Black Lotus has been my go-to shop for several years now. I have never had such a good experience at a tattoo shop or met such talented artists and it's kept me coming back again and again. My first tattoo here was my fleabag tattoo (pictured - my left inner forearm) and I worked with David. He was so nice and talented, he did amazing. I gave him a hodgepodge of ideas to work from and told him the things I *had* to have in the piece - he incorporated everything j wanted and fleshed out the design in such a way I never even imagined. I'm so in love with it to this day (I got it a few years ago). My next tattoo was also with David - I got my ghostie in a field (also pictured). This was a scar coverup. This one I kinda let David do whatever he came up with. He gave me some options on the vibe I wanted and once he had a general idea, he came up with something *amazing*. Seriously, I get so many compliments on this. After my ghostie, David left the shop (and moved very far from me lol) so I decided to work with a different artist - Jarom. This was a total like, kismet situation. I walked into the shop after knowing David left, and asked who would be best to do some lettering on my wrists (pictured) and Jarom was suggested. He was super super nice. Such a stellar vibe. He made sure the font was what I wanted (and double checked the spelling lol) and I got in with him THAT DAY. Like... Within 30 minutes of walking in, I was sat in his chair. That day, I put another deposit down with him for another piece coming up lol My most recent piece here was with Aarin. He did my heart and dagger (pictured). This was another kismet thing. I walked in to go over ideas with Jarom for my next piece and saw this design on the flash design wall. I immediately fell in love. So I asked if I could get that done and when. Aarin came out and we talked for a minute, and again within about 30 minutes I was getting this done. Aarin was a gem to work with. I seriously recommend coming here and getting work done. Each artist has an Instagram and if you find someone you dig, 9 times out of 10 they'll take time out of their day to meet with you. read more

I found David on instagram after getting a really bad tattoo in Mexico recently. I liked his work on his instagram & when I reached out to ask if he could coverup the ugliness on my thigh he responded right away. I sent some ideas of what I was trying to get to cover it but I was open to letting him design it. I stopped into the shop one day so he could see it in person and he said he could cover it and I booked my appointment (there's a $100 appt deposit, it's applied to the price of the tattoo). He did a phenomenal job, explained the process and got to work, he gave me a couple of breaks and he knocked it out in 2-1/2hours. It turned out soo good! It's beautiful! I love it!! Let's start this off by saying I have a disease called "EDS" or ehlers danlos syndrome. To make a long story short. My body doesn't produce collagen. Collagen is the glue that holds everything in your body together on a cellular level. With that being said it leaves me with supper stretchy "cigarette paper" skin that is very difficult to work with. My whole life doctors have told me I would never be able to be tattooed due to my stretchy skin. They said it would bleed like a marker on a paper towel.. all the lines would blow out and etc.. Well after my 1st BAD tattoo experience (not done here) they were right I went to a less experienced cheaper place and he took a crap on my hand. Blown lines, bad simple errors.. the whole 9. But I knew I wanted to eventually be covered in tattoos and by the look of my bad tattoo it funny enough didn't seem like my skin was the issue but more of a experience problem with the newer artist not knowing how to work with it. Well As my balls grew bigger trying to figure out how the hell I was going to get blasted from head to toe I was introduced to Tyler at the barbershop I work at. I instantly started stocking his Instagram (@tyler480) and quickly learned his line work is absolutely INSANE!!! Saturation the best I've ever seen!! Exactly what me and my 80 year old feeling skin were looking for. After booking the 1st appointment I was nothing less than impressed. From the consultation to making sure you are comfortable before going back for the session BLACK LOTUS is the place to be. TYLER is my dude! His attention to detail and overall care for his work speaks for itself when you are in there. This man is an absolute laser with a tattoo machine. All tattoos hurt so it's nice when the artist is concerned about your comfort, they do have numbing creams and stuff you can use if your a sissy and no they won't make fun of you but I might . When you're sitting for a couple hours the LITTLE THINGS DO MATTER and Tyler is amazing. I traveled from Indianapolis to Black Lotus Tattooers in Gilbert to get a butterfly/moth hybrid tattoo from Trevor Perrine, and it was well worth the trip. I had been following Trevor's work on Instagram, and for an apprentice, his designs really stood out. He did not disappoint! The tattoo, located on my inner arm, was done with a light touch in what can be a difficult area, which made the experience more comfortable. Trevor kept the conversation pleasant, helping to ease any discomfort, and even offered a break during the session to help me relax. The session took only a couple of hours, and I was really happy with how it turned out. The shop itself was clean, and everyone I encountered was friendly. For the size and complexity of the design, the price was reasonable. The music, while a little unbearable at times, had its moments--some songs actually made me want to dance! I cannot say enough great things about Black Lotus Tattooers and Trevor in particular. My husband and I went as a walk in, each getting our first tattoos. I was a bit nervous but walking in, my nerves were instantly calmed. We were welcomed by a warm woman at the front desk and the facility was very very clean. They were able to get us in the same day. We then met with Trevor and instantly felt very comfortable. As first