My family recently enjoyed the warm hospitality and cozy space offered by the Black Sheep Inn. Kim and Gary Stewart are wonderful hosts who go out of their way to ensure that your stay is exceptional. Both are well connected to the local food and wine scene and they introduced us to a couple of the vineyards that are within a ten-minute drive of the Inn and pointed us to an amazing restaurant in Hammondsport--again a short drive from the Inn. Although we didn't have enough time to get there, the Inn is also right next door to a brewery and distillery. Our weather was less than ideal, but it didn't matter. We spent a couple of hours one afternoon hanging out in the historic cupola room with complimentary hot drinks and cookies. As history buffs, we were impressed that the Inn is on the National Registry of Historic Places and was also a stop on the Underground Railroad. It was a perfect environment for the family to catch up before another lovely meal in the Hammondsport area. The Inn offers a full and hearty breakfast each morning--enough food that you may want to skip lunch. They are also more than accommodating for each member of our family's varied dietary preferences; both the vegans and carnivores left the table fully satisfied. We will definitely return, and maybe on our next visit we can hit that brewery! read more

We really enjoyed our stay last weekend! Simon and Miranda were so friendly and super hospitable, plus, they make and serve an incredible breakfast! The house is super historic and on the Register of Historic Landmarks as well. Everything is beautiful both inside and out. Our room didn't have a TV or fridge, but there is a TV and small fridge in the common area on the second floor. There are plenty of books, games, and puzzles. We enjoyed the beautiful weather by spending a lot of time outside. There is plenty of seating both out back and out front. We really can't say enough great things about our stay, and hope to come back again one day. read more

Excellent experience. My first time staying at a B&B and everything was been great. Miranda and Simon were both very friendly. Although I'm not vegan the breakfasts each morning were delicious. The house is historic, but with modern touches. There is common room upstairs that has seating, a tv, and a large variety of board games puzzles, and books. Definitely recommend staying here for any trip to Keuka Lake. read more

Had a fabulous time staying at the Black Sheep Inn a few nights ago. The owners Miranda and Simon are very helpful and fun to talk to. The bed was comfortable and I definitely caught up on sleep there. Not much to do nearby without a car there, but the back yard with patio and gazebo and a lovely natural backdrop make up for that. I love their attention to healthful products, chocolate and plant based diet. I would love to bring my spouse there again. read more

Just came back from my second visit in less than a year to the Black Sheep Inn and Spa! This time, I brought my entire family so we could celebrate my mothers 80th. Simon and Miranda made it so peaceful and lovely. Miranda baked one of her gorgeous cakes and it was delicious. Mom felt the love and the special touches from our gracious hosts. The inn is gorgeous, spacious, and they did everything to make sure we had a lovely time. Simon and my father got on like gangbusters. The extra special touches included champagne and chocolates in every room. If you are looking for a special getaway in the beautiful finger lakes, please visit the Black Sheep! When I did my search to leave a review for the Black Sheep Inn, I saw a few negative 1 star reviews. I also noticed that they were older reviews. It is my understanding from our stay that the new owners purchased the property just a couple of years ago. Those older reviews may have been on point for the last owner, who I understand took little interest in running the inn toward the end ownership. The rooms are immaculately clean and beautifully decorated with antiques. There are also lovely outside areas to sit, including a gazebo with gas fire pit. The property was walking distance to the village and Keuka Lake. The new owners seem like lovely people. The owners are great hosts too. We were greeted with a complimentary bottle of champaign and vegan chocolates in our room. The husband seems to take great pride in taking care of the outside and we saw him raking leaves, doing other yard work, and cleaning inside during our stay. The wife prepared wonderful VEGAN breakfasts for us. She makes a selection of granola that they place on your table, different fresh muffins each day that were soft and moist, and a selection of 5 menu items to choose from for your main breakfast. My favorite was the Full English Breakfast. When it came out to the table, I was taken back by not only how good it was, but by how much work went into making it because there were some many different selections that each had to be prepared separately. We travelled to the Finger Lakes over President's Day weekend for some relaxation and delicious wine, but we never expected our favorite part of the trip to be the incredible bed and breakfast we stayed at. Being first time guests at the Black Sheep Inn, we met the amazingly kind new owners who greeted us immediately upon arrival and showed us around the immaculately pristine and well-decorated establishment. Our room was beautiful beyond all expectations and was frankly the nicest B&B room I've ever seen. Throughout our stay we got to know the lovely English couple who own The Blacksheep Inn and enjoy absolutely delicious meals each morning. We took advantage of their Beer and Wine tour packages which were well worth every cent as we were able to adventure around several incredible vineyards and breweries without the hassle of driving. Without question, we will be staying here every time we visit the Finger Lakes. read more

