My wife and I were in Detroit for a long weekend and decided to have dinner at Bar Pigalle. We are fans of French food. Our server was very nice and was thorough in explaining the menu. The dining room is intimate and nicely decorated. For dinner, I had the duck confit cassoulet. The duck was very tender with a nice, crispy skin. The cassoulet was chock full of bacon. My wife had artichoke gnocchi. I tried the gnocchi and it was very fluffy! For dessert we shared a creme brulee, and some apricot and saffron sorbet. I really enjoyed the sorbet. So this restaurant is kind of hidden, almost like a speakeasy. Its inside a building that looks residual. Luckily we saw the huge doors with the restaurant name above it and that's when knew we made it. Once inside, we were seated in no time in this beautiful teal booth. The interior is very warm and cozy. Looking at the cocktail menu, I absolutely had to try the 'home by dark'... and it was such a great choice that I ordered another one before entrees were served. For appetizer we ordered the steak tartar. I usually love tartar, but this one was not a top contender for me. But I will say the sardines on top gave it the saltiness it was lacking. For entrees we got the black tiger prawns and the mussels. Everything was cooked great, I just personally think French cuisine is not for me. The unique flavor just isn't for my palate. We were really looking forward to visiting Bar Pigalle, as most of the things we've heard have been excellent. Unfortunately, the meal was disappointing across the board. I don't mind paying for bread service, but it better be good. At $8, the bread was not warm and instead of regular butter, it came with an unusual Korean-inspired compound butter. The whole thing was salty and weird. I really enjoy steak tartare, and was eager to try theirs. It was fine, but nothing special. We wanted to get the lyonnaise potatoes, but were told it would be impossible to order them without onions. Instead, we got the hand cut frites which come with malt vinegar aioli. When we asked to substitute it with a garlic aioli, the waitress replied: "Chef said no." The steak frites were fine, but at $69, pretty underwhelming. The first bite of the roasted half chicken was dry, but got better after that. At $250, the meal just wasn't very good. This cozy, extremely cutely decorated spot is excellent. We were in town visiting and staying downtown and happened upon it for a spot to have dinner. The servers are super friendly and patient. We started off with cocktails (both alcoholic and NA). They were delightful and well balanced. We started with the bread course which comes with an incredible compound butter that has just the right amount of garlic. Both the beet salad and petit salad are quite nice. I opted for the sea bass. I give Bar Pigalle 5 stars because I can't give it 10. This place is A-Mazing! My wife and I went downtown to go to the DIA which is on the same street to the north and you can see the rear entrance to Comerica within walking distance to the south. They opened up for dinner at 5pm. We were waiting outside at quarter to 5 to get in for a walk in. We planned to wait until 5 to go inside but people started going in to get in line early and now we know why. By the time they seated us at 5, there were a few people in front of us and probably 20 people behind us. It's been so long since we've had a restaurant experience as good as this from beginning to end. First, the staff was amazing. Everyone had each other's backs. We were first seated by the hostess. Then the servers assistant came right over, introduced herself, got us waters. Next our server Michael who was incredibly attentive introduced himself, gave us some info about the restaurant the building and the surrounding area. His timing and conversation were great. What really set Bar Pigalle service above other's is that the hostess was walking by, noticed we had empty drinks and asked if she could get us another drink. We already had drinks on the way but that is INCREDIBLE service and TEAMWORK! The manager even made sure to deliver our drinks a few times. We waited for nothing. I can't think of any other restaurant experience where I've felt so taken care of. Not at any of the nicest fine dining restaurants in the Metro D area, Vegas or anywhere else. Now, the food and drinks. I had the Wayward Sun, the Last Call and the Late Checkout. All were good but the Late Checkout might be the best drink I've ever had. Imagine a Manhattan blended perfectly with a Vanilla Latte. I wasn't sure if the flavors would work together but it was delicious. We had the Black Tiger prawns for the appetizer and the Half Chicken and Great Lakes White Fish with Crab Burre Blanc and Trout Roe with lemon for entrees. The prawns were cooked perfectl. The chicken had a delicious crispy skin seasoned perfectly with root vegetables. The stand out star was the White Fish. All the components blended together perfectly with two perfectly cooked filets. I've had crème brulee many times and this was by far the worst. It was also not chilled at all. Just... bad. Especially for an alleged French cuisine restaurant! Also had the steak + frites. It was.... Oof... steak was super gristle and hard to chew. It was also flavorless. I ended up dipping it in the garlic aioli that was meant for the fries LOL! My most recent Bar Pigalle experience was, unfortunately, disappointing. The place was about half empty despite it being a Saturday night. We came in with some friends who were excited to try their burger, but we were told that we couldn't order it at a table and would have to move to the bar (and not even face each other) if we wanted to order it. The server even told us that the rail against the window was still her section... if it's still her section, why couldn't she just bring us the burgers to the table literally 6 steps away?! They didn't offer any explanation for this policy and almost seemed annoyed we asked. It's literally their best, most popular menu item -- how is this policy helpful and do they not feel the need to explain the reasoning? Anyway, I ended up ordering the duck confit and a side of fries. The server forgot about my fries and I was halfway done with the duck before she came to the table again and I reminded her of the fries. I was almost done with my meal by the time the fries came. The sweet potatoes that came with the duck were also very undercooked and hard. The duck and cocktails were solid. Overall, just a bit of a disappointing experience. I feel like it used to be much better when they first opened. There was less pretension and they used to host super fun monthly wine events, which are now gone. Their cocktails are still solid and I guess I'd recommend it if you're alone or just with one other person since you can sit at the bar, but I feel like it falls shy of expectations for a nice sit-down dinner. read more

