Our favorite local date night location hands down. We love the atmosphere and love the fact that if we feel like we want to dress up and have a sexy romantic night out where we can put on our nicest clothes and feel like we are out on the town in a much bigger city. If you wear a tshirt and jeans you might feel a little out of place here but I am pretty sure they will not refuse you service if you do. We love the music, live music every night at least every night we have ever been there and it is generally jazz type music which gets no complaints from us. One star is honestly all I could give them there food was not good. There was a hair in my boyfriends straw. I went to Black Water Lounge less than a week ago with a group of 10 for a bachelorette party. It was very busy when we got there around 9:30/10:00 p.m. There wasn't anywhere the ten of us could sit, which I don't mean as a criticism.. Frankly, I would have been shocked if there was a table for ten wide open when it was that busy. We went somewhere else, hated it, came back to Black Water and found a booth had opened up! We stayed for about 3 hours and had a wonderful time!! The drink menu is extensive, and there are a LOT of fun and interesting martinis and mixed drinks to choose from. There is also a food menu, which isn't that big but looked interesting. I didn't get food, so I won't comment on that. The waitress was very nice and accommodating. She took orders using our first names so passing out drinks and checks at the end of the night was very simple. She even gave us a bottle of champagne for toasts at no charge. The music was good. Just got home from a night out with friends. We left our jobs 35-40 miles away to go the Black Water for a night of catching up. After a few appetizers and drinks, we closed out our tab. We continued to sit and visit when we were asked (as the waiter was clearing our table) to move to a different table. A larger group of young women was sitting at the table across from us. We were all a little confused and weren't sure we heard what was just asked of us. As he continued to clear our table, we all sort of slunk out of our seats (feeling a little humiliated as others around us watching us get up and another group move right in~as if WE did something wrong). You know it's their bad when the guy bussing the table is apologizing and feeling embarrassed that customers were just asked to get up and move. We were offered the table the group who was now sitting at our table was at, but the mood was certainly killed. As we were leaving I let the others know it wasn't right and I was going to talk to the manager. The manager was completely inexperienced to handle any complaints. She kept looking at me and saying nothing but 'is there anything I can do?' No apology. No 'yeah, you shouldn't have had to move'. She did say that they take reservations and needed that booth. There was no reservation sign on that booth when we arrived. And, don't reserve spots if you don't know they are going to be available. She asked if I wanted a free martini coupon. Didn't need that as we'll never be back. We'll be happy to spend our money at all the other fabulous places downtown where we know we will be able to keep the seat we sit in from the time we get there till the time we are ready to leave. ~Shari read more

Although the martini was great, I have rarely experienced such poor service. We sent one of our husbands to the bar for our first order. We didn't see a waitress for at least 30 minutes on a Saturday. They said their printer broke after we FINALLY got someone to take our order and never got our drinks. (We went to the bar to go ask what happened...UNCOMFORTABLE!!!!) Ambiance, yes. But customer service? No. All the manager wanted to do is explain what happened to our order- not correct it...couldn't help but notice that people coming in and ordering after we FINALLY had a waitress take our order were already served... A year ago, this place would have had a five star rating from me but the last two times I've been there I've been disappointed. The first of the disappointments came a few months back when we went in and each had a few drinks and an app. We gave the bartender CASH for his tip. I signed the slip and crossed over the tip portion and filled in the actual amount of the bill. They arbitrarily added OVER 20% to the bill without my consent! Baaaaaad customer service. I let it slide, I was sick and did not feel like dealing with it that day. Let it go. A few weeks back we were once again in. Mind you,we've spent thousands of dollars here since it's opened. That is not an exaggeration but when quality begins to decline, I am not real likely to go back. I have had at least 100 Ole' Blue Eyes over the years. This time, it was a watered down, over shaken mess that had no taste of alcohol whatsoever. I also had a June in January and again, watered down with no taste. Just bland. Both of them. I finally ordered a Hendricks Martini and again, watered down. Really??? I had drank nothing else that night. The bartender has been there for years.... We are frequents with the card. I know what we spent there in the past and I am afraid that with these past two incidents, I am frustrated and reluctant to go back. Duluth is a small town. You don't want your locals business to dry up. Tourists only make your business thrive a few months of the year. I am not a complainer (rule 1 in customer service BW, most people don't complain, you just loose their business, permanently and it causes a ripple effect.) but when my past two experiences there have been less than stellar... read more

Went to Blackwater Lounge for our wedding cocktail hour(s). Had a little bit of a set back due to a situation with a guest in our party, Carson and her staff handled everything so wonderfully.
