Had to stop in Staunton for an appointment, had some spare time and decided to search for a bakery not expecting anything good since it's such a small town. I was well surprised, and shocked when I came across blackbird bakery. Quality food you'd get in big cities or even better. The croissants were actually crunchy and had all the delicious buttery layers! I've had croissants in France, and Blackbird's croissants are just as good. Such a gem of a bakery, service was prompt and friendly. Although not close to me at all it is well worth the drive. Would definitely recommend to anyone, don't hesitate to go out of your way and give them a try!

They were so busy Saturday, I'm glad we found a table. Such a comfortable place for lunch. I had the half & half, TCB sandwich and salad with avocado, nuts ( I-think it's the Farmhouse salad). It was all so delicious.

Very chill vibe if that's what you're after. More than that, they have excellent coffee and baked goods. The Lemon Turnover was a crowd favorite and the German 5 grain bread was scrumptious. The Bear claw was subtle not cloyingly sweet.

Blackbird Bakery is an absolute jewel in downtown Staunton. Whether you are stopping by for pastries or lunch or Saturday brunch, or just picking up a loaf of freshly baked bread or goodies to take home- you can't go wrong. The pastry items vary daily, and if you get lucky, you might catch a special (fancy!) dessert or some fresh macarons! Lunch menu features soups, sandwiches, and salads. Brunch on Saturdays offers a couple of extra menu selections, including an amazing Croque Madame. I honestly cannot say enough good things about Blackbird.

Great Bahmi! Great place to eat! Friendly service! Great lunch menu don't forget to check out the pastries!

Half a salad that fills about 2/3 of the plate and half a California club on homemade bread.

Wonderful sweets, soups, salads and sandwiches. A little more upscale than your typical bakery.

The chain as a whole can only be so "special" considering what they are trying to do. I go to Subway when I want an average sandwich and no surprises. There is nothing special, and nothing offensive. I have never had a great sandwich at a Subway, but I have also never had a bad one. So this will always be a place to go for the comfort of knowing what's going to be inside of the paper wrapper. That is the function of American fast food chains, the best of them produce the same thing in every town across the country. The bad one's try too hard, have too many fad things on the menu, and make unforced errors. This Subway like most, gave me what I expected, at a Subway price. The added bonus were the nice young locals working during our visit. We live here now, we will be back over the years. I hope they keep steady.

Visits in JUL-AUG-OCT 2025…read more We moved into town this summer. Our realtor provided gift certificate as a closing congratulations. After we came the first visit I wanted to take my time, have a few more visits before I wrote. My rating of 3 (okay) in this case think of it as an academic C, a passing grade but certainly room for improvement. Rooster's Pub is okay, the food is okay, the service is okay, it is clean. If you are looking for a bar food meal this is an okay place to choose. You can stop here, disregard the rest and make your choice. I suspect that Rooster's is popular locally (and has some high ratings) is familiarity, and a customer base that hasn't widely traveled, there is nothing wrong with that. I am comfortable saying that this place is also likely a good bar, for those interested in that environment. It is not quite for me (us) as a restaurant. We have only been during the lunch hours. I have never owned a bar or restaurant. I worked in them at various levels earlier in life. I acknowledge how tough it is to be a bar that also has standout food. In my experience that is rather rare. I know that when a bar does get that balance right, they have a limited menu. They make a few things and make them well. A full menu is always going to have to carry some amount of frozen "Sysco" things dropped into hot oil. Our meals, I have had two okay tenderloins and one burger, my wife two fish (slightly overdone) meals, and one burger. My wish is for continued success for Rooster's, it is a fine place for others. As currently functioning it is not a place for me. This is also okay if the oil is always fresh, and the cook is attentive and pulls things soon enough to guard color/texture and the cooking finishes during delivery to table. On another note it seems that in our 3 visits, things are cooked hard and fast but then sit in the window, cooling until delivered lukewarm and past that "golden moment". A few lines about the fries. People do like them, I however do not prefer house cut fries. I think the basic restaurant frozen fry, well executed, is an easy win. Our's have been dark and soggy on arrival. I did get the tots on the middle visit (better), had forgotten the fry defeciency and got them this last time. My wife, a Midwestern lover of all things potato, left nearly half of her order. Overall plating has been a bit haphazard, not expecting a cooking show, but I do appreciate something that arrives looking intentional. There just doesn't seem to be a level of care applied to the meals that have come to our table (a note on that at the end). We have only had the same two front of house workers. They are polite (maybe stiffly and overly so), they get the order right and they accomplish the mission. However is feels a bit like a "transaction", which I understand it is, the customers aren't your friend. I don't think it's just us, there doesn't seem to be any warmth with anyone that comes in (even what I presume are regulars). If there is a scale with annoyed that I exist on one end, and a warm hug on the other, the service here is much closer to the left hashmark. A final note about my meals here. If the gaps in execution are some message that I am not worthy of a best effort, or simply not welcome- message received.