The Black Sheep Inn was delightful. The architecture is intriguing and the house has phenomenal common space to explore. We enjoyed the comfort of our room and our bathroom. The breakfasts were a unique artisan blend of recipes. There is also an old Wulitzer piano in the main parlor. The piano is out of tune, but it still loved to be played. We are big fans of being outside. There are spaces to be outside with good quality tables and chairs. However there are very few flowers and the yard could use some manicuring to match the grandeur of the house. read more

Perfect location in the Fingerlakes with extraordinary hosts! We had an amazing stay at Black Sheep Inn and Spa! We were greeted by Simon, who gave us a tour of the historic octagon house that eventually led us to our spacious room where a complementary bottle of champagne awaited us! Simon and Miranda were gracious and thoughtful hosts that had exceptional insights about local wineries, breweries, restaurants and shops all within at least a ten to twenty-minute drive of the bed and breakfast. There was plenty to do during our four-night stay and there was no lack of scenery during our daily travels that included breathtaking views all along the Keuka Lake wine trail. Breakfast was more than satisfying. Each morning we overindulged in an amazing vegan breakfast full of homemade pastries, fresh fruit and even a hot meal cooked to order. Miranda is an amazing chef and both myself and my husband felt that she was a bit too modest about her self-taught talent. Absolutely delicious food! During our stay we also had a visit to the spa room, and both received a massage. It was an additional bonus that enhanced our already relaxing stay. Miranda and Simon, we cannot thank you enough for your generosity and thoughtfulness. Each day was like a new adventure and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it! My wife and I rolled the dice on the Black Sheep Inn while planning our 5th anniversary getaway. We like to stay at B&Bs on our trips, always considering it part of the "adventure!" Of all our experiences, this was hands-down, by far the most pleasant and enjoyable. Debbie and Marc are masterful hosts, and will ensure you have nothing short of a wonderful time (not to mention they're lovely people). The house is gorgeous, meticulously-maintained and full of character (Our favorite part was the collection of original wallpaper samplings framed in each room saved from restoration). Oh by the way, do you consider yourselves foodies? Then this place is DEFINITELY for you! Debbie is an incredible chef, using unique flavor profiles and locally-sourced ingredients every morning. From a kale, mushroom and red pepper breakfast pizza with garlic scape pesto and smoked mozzarella, topped with an over-easy egg - to a fluffy kale, asparagus, and broccoli frittata topped with fresh diced tomatoes... I always left the table satisfied and FULL! Beyond all this, I can't think of any other way to describe it than having your own "concierge" service... Debbie and Marc are very knowledgeable about the area, and can direct you to all the local hot spots. Marissa and I purchased the Champagne Package, featuring 4 local wineries offering a variety of bubbly and sparkling wines. They had the day planned out perfectly, right down to the nap we didn't even know we needed after so many tastings = ) Thank you so much D & M for helping to make our trip so memorable. We had a lovely weekend in the Finger Lakes while staying at the Black Sheep Inn! The owners are lovely and gave us great advice and recommendations. The Inn itself is a really cool (and very nicely refurbished) octagon house from the 1850s. The room was clean, comfortable, and very nicely decorated. The breakfasts were delicious too! The inn is located in a great area--close to downtown Hammondsport, and within a short drive to many great wineries and restaurants. read more

I was headed home on my annual migration from Sarasota to Toronto and decided to forego the numbing joys of interstate hotel chains in favour of something different. For the final night on the road I picked the Finger Lakes region of New York just because. End of April is not the most flattering time of year for upstate NY as it's still cold, rainy and the buds have barely sprouted. Nonetheless, cruising the byways at 45 mph affords a great chance to see some thought provoking scenery and try some local cuisine. The Black Sheep Inn in Hammondsport turned out to be an oasis for relaxation. The restored octagonal building is a marvel and the attention to detail is amazing. The real attraction, however, are the owners and hosts Debbie and Marc. After returning from dinner in town we sat in the beautiful living room from 8:30 to 10:30 engaged in one of the more stimulating and rewarding conversations I have had in a long time. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I strongly recommend that you put The Black Sheep Bed & Breakfast on your list of places to go. I know I'll be back! read more

