Just received a custom holster for BHL. The leather is good. Unfortunately, that's all the positive feedback I have for this piece. It took about 45 days and an email conversation with the owner (who was professional and courteous) to arrive. It's big, bulky, doesn't hug the body, the belt loop isn't wide enough for the size of the holster, and it hardly fits the weapon/flashlight combo. Because of all these factors, it is almost impossible to quick-draw the weapon. I understand leather holsters need to be broken in, but I doubt I'll ever go through the trouble of wearing this one. It's simply not good enough for daily carry. read more

I've used Black Hills Leather on three occasions with good response and service. The first was an order for a custom concealed carry rig for my personal use. It was properly constructed, delivered on time and at a very fair price. But, the customer response that really earned my loyalty and appreciation was an order for two matching custom Cowboy Action Shooting rigs for my grandsons. Owner Rudy Lozano took the time to get the details right and delivered both rigs on short notice in time for birthday presentation and at a very competitive price. One of the rigs has since been passed down to my granddaughter who is still using it. Very well made! I recommended Rudy's work to my son who also ordered a set of cowboy shooting leather. Again, the workmanship was excellent, delivery was timely, and even my fastidiously exacting son was pleased with the result and the price. read more

I recently ordered a Texas Ranger Duty Rig from Rudy for my Dan Wesson 1911 Valor and I must say I was truly impressed. After reading several reviews, I had to make an account myself to share my experience. I would take all the bad reviews with a grain of salt because Rudy does fantastic work and I now have several friends who will be making orders through Black Hills Leather. My order was a big one including the belt, holster, handcuff case and magazine carrier so I did not expect to receive it anytime soon seeing how it was all hand carved with the floral design but Rudy never let me down and had the order shipped out within 6 weeks. Rudy always responded to my emails and was very helpful. I am very proud of the rig itself and was surprised to see the holster needed very little time to break right into my Valor. The rig itself Is really a masterpiece and I am looking forward to making more orders for several of my other handguns. read more

I ordered two holsters both belt slide on. One was a custom flowered design with logo (BH21 ) and and a dark brown basket weave ( BH49). It took a couple of emails to get the design done, but then my drawing skills are not great. Workmanship is great and both holsters are as perfect as I could hope for. Took longer then I thought but that was as much my fault in my not getting back to them as quickly as I could have. read more

I'm up grading my original review to reflect Mr. Lozanos integrity to fix the issues and to willing make amends for the hassle I had. If you can order a stock holster that he has pre made I am sure you shouldn't have problems or at a minimum visit the store with the exact specifications needed. He was willing to refund my money after the third issue and was willing to let me keep the final holster. I would not keep his work for free and I know the hide was expensive to acquire so we came to an amicable price for materials and we will part ways. read more

No I am not a friend of anybody at this company. I just think it is ridiculous that people post the low ratings that I am seeing for this company. ALL their holsters are hand made and therefore custom. I have just ordered a Kydex holster from a different company and their production period is no different to what I waited on my holster from Black Hills. Oh and by the way, it was well made and fitted perfectly first time out. Long story short, don't have unreasonable expectations and you will be VERY happy with their product and service. Their communications could be better which would most likely lead to better understanding and expectations. Rudy, you should tell people up front that they can expect a 6 week delivery. It's not unreasonable for your product. Also provide tracking on the shipment so that people aren't guessing when the product will deliver. read more

