Been here now twice and both cuts have been stellar - can't wait for the next one. It's been a struggle to find barbers in the neighborhood that you can book ahead of time. Most businesses got rid of that feature and I don't ever have enough time to just walk in and wait for a place. I've gotten my cut from AJ and Noah, and both do an excellent job of fading, shaping up the neck and ears, and great conversationalists. It's a great old school vibe with older barber chairs. It is not the least expensive haircut I've ever gotten, but tips go directly to the barbers, which I appreciate, and the consistency is exactly what I look for with a cut. Most recent visit I had my hair done for headshots, and Noah crushed my look exactly and even showed me how to style my hair for the shoot. Black Rabbit is my go-to barbershop and has been for about 3 years now. Started going pre-pandemic before they changed locations and picked back up once barbershops were open. Had a few different barbers when I started going but usually go to Michael now; either way I've never had a bad cut! Michael does a particularly good job with my hair so I've been going back to him when possible. If there's ever a cancellation or if I try to make an appointment on short notice and go with another barber I still leave happy! Haircuts are getting a little expensive but hey they are everywhere and they do a great job. Not to mention you can grab a beer while you wait and maybe pet a pup if one of the barbers brought theirs in. Another important thing for me as a member of the lgbtq+ community is that I feel safe and comfortable in my barbershop. I've been to some others where the barbers are blatant and proud of their sexism, homophobia, transphobia etc. (and unfortunately I'd say that's the standard for lots of barbershops in NYC). I usually go for $25 haircuts but I was feeling adventurous and decided to try this place out. I was taken care by Brett and my experience was a little underwhelming. The haircut was not bad, but also not quite what I had asked for and I was probably in the chair for 15 minutes. I'm working my way from a neat haircut with a fade to a messy mohawk, and he made suggestions and gave me options, and a haircut that looks great for the transitions. They have graphic novels, art books and Sixpoint available while you wait. I got a cut from Lu and its one of the better haircuts I've had in a loooong time. So my regular barber officially left town and I decided to hit up this place again. I initially came here in 2017 and got a cut by Lou but he doesn't work here anymore. So I opted for the owner, Matt. I am SO glad I had the opportunity to get a cut from him. He was very welcoming and attentive to what I was asking for. Matthew is worth traveling for! He was worth going to midtown when he was at Olde Tyme Barbers, and he's worth going out to this random block in Bushwick now that he has his own beautiful shop. Matthew is friendly, careful, and skilled - my favorite part is how at the end of each haircut he puts both hands on your shoulders and goes "is there anything else I can do for you today, Anna?" The price ($30) is right for a high-quality haircut, too. But the thing that has always made Matthew truly standout is that he is a queer-friendly, trans-friendly, feminist dude, and has always made me feel totally welcome as a woman in a manly man's barber shop. He even asked me once what my preferred gender pronouns were, to make sure he was getting it right. The other guys in the shop seemed really nice too, and were giving some awesome haircuts. I'd been working from home for about two months when I walked in. I was looking so gnarly (think John the Baptist meets Charles Manson) that the resident dog bum-rushed me right at the door and started barking. Matt kindly called him (her?) off and hooked me up with the next available appointment. I cooled my heels at the bar down the street until it was time. I got Louis, a stylish dude with a quick wit and a good sense of humor. I'm terrible at describing haircuts ("I don't know, short on the sides and long on top?") but he asked me a few questions and made some suggestions indicating that he knew what I was going for and what would work best for my head. Not only was Lou great with the psychological aspects of cutting my hair and beard, he also has skill with both clippers and scissors. The finished product was better than I deserved. I'll be back, and Lou is my man. I think I was most impressed with the overall vibe of the place. Considering the quality this place cranks out, the people who work there chose to be friendly and jovial rather than pretentious. It's a welcoming atmosphere to the point where a few customers hung out after their cuts just 'cause, and they were welcome. read more

