Cat adoption fees are waived for the month of August in an effort to "clear the shelters". Upon walking inside this facility, you will be asked to sign in and someone will direct you. This is very different from other shelters. I appreciate their level of security and organization, but also their level of customer service. First, I had to check out the nursery. There were so many kittens in their nursery. Tons of kittens of all shapes, sizes, and colors. Each kitten had it's own "spot". Some were sleeping on the giant cat tower, others were curled up in soft cat beds and rugs, a few were playing with toys, and one was sitting inside of a box, peaking out. Too cute! I was able to interact with each kitten and play with each of them as long as I liked. Make sure you also give some love to the mature felines in their play room. It's a bit hidden in a room down the hall. I was surprised that it wasn't full of cats. Only a few cats when I was there. You can also adopt dogs, although I didn't get a chance to see them. When you finally decide on your fur-ever friend(s) you can just pick out it's information card and take it to the front desk. All cats are microchipped so if there is any confusion, they will make sure you selected the right one. The adoption process was rather smooth. I had to present my ID and fill out a short, two-page application. They recommend bringing a pet carrier. You will receive a free bag of food, as a "thank you" for adopting. I believe in supporting your local humane societies and shelters. Without donations, these places would not survive. I am lucky that my adoption fee was waived, but I realize the costs associated with spaying, vaccinating, and all the other daily costs of sheltering my kitten. Blatant Profiling Around Affordability We came in for an emergency evaluation after my dog was injured. We called ahead, explained the situation, requested X-rays, and asked for an estimate. When the doctor got to discussing treatment options, he did not simply lay them out and let us decide. Instead, unprompted, he repeatedly said "if you can't afford it... if you can't afford it... if you can't afford it," even though we never indicated cost was a concern. NOTE: I WAS ON THE PHONE AT THE TIME AND HEARD THESE COMMENTS DIRECTLY. We had already made clear we wanted repair over amputation if possible, yet the comments persisted. A provider who assumes a client can't afford care, and says so repeatedly and unprompted, is making a judgment call he would not make about every client. This was flat-out profiling, and no pet owner should have to sit through it while trying to get their injured animal help. 2. Broken Promises, Zero Accountability, and Abandonment of an Urgent Case We asked for medical notes, X-rays, and a treatment estimate to move forward with surgery quickly. Every deadline they gave us was missed -- noon the next day, then "by the end of the weekend," then a closed office on Sunday despite promising otherwise. By Monday we still had nothing and had to call ourselves. The receptionist apologized for the delay; the doctor's excuse was a "SYSTEM GLITCH" that was "NOT OUR FAULT," and he got angry that his own employee had apologized on his behalf. My partner, who works overnight shifts and set an alarm specifically to catch this call, woke up to a voicemail from the doctor refusing to treat our injured dog. When my partner called back, the doctor talked over him, threatened to report us to the Humane Society if surgery wasn't done within 7 days, then hung up. He set that 7-day ultimatum himself, acknowledging the urgency, yet CUT OFF CARE entirely with NO REFERRAL to another provider or emergency clinic. Walking away from an active, urgent case with nowhere for us to turn is not poor service -- it's ABANDONMENT, by the same doctor who caused every delay and then punished us for following up on what his own clinic promised. 3. Failure to Perform Promised Services, Then Withholding Records The doctor also told us, both over the phone and in person, that our dog needed a specific service performed. That service was never actually completed. When we asked for vaccination records to confirm this, he claimed the dog "did not get vaccinated" and told us to stop contacting them. We then asked for an itemized invoice to verify we weren't charged for services never rendered. He refused, and hung up on us repeatedly when we tried to follow up. The Sheriff's Department got involved and were the ones who finally retrieved the records we'd been requesting all along. It is absurd that it took police involvement just to get basic medical and financial documentation from a facility we paid out of pocket. Bottom Line: This practice showed apparent bias around affordability, zero accountability, failure to deliver services promised, and a doctor who behaved unprofessionally and vindictively abandoning an injured animal mid-treatment, withholding records, and requiring police involvement just to get basic documentation. If Dr. Owen were genuinely concerned about our dog's welfare, that would have looked like urgency and cooperation, not refusal to treat, stonewalling, and threats. We were the ones trying, at every turn, to get our dog proper care. He was the one standing in the way. This will be reported to the Maryland State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. This dog is fun-loving and well cared for. We're lifelong pet lovers with other animals in our home, and recently took him in from a family member who could no longer care for him. I am APPALLED.

So we decided today we are just ordering dog food online from now on. This has happened too many times to us now. We need reliability, and we don't have it here, sadly.

We received great communication prior to boarding our dog, and were assured that all of the kennels were 5' by 10' and that we would be able to bring our dog's crate that he is extremely attached to and sleeps in every night with blankets covering it and that he would be able to sleep there during his stay. We were told both by the emails we received and publicly visible on the website that we would receive picture updates each day and we felt like this would be a great fit for us, as we rarely leave our dog overnight anywhere. We made sure to let them know that our boy can struggle warming up to people at first, and we were assured it would all be okay. I verified again at drop-off that we would like as many photos and updates as possible and that we were very nervous to leave him. We also explained that his ID tags are on his harness that he was wearing and that he needs to wear it the whole time he is there. Also at drop off, we were told that the first night, our dog would be in a smaller kennel and that his crate wouldn't fit, but the second night they would be able to use it for him to sleep in. We were a tad confused because we had been told that all the kennels were 5' by 10', and his crate was only 3' by 4'. But we disregarded it as they said they would cover the door to his crate at night for him. We were gone for three whole days, and received only one photo the whole time with zero update on what he was doing or how he was. We only received the photo after emailing them in the middle of our trip to see if he was doing okay because we hadn't heard anything. We did not receive any updates after that. At pick up, our dog was not wearing his harness and we were told that they couldn't figure it out even though we requested it be kept on him the entire time. We asked if he had been able to sleep in his crate at all, and they said no and that they decided it wouldn't work because they wanted him to have room to walk around at night (even though he sleeps in the crate with the door closed every night at home and we had explained that to them). We're still not sure why he couldn't have had his crate in the kennel at night as we were promised and as we requested. After pick-up, our dog began barking out the window from the car at every person or animal or car we passed, which is extremely unlike him. He seemed very overwhelmed. Overall, we were pretty disappointed and don't feel as if we got what we paid for. We also paid extra for them to take him on three nature walks and were never told if they actually did. We spoke to another family at pickup and they mentioned that they had received multiple photos each day, so we were just confused and to how we fell through the cracks. We are thankful for the one picture we received and that the staff complimented how well he did, but we're still not sure what he did the whole time he was there or how it really went. He came home alive and appears to be safe and fed, so that is why we gave two stars. We will be using a private dog sitter in the future.​

He was having so much diarrhea he was bleeding from his rectum and he had sores on his mouth and was severely dehydrated. We were told that no one called us because they didn't think it was an emergency that we would need to come back early for... We immediately took him to the vet where he stayed for 3 nights for testing, blood work, IV fluids and antibiotics. Poor communication and care from the grooming room resulted in a $4,300 vet bill and emotional/mental stress for our family and dog.
