This might very well be the best shop in Maryland and one of the top on the east coast. Wish I was being bias but just go to their Instagram and check out their list of artists. Everyone here is as good as it gets. Both men and women artists here take their jobs seriously and kick every tattoo right in the ass. I don't think I'm 7 years of being tattoo'd that I've wanted to be in a shop so often. You're in an old Victorian style mansion with giant glass windows in the middle of downtown Frederick, Maryland, enjoying life and getting tattoo'd. 10/10 experience. I personally go to Matt Torres @tengutorres on Instagram. My opinion, which is why you're here anyways, is that Matt is the best Japanese artist in the DMV. Out of all the artists I've been too, he cares the most about his customers. If you don't want a big traditional Japanese tattoo, maybe stop reading and go to another very talented artist in the shop (literally anyone, even their apprentice kicks ass) but if you do want something like this, Matt is it man. You get a zoom meeting to plan, you work together, he plans it out, he shows up early every time, he's ready. He studies his work, he studies the Japanese tattooing style, he reads up. I had a perfectly fine time booking my appointment, put down my deposit, no problem! The day of, I was on time, and he was on time, but I got the feeling that he was not enthralled to be doing a tattoo, which really put a damper on my experience! The tattoo is a small script and a signature on my foot, which has a lot of meaning to me because my father just passed away. Black Label is one of the cleanest and well put together tattoo shops I have been in. Pricing was extremely reasonable for what I got. Scott was very straightforward and professional with everything on pricing, tattoo placement, my tattoo design and how long it will take to do. I sit back and read reviews and watch Instagram accounts for many shops & artists, and when I heard what these guys were doing for the anniversary, I kinda excited... In absolutely NO way am I saying this shop is not worth it or not clean or don't go, they have some pretty talented people there, by all means give them a shot, but This was my experience... I took off work early and traveled an hour to get to the shop... I stood out on the sidewalk for 5 hours to get tattooed at the shop, then they came out and went about halfway through the line and told everyone they couldn't be tattooed for their event, but next time anyone came up to let them know that we were here... It would have been one thing to come out about two hours after it started and said it was time to cut it back, at that point the line was just as long... but seriously 5 hours and nothing... I'm an avid collector of ink and I've been waiting to go to the shop... Just wanted to add some more to this since people at chiming my message box, this was my experience there and that's what happened, yes I did make it out there for some work and didn't get it, I went for one artist that came in from out of state and I also was planning on setting time up with possibly someone else there, and your right maybe I didn't set me alarm to get up early in the morning, sorry I was working early in the morning... I left work early to make it to this event.... Alls I'm saying is you guys know what you can handle work wise, and was surprised that for an event like this you could have just done little flash pieces not the the custom pieces that were posted on social media that day... read more

I have been wanting to get a simple circle tattoo for a while now and have even looked into doing so, but no place pulled me in like Black Label. I had seen they were going to open, watched them work on the building, and finally saw the open sign. What pulled me in was the fact that when I was driving down the street, an employees smiled and waved as I drove by. They have a good base rate and were apologetic that it was so high for what I wanted done, but I went in knowing there would be a base rate and it was frankly lower than I was expecting. This is an awesome shop. I've gotten two tattoos here, one very small and simple one behind my ear, and one that Scott (the owner) free-handed with marker straight onto my forearm (also my first color tattoo and the largest one I have). Scott's a beast, and he's a master of his style-- the American-style tattoo. He's also really serious about his work-- I bumped into him at a metal show in Silver Spring a few weeks after he did my forearm, and he immediately recognized me and asked to see my arm to see how it was healing. I didn't even recognize him until he asked to see the tattoo! (Sorry Scott, nothing personal, I'm just really bad with faces!) This is a guy who takes his trade very seriously and takes pride in his work-- the exact type of artist you want putting ink permanently into your skin. EDIT: Just got a couple piercings done by their piercer. He's a very experienced guy who acts very professional and makes sure your piercings are perfect! I called ahead for pricing and was told it would be $75, but when I got there, their piercer told me it would be $70 as a little Christmas customer-appreciation sale. A wonderful surprise, as apparently the normal, full price is actually $80! Due to the nature of my piercings, I can't post photos; but know that I will DEFINITELY be going to Black Label for all my future piercings (and I have quite a few already). read more