I haven't had so much as a trim in the better part of a year, and it's been at least two since I've had a cut-proper. I'm irrational to begin with, and the longer I put things off, the harder it is to pull the trigger. Today at 12:30, my anger came to a head, and I booked an appointment with Matt for 1:00 PM, and plugged my email and number in to their system--if I was going to bail, I was going to have to face the potential wrath of a booked barber tracking me down. I did some breathing exercises on a park bench for a few minutes...read some Karl Ove Knaussgard and restored my faith that I wasn't the *most* self-conscious person in the world...and then headed to the shop. Walked in. Prepared for frightened looks at my ridiculously long and unruly mop. Matt greeted me with a wave and a smile. "Sup dude. Be with you in just a couple minutes." Sat down and breathed. They were tinkering with the payment system. Two more customers came in. Had they overbooked at my time slot? Oh yes, please, this was my out. "I'll just come back," I thought about saying. "Come on over, Chad." Fuck. "What are we doing today?" He saw I was sweating bullets. I told him just a trim, hope that's OK, want to keep it over my big forehead, etc. "Great," he said. "Now, I just wanna warn you, if you want more of a long hair style, you'd be better suited at a salon. I'm a pro at short." A kind caveat, much appreciated--all the better reason to just go with the intended trim, I thought. And so Matt got to work, cutting from left to right, and twisting finished sections up into little ringlets as he went. When it was all said and done, he'd only taken about an inch off...and it looked--it looks--fantastic. I feel so much better. $36 with a tip (is $6 a reasonable tip? I'll check before I go next time) and I feel like a subtly new man. I joked that I might come back in every couple weeks and have Matt take it down an inch at a time. "You'll be looking like a businessman when I'm done with you," he said. In all honesty, I'm going to stay long for as long as my hair and occupation will allow me, but I'm trusting my trims exclusively to Matt. Black Rabbit Barber is your best bet for a great haircut in Brooklyn. The tale of this shop starts long ago when I met the owner Matthew at another classic barber shop. Through the years I've followed this guy to other shops not because I'm lazy, but because he does a damn good job, is personable and actually cares about what his client looks like walking out the door. Now, with his own shop which he built, his style influence and his f*@cking life on the line, I couldn't be happier. Black Rabbit Barber is perfectly located right off the (L) train's Morgan or Jefferson stops. The place not pretentious like other barber shops. Been here about 4 times getting a cut by Matt. It's my first time in my life getting my hair longer than a number 5 on clippers, or a high skin fade, so I chose to find a reputable barber. Took a chance on Matt since my hair was getting weird growing out, but he gave me great tips on how to style and how to grow it out. He's a really friendly guy who takes time on your hair, just don't be late more than 5 minutes or you'll lose your appointment. Atmosphere is great and very chill and I love his dog. Stunning. Just had the most sublimely degrading customer service experience of my life. I'm a kind, innocuous guy who goes in a for a standard men's haircut. In this setting, I expect nothing other than: 1.the haircut, and 2. to not be verbally abused and degraded by the barber. When it comes to MIKE, boy were these standards too high. He proceeded to variously ignore and insult me for 30 minutes. Appointment starts 15 minutes late - no acknowledgement. I ask "how are you?", completely ignores me and stares at his phone. I ask for a "regular men's haircut," i.e. the standard short on sides, slightly longer on top that is universal basic barber knowledge, and acts like I just made the most ridiculous and incomprehensible request imaginable - after much guffawing and condescension ("sounds like you're a little confused about what you want") the muppet finally catches on, "OH so you want a REGULAR haircut??" Throughout the haircut me manhandles my head, seemingly intentionally rough, while chatting (indifferent to my existence) about MOTORCYCLES with another customer. Truly, in content and form, Mike is a surly teenager. Oh and let's not forget his pointing out various natural features of my hair - my cowlicks and widow's peak - to explain they are undesireable and unfortunate looking. I dunno what just happened to me in there, but paying money for it left me feeling downright nauseous. It's easy enough to just be quiet and decent in dealing with customers if you're in a bad mood or just an intrinsically awful person (bingo!), but this level of outright contempt and disrespect towards someone paying for your service is incomprehensible. read more

I did not even have to open my mouth as Sensing my presence, the barber knew what i wanted and went to work, just after deadlifting a Volkswagen. As he took the scissors in his hand, it's like the scissors moved by themselves.
