Had to stop in Staunton for an appointment, had some spare time and decided to search for a bakery not expecting anything good since it's such a small town. I was well surprised, and shocked when I came across blackbird bakery. Quality food you'd get in big cities or even better. The croissants were actually crunchy and had all the delicious buttery layers! I've had croissants in France, and Blackbird's croissants are just as good. Such a gem of a bakery, service was prompt and friendly. Although not close to me at all it is well worth the drive. Would definitely recommend to anyone, don't hesitate to go out of your way and give them a try!

    Half & Half

They were so busy Saturday, I'm glad we found a table. Such a comfortable place for lunch. I had the half & half, TCB sandwich and salad with avocado, nuts ( I-think it's the Farmhouse salad). It was all so delicious.

Very chill vibe if that's what you're after. More than that, they have excellent coffee and baked goods. The Lemon Turnover was a crowd favorite and the German 5 grain bread was scrumptious. The Bear claw was subtle not cloyingly sweet.

Blackbird Bakery is an absolute jewel in downtown Staunton. Whether you are stopping by for pastries or lunch or Saturday brunch, or just picking up a loaf of freshly baked bread or goodies to take home- you can't go wrong. The pastry items vary daily, and if you get lucky, you might catch a special (fancy!) dessert or some fresh macarons! Lunch menu features soups, sandwiches, and salads. Brunch on Saturdays offers a couple of extra menu selections, including an amazing Croque Madame. I honestly cannot say enough good things about Blackbird.

Great Bahmi! Great place to eat! Friendly service! Great lunch menu don't forget to check out the pastries!

Half a salad that fills about 2/3 of the plate and half a California club on homemade bread.

Wonderful sweets, soups, salads and sandwiches. A little more upscale than your typical bakery.

Pro tip: definitely check their hours before you go--and honestly, just plan your day around it because it's that good. I was expecting your typical little coffee-and-sandwich spot, but it completely exceeded my expectations. They have a couple of parking spaces behind the building, and if those are full, there's a free lot about 500 feet down the road. It was pretty busy at lunchtime. You order at the counter, and they bring everything to your table. There's a mix of indoor and outdoor seating in various sizes, and the decor is adorable. I especially loved the maps--they make great conversation starters. I noticed several tables pointing out places they'd visited and swapping travel stories. The menu has a nice variety. I ordered the chicken salad on ciabatta with a side salad. The chicken salad had a strong dill flavor that I really enjoyed, and the ciabatta was perfectly fresh--not too tough. Next time, I'll probably pick a different side since the salad was basically just lettuce. If there was any dressing, it was super light, so I ended up adding some of the lettuce into my sandwich. The surprise standout, though, was the lavender lemonade--a total sleeper hit. It was scorching hot that day, and I wanted something refreshing, so I ordered it on a whim. Honestly, it was the best lemonade I've ever had. I don't usually find myself making a special trip to a café just for lemonade, but here I am. I'm not sure if it's seasonal, but I really hope it sticks around.

The building we found for sale was the old antique Dime Store dated back to the early 1900s. This building has original floors that Mark had sanded and brought back to life with stain and varnish. The ceilings have been refreshed with paint and the upstairs has 4 apartments that have been remodeled, yet kept with an antique look. In addition to the 2,000 sq feet of space upstairs, there is also 2,000 sq feet on the first floor where his computer business would be. “That’s too much space to just have computers; we need a coffee shop in town, so let’s have half the space for a coffee shop,” said Mom (Kim). As a middle school teacher in this town, Mrs. Henderson knew there was a place needed in the community where kids and elderly people could gather, play games, and socialize. The only unfortunate event is that this place does not have a drive-thru. However, you will enjoy the nostalgic feeling as you walk into the place, and choose a cozy spot to sit, whether it be in a window seat, on a recliner, or at a round or square, short or tall table. And the coffee is bought from a local roasting coffee shop, Black Rabbit, in Hillsboro, IL. We cannot forget to mention the tasty donuts that are purchased by our famous local bakery, B&K Bakery, in Mt Olive, IL.

The furniture is functional, might not even all match...all good. Route 138 Cafe is that second kind of place. The name alone, is so plain sense Midwest, practical. It not some whimsical thought excercise like Nutmeg Hutch or some such. There are no fancy uniforms, the staff might have on T-shirts from the restaurant. We have had no issues with any of the staff, they have been nothing but pleasant, effective and welcoming. We have been here a few times now since moving to the area, this was the first time for lunch. I had a breaded pork tenderloin sandwich with seasoned fries, my wife got a BLT with same. Do splurge for the "special" fries vs. the standard crinkle cut. Somehow crinkle cut fries take me back to elementary school, and no matter how hot and great they may be in this present time, they take me back to luke warm unsalted punishment on a plastic tray. There is nothing fancy about anything I have eaten here. It's not perfect, what is- it is also obviously put together with care. That goes a long way. I have had beautiful, expensive meals and left hungry and full of regret. We left Saturday afternoon feeling full, comfortable and starting to fit in to our "fly-over" retirement.