BLT couldn't have been a nicer experience for my first tattoo. They were so patient with a n00b like me and they answered all my questions. I appreciate that they took time to listen to my idea and then created something really great from it. Very impressed and would highly recommend them. They were also the only tattoo shop in town (I called four) that would get me in within a week, even though my tattoo was very small. I just thought I'd share my experience with those considering getting a tattoo from black label. When I first went in I had a specific idea for a tattoo on my finger, which I didn't think was a problem. When I went in to get it one of the artists explained to me that they didn't do any tattoos on the hands because they tend to fade and they didn't want a bad reputation- understandable. Then he proceeded to remind me how I was 18 and there was no way I would be happy with it in the future and how It would look so trashy and dirty. Not only is that unnecessary but also disrespectful. I don't need to be reminded of how old I am, my age should have no influence in the level of respect with which you treat me. I came back later having compromised and decided to get another design I had thought about getting. As for the actual tattoo, I'm very happy with it. The lines are clean and my actual artist was very polite. To be honest one of the main reasons I came back to that specific shop was to spite the artist who talked down to me for being young. All in all I think some of the employees just could've been a little nicer or more professional. As far as talent and cleanliness go black label exceeds the expectations, but I will not be going back. read more

I've gotten multiple tattoos from Scotty and I'm blown away every time I look at them. I get constant positive comments on his artwork. He always gives me what I want and more. It's a super nice location in Old Town Frederick. The place has an open environment, but its a very comfortable feeling shop. I've also had a piercing done there by Brandon and it looks great. I needed to get a tattoo of Pope Francis for an insane scavenger hunt and a friend recommended Black Label. I went in on 8/8/14 without an appointment and told them about this crazy tattoo idea! What I had in mind would have cost around $450 so Scott came up with a simpler idea for much cheaper and was able to take me immediately. I was impressed with his work & the cleanliness of the shop. The tattoo shops I've been to in the past have closed booths but Black Label is one big open space. I was a bit nervous about this but the friendliness of the staff put me at ease. Traveled here a couple of months ago with my girlfriend and our friend who has had most of his work done by the shop owner, Scott. The staff was great and greeted us as soon as we walked in the door to talk to us about the designs we would be getting (we did not have an appointment). After filling out a waiver and paying, it was only a short wait before my girlfriend received her tattoo, followed by me. Both of us had work done by Wes, who displayed precision on both of our pieces, as both of our tattoos involved a lot of line work. He also asked if I was okay multiple times during the procedure, showing that he cared about both me and his work. The shop itself was extremely clean, bright, and has an open floor that is really welcoming. I got my first (and probably only - I don't want too much ink on my body!) tattoo here this week, and I had a great experience at Black Label! I tried my chances at getting a walk-in appointment on a Monday evening, and after answering some questions about my design, I got an appointment that same evening. The gentlemen I worked with throughout the entire process were all friendly and warm towards their customers. They consulted with me about my design more than once, and even when I pointed out a part of the design I wanted changed, they did so graciously with no problems. During the actual tattooing, my artist Scott made sure I was comfortable and that I didn't need any breaks along the way. I felt like I received great customer service, and that the artwork I received, although simple, turned out beautifully! I was one of Scott's first clients when he opened his shop in Frederick, and I couldn't have asked for a more kind, knowledgeable, and talented artist - he and his staff are the BEST and will keep you laughing. :D As this was my first tattoo (prior to getting additional tattoos down the road by his shop), he put me at ease right from the start and explained the process step-by-step. I get complimented daily and wear sunscreen every day to preserve the color - You have to take care of your tattoos if you want them to remain vibrant. This was my first tattoo, and i am in my 50s. It was a 3 to 4 hour tattoo, in American Traditional, from a design my daughter (BFA Graphic Design) did for me. Scott graciously accepted her design, only tweaking as needed to make it tattoo-able. Scott will talk to you if you want, and he's a pretty interesting guy. I went here and looked at the artist's profile and felt really good about the place.. we had an initial conversation to talk about the design.. later, i made an appt. and when i got there was not greeted right away.. after 15 minutes the guy finally came out and was pleasant enough..then, when we sat down before beginning the tattoo, i reminded him what i wanted (which was what we had talked about initially).. and even after i had paid the $100 non-refundable deposit, he said he wouldn't have time to complete the design (a sparrow).. I told him i was moving and it was pretty important that he finish the whole design.. he said, "I'm sure they have sparrows [where I was moving]." k so at this point I'm getting half the tattoo i wanted, that is already partially paid for.. he draws the outline on my arm and was very short with me while i asked questions about the design..he started in and its nothing like the picture i brought, but its too late to change the flow of the design.. i wanted to incorporate more color, but he informed me it wasn't possible.. when he was finished, the tattoo did not look like the initial design we had agreed upon and looked incomplete and terrible.. he made me feel so unimportant, and unwanted as a client. i left in a panic and called an artist i had worked with before..she works at time bomb and is amazing..she invited me to come in and sat with me incorporating my ideas and adding some of her own in order to fix the terrible work he had done..she sat with me for four hours and now i couldn't be happier.. I would not recommend Black Label Tattoo to anyone. read more

