Happy we stopped by this lovely community restaurant in Downtown Duluth! The menu is simple but thoughtfully crafted with local ingredients, and we happened to visit on a Tuesday when they had live music -- such a nice touch. I started with the Tempura Fried Cauliflower appetizer, which ended up being my favorite dish of the night! You can choose between sambal aioli or crabapple BBQ sauce -- I had the aioli drizzled on top and the crabapple sauce on the side, and it was amazing. I'm not usually into autumn spice flavors, but the crabapple sauce was subtle, slightly smoky, and paired beautifully with the crispy cauliflower. For my entrée, I had the Coconut Curry Bowl. It was flavorful and hearty, though a bit strong and salty for my personal taste. They also offer a kids' menu with generous portions (I've included a photo for reference -- grilled chicken, fries, and veggies). Overall, great vibes, friendly service, and a wonderful cause. Fun place to visit...it's a beautiful restaurant with certain menu items better than others. My smallish salad was not outstanding but the fries, served in an impressive stand and with lots of herbed aioli, was (latter item recommended, former not). My friends had scallops and the Angus burger, which they enjoyed. Service was ok...it was a busy night but the staff was attentive. Decided to eat here before a comedy show at the zeitgeist theater and had some mixed feelings. The Good: -Ambiance: The restaurant feels modern and the venue itself is a fun maze to explore. Great for a date night! -Events: They have a variety of fun events here that are worth checking out! -Root cellar cocktail: This was my favorite cocktail that I tried in Duluth. Fruity/earthy upfront with cardamom and rosemary in the back. Really fun drink! -Service: Service was courteous, attentive, and pleasant. The Bad: -Prices were extremely high considering the presentation, quality/flavor, and portion size of the food. If you're made of money and don't really care about spending $76 on dinner then maybe ignore this comment. But if value really matters to you, this is not the place to go. -Vegan scallops. The scallops were good and I liked the edamame puree but I didn't think the flavor or portion size was impressive enough to warrant $15. People have been raving about this item. Maybe it would be impressive for those brand new to vegan food and plant forward eating, but it wasn't that impressive to me. -Curry bowl with tofu. We received 5 pieces of tofu... for an extra $5. The presentation and quantity of rice and vegetables given was lacking considering this entree was a whopping $22. The flavor was good but nothing I haven't had before. Overall, I'd say to go to Zeitgeist for the events and drinks but skip the food. I think there's better value food in town. read more

It's been a while since we have managed to get to Zeitgeist, and they really knocked it out of the park this trip! We had a vegan with us, so we all wanted to try the seared vegan scallops. Holy moly, they were AMAZING. I really didn't expect much, but if I had been blindfolded, I literally would've thought I was eating seared sea scallops. They were made out of mushrooms, but they didn't taste like mushrooms. They were some type of vegan wizardry. I hope they put them on the menu permanently! My husband and I got the sea bass, which was also delicious, but I can't stop thinking about those vegan scallops. Which is why there are three photos of them below, and none of the sea bass. My colleague ordered the Pork Tenderloin and was amazed at the flavor, tenderness and delightful sides. Horrible service last night. Our waiter couldn't even remember to bring ketchup with our truffle fries. We had to get up and ask for it and he acted like it was the first time we asked him. Long wait times for him to do anything and he was very absent in attending to our needs. Food was meh. Chicken pasta with basalmic wax line bad wedding food. I've traveled to Duluth a couple of times for work over the past several months and I always make it a point to come back here for a meal. The coconut curry rice bowl is an absolute masterpiece! I've tried it with both the chicken and the tofu. It's the perfect amount of coconut and curry and the veggies are so fresh. The chicken was tender and the tofu was grilled perfectly. Def recommend taking advantage of the thai chili sauce it comes with for the perfect addition of spice and heat. I've gotten a side salad each time with different vinaigrette's and dressings. You can't go wrong with any of them. For being a side salad, the portion was generous and all of the veggies were perfectly crisp and fresh. Lunch wasn't too crowded (not sure if that's due to the construction) but it's always been pretty busy at dinner! If you're in Duluth for work or fun, this is a definite must-have! read more

