Wow, what an authentic, real life experience of journeying into the wilderness -and my first time…read moreriding a mule! Sally was a wonderful animal and as surefooted as they say! I felt so able to be present and witness the shifting light of the day and the rare and beautiful wildflowers (a favorite of mine) in the Gila Wilderness from the back of my steady steed. I slept so well after the long day rides and woke refreshed and ready to go again at dawn. As a person used to boring backpacking food that I have to carry myself, I was delighted to have real milk in my coffee and butter on my toast. What a treat! I enjoyed how the plans of the trip evolved and changed based on he knowledge the crew had of the area and the weather- this was a living, changing real life journey, not some dude ranch style packaged and predictable experience designed for your typical US traveler who wants a pre-determined concept of comfort and certainty that checks all the usual comfort based boxes. Those places exist and would probably be fun too, (I love spas!) but this was a real adventure! The horses were all so well cared for that some could even be released to wander around the camp area- this was astonishing to me and really spoke to the leader Jim's connection and care of his animals. I learned so much from Jim, who must have grown tired of all my questions about how he managed and got to know such a large heard of individual personalities. I will certainly be back when I am able to explore more of the area! What a treat!

Stellar horses and mules (I loved that little miss Bombs Away). Friendly and knowledgeable guides Bridget., the cook and a guide as well, was super nice and full of interesting stories. She brought her fiddle so we had live music too! Great swimming holes and campfires every night. Can't recommend enough....

Having hardly any experience riding, it didn't stop us what so ever. Tim had so much patience with us as he taught us how to ride western style. The memories will last a lifetime. Words can not describe how much we enjoyed our stay, from the Elk first thing in the morning, to the fantastic sunset in the evening and everything inbetween, we were just in total amazement throughout. Although the pictures are phenomenal, they really don't do this place justice, it's beautiful. I would absolutely have no problem recommending this ranch to anyone, whatever your riding skills are, I can't wait to return. Maybe with a little more riding experience on my next visit, I loved riding so much I'm looking at taking it up back home. Thank you both so much for an amazing experience, you are lovely, wonderful people. God bless you.

Western riding is usually a fundamental part of this experience. Our riding program goes beyond the typical guest ranch ride. Here, we don't follow set trails; instead, you might find yourself working cattle or navigating the open range. Authentic Riding Style: We teach "Western Reinsman" or "Ranch Riding", inspired by the Spanish Vaqueros who taught American cowboys how to work cattle. This involves guiding with your legs and seat, preparing you to keep your hands available for real ranch tasks. Horse Training for Real Work: This isn't just riding; it's an education in horsemanship. We're not just providing an experience; we're giving you skills that will last a lifetime. Our horses are trained for cattle work, requiring you to develop leadership, trust, and consistent communication skills with your horse. Fantastic country, comfortable lodging, and meals which have received raves from our guests.

I've been coming to ARA for over a decade now. This last weekend would've been my fourth visit. I…read morestumbled upon them while taking a class at New Mexico Tech and loved it so much that I have since brought back my husband, a friend, and recently my daughter. Dacodah, Jill, and the whole crew at ARA make you feel at home. Like you're family. The horses are top-notch and amazingly surefooted and confident, even when the rider is not. The staff are wonderfully kind and knowledgeable and patiently teach everything from horsemanship to knot tying. This is far from a boring nose to tail trail ride. As experienced riders it can be challenging to find a place that allows you to go faster than a walk. This past weekend we probably went the fastest we ever have gone on horses... Full gallop on Arabians is amazing! Over the course of three days we did five separate rides! Beyond the flat out gallops we also had lots of challenging canters on varied terrain, splashed in the river, night rides, plus technical climbs and descents in the canyon and were rewarded with beautiful vistas. They truly have something for everyone...from someone who has never been on a horse before to the experienced rider. You will have the time of your life at ARA. We flew all the way out from Florida just to come ride here for the weekend. Another amazing experience. Thank you Jill and Dacodah!

I'm out over $500 for a nightmare ride and potentially exposed to hantavirus. There are other reviews that touch on the ego and abrasive behavior.