I know everyone says this but I truly never do reviews. Just really felt that I had to share this. After showing a picture of the tattoo i wanted, the artist gave me a quote of $125 with a $50 deposit. He gave me an appointment card marked with date, time and amount left to pay along with Instructions for me to email him a copy which I did. Because the shop was empty I asked if it could be done at that moment and he simply shook his head "No" I thanked him and went on about my day. On the appointment day I walked in the shop and announced my appointment time. The same artist proceeds to tell me that I did but for the previous Thursday. At this point I had a horrible feeling because I knew he was lying and looking at his face I could tell he had rehearsed how to go about this lie. He proceeds to tell me that normally I would have lost my deposit but that he will work with me and schedule me for another day. I told him there was obviously a misunderstanding because I had my card and proof of the email I sent him. I never would have scheduled that Thursday since I had to work a 12 Hour shift that day. He very arrogantly precedes to tell me that he "makes no mistakes". At this point I'm mad and absolutely DO NOT want their business. I tell him he has in fact made a mistake and to just refund me my deposit. (Mind you throughout this whole exchange he never took his eyes off his cellphone) He stepped away and after about 5 minutes returned with a $50 bill. He never made eye contact or apologized. He simply placed the bill down and proceeded to attend the next customers who I had aparantly been "bumped" for most likely because her tattoo required extensive and probably more expensive work. read more

Got my conch pierced here 9 months ago and it never healed properly despite my careful cleaning and maintenance. I went to a tattoo/piercing shop here in ATX for help. The guy there said the piercer had done a poor job piercing my conch. It was crooked and that was why it was taking so long to heal. I have a permanent keloid around the piercing site and am very disappointed. I've had my cartilage pierced twice before and have never developed a keloid in those areas and they have healed quickly. I do NOT recommend this place for piercings. read more

I just got my first tattoo here, and could not have had a better experience. I had no trouble getting an appointment. The shop is extremely clean and professional-looking (I must have been disinfected at least five times), and everyone I talked to was friendly, helpful, and patient without being condescending. They were also very thorough in explaining the aftercare: I was sent home with a detailed list of instructions, which has been very helpful. I went with a friend of mine awhile ago as she got some work done at Black Label. I was impressed with how clean the shop was, and how professional the guys that work there were. I went on 10/6/15 to Black Label to get my first ever tattoo. Scott did mine and I could not have been happier. First off he took my drawing it did made it look exactly like the drawing I had done. I had absolutely no scabbing, just maybe a day or two of some skin peeling. But that only lasted two days at most, and other than that it has healed completely and it looks great! I would recommend to anyone to go to Black Label. You will be treated great and you will be very happy with the work they do. The price for what I got done was what I expected it to be around.