I had walked by Bar Pigalle so many times and never had the courage to walk in and to my surprise it wasn't a stuffy french bistro, rather a modern open welcoming spot. I adored the staff there and we got a a corner table (I even has a run in with other friends and they were so accommodating joining tables with us). The oysters were super fresh and sweet. the mussels weren't in the traditional wine sauce, but one that was boasting with flavor, spicy, sweet, properly acidic ( enough for me to drink it later). This is one of my favorite restaurants in Detroit hands down. I come here atleast once a month to get their burger and oysters. Not trying to be dramatic but one of the best burgers I ever had. The oysters are a bit pricey but always so delicious with a yummy mignonette and hot sauce. All of their drinks are wonderful and their bar area is so beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. Came here for my birthday dinner after having it on my "to try" list for quite sometime. We had an earlier meal since we were going to a show at Little Caesars Arena right after so we arrived right as they were opening. The hostess was very kind and directed us right to our table (we did have a reservation). First thing off the bat--the place is gorgeous. It was a bit smaller than I had envisioned it, but that just added to the charm. I told my husband that I'm pretty sure that dark teal color of the walls is the color I had been painting my office at that time and I'm honestly obsessed with it. They also have these gorgeous velvet booth seats a slightly lighter teal color and alongside the brown woodgrain of the molding, bar, decorative elements, it all came together perfectly. The meal was also no slouch either! We shared a few small plates to start, including the tartare, burrata, and frites. For my entree I selected the cassoulet special which was quite good as well. Over a decade ago I had cassoulet for the first time at a restaurant in NYC and it was SO good that I have been chasing that particular high ever since. I've ordered it many a place but Bar Pigalle, while not exactly the same as my memory would recall, it DOES get the closest. The steak tartare was also excellent, as were the frites (SO good), and the burrata? Oh man. Amazing. My husband ordered a seafood dish but honestly I was grooving so hard on my entree that I didn't try it and therefore cannot recall what it was. I do remember he said it was great, though. All the staff here were lovely. And by the time we finished and left the place was packed, so I highly recommend making reservations ahead of time. Can't wait to go back! read more

Had dinner at Bar Pigalle yesterday early evening. Highs Service was stellar. Our server was very welcoming and helped to set up our food order into courses that allowed us a very relaxing evening Cocktails were really good. I had a Last Word and it was very well done. The restaurant is decorated very nicely with warm wood trim. The bar area looked stellar and very French-bistro like. I will sit there next time No so Highs Food was good, but just OK. Between the two of us we had the beet salad, burger and steak tartare. Burger was good, but not the best smash burger that I've had. Beet salad was fine, however the cream cheese was a bit overpowering against the orange oil. It was dying for some citrus. Steak tartare was a bit dry, meaning that a small dab of olive oil would have added to the richness and overall mouth feel. I did not really taste the egg although I did see a dab of yolk on the tartare. Needed a bit of salt also to enhance the taste Menu was small, but it did cover a cross section of French bistro dishes. All in all, I thought it was a bit overpriced. So I will have to consider returning for a full meal. I would come back for a burger and beer at the bar. read more

Can you imagine organising for a very special birthday party with the family of 15 people including 2 who came all the way from Egypt and another family member who came from California? The organiser of this event contacted a number of well known Detroit establishments and selected Bar Pigalle after consulting the attendees. She contacted a person who answered the listed phone number, she communicated our parties desire and was told that they would gladly receive us on the set date at the desired time. We all show up to find the restaurant closed. What would you do? How can something like that occur? Some of us were speechless. My daughter the attorney who had taken it upon herself to make the arrangements was livid. We found a private room at the Whitney on short notice and saved the event. I've literally travelled all over the world and it's the first time something like this happens to me. Saying that I find the lack of professionalism an indication of the quality of the establishment is an understatement. Really beautiful, classy, upscale chic French "bar." I had the Steak Frites and my husband had the trout - both were excellent. I had mentioned in our reservation that my husband tries to avoid dairy and I am sensitive to gluten... and they thoughtfully prepared menus for us in advance. As in other French restaurants I have seen, the tables are much too close together. That is one thing I strongly dislike, but thankfully we were on an end and had nobody next to us until the last third of our meal. We started with the cocktails in our photos, which were very fun. Love this place. A part of me wants to keep it a secret! I've been here twice and both experiences were great. First time here we sat at the bar and ordered burgers, truffle fries and Brussels sprouts- all were delicious. Second time we came for the last reservation seating available for brunch. I ordered the Croque Madame and it was the best one I've ever had. (I've had it elsewhere since and it didn't even compare.) The only critique is the waiter was indirect about wanting us to leave. They break between brunch and dinner service, so we continued to sit there chatting while they set up for dinner. When we asked if they were closing, his frustration was palpable. It would have been a much better experience for all involved if they had let us know when we were seated the expectation of us being done and out of there by X time. read more