We've had the pleasure of staying at the Black Sheep Inn twice over the past several years, and each time it was pure pleasure. Cozy, well-appointed rooms in a restored mansion rich with history. Farm-to-table breakfasts and snacks prepared by a foodie and experienced chef. A variety of common areas both inside and out, so you can chat with others or hide out and read a book. A bit off the beaten path in the lovely "hamlet" of Hammondsport, NY. The Black Sheep Inn is a rustic, delightful and authentic Inn under the watchful care of Debbie and her husband. They Inn itself is gorgeous with period touches and modern accommodations. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. The grounds are impeccable with a fun fire pit on the back patio for late night toddies and/or desserts. Speaking of food, Debbie is a master chef who prepares delicious meals and fun surprises during your stay. My wife and I found the energy and environment relaxing, delightful, refined and lovely. Full of great recommendations for breweries, wineries, dining and more in the Keuka Lake area, as well as being incredibly welcoming, considerate, and engaging throughout our stay. The house is beautiful (check out the awesome ballroom upstairs!), the rooms are clean and comfortable, and it's a quick drive to pretty much anywhere in the area. Breakfasts and desserts were amazing from top to bottom, all organic and made from locally-sourced ingredients. They also offer a variety of spa/activity package options, including massages, art workshops, and hot air balloon rides (be sure to visit the studio and see what kind of great art projects they're working on). If you're staying in the Hammondsport/Keuka area I cannot recommend Black Sheep Inn enough. read more

These owners do not belong in a business of hospitality when they are the epitome of inhospitable! Ten professional, middle-aged, girlfriends arrived...planning on spending time laughing, "wining", and celebrating for the weekend. We pulled up to a beautiful restored old home, only to be greeted immediately by the caretaker who told us we could not park our car in an area perfect for just unloading. We explained that we were just removing our items after a four hour drive, and would move our car as soon as we were unloaded. The owner, unpleased by this request, hawked over us, following our every move. The rudeness began at our entrance and did not end until we left two days later. Our items were taken from us as we entered, which we had originally thought "Oh, that's nice," until we realized our items were placed in an area that we were not permitted to enter. We now, no longer, had access to some of our own food and drinks without "asking" for our things. We were followed around, spied on, and told "coffee would be a better choice" then having any of our wine...which was being held captive! We were there to celebrate milestone birthdays, the end of cancer, and friendships built on 25+ years, and the owner made every attempt to make all of us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome as paying guests. However, the next morning, after putting some of their oddities behind us, we laughed at the idea of them, and went on to enjoy ourselves during a day of planned visits to local wineries. After a wonderful day of wine tastings, our gracious driver returned us back to the Inn only to find items from our bedrooms have been moved, and some items even REMOVED from our rooms and luggage!!!! The audacity of these people to go through people's belongings, and taking them out of our private rooms was beyond me! When confronted, the owner did not apologize, just defended her action as her right! While I respect the rules of the house...rules of humanity and hospitality trump all. These owners do not belong in a business of hospitality when they are the epitome of inhospitable! As wonderful a time I had enjoying friends, local wineries, and local people, I couldn't get out of that stressed - filled, unwelcome Inn any sooner. A real shame after spending a great time with friends! Choose another Inn, the area is wonderful! read more

My wife and I spent our honeymoon at the Black Sheep Inn, and it was fantastic to say the least! It was my first experience with a B&B so I was timid off the bat, but Mark and Deb made us feel comfortable from the moment we walked in the door. Gorgeous octagonal house, and the breakfasts were gourmet!!!...We went to bed dreaming of what would be waiting for us when we woke up the following morning. Mark and Deb know the area so well, and they were quick to offer suggestions when we discussed the different areas of the lakes we would be visiting. We had an action-packed few days, and I will look back fondly on my honeymoon because of how easy Mark and Deb made it for us. We hope to be back soon! read more

