This was my first time here, I've been planning to go for months & a group of my friends and I decided to sign up for the 'Chill' session on a Sunday evening. It was SO GOOD!! It was definitely a lot of deep stretching and breathing, but it worked wonders for me afterwards. The instructor was great, it was a little difficult to understand which poses to get into, I think mostly because of how dark it is. I'm looking forward to doing more of this type of class on Sundays as well as venturing into other classes. read more

If you're new to Yoga highly recommend the Beginner class to learn the basics. Flow class with Sybil was really fun and challenging with some knowledge of poses but I know I need improvement, where I would go back to beginner class. Definitely will be back! Make sure to have water, towel, mat, and block. They do sell these items readily available and can borrow black and mat too. Water is important because lots of moving and does mention it will be hot in there. read more

I took a class with Caitlyn and it was one of the best yoga classes I've ever taken! It was hard but still doable, and this was the first time I've ever taken a yoga class where the instructor told us what to do instead of demonstrating and doing it/leading in front of the whole class. But it made sense because the class was packed; there wouldn't have been room for her to demonstrate anyways. Regardless, Caitlyn did an amazing job and I was able to follow along easily because she explained the moves so well. There was a lot of repetition, but I liked this because it helped you get an idea of what you're doing before she speeds it up. It gave me a chance to feel it out and work on my technique. Usually, you have to bring your own mat, but since this was my first time, my first mat rental was free and on the house. After that, it'll be $5. But I really appreciated that they allowed the first rental to be free so that people can decide if they like it before committing to buying their own yoga mat. Overall, a 10/10 experience. Staff were also incredibly friendly and welcoming. I'll be back! read more

I came to my yoga practice at a time before the pandemic when small neighborhood studios with intimate communities and hand-on teachers were the norm. You knew your instructors and classmates, and they knew you, and over the days and weeks you'd come to practice the instructors would not only lead you through a sequence of poses, but also actually individually instruct you on how to improve your form. Teachers provide hands-on adjustments and would call your name in class: "Carol, bring your left shoulder a few inches down; Joel and Katie lift your right legs a little higher"--and this was all comfortable, because you were with your little yoga community, your happy safe place. In this space, you didn't just practice yoga, but you LEARNED. You IMPROVED. You GREW. Because you had the coaching and the support to do so. I can even remember a time when Black Swan (downtown location, before this one opened) felt more like this. But since the pandemic killed off the smaller studios and dozens if not hundreds more students have all flocked to Black Swan, it's become the yoga equivalent of a supermarket. It feels corporate, impersonal, crowded--more of a brand than a community. In comparison to the old-school yoga experience, the Black Swan of today feels about as personal as Gold's Gym. Even if you go to one of the midday classes when the class size is usually small, the ever-rotating cast of teachers and the inconsistency of the student population mean you never really build community or familiarity. Most of the time, however, classes are way too large for instructors to even try to personalize their teachings. I've never had any of the teachers adjust me. The teachers rarely put effort into actually coaching you to improve your form and your practice. No matter how consistent you are, there's not possibility for growth, because no one is going to tell you if you're doing a pose wrong, and no one is going to show you how to improve. I get the same experience (minus the heated room) using my $20/month alomoves.com account. And about those heated rooms? Holy hell, y'all, they smell DISGUSTING. Especially if you come to an evening class, be prepared for pools of sweat all over the floor, unsanitized mats and props, and the odor of musty balls and armpits mixed with a hint of Axe. As with the level of instruction, it was't always this bad, but in recent months they have totally dropped the ball. The last time I was there I left class early because I thought I was going to throw up. I miss the way in-person yoga used to be taught, when it was more than someone putting together a playlist and a series of poses. And I have friends who I KNOW are amazing instructors, because I've taken their classes at other studios and/or at Black Swan before it became so superficial, but there is just no way they can provide that level of instruction or foster that level of community when they're teaching sixty people at a time. As with everything else, profit over people, yeah? But you'd think at least they could mop the studio floors. EDIT: I am reposting this review because Yelp flagged it as "being posted in multiple locations" which is absolutely not true. Probably Black Swan's lame attempt at silencing anything negative, which... extra ew. Knocking off an extra star just for that shady behavior. Prior to this, I have never been to a yoga studio. But this one can TAKE MY MONEY. The instructors are amazing and planning a very fluid and rigorous flow. But there are people of all levels there, so it's not intimidating. It gives you something to work toward. When it was time for our rest at the end, the instructor waved cool air over us with a towel that had essential oils in it. It was the single most magical moment in yoga history. I cannot afford the membership yet, but you can take a couple of classes a week for a minimum of a $10 donation each class and you practice those flows on your own at home. The sister studio to the downtown location offers the same compassionate, nurturing environment as downtown. Some of the same teachers but also many others that don't teach downtown. Coming here is a great way to broaden your practice by working with other teachers. I love the fact that I don't fall into the trap of taking the same class every time and therefore never challenging myself or learning more. She's consistently AMAZING with her calming approach, depth of knowledge and wonderful teaching style. I just love her classes.
