slow start (putting two plates on a table took approximately 10 mins), waiting for waiter to get first drink order in, etc. I am just a stickler for first impressions (and yes we had a reservation). We found Black Ginger and headed in after the Tigers' game. Our waiter was very nice and told us they had only been open for 2 months. Concept is small, shareable plates, interesting sounding cocktails and desserts. The booths out by the bar were super cool. We were seated in the dining room which had less ambiance and they also have a patio out back if you prefer. We ordered multiple drinks -- Pump up the jam was a bit too sweet, the sesame daiquiri had a nice foam but was not very interesting unless you crunched on a sesame seed. Gimlet, Oaxacan after midnight and Corktown Queen were hits. For food - we ordered a lot. By far the favorite was the Korean Fried Chicken. It was perfectly cooked, juicy inside and crispy outside with a sauce and topped on a bed of cabbage and radish slaw. It was a larger portion of chicken and could probably have been a good meal for 1 person. Galbi Jjim was also very good but double the price of the chicken. Shishitos were good but 10 small peppers for $10 might not have been the best bang for your buck. Bulgogi fries- I could eat everyday. Fries weren't amazing but just a base for really good bulgogi. Octopus skewers with XO sauce were ok. Octopus was cooked well but the sauce didn't fit it, in my opinion. It felt too heavy and masked any flavor of the meat. Crispy rice salad was not good, the balance was way off. My son got a big bite of ginger. I think I got the mango. The fish sauce felt like it was poured on directly, some bites way too fishy. The crispy was weird, I was hoping for the beautiful crisp you get at the bottom of a pan but this was just crunchy. For dessert we tried the yuzu cheesecake with berry compote. I didn't taste yuzu and the cheesecake was more cake-like as it was very dry. Not bad, just not nearly as good as mine ;) They are only 2 months in, so hits and misses may be expected, but the misses are hard to overlook at this price point. read more

Black Ginger should win an award for having a GREAT STAFF, Great food and fun vibe. We happened upon this spot and can truly say that they take great care in selecting only the top ingredients. We went at 5:00, so were given both the happy hour menus and the full dinner menu. The barramundi was absolutely phenomenal. I would come back just for that. The rest of the food was somewhat unremarkable. I may have just chosen the dishes that were not my taste. My biggest gripe with this place is that the decor is non existent! Boring and bland. For the price of the food, I'd hope that the atmosphere looked a little better. I've debated about writing this review or waiting to come back and try other dishes before I post. First, I love that there was ample parking. I really like the decor and design as well. Modern, but comfortable. The waitress was friendly and knowledgeable. Drinks were excellent as well. There are somethings they need to rethink about some menu items. The udon is soooo salty and noodles were too soft. They need chew. They are not trying to be full traditional Asian fare here, but if they want to make something Asian it needs to be done well and reflect the correct standard and technique. I want to see this place succeed, but I hope they really consider preparation and expected flavor profiles a bit more. read more

With a name like Black Ginger, and dishes with Korean names, one expects the tastes and textures of the dishes to be a bit similar to the namesake. It is disappointed to find some of the dishes' flavors to be meek and mild with no resemblance to the namesake. The service is very good along with the cocktails and the ambience/decor is enjoyable. I may give this place another try in hopes that the flavors are more aggressive. read more

I dined here with two others arriving during happy hour and ordered seven of the eight items from their happy hour menu. Everything was absolutely delicious and a great value for your money as the portions are quite large! After eating the appetizers we had a bit more room in our stomach's so we ordered desert which were the Matcha Tart and Milk Bun Rotating Jam. Both were just as delicious as the appetizers so be sure to save room for them! We also had the Oaxacan After Midnight, one of their speciality cocktails and it's very flavorful and a must have! I've had Korean food many times before, but the chef takes it to the next level with its fusion style. The atmosphere was very enjoyable and relaxing as it's a non-rushed dinning experience. At no time did we feel as if we were being hurried along to get in the next guest. Our waitress Lena was amazing to say the least! She was personable, friendly, knowledgeable on the menu items, and quite attentive. She went above and beyond to ensure our dining experience was memorable. We also had the pleasure of meeting the owner Harold and had a nice conversation with him when he visited our table to ensure we were enjoying our evening. He too is quite personable and friendly and between him, the staff, and the food, this restaurant will continue to be a success!