Had a wonderful dinner last night before seeing Annie. We had the mussels and fries for our apps. The mussels were awesome and the bread was a bonus for getting all the yummy juices at the bottom. I had a cocktail off there list that was very good followed by a beer. They were out of several IPAs. My wife and daughter both had non-alcoholic drinks for $6 each, but they both loved them. We then had the burger, grilled cheese, and open face chicken sandwich and they were all very good. Also had very good service. My family and I decided to try Zeitgeist cafe for dinner during a trip to Duluth. It's located conveniently downtown, features a full bar, and within walking distance of the Lake Superior shore walk. We grabbed drinks at the bar while waiting for the table. Their mixed drinks are good and they had a few beers on tap. I liked how they featured beers from local breweries. The dinner menu had a decent amount of options for salads, burgers, and bigger entrees. Between our table we tried the Salmon Burger, a regular burger, and the Cheese Plate. As a whole, the burgers were ok. The burgers were very bland. The toppings on them saved them from being terrible and gave them the flavor it needed, but still fell a bit flat on flavor for me. Service was good throughout and overall Zeitgeist wasn't a bad place. I just feel like there are other places in Duluth that I've enjoyed much better for dinner for the same price. read more

Fresh soup was great. Highly recommend the chicken soup I'd they have it that day. Fresh ingredients and real dark meat chicken fill the cup I had. I wasn't disappointed. Couldn't choose from a few menu choices but finally settled on the bison burger. The burger had bleu cheese and gruyere cheese. I added mushrooms to the burger and it was good. I wish they would have cooked it as I asked though. I requested medium and they cooked it well. It was too rough. Other than that. The fries were hand cut and tasted fresh and were well seasoned. The staff can be nice or snooty depending on the people they help and their judgement of you though. Wish that wasn't the case. A paying customer should be treated with respect and with importance. Yes and may I have another! This is your 'classy' bar on the downtown strip ... and WINE IS HALF PRICE (on Tuesdays?). The staff is great and friendly. The bartenders, both times I visited, are knowledgeable and friendly. I had the salmon salad on a ​visit and a burger another visit. Both were flavorful and delicious. I would recommend this place for happy hour with co-workers, date night, or well just stop in a and judge for yourself. It's inflated Applebee's prices, but definitely worth it! Oh, and my silly arse was drinking wine and caught up with a date and LEFT MY BELOVED apple products at the bar! We were looking for a mid-priced place to eat outside of Canal Park in Duluth (where parking is severely limited and we didn't want to walk after a long hike earlier in the day). Zeitgeist came up as a highly-rated option, so we went for it even though we didn't have a reservation on a holiday weekend. We were seated immediately when we arrived just before 6 on a Saturday, with the lower level packed and the upper level just filling out. They originally wanted to seat the two of us next to a loud party of 4, but my gf/SO/fiance/pseudo-wife requested that we move to a table of our own (I like the fact that she's not afraid to speak up, whereas I tend to go with the flow and not make waves). The decor has a lot of 50's overtones, which my fiance really appreciates and I kind of respond, "That's nice, dear." The remarkable thing, to my primitive male mind at least, is where the heck they found that furniture and accoutrements and how much did it cost. We started with a glass of rose each, but it was pretty dull. I decided to go with a local beer (Bent Paddle Bent Hop IPA) with dinner, while she nursed her rose and kept hydrating after our 90-degree hike earlier in the day. I ordered the rice bowl, which was a nice mix of flavors and completely filled me up. I do not recall what she ordered (as she didn't share it with me!), but I do know that she enjoyed dinner. Service was attentive and interacted. Food was served promptly and correctly. Decor was fun. There was a good energy in the place. We enjoyed dinner so much that the future spouse wanted to come back for breakfast the next morning before our bike ride (which didn't happen for several reasons, but I would've been fine if it had). We were surprised that the girls (they were young employees) at our hotel on Park Point weren't familiar with Zeitgeist, but they'll be checking it out based on our recommendation. read more