Great inn in a fabulous location. Clean and comfortable with a lot to do! My husband and I took advantage of the Tiffany and Treasures package. We had a lot of fun learning how to do stained glass with Marc. The following day learned how to throw pottery. John, the instructor was knowledgeable and patient. Although the Black Sheep Inn is an interesting historic establishment near the quaint Finger Lakes town of Hammondsport, we won't stay there again. When we return to this region, we'll look for more welcoming establishments in New York's premier wine district. Many are as conveniently located to this area's outstanding wineries as is the Black Sheep Inn. If what you want when visiting a B & B is to relax in the privacy of your room, as we did, to take a break from your public self and enjoy some time alone with your partner or friends, this might not be the place for you. Why? "Food or beverage in guest rooms is prohibited," reads the policy, which is strictly enforced. Therefore, if you'd like to enjoy some wine and cheese (or, for that matter, a bag of chips, a soda, or a bedtime snack) while you are curled up in your pajamas in the privacy of your room, forget the Black Sheep Inn. Your coming and going will be monitored. Don't imagine that you will enjoy some romance coupled with a bottle of champagne on your anniversary, or that you'll sip a cup of coffee as you dress for breakfast. Although you can order handmade chocolates for a celebration, you won't be allowed to enjoy them in your room; neither can you use the candles sold in their store. Having stayed in many bed and breakfasts over the course of many years, my husband and I have never encountered such practices before. In this regard, the Black Sheep Inn is truly a black sheep. Unfortunately, we didn't read the inn's policies before we arrived, simply assuming they were similar to those we've encountered previously. The link for their policies is at the very bottom of their webpage. (You won't find it in the menu.) We are public professionals who don't smoke, don't have small children, don't own pets, pay our bills on time, own our own spacious and hospitable home on several acres, and didn't expect anything unusual in terms of policies. We did abide by the inn's policies and ate in one of the public rooms, hoping to have some degree of privacy. However, while trying to relax and enjoy our food and wine, we were checked on, often, ostensibly to make sure that our needs were met. Having spent more than $500 to stay there, we were very disappointed. Whereas I am impressed by the time, energy, dedication, and money this couple put into renovating--and saving-- this beautiful building, my personal philosophy remains, "people before things." The next time I visit the Finger Lakes, I'll visit an inn that might have less architectural significance but greater personal warmth. read more

I loved everything about our weekend here. My girlfriend apparently planned the whole trip months before it happened. I had no idea. I thought were just going to the Finger Lakes for kayaking and hiking and I didn't even know where we were going to stay. I was so excited when we arrived at The Inn. The building, rooms, and quiet location near Lake Keuka are charming. It was neat to flip through the photo book in the central living room area and see all the work that went into the Inn. The owners are super friendly, open-minded (very LGBT friendly), and knowledgeable. They treat their guests like friends. They helped plan a perfect weekend, including winery, brewery, dining, and activity recommendations. All of the recommendations were on point and tailored for our personal preferences. The fresh, organic breakfasts created by chef and co-owner, Debbie, are amazing. She made literally the best blueberry pancakes that I've ever had. Her coffee has a light, floral or citrus-y flavor and was delicious. The breakfast sandwiches were also fantastic. I was the recipient of a surprise hot air balloon ride, where we got engaged. :) The balloon ride was awesome and blew my mind. I also enjoyed our private candlelit breakfast on the patio. We hiked, had massages, went to a brewery, enjoyed an arts fair, and loved the hospitality and food provided so richly by Debbie and Marc. Can't wait to go back. Everything you could possibly want from a B&B. Almost insanely clean, the home is spectacular and clearly very loved. Owners greeted us as old friends and gave us great tips on how to fully enjoy our wine touring. Breakfast was outstanding, organic and local. The owners, Deb and Mark, made our weekend getaway perfect. They were two of the nicest, friendliest, most accommodating people we have ever met. My best friend and I wanted to plan a relaxing "girls" weekend full of wine, pampering and laid-back fun. We decided on the Girlfriend's Getaway package and couldn't have asked for a better experience than the one we received at The Black Sheep Inn! From the moment we pulled up and were warmly greeted by Deb, to the delicious breakfasts, excellent and relaxing massages at their spa (complete with comfy robes!), the chocolate and cheese pairings at a local winery, a perfectly guided private wine tour and suggestions for great local restaurants for dinner (and even a ride into town after a day of drinking at the wineries). Every need was anticipated and graciously taken care of. The Inn itself is absolutely beautiful, top to bottom. Mark and Deb are warm, inviting and it is clear that they love what they do. The Inn is beautiful! If you enjoy someone hovering over you in a judging, condescending, controlling manner, this is the place for you. Upon my arrival I was taken aback by the unwillingness of the owner to be hospitable. Having been in a service business most of my life, I find it hard to believe that it is necessary to have your guests stop their conversation and stand up so that you could move the couch they were sitting on back an inch because it was apparently skewed from its original position. My glass was taken from me and moved to the adjoining room because I apparently didn't study the schematics of proper glass placing at the Inn. A bag was moved out of my room because it had food in it. If you're taking someone's property, I find it highly unreasonable to place it in an area that is off limits to him or her. Breakfast was gourmet but everyone left hungry. After much travel and enjoying many Bed and Breakfast Inn's I found this to be the worst, tense experience. I felt it was a lot of money to be totally disrespected. read more