Rudy, please post a return label from the holster I allegedly shipped back...I will post a photo of that piece of crap you shipped me next to the gun I asked for. The photos clearly show the gun doesnt fit at all, it also shows your logo stamp on the leather and I will include a current newspaper under the holster to show you lie about getting a return.....I can also post the original request. I saved it all. Post something showing the refund, I will post the fact the card I used has been inactivated-you couldn't issue a refund even IF you were an honest businessman. I saw a a product I liked on-line through Pintrest. The link led me to the BHL website and I ordered the phone carrier in October of 2016. Today is January 11th, 2017 and it has not arrived yet. I have called too many times to hear Rudy tell me he was going to call me back but doesn't. I call back and learn they canceled my order for some reason and then realized their error. This goes on and on. Their customer service is surely a 1. Their product I have yet to see. For $111 for a phone case, I am hoping it is worth the rate. I have had the Pleasure Of Having Rudy Lozano, the Owner Of Black Hills Leather, And His Family And Crew in this Family owned and Run, Custom Specialty Gun Leather that runs the gambit from Old Wester/Cas/Sass Shooting Leather And Custom Duty Leather, which is how I met Mr Lozano and his Crew/Staff/Family. I drove home from going to the Police academy and had to supply my own side arm and all the Leather needed on the Duty Belt. I was Given Rudy's name and that of his Company in Laredo Texas and I was in Connecticut. Rudy spent several hours that Friday Night going over EVERY Detail with me, nothing was either to big or to small. I needed a Custom Holster for a S&W N frame 25-5 45 Long Colt with a 4 inch barrel. He also included wo double Splt Six Speed Loader Holsters, also known as over the belt. I received two belts, a Border belt for my Pants and then a Wider Border Belt for all of my Holster And Leather gears and with 4 Double Keepers, And 4 Extra Incase I misplaced any. Rudy and his team were True to their word, by the Next Friday a large box was waiting for me at The Station when I drove back from the Academy. Inside the box was not only Duty Belt and ALL the Accesories That I needed, But the Belt for my pants, Two Custom Made PlainClothes/ Off Duty Holsters in Natural Leather. I he ONLY thing missing in the Box was a Bill. I called Rudy, and he was as polite as I have ever been treated by any vendor, he just told me to try/Test All the Leather and Holsters And let him know how everything worked and Fit. I do not recall exactly when I finally recieved the Bill, which seemed to be pennies on the Dollar compared to machine mass produced fake leather goods. But I ordered my equipment in January, and I went through Winter,Spring,Summer,Fall And back to Winter and then,only after calling no stop I Received A bill for the Goods That were HandMade, Promised to me in a Week, And recieved Every Item, Hand Made,Fitting Myself And Sidearm And equipment perfectly. I have since ordered every piece of Leather,Duty and Concealed, not only for myself, but for my Wife Whom has carried since our Marriage, My Son And Many,Many other Family Members And Other "LEO's". I ordered a leather holster from my Browning 1911-380 on September 23rd of this year and Rudy stated no problem he could make it. When it arrived two months later it was not what I thought I was getting. The leather was hard, stiff and not at all comfortable to wear. I contacted Rudy and he stated that, "He wouldn't let me down". Well, after two more emails and each stated that the holster was in process, I finally emailed Rudy and asked if he had any intention of remaking the holster, if not, I will look elsewhere. I am going to return the first holster to Black Hills because it is unsatisfactory. Personally, I am sorry I ordered from Black Hills and I will not use them again and I caution others. I don't know about Y'all, I'm tickled with my BHL shoulder rig. I ordered a "Miami Vice" rig for my custom shop S&W M29 which has the narrow hammer. The first holster I got was for the wide hammer so the carry strap was loose. I called them, returned the holster and had the proper fit within a week. I love it, armpit artillery, I carry it on my dirt bike and 4 wheeler, stays where it is suppose to and gives me piece of mind. Sorry others have had problems with them but I'm getting ready to order the same rig for my P220 10mm. read more

