Came here after spending a day up north since my sister recommended it. It was a pretty slow day for a Sunday and our server was nice, but it took longer than usual for our drinks and even longer once we finally placed our food order. I'm glad there were vegan options but I noticed once I got my food I was missing my mixed veggies and I told the server about it. She brought out green beans, which is better than nothing but the picture shows mixed veggies. And my sister was missing bread from her meal as well so we had to request that as well. I was kind of hoping for a better experience, but the interior was cozy, kind gave off a woody vibe, and there was a toy train, making it rounds near the ceiling.

Late night dining in Duluth. Our flight was delayed and we arrived in Duluth later than expected. We were starving when we got there. It was late and one of the only things that was still serving food was Black Woods. They welcomed us in and got us drinks and we ordered food right away. We decided to share a salad and an appetizer. We had the toasted sesame chicken salad, and the bulldog bites. The bulldog bites were absolutely delicious and we would totally order this again. The sesame chicken salad was not that great. The chicken was cold and the lettuce was huge pieces of lettuce. Our server was fantastic and offered to get us something else, but we opted to keep the salad.. The service was really great and we would definitely return. We also really liked that they had local beers on tap.

This is a great spot for fine dining with a relaxing atmosphere. The food is superb and there's a nice selection of wonderful entrees and drinks. We had the brussel sprouts and bacon for our appetizer. It was simple, yet so flavorful and tasty! I had the shrimp and scallop pasta and my husband had the New York strip with a side of steamed broccoli and baked potato. Both dishes were delicious and cooked perfectly. The service was friendly and our whole experience was so nice and enjoyable. We will definitely come again! Highly recommended.

Went here for a quick drink & food before the bulldogs hockey game. We sat in the bar at a booth. Overall it was welcoming & friendly. There is a large parking it attached for easy access to the restaurant. The food came out decently quick & we had a variety of options. All were tasty. It is a more fancy restaurant in the area but I wouldn't say it is really the best food in the area.

One of my fav traditions is stopping here for a nice lunch before camping up north. We can always count on delicious food and great service. Burgers and waffle fries are always great. They recently added a delicious poke bowl option. Ambiance is nice with traditional rich dark wood and bright windows with great views.

Black woods was a very pleasant surprise. Not having eaten at many Duluth restaurants, we stumbled upon this one and were treated with amazing service. The hostess went the extra mile, opening the door and storing the walker of my grandma. My food was very good - the Thai chicken sandwich was not something I'd ever seen, but was quite good and filling. The real star was the Dr Pepper mule, which tasted exactly like the soda. It's a great spot for a family dinner and quite relaxing.

Happened to be visiting Duluth and heard good things about Black Woods. It's a fine restaurant and a nice room but it just isn't anything special. It's just plain okay My prime rib was iffy at best and the issue with all my friends meals were the intense levels of maple syrup on the carrots that permeated their dishes. Service was great. People were nice. But the food and ambiance were simply just mediocre

We had checked reviews and saw there were some reviews indicating this restaurant was not as good as it used to be. We decided to see for ourselves as the menu, other positive reviews sounded like it was an incredibly good place to go. It is. It was. It was busy, being a Sunday morning especially, but the staff was handling it all well from our perspective . I used to manage restaurants a long time ago and was impressed with the flow. Our waitress, Natalie, was delightful, knew the menu well to describe and answer questions, and we were not wanting for anything. She checked on us, always grinning and managing the iace well. I had the banana bread pancakes. A perfect choice ! They came and looked like a picture stacked up and flowing down with Carmel, maple bourbon syrup, marzcapone cream and nuts. So delicious. I took half home and enjoyed the rest later. Heated up perfectly with a 20 second zap in micro. My son had the corn beef hash skillet and said his was just as good as mine. We both agreed that we had no idea why reviews were negative, especially going on a busy morning. We will be going back every time we visit. I recommend you do too.

Sent it back. The second steak? Also overcooked. Then came the moment that sealed it: The chef marched to our table with a photo of a steak on his phone, insisting maybe the "lighting" made it look overcooked. Meanwhile, my steak -- in the exact same lighting -- was perfectly medium‑rare. The entire dining room stopped to watch this arrogant performance. It was humiliating and completely uncalled for. The third attempt showed up in a to‑go box, and when my friend opened it at home, it was practically raw (see attached picture). Spite from the chef? Three failed steaks, zero accountability, and a public lecture from the chef. After two decades of choosing this restaurant for special occasions, we're done.

One thing I noticed was that there were three empty tables. We waited and came back, and lo and behold, the same tables were still empty, and remained so for basically the entire duration of our dinner. The food was fine, nothing really stood out per se. The steak was a bit under-seasoned, and the salad my wife had was ok. I would say that the cocktails were well-prepared. I can wax poetic about wandering around the building but, that can be for another time. The brewhouse is a cool place to hang after you've become weary of hitting all the shops on Canal street. Nestled in the old brewery you will experience first and foremost some solid beers (take some crowlers home with you), and some decent food. I think we at lunch here three times? I also want to mention the their beer is fresh, well-made, and there is usually a taproom only beer available. I have missed it the last few years but, they had a barleywine that was outstanding.
