Dr. Owen is an amazing vet, and really cares about you and your pet. He and his staff always try to work with patients to ensure they receive the best care possible. He is great with dogs, cats, pocket pets, etc. He's helped us help several dogs cross the rainbow bridge, and has always been compassionate and done whatever he can to make the process as smooth as possible. We don't trust anyone else with our pets. He's worth the extra drive, and I always recommend him to anyone who is looking for a vet. read more

Do Not Trust This Clinic With Your Pet's Care -- Discriminatory, Unprofessional, and Dishonest 1. Blatant Profiling Around Affordability We came in for an emergency evaluation after my dog was injured. We called ahead, explained the situation, requested X-rays, and asked for an estimate. When the doctor got to discussing treatment options, he did not simply lay them out and let us decide. Instead, unprompted, he repeatedly said "if you can't afford it... if you can't afford it... if you can't afford it," even though we never indicated cost was a concern. NOTE: I WAS ON THE PHONE AT THE TIME AND HEARD THESE COMMENTS DIRECTLY. We had already made clear we wanted repair over amputation if possible, yet the comments persisted. A provider who assumes a client can't afford care, and says so repeatedly and unprompted, is making a judgment call he would not make about every client. This was flat-out profiling, and no pet owner should have to sit through it while trying to get their injured animal help. 2. Broken Promises, Zero Accountability, and Abandonment of an Urgent Case We asked for medical notes, X-rays, and a treatment estimate to move forward with surgery quickly. Every deadline they gave us was missed -- noon the next day, then "by the end of the weekend," then a closed office on Sunday despite promising otherwise. By Monday we still had nothing and had to call ourselves. The receptionist apologized for the delay; the doctor's excuse was a "SYSTEM GLITCH" that was "NOT OUR FAULT," and he got angry that his own employee had apologized on his behalf. My partner, who works overnight shifts and set an alarm specifically to catch this call, woke up to a voicemail from the doctor refusing to treat our injured dog. When my partner called back, the doctor talked over him, threatened to report us to the Humane Society if surgery wasn't done within 7 days, then hung up. He set that 7-day ultimatum himself, acknowledging the urgency, yet CUT OFF CARE entirely with NO REFERRAL to another provider or emergency clinic. Walking away from an active, urgent case with nowhere for us to turn is not poor service -- it's ABANDONMENT, by the same doctor who caused every delay and then punished us for following up on what his own clinic promised. 3. Failure to Perform Promised Services, Then Withholding Records The doctor also told us, both over the phone and in person, that our dog needed a specific service performed. That service was never actually completed. When we asked for vaccination records to confirm this, he claimed the dog "did not get vaccinated" and told us to stop contacting them. We then asked for an itemized invoice to verify we weren't charged for services never rendered. He refused, and hung up on us repeatedly when we tried to follow up. The Sheriff's Department got involved and were the ones who finally retrieved the records we'd been requesting all along. It is absurd that it took police involvement just to get basic medical and financial documentation from a facility we paid out of pocket. Bottom Line: This practice showed apparent bias around affordability, zero accountability, failure to deliver services promised, and a doctor who behaved unprofessionally and vindictively abandoning an injured animal mid-treatment, withholding records, and requiring police involvement just to get basic documentation. If Dr. Owen were genuinely concerned about our dog's welfare, that would have looked like urgency and cooperation, not refusal to treat, stonewalling, and threats. We were the ones trying, at every turn, to get our dog proper care. He was the one standing in the way. This will be reported to the Maryland State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. This dog is fun-loving and well cared for. We're lifelong pet lovers with other animals in our home, and recently took him in from a family member who could no longer care for him. I have had a great experience with this vet. Those who work the front desk are so nice and helpful. The medical staff is caring and gentle with my dogs. I have called them twice when my dog threw up and they gave me some advice and told me to call back if it continued. My dog ended up totally fine but then they called me the next day to check on her which I found so thoughtful. We recently adopted a dog and brought him in for a full check up and shots. They were so sweet with him and even sent him home with a bag of goodies. I have had a great experience with everyone I have come in contact with there and I am so happy they are close to our house. read more