I hate to do this as I always try and give people the benefit of the doubt, but if I can save one person the frustration and money of buying anything from black hills leather it's worth it. DON'T BUY FROM BLACK HILLS LEATHER. Let me tell you my story. I ordered 2 holsters back in Sept. 2017 one on the 16th and one on the 18th. I got the one I ordered on the 16th pretty quickly, about 4 weeks. Holster was OK. The other one though, that's a different story. I ordered a BHSSTB, after about 7 weeks I contacted Rudy to get an update on the status. He emailed back saying he'd check, a week goes by, nothing. I email him back and he sends me the tracking from the first holster I received already. I told him that was the wrong tacking number. Then for 3 weeks he tells me each week it will be done next week? Then finally on the 29th of November he tells me it's shipping today. A few days go by and no tracking so I email him and he tells me he sent it. I didn't get it I say. He says he'll send it again. a few days go by, nothing. Email him again and he says he's sent the tracking to me 3 times. I said no you didn't. Then on the 5th of December I get a tracking # that shows it was generated on and picked up in Laredo on December 4th, 6 days after he said he originally sent it to me, kind of odd that the tracking number was generated in the future! I finally got the holster a few days later and guess what? It wasn't made correctly! I could not attach the retention strap in either the hammer down position or cocked and locked. The strap was to short and at the wrong angle. And the opening was not cut correctly so every time the gun was holstered it would hit the mag release, releasing the magazine. I contacted Rudy and informed him of the problem complete with pictures showing what the problem was. It took him a week to finally get back to me. He said he would make another one and send it out. A couple of days latter he asked if I could send the one I received back to him and I said sure, email me a shipping label. I never got the shipping label. So I never sent it back. Why I should I pay return shipping on a product that wasn't made correctly. So about the middle of January I contacted him to see if he was working on it as on the 21st of December he said "I am making you a new holster, I will do my best to send it next week" Well that didn't happen. Finally the middle of February I get an email saying he has it done and he just needs to know how I carry? Cocked and locked or hammer down. I told him what I wanted and figured it would ship in few days. Oh how I figured wrong. I still don't have the holster (April 5th 2018) and Rudy will not answer my emails. He strung me along just long enough to pass the 120 days limit for disputes on paypal so now I have a holster that will only work if cut the retention straps and modify the opening so it doesn't release the magazine when the gun is holstered. His web site says 100% satisfaction guaranteed. Well Rudy, I AM NOT SATISFIED! In response to Rudy's comments: I don't even know where to begin. There is very little in his comment that is true. You see Rudy, I have all of the emails. You never responded that the leather needed to break in. This problem would not have been resolved with a "break in". Your exact reply on December 21st. 2 weeks after I first contacted you about the problem was; "Hi Richard Sorry, I was out of the office all last and part of this week, due to a severe cold I am making you a new holster, I will do my best to send it next week Thank You Rudy Lozano Black Hills Leather " Later that same day you asked, "Hi Richard can you please send me the holster back to show it to my guys and I iam already working in your new holster Thank You," I replied "Rudy, I will gladly send it back. Could you email me a return shipping label or maybe put it in the box with the new holster. I would be sending it back in the same box you sent it to me in so size and weight would all be the same." You said you would send a label on Tuesday. I never got that label. Which I communicated to you on the 16th of January. To which I never got a response from you, Until Feb 15th I received this email, "Hi Richard I tried to call you but the # in your order is no longer in service, I have the new holster ready to ship and I need to know if you carry your gun hammer down or cocked and locked Rudy Lozano Black Hills Leather " So how does any of this fit with what you said? If you have the new holster ready as you say you do. Ship It! But I don't believe you do or I would have by now.You never asked me to return the holster to make an adjustment, and I never said it was OK. You never sent a return label. If you did any of these, produce the email as proof. I can, can you? And don't make it sound like you gave me something something special with the 20% off. That was a promotion you were running for ANYONE dumb enough to order from you! read more

Yes, it took 3 months to get my holster, but it's all custom and they even got the magnet embedded between layers of leather perfectly placed so it automatically activates my laser upon drawing my handgun. The quality of the leather and craftsmanship are excellent and it fits my firearm and my body like a glove. I couldn't have gotten this made anywhere else and there are no off-the-rack leather shoulder holsters that work with my laser system. If you need custom work, this is the place to go - just know it takes time to do totally custom work! read more

Rudy Lozano is a Lowlife Scamming POS! Read the review I left on his Facebook page. I'm shocked that someone has not sued him yet. Type in reviews for Black Hills leather and you will see that I'm not the only one. The holsters I got from him look like old sandals! He didn't send the other mag holder I ordered, the dye job was horrible you can still see the brown leather, the edges are not straight, they were still sticky when I opened the box. They look like he took a piece of heavy leather and folded it in half and sewed it together. I could have made a better holster! Email me if you want more info and pics. read more

This is going to be a long review by my standards. BLH makes quality holsters, such quality, that a retailer by the name of Tom at Armory Express Outlet in Florida has built a business around selling these BLH holsters as his own. Tom has numerous videos about these holsters. And when you place an order with Tom, he leads you to believe that his staff making these holsters. I placed an order on 4/8/2014, and was told it would be 3 months. After 13 weeks I sent an email to Tom for the status of my order, no response. A week later, a second email was sent, and after several days, I get a call from Tom. The guys response is that he has too many orders and that he has hired additional staff to produce the holsters. I complained, Tom cancelled my order after 16 weeks. I think my credit card was refunded, but will need to check the statement once it comes in. Rudy at BHL is a straight shooter. I ordered the holster and received the holster as promised (it was one day late but that is the fault of usps). The holster is very nice and fits my pistol and me perfectly. The holster will become a daily use holster and allow me to carry with comfort. Getting ready to make another holster purchase from BHL and will provide another review. read more

