My wife and I went there for dinner. I ordered king size prim rib cooked medium rare. My wife ordered a sirloin steak cooked medium rare. The prime rib came out raw and queen sized. My wife's sirloin came out well done. She sent hers back and it came out cooked the correct way. I told the waitress she brought me the wrong sized and cooked wrong prime rib. She told me she would have mine cooked a little more. I said I wanted a king size cooked the correct way. She took my plate and came back a couple minutes later with the same queen sized prime rib but cooked to medium. I tried it but it was like chewing rubber and it tasted rancid. The best part of this visit was the service. The staff here is great. Everything else... leaves something to be desired. Walking up the stairs with carpet older than my grandparents, I was surprised by the vintage decor of the Hammond House. It's not old by design, it's just old. Like I said, the service was great. Our waitress knew the menu well, was able to answer all of our questions, and took great care of the table. She quickly had the order into the kitchen. The salads were out moments later and they were respectable. The onions are overwhelming, so cut them in moderately. The main course comes out on a rickety stainless steel cart that looks like it did bedside service in the Korean War. The prime rib was cooked well, but it's was a little tough and it lacked seasoning. I had to go back to really it three times to give it some flavor. We were near Duluth one night and looking for someplace to eat - something different and my husband was requesting steak. Every place I pulled up in Duluth looked meh (and touristy) so I expanded my search and came across Hammond Steak House. BINGO. Oh, goodness I did good this time! First, this place is impossible to miss. You'd hit it if you came off the bridge in a snow storm - right smack dab at the end. The restaurant is located upstairs - I am not sure if I saw an elevator so beware there may be stairs to climb. Inside the place sorta has the feel of a northwoods Perkins? Sorta woodsy, sorta diner-ish? Sorta weird, but I loved it. The waitresses were salty and had probably worked there for years. The sign on the bathroom stall door read "Lock is Broke"- I guess it won't be paying for dinner! So much charm, however, including the regulars. Dinner. I see comments about it being expensive which I don't agree with. Maybe expensive for Superior? I had the Prime Rib special and if I recall the small cut was $15.99 - on a Saturday night that seems more than fair. Came with a salad and I chose au gratin potatoes (which were very good!). The Prime Rib was cooked well though it could have been seasoned a bit more. Plus a bread basked that I tried to avoid but failed. Oh, and I had a Spotted Cow, of course! When in Wisconsin.... This place is very old fashioned, they literally don't even have a cocktail menu. But I kind of liked that, it made me feel like I was back in the 70s. Also, the food was really good and affordable. Recommendation Is what brought me to this place Service was lacking Had to go up to Duluth for work. Buddy suggested I try this place out. Ordered a beer when I sat down and payed cash for it. I think they have an upstairs and downstairs. All that seemed to be available was the upstairs when I was there on a Wednesday night for work. Service was friendly, but not very efficient. They strive to be an upscale supper club and they price themselves as such. Sat at the upstairs bar as I was travelling solo. Felt like the Duluth equivalent of the Cherokee. Ordered the entree of stuffed shrimp which comes with hash browns and a side salad pre-entree. Bartender said there would be a dressing tray with my side salad which never came around until I asked for it about 10 minutes later after the salad came out. Basic as basic can get on the salad. Think they may have just bought the bagged salad from the grocery store and poured a fifth of of it on my plate. Entree came out - solid three stars. Always appreciate the open kitchen, but the shrimp were nothing that blew me away. Seemed like all stuffing and no shrimp. Bartender never asked me if I wanted ketchup for my hash browns and never made any available. Had other stuff to do after finishing my meal - asked for my bill. It came out with the one beer I had already paid cash for. Pointed it out and it was corrected. But, three strikes and you are out Hammond Lounge! I had dinner at the Hammond, Superior 7/26/2019. Ordered an old fashioned and they make a good one! Appetizers were walleye fingers and french onion soup. Walleye was average and french onion soup was a disaster. We sent it back because it was missing the cheese normally associated with the soup and didn't have a crouton or french bread at all. Waitress kindly removed it from our bill and mentioned that they need to teach the cook how to make it. Steaks were above average and well prepared. Had leftovers for breakfast the next day! It was a good piece of beef. Don't know if there are better steakhouses in Superior, but next time I'll go across the bridge. read more

This is an old school 'Sconnie supper club type place. The decor is old fashioned and it is part of the charm. Inside the dining room is a birch tree and in the corner a gazebo in which you can dine. Sure some of it is super outdated- it's better that way! There is a bar up stairs and downstairs. No need to put on a tie or bother with a dress, although flip flops would still look too casual- this place falls somewhere in between. Don't bother with the salad. Have a cocktail instead. The drinks are strong and the prime rib thick as a tire except way more delicious. The lake trout was pretty frickin' good too. Our service was friendly, personable and timely. This is the most underrated restaurant in Duluth/Superior. 90% of the time, I order the Walleye and it is always excellent--better than some of the nearby more popular, and more expensive restaurants in the area. The exterior of the building was great, but the restaurant itself was in need of a decor update, and there was just way to much stuff on the table before we even got out drinks, but that is all trivial stuff which we would have over looked if the food was better. My partner had the sirloin steak (each about 8 ounces is my guess) and 3 very large shrimp. 4-5 ounces or so. Accompanied by a fresh bread basket (white and pumpernickel, soft buns, various crackers and butter. Choice of salads. (ours was a simple, but passable Cesar). Choice of Baked, fries or my favorite house made hash browns. The place is not fancy by any stretch. Much of the wait staff is well past 50. Surprisingly fast and efficient.. Perhaps too efficient, not very friendly. But we were there to eat, not to make friends with the staff. I would have been happy with every part of this meal had I paid 50% more in a different room. The Hammond is known for some pretty good food, a bit pricey, but delicious. I always get a steak, and it is always cooked to my likings, never any complaints here! The staff is usually on the older side, and have been serving here, probably forever. It makes the service part, almost like being on autopilot, so it is not "out of this world" by any means, but it is pretty decent! They have a pretty small menu, but what they do have, is pretty good. They do a really good job at catering to large groups, my sister had her wedding rehearsal dinner here, and they handled all of us perfectly! I enjoy coming here with my family, it is located right off the bridge, so if you are coming from Duluth, and looking for a place to enjoy a nice dinner at, look no further. Me and a friend brought our mothers to the steak house for Mother's Day. those Stairs are dangerous for elderly especially those with sever disabilities but our mothers made it without problems. The service wasn't very good and the food was definitely not worth the price. I would strongly recommend finding a different place for a nice dinner. From the moment we sat down we felt like we were being pressured to order our meal. We did not have a chance to relax and have a conversation with our daughter. We get to see her so seldom and we felt that we were being pushed as if the waitress was in a hurry to get home. We all ordered the prime rib, my daughter had a baked potato and we had hash browns. The baked potato was very hot but the hash browns were warm at best. All of the prime ribs were also just warm and although I know that prime rib is somewhat fatty these were very fatty.