Dr Owen is spectacular. He is gentle and kind with my pets and very patient with me in explaining how I can best care for them. He once came in over a long weekend to treat my sick kitty and he helped us say goodbye to our darling dog when it was her time to go. His staff is excellent too. Love it here! My family and I take our animals here and love Dr. Bauk and staff at Middletown Veterinary Clinic! My grandfather, especially, has trusted Dr. Bauk to come to his bicentennial farm to work on his herd for many years. He is so great with animals and makes an abundant amount of accommodations for clients and their animals! It is comforting to know our furbabies are in good hands when taken here. I just recently got a puppy and took her here as well and he gave me all the information I needed and answered any and all questions with potty training, food, and even a pack of pamphlets and other information sheets to go home with! I forgot what it was like to have a puppy and I walked out of the clinic more knowledgeable and comfortable with more tips for the new pup! We switched to Middletown Vet at the recommendation of a friend after going to a larger vet in Frederick County for 15 years. Unfortunately it just became impossible to be seen at our previous vet and we were looking for something closer. We had no issues when we did our well visits with Dr. Owen, and all of the support staff (front desk and vet techs) are so nice, but when our dog was sick that was when we had the issue. We were told if you call and have a sick animal that needs to be seen and they have no slots available that day, you will need to pay $80 on top of the $70 exam fee. I explained I felt this was price gouging given people have a normal vet bc if their dog gets sick M-F during normal business hours they want their dog to be seen and that is normal veterinary care and shouldn't require an additional fee. They then told me fortunately they had a cancellation so they could squeeze me in without the fee but if it happened again (ie if I had a sick dog that needed to be seen during normal business hours and they didn't have any appointments) it would be the $80 emergency fee. When I brought this up to Dr. Owen (I asked to speak with the business manager they said he was it) he was extremely defensive and arrogant citing that they charge this bc the "additional appointment needed for a sick animal causes added stress for him and his staff". I explained isn't that what a normal vet is for, to see your animal when they are sick during normal business hours?" He got very defensive and said if I didn't like their payment policies I could go somewhere else. So we are. Somewhere that doesn't financially take advantage of their patients. read more

HORRIBLE experience at this vet clinic! Dr. Bauk was absolutely terrible with our cat. Our cat had his first ever vet visit at Middletown vet clinic and Dr. Bauk was awful with him. I have no clue why this man is working with animals if he does not care enough about them to make sure they are comfortable in their surrounding. My cat was clearly uncomfortable in his surroundings for obvious reasons (smelling other animals, seeing big dogs, etc.). Everybody knows you have to let animals warm up to you (let alone a vet!). But Dr. Bauk tried to pull my cat out of his cat carrier immediately after taking him into the office. My cat hissed at him a little and dr. Bauk immediately got a metal poll and leash, wrapped the leash around my cats neck and yanked him out of the cat carrier. The cat carrier was on the table and the dr. Yanked him so hard and so fast that my cat went flying off of the table and because of the leash around his neck, he was hanging in the air from it for a moment. Dr. Bauk could have SERIOUSLY injured my cat. He completely refused to allow me to help calm my cat down when that is really all that needed to happen. When he was done flinging my cat around the room and tried to diagnose his issue without even really looking at him, he read entirely word for word from a veterinary magazine article. What Dr. does that?! He also kept trying push Advantage on us when we knew he didn't have fleas. This man is completely unprofessional, rude, and even dangerous! I brought a little kitten in that I found on the side of the road that was extremely sick and barely alive. Dr. Bauk was great and did an amazing job helping to save the kittens life, although the kitten ended up not making it. He also discounted the price for me as a courtesy. The girls in his office were also very helpful and friendly. I would definitely recommend this Vet! read more