My question is why do you post 4 bad reviews and hide 20 good reviews?? I have just placed an order with Rudy 2 days ago, and he was very polite and nice while placing my order. Even promised to try and get it out sooner than usual 5 weeks. But reading reviews on here would scare a person from this company! And that is not fair on your part! If I hadn't seen the "not recommended 23 reviews", I probably would have cancelled my order. This is very unfair to BHL! You are hurting someone's business! Why aren't these 20 good reviews recommended??? Maybe I'll get burnt, I guess only time will tell. But I tend to rather believe 20+ good over 4-5 bad. I have waited a good 4 to 5 months to write this review so I made sure I had used the product extensively before writing my review. This is my honest opinon. OK. I have read the bad reviews on here and I feel the need to write my experience with Rudy at Black Hills Leather. This is an honest review of my experience. I ordered a holster last summer in June of 2016 I was going out of town at the end of July and I asked if I would have my holster by then. Rudy the owner said I would. So I placed the order and the day he said I would have it it showed up. The quality and craftsmanship was great. Here is where my story gets interesting and to me tells me what kind of a guy Rudy is. So I had ordered a holster for a full sized 1911, and the one I ordered had the gun sitting up and down not horizontal like most shoulder holsters. This was my first shoulder holster and I figured it would be safer if the barrel was pointed down at the ground instead of facing behind me. So when I got it I tried it on and because the holster I ordered was up and down it just wasn't comfortable for me. I tried it for about a month and just didn't like it. So I called Black Hills Leather and talked to Rudy. I told him that everything was great craftsmanship wise but I just couldn't use it because of the one I chose. I was fully prepared and expecting to pay some type of fee or pay for a new holster. To my surprise Rudy told me he would make me another holster that was horizontal instead of vertical and that he would start on it right away and that I should ship back the one I had. So I shipped back the holster I had not the shoulder part just the holster part that holds the gun. I waited a few weeks and didn't get the replacement one so I called him and he said he shipped it. Which he did but it went to the wrong state. He felt really bad and made me a third one no charge and I finally had my holster a week or two later. When it arrived and I tried it on it was perfect. The leather was thick and had no problem holding the weight of a full size 1911 comfortably once I got it adjusted right. I have been wearing this thing now for 4 months or so almost everyday and it's a joy to wear. I'm not sure what some of the other bad reviews were expecting, one guy said he was made cause it took a couple weeks to get his holster but these are all hand made by order. Here is a few things to remember when ordering a hand made holster. First time should not be a concern, you are ordering a custom hand made item it can take a little bit, second if it's not to your liking or something is wrong with it that can happen with hand made custom stuff, if that happens what is important is how you handle yourself meaning be respectful while voicing your concerns and how the store handles the issue. I myself had an issue the holster I ordered wasn't really working for me. However Rudy did everything he could to make sure he got something that would work for me, honestly he went above and beyond my expectations and in the end I have a custom hand made leather shoulder holster that is beautiful and comfortable and functional. Some notes about Black Hills Leather. The only thing they could work on is communication. I did call once and the girl told me she would tell Rudy to call me back which I don't think he got the message so I ended up having to call back to get a hold of him, so be aware that you will have to call and if you don't talk to who your looking for probably call back again. Next thing to remember this is a small shop, when you call you can hear people working in the background, this isn't a huge company that makes all kinds of production stuff with an assembly line this is a small mom and pop shop who makes quality hand made stuff for a great price, so if having to call back a couple times to check on stuff is the worst of it so be it. I like the small feel of them and the person-ability. For instance through this whole thing Rudy remembered me every time I talked to him he knew exactly what my issues were and did everything he could to make sure I was happy. Bottom line this is a small custom leather shop, custom and hand made stuff take time. Treat people with respect and Black Hills Leather will treat you with respect and make sure you are happy. I would highly recommend this place to anyone and I will be buying more holsters from them in the future. read more