timers, we needed some guidance and he was very patient helping us picking a design. He was very upfront on about how our ideas would look and would age. His designs were even better than what we both imagined. Trevor is definitely a perfectionist when it came to design and placement, which is absolutely appreciated. He was great about walking us through the process so we knew what to expect. This is a really great shop. I've had 4 tattoos done here now all lasting 3+ hours and I genuinely enjoy my time here. The atmosphere is fun, the shop is well-styled, and everything is very clean and professional. Plus my favorite bonus - they have those lifesaver hard mints all over the shop! Huge shoutout to Trevor, who has done all my work he is such a talented young artist who I will certainly be going back to many times. A couple of caveats to ensure you have a successful time here: - This is a tattoo shop, there may be words or jokes that offend you but hey, it's not a library and they can choose the culture of their shop. Plenty of others out there if this isn't for you. - While walk-ins are welcome you will probably have a much better time if you spend some time on their IG, browse their artists to find one you like, and set up an appointment to go by and chat with them about your project. You can do a vibe check and see if the gut feel is that this is the right artist and everything will work out. I understand bad artists and bad experiences objectively exist, but I think many - in the case of a tattoo shop - can be avoided if you do your due diligence and feel it out before just randomly selecting a shop. My son and I were in New Orleans and got matching tattoos....mine was a blowout... basically the tattoo artist in New Orleans went to deep they did however offer to do a cover up...But 7 years ago I went to BLACK LOTUS and had the owner Byron do my tattoos that were amazing. Today, I phoned and talked to Trevor and he made me feel so comfortable that we took the 45 drive to get some thoughts on what to do. He took time to talk with me and suggested I speak with John.... First let me tell you he's booked out till 2025 And he was kind enough to look at my tattoo and tell me what he would suggest. It takes a lot to impress me and I was blown away by not only his work but the genuine kindness of this talented artist. Omg what an absolute sweetheart...at 63, my skin doesn't have as much collagen as it did when I was younger, but he knew right away what the issue was and knows what needs to be done to make the tattoo look and appear clearer. It is very RARE for me to say do what you think..and I have absolutely NO qualms about saying that to John! Got a tattoo from Jordan about a year ago. He was a short and quite rude but said he was new to the shop so figured it was a one time thing. Been back in 2 more times for 2 other tattoos, asking for him. Insane asshole each time. Demeaning and snide. Did not get the ink done either time due to his harsh attitude and rudeness. Love the ink I got from him the one time but not worth being treated like shit. Plenty of good artists in the area that don't treat people like they are stupid for what they want. I've been to 2 sessions for my 5 session sleeve, so far, somewhere else. Won't be back to give them my money or tell people where I got the original tattoo. In these uncertain times, and I don't just mean COVID, I mean trying to find a new tattoo parlor that actually cares, does good work, and has a relaxing atmosphere, thank goodness for Black Lotus Tattooers. I had an appointment during the week and Tyler, my artist, fell ill and needed to reschedule. I thought to myself "self (and I know it was me talking because I was wearing my underwear), here we go again, another lost deposit." But to my surprise, Tyler was on the mend and just taking precautions (because, you know, in these uncertain times). He rescheduled me for later in the week, showed up on time, made the whole experience fun, like it's supposed to be, and gave me exactly what I wanted for a great price (compared to other parlors I prices). So this was a "vibe" problem. Went in as a walk in with my niece. we each wanted a very small tribute tattoo in plain black. I was thrilled that the incredibly bored young lady at the reception desk said someone could see us. Since there were about 7 guys walking around the shop BSing walking to the parking lot etc and knowing our tattoos were small we figured we be in and out in no time but the receptionist said our artist had not arrived yet (as walk ins on a Tuesday we got there at opening at 11am). We wait. the only customers in the place. ignored completely. Our guy arrives. We wait. Finally he comes to ask for our designs. We wait. Half hr later, he comes back to tell us he can't make the two tiny initials my niece wanted that small and my 5 Morse code were also too small. OK. we agree to the larger tattoos. He says he has to make the stencils and set up. We wait. Others start arriving. Some walk right thru to the back. Now there are about 10 people back there. You can hear them BSing over the loud rap. I go back first. There is a glass window where I can see a bunch of guys sitting around talking and vaping. My tat takes 8 minutes tops. He says he has to reprep his room for my niece. we sit down and wait. meanwhile we can see him down the hall BSing with the guys in the back room. We go for my nieces and hers take less than 5 minutes. Total tattoo time....less than 15 mins. Time in Shop...1 1/2 hour. Total cost...