Ah i have been here a couple of times and every time has been amazing! Coffee is great and love the selection of cakes and pies available on hand for breakfast lunch or just a little snack. I love their lemon and myrtle cake - the cake itself is so soft and yummy! I also enjoy their quiches. They have the first bitcoin atm for those that need it. They also have the fresh green juices. Some of the sweets can get pretty pricey though! Alas, i have yet to try their famous watermelon cake. Will have to do so this summer. Street parking is available. But you can hardly find any during the week, probably more luck on the weekends.

Black Star is a patisserie that has become an institution in its own way by producing all original recipes but keeping to traditional if hand making all it's creations. When you walk into the Rosebery bakery it's reminiscent of the classic movie that we all know, "Oliver" and you are in a world of food glorious food. From pies, croissants, ginger ninjas to the famous watermelon cake the choices are crazy as they are amazing. I frequent this place for the herb and mushroom quiche and a coffee on the way to work. Both items are made with love and for only $10.00 it's a nice way to start the day.

A buzzing and energetic place filled with the most gorgeous cakes and pastries. I'm in heaven. There is also a savouries quiche and pie section and lots of plain, wholemeal and sourdough breads on sale to take home. If you want to get a piece of the cafe's signature Strawberry Watermelon Cake with Rose Scented Cream, you'd better arrive early (around 8am) as this is a winner and sells out fast! The cake consists of two layers of almond dacquoise, fresh whipped cream, watermelon, Strawberries, Iranian pistachios and rose petals. Another favourite of mine is the moist Orange Cake With Persian Fig. This dainty little morsel is a pretty work of art. It is made from whole boiled oranges, and is garnished with cream cheese icing and seasonal preserved fruit, Persian figs, pistachios and rose petals. I highly recommend this cake - beautiful and oh so moist and deliciously decadent. The coffee here is strong and flavoursome as it is made from Little Marionette coffee beans served in colourful cups. Go for large or you'll be going back for more. The only problem in this cafe is the lining up to get served. You feel like you are back at school waiting, waiting to be served and getting to the top of the line to be told that your favourite cake has been sold out. If only you could sit down and receive table service, it would make this place better.

"I did not know they do lunches," was the first thing I said when my friend suggested the place as this place is well known for their dessert. Their lunch menu is basic, you'll find your usual pies, salad and sandwiches. There's a 'make-your-own' toast section next to the bubbler and get your own cutlery and condiments section. The place has an industrial chic feel with high ceiling and exposed brick. So what makes people fallen over heels with this place? Is it the comfort food they serve, the beautiful looking slash photo ready cake, or because almost everything there taste great? Maybe it's the combination of everything. I started my lunch with Lamb Shank and Red Wine Pie with some Salad on the side. The pie pastry was perfectly flaky, the filling was tender and tasty. The salad was perfectly seasoned with great combination of spinach, pumpkin, grilled capsicum and goat's cheese. They're all delicious on their own but complemented each other when eaten together. My Pork and Lamb Sausage Roll was too dry for my taste. It probably spent a few minutes too long in the oven, otherwise it would've tasted great. I closed the meal with some dessert. You don't go to Black Star Pastry and not have their dessert. And of course I had their famous Strawberry and Watermelon Cake. It was light and not overly sweet. My daughter and I enjoyed it immensely. But with fame comes expectation. I did come with a very high expectation and although it tasted great, I was expecting a 'wow' moment and i did not get there. The Orange Cake with Persian Fig was delicious. The cake was moist with a prominent orange syrup flavour and the cream cheese that cuts through all that sweetness. The macadamia brownie was rich and a bit dark which I prefer. Suffice to say I walked out happier. Nothing beats great food!

Oh Black Star, you things so well, yet some not so well. Hmmmmm.... I'm not a fan of tuck shop run of the mill sandwiches, but do get cravings at certain places like Black Star. But I am disappointed every time!! You'd think I'd learn by now. Find the sandwiches very bland. And I am someone who can eat bland. But sandwiches are simply too dry & lack flavour. Spotted a new item. The lychee and raspberry cake. Since the watermelon rose water is the most IGed cake, one does not see and not try. Thoroughly & utterly disappointed!! Am on same level as Chinese fruit sponge cake. Was expecting a bit more oomph, especially at $10 a piece. Best part was the chocolate base. Staff here are either very helpful or not at all. There is no middle ground.