My brother and I stopped during a Route 66 road trip expecting to grab lunch, browse a few antique booths, and continue on to St. Louis. Four hours later, we were still there. The giant pink elephant and fiberglass figures outside immediately grab your attention, but that's only the beginning. Inside the former Livingston High School, you'll find 30,000 square feet of antiques, collectibles, vintage treasures, Route 66 memorabilia, toys, advertising signs, home décor, and enough nostalgia to keep you wandering for hours. One of my favorite things about Pink Elephant is that it appeals to far more than antique shoppers. Even if you don't buy a thing, there are countless photo opportunities, fun roadside attractions, a retro diner, and a fantastic candy and fudge shop. We had lunch at the Twistee Treat Diner, where I enjoyed a burger, onion rings, and a salted caramel milkshake that was worth every calorie. The diner has a fun retro vibe and was packed during our visit. Before leaving, we stopped by the Mother Road Fudge Factory and Candy Shop. The homemade fudge was fresh, creamy, and some of the best I've ever tasted. What truly makes this place special, though, is the Pickerill family. Owners Tonia and Wayne clearly love what they do. Their enthusiasm, friendliness, and passion for creating a memorable experience are evident throughout the property. You can tell they genuinely enjoy meeting travelers and sharing this unique Route 66 destination with others. As a photographer, I left with over 100 photos. As a traveler, I left with great memories. As a Route 66 enthusiast, I left knowing this is a stop I'll recommend to everyone. Whether you're traveling Route 66, looking for a fun family outing, searching for antiques, craving homemade fudge, or simply want a memorable roadside adventure, Pink Elephant Antique Mall is absolutely worth the stop. My advice? Allow much more time than you think you'll need.

In addition to the elephant, you'll see a tall Trump, Ken doll and Alvin & the Chipmunks. Plus, the Red Barons plane, Shoney's Big Boy, a huge globe and two vintage police cars. It's junky, but don't let that discourage you from entering the mall. Once you walk past a miniature Lincoln Memorial and enter the mall, you will be overwhelmed. There will be aisle after aisle of shelves filled with clutter and treasures. You'll have to be patient to look beyond all the clutter to find those hidden treasures. I have no patience, so went into the other room and did all my shopping there. In the room to the right, you'll find fudge, mugs, caps, stickers, magnets and bulk candy. You know, all the typical souvenir junk. It was a fun area to browse after dining next door at, Twistee Treat Diner. I wear a lot of caps and found a Route 66 themed one to wear while we all celebrate its centennial. I also got a couple Route 66 lapel pins to add to my collection. I meant to buy a Route 66 mug, but I set it down to look at another item and forgot to pick it up, again. I'm bummed, I really liked the mug. The service in the mall retail area was not as good as at the diner next door. It was still decent, but it was minimal at best. The young girl who rang me out was on her cell phone when I walked up to the register. She laid it down to process my sale and I could see that she was face timing with a gentleman. She didn't even hang-up, she just had him wait. Beware, the mall is very MAGA and they do not hide it. If that bothers you or if you prefer not to support a MAGA business, you may want to skip shopping here.