First time back to Zeitgeist restaurant in three years and for the most part I was not impressed. Of course the ambiance is very nice and the service was good. The biggest disappointment was with the quality and price of the food. Four of us went, we ordered burgers and sandwiches, an extra salad and soup, 2 glasses of wine and a non-alcoholic beverage. With the cost of the food and their 20% "wellness charge"(but not a tip) + a 20% tip, our bill was $170! It was shocking, especially since the food was good but not great. The burgers were advertised as 1/3 pound but they cooked down to about a 1/4 pound burger with a very soggy bun. The other sandwiches were good but again not great and the salad was basic. The wild rice soup was good but not the best I've ever had. Over-all this was over-priced for the quality of food. The menu is also very basic. read more

After a crappy day at work on the road in Duluth I was relieved to find some refuge at Zeitgeist Arts Cafe. My colleague and I decided to camp at the bar. The cafe has a modern clean look that pairs well with their Northern hospitality. Looking over the menu we decided to go with the $25 price fix menu of four courses. I liked that our bartender did not rush the meal and consulted us before putting the order for the next course Additional bonus: Tuesday night is half price bottle of wine night. We started with a cold beet and orange soup purée & a warm creamy roasted onion soup. Both were excellent - the beet purée was tasty and thick, the flavors fresh and bright. Our next course was salad which included a baguette with goat cheese - it looked delicious but was gone so quickly that I missed a sample /-: Our main courses included a broiled halibut and duck. The halibut was a bit dry but the duck was exceptional. We concluded with a berry cream dessert with Ginger snaps and some chocolate cake. Overall a terrific dining experience. Food portions were on the money, presentation creative, and combination of flavors unique. The next time I am in Duluth I will drop in again. Just a short review because we only had a few things off the menu last night. We had the assorted cheese plate (served with toasted baugette slices) and the steamed green lip mussels. For dessert we selected the Creme Caramel....I had a Sazarac and Leigh had an Air Mail to drink. As usual the food, drink and service was great. The only downfall of the night (our fault) was we decided to sit downstairs and the only table open was across from the kitchen. Not the best ambience for a romantic meal, but it was fun watching the action in the kitchen. Zeitgeist continues to be one of our "go to" places in town. Bought burger from them before covid. Decided to pick some up again. Had ordered several times in 2019 at the same price so like pre covid usual I didn't bother with the menu. Just wanted 3 burgers and fries to go. Gave card and they walked it over to the till. Didn't get receipt in take out bag. Food was burnt, burgers and onion and the fries were awful. Bill was $70 for 3 peoples terrible food. Turns out on top of the new service charge(which this was take out but whatever) they charge $5 extra just to get fries with the burger now. $15 a burnt burger and $5 fries. Minnesota Burger Reporter Kawikamedia checked out the Zeitgast Arts Cafe in, part of Zeitgeist Arts, a combination cafe, arts cinema and theater in the downtown neighborhood that is rapidly becoming Duluth's "Art Sector". He and his pals took in "The Skin I Live In" which he pronounced to be the strangest movie he had seen in a long time, and then popped into the cafe for a bite. The cafe has a large bar, with windows overlooking Superior Street, with the splendor of the ediface of the former Hotel Duluth in view. Kawikamedia had the grilled Angus burger, with melted cheddar, dressed with lettuce, tomato, onions, and mayo, plopped on toasted bun and accompanied by pommes frites. (I never knew there was anything "French" about Duluth, except for the founding father). He pronounced the burger and fries as A-OK! read more

I honestly have nothing to complain about this place. From the second I entered the hospitality was awesome! I had their scallop dinner and it was great! The risotto was cooked to perfection not too soft and not too hard. The sweet dressing was a great way to balance the charred asparagus and ofcourse the scallops melted in your mouth!