I have never left a review for anyone like this. Rudy in my opinion is one of the worst people in my life that I have done business with. Quoted one price over the phone and charged me another. Stated I should receive the phone case in about two weeks and would send me an invoice later that afternoon. I never received the invoice. Two weeks later I asked about the shipping of my phone case and if I could get an invoice sent. Never received invoice but was told phone case would ship next week. After another two weeks I asked about the shipping of the case and for a copy of my invoice, explaining to him that I did not understand why I was quoted one price and charged around $30.00 more. Again no invoice sent and his only reply was "OK Steve" I don't know what that means. A week later I asked him to refund my money and to cancel my order. After I was forced to contact my bank to file a dispute with them over this transaction I received an email stating that my phone had shipped. However, the phone did not actually ship until three days later. The phone case is two big for my phone even though I gave him the Make and Model Number not to mention the actual measurements of my phone. I will never do business with such an unprofessional person again!!! read more

I'm giving Rudy 2 stars because he does excellent work. However, I ordered 2 holsters and a spare mag holder on Feb 6th and didn't receive them until April 3rd. I realize the craftsmanship takes time because these are all custom made from scratch, but the holster I had made for my M&P compact was made incorrectly even after I gave him the name brand of the exact light that I have mounted on my firearm. I immediately sent him an e-mail informing him of the discrepancy. April 7th I got a response stating that he would make it over and do it ASAP. On May 11th I sent another e-mail asking if I was going to have to wait his typical 6 weeks which he responded the following day stating that he would "do better with me this time and let me know". Which I replied to and asked if he has even started making the new holster. I have not gotten a response as of the date of this review (June 16th). I think 4 months is long enough. read more

Avoid this place like the plague! Rudy is real quick to answer email until he has your money, then forget it. It will be days if they get back to you at all. I ordered a custom leather holster. Sent him 3 pictures and made the description as clear as day. They sent me an off the shelf holster that was nothing even close to what I asked for. Sent it back at my cost. He said he'd make the holster himself for me. I told him I needed it fast. Well 3 weeks later and a couple emails and still no response. All kinds of excuses and no communication skills to speak of. I'm not the only one to get this kind of service. Check the BBB website for more info on this so called business. If you like to take chances and buy from them, make sure you use Paypal or some other form of payment that will get your money back for you when it comes time. This place has absolutely zero concern for the customer once they have your money. They blatantly lie to your face about completion and delivery times. Seems they are running months behind and if you actually get what your ordered, go out and play the lottery because you will be extremely lucky. It appears that Rudy will tell you that he can make whatever it is you want exactly the way you want it, and then pick something off the shelf and send it to you hoping that you won't notice! I ordered a custom holster, sent pic's and made it as clear as possible. All I got was a pile of bullshit straight from the Mexican border. So this is how it went down. I'm searching for a gun belt for my newly purchased Sig 1911 TXG Texas edition. I like the Wild bunch custom rig on BLH website. I call on Sunday March 22 and talk to Rudy who happily takes my order. The last thing he says is he's running 5 weeks out. My card is charged on that Wednesday.... good to go. My first call to Rudy is at 7 weeks just to check in. He takes my info and says he'll "call me back that afternoon" with my order status, and never does. I wait 2 days and call back, again Rudy, who says "its gonna ship in the next few days". After about 10 days I call back, and he takes my info again, and says he will "get back to me that afternoon". Amazingly a female returns my call and says the package will ship at the end of the week. I receive the tracking email several days later, and the packages arrives at the end of the next week. Upon opening the package I am pleasantly surprised by the quality of the rig. It's exactly how I ordered it, and I honestly couldn't be happier with the product. As for the lack of communication and giving customers the run around I would give them 1 star. During the whole waiting game I took the time to research BHL (which i should've done first lol) and found nothing but negative reviews, which made me apprehensive about the quality of the product and if I was being scammed. I paid $300 for the gun belt and luckily I think it's worth every penny. In my situation the craftsmanship is second to none.. I would rate the belt itself 5 stars. It's really a shame these guys are killing their own business by the lack of customer service communication. I am ok if you tell me straight that you are running behind or whatever, but giving people the run around is never a good business practice.