$200. And yes, I did tip cause I'm not a douche. I get it. I'm just a Gilbert soccer mom. Maybe I don't "get" tattoo culture. But as a paying customer I would think I should have been shown a bit more curtesy. My 2 friends and I chose the shop because we wanted to get lotus tattoos, that simple! And the reviews were good. We had a great experience and are thrilled with the pieces we each got. We booked an appointment for three ppl about four weeks in advance with Andrew. Jerom at the front desk was great. We emailed our reference a few days before, and he had it drawn up when we got there. Andrew's style is unusual but awesome-- thick outlines with line-work for contours rather than gray shading, reminiscent of R. Crumb. I totally dig it, but my friends had other ideas in mind, which he happily provided them. We all wanted the same drawing (outline), but mine was all black--the same size & exactly how he drew it w his line-work contours (inner upper forearm), one wanted color (back of shoulder), and one wanted hers shrunk down & simplified to just an outline (back of ankle). They all turned out perfect. He was patient, friendly, and professionally accommodated the needs of three opinionated yoga teachers. He was also a good conversationalist. Thanks Andrew & Jerom! got great reviews bout this place online & just moved to az. called to see bout a simple two word finger piece (i have 5 tattoos already, including a large spine & rib piece) and receptionist said they "may not be able to do it bc i dont already have any exposed pieces?" i understand being cautionary w hard-to-hide pieces on newly tatted people but it seemed kinda weird they were so pressed bout me getting a small finger piece when i already have five others. receptionist then said "we'll have to see if we can after you come in for consulation" over phone & wouldnt schedule an appointment w the arist i wanted/ had friends go to (brian). i would've appreciated more open conversation bout the piece i was interested in instead of assuming im inexperienced & am unsure of what i want on my own body. also seemed strange they werent sure they could do a simple, two word finger piece before me walking in (the piece i wanted was very simple w font already picked out.) however, the receptionist 's vibe convinced me to call other shops (shoutout dame of the west tattoo!) in search of more receptive, less restrictive shops, so thankful for that :) im sure the artists are dope, just wish the shop wasn't so judging/trying to make me question what i want on my own body while just trying to schedule an appointment for a simple small finger piece. read more

This shop used to be a good place to get tattooed however over the years it has become a snobbish tattoo shop that treats people who walk in like they don't matter. They won't even let you talk to any of the artists without booking an appointment which is a hundred dollar deposit then on top of that the deposit can't be used with anyone else it can only be used with that specific artist "scam" the artists are never in the shop but it doesn't matter anyway cause you can't see them even if they were there to have a five minute conversation on tattoo ideas. The people who work the front are rude and judgmental and won't take the time of day to talk with you if they don't like your tattoo ideas. I had come in with two different ideas for tattoos and they completely blew me off so I ended up going to next wave tattoo and got two amazing tattoos and ended up spending about $2500 on some really good pieces this shop literally threw away money cause they wouldn't take the time to listen to me then let me talk to an artist. This shop also will not take small walk-ins something to keep in mind. I would not recommend this shop due to a snobbish culture and the assholes who work the front. read more

24 hours in the chair and my hubby is thrilled with his back piece by Byron. We went to the AZ Tattoo Fest this past weekend. Byron tattooed the guy who won 1st place for best sleeve. There were about 40 contestants and they judged arms and legs together! Byron's customer was an arm. That says a lot! It's a beautiful tribute to my deceased grandparents whom I was very close to. Having a visible reminder of them with me forever means a lot. The shop is clean, comfortable, and modern. Best experience I've had with a tattooer. It's always a bit intimidating going in for a tattoo into a shop that you are not familiar with. I often ask myself... "I am going to get made fun of because I'm a bit of a corporate man and I don't fit into the tattoo culture as much some other patrons of this establishment?" There's also the fear of walking into a tattoo shop and hearing loud death metal playing throughout the shop and feeling a sense of intimidation if the art you want on your body permanently isn't something the artist is willing to have the patience to answer any questions you may be having. I can whole heartedly say that I felt relief and calmness wash over me the moment I stepped into Black Lotus Tattooers. Katelyn greeted me at the desk and went over costs as well as deposits for appointments and my Tattooer Jarom treated me kindly and professionally going over the process and what to expect in terms of time frame, as well as tattoo aftercare. It was a wonderful experience and I would highly recommend Black Lotus Tattooers in Gilbert to anyone looking to get some work done or just have a conversation about some reservations you may be having in regards to having a tattoo. Everyone treated me kindly with respect and patience and I was able to get a tattoo in time for Christmas that my daughter was extremely excited to see. (Since she was the inspiration behind it.) My first appointment was with Aaron a little over a year ago. The dude is so chill and really cares about his art. I chose a piece of his off the 200 dollar one shot wall. A spooky clown chick that had been up there for a year or 2 with no takers. I love spooky and colorful tattoos and Aaron really wanted to knock it out of the park. It was a little more expensive than 200 dollars, but you pay for quality when getting a tattoo. I have returned to him for 2 more tattoos since then. Slowly but surely working towards a full leg of his work. Dude is lit. I also had the pleasure of getting some traditional pieces done by the incomparable Tyler. His workshop is right behind the front desk and he will most likely be the first person to greet you as you walk in. Tyler is soooo welcoming.. literally. If you have had a negative experience with him or any of the other gents at this store, chances are the problem is you. I have had 2 pieces done by Tyler and they are so colorful and vibrant.