Delicious strawberry cake, orange cake and blueberry tart! Exactly the same flavours as Newtown, less people but there's still a queue. Service was pretry poor with waitresses rushing your order, plating salads in a mess, slamming coffee onto your table. Just get used to it and lean back to avoid spillage on your clothing. Drip coffee was no good, no aroma, very watery. Something they need to work on. Recommend their pastry, cakes for sure. You might like to just take it to go so you have enjoy the entire delightful experience without drawbacks.

Came to try the famous watermelon cake, it wasn't as good as the hype. I tried 2 versions: the single take away portion and the big cake for a house warming. Both times, the flavours and textures seemed a bit strange. I would prefer to eat a watermelon by itself.

    Sold out already!

Black star pastry Newtown has huge shoes to fill. Arriving 12:30 on the second day of the rosebery opening saw only 3 items left on the menu available. Everything else was sold out. Having said that the only pie left was more than up to scratch; delicious light pastry and tender, taste-filled lamb shanks. Baristas were on their toes but ordering staff a shambles (happily accepted a complimentary iced chocolate for the mixup though). Small detail but the straws on offer were cheaper than cheap. Slightest pressure and they split. Coffee was the best we have had in Sydney so far. And they need some home made tomato sauce. Will be back after they iron out their wrinkles.

And on a late weekday afternoon, they were sold out of the drinks that caught my eye. The desserts are fine, but some of the prices are so expensive that I don't feel like I'd miss out on much if I didn't get them. The average price seemed to be $28 for a dessert smaller than the size of my palm. While some of the flavors were more unique, based on the ones I tried, they weren't actually good combinations or just blended together so that you might as well be eating one flavor.

After eating dinner somewhere else, my friend and I stopped at Koi for dessert. We go there only 30 min before close, so there weren't a lot of desserts left. We tried two of them - a pandan cake and a mango dessert. They were both beautiful looking, but don't recall being blown away by the taste. And it was very expensive. I thought to myself that it was not what I hoped. But I'll give the benefit of the doubt that maybe at the end of the night all they have the less popular desserts left. Next time I'm there, I'll give it another shot.

Hungarian donut? Cone of deliciousness? Kürtösh? Call it what you want but it's so good!…read more My friend recommended the hazelnut Kürtösh but the pistachio one looked so good that I did what any normal person would do... got both! I preferred the pistachio Kurtosh. The hazelnut one was like candy on top of the cone and very crunchy like candy. These are made to order so take around 10 or 15 minutes. Not really ideal for a grab and go but was worth the stop. They have a ton of other pastries as well that are pay by the pound. The kurtosh was really good, especially with coffee. I wouldn't go out of my way to go here but if nearby I would definitely go again.

It's quite good. Honestly, I'd say forget the pastry twister and go one of the Slab Cakes instead. Oh, so good! So far, my favourite has been the Catastrophe Flourless Choc Cake. Or mayyyybe actually the Lemon Crumble Cheesecake. Pretty much mention Mum's Chocolate Cake and I'm ready to trip someone over for a bite! If you can't choose, you could order a sliver of each and call it day. This is the best bit about Kurtosh - everything is sold by weight, and there's no minimum (or maximum) for what you buy. So you can literally order a sliver each of four kinds of cake. Hoorah! Extra bonus: open late so you can pop in for after dinner dessert.

I thought I reviewed all my Sydney places but I guess not…read more One of those places where it is pic worthy/photogenic but kinda overprice and taste only ok. I wouldnt say the food is bad but it also didnt wow me either. It sounded a lot better than it tasted and looked. Even when I looked at the pic now, I'm like damn that looks good. I'm not saying you can get it anywhere also but in terms of taste, it's not anything that is too memorable. I got the Lobster and crab omelette. Just think of all the expensive stuff inside an omelette and that's what it was lol. I wouldnt say it's terrible though, just not that memorable.

We came here due to the good reviews on zomato and we def think this place is wayyy overrated!…read more We ordered the most frequently mentioned salmon dish on zomato - the salmon was well cooked but oily and didn't go well with the seasoning on the top. The dish came with a poach egg and mayo? which didn't make sense at all cuz u have nothing to dip in with at all. The squid ink pasta tasted ok but both dishes were overpriced ($25) for brunch. The presentation of their dishes were kinda creactive which explained why there were a number of instagrammers there... We went there on a hot day and somehow the AC was not on... There were flies everywhere... The food came up fairly quick but after I said the food was just okay our server simply ignored me...

There was something so sweet & simple about that. I wish you would see that more in the states. The gelato flavors change what seems like every day or every few days. I came here a few times during my trip and every time there were new specialty flavors on the board.
