We wanted to go to a different restaurant, but choice one and two were both closed on a Tuesday. So I have to say thumbs up for being open. The wait time for making 3 sandwiches was extensive, and we considered leaving. I looked around at all of the tables and only two people out of 15 were eating. Our food finally arrived and I must say my ahi sandwich was good, while my mom liked the Cuban. My husband was disappointed in the pork belly sandwich. It was very sloppy and the "Cole slaw" was just shredded cabbage. The pork was not that great either. I think they need to work on their speed or plan their time better. An absolute must-stop in Wallace, both for atmosphere and for the food itself. It's where I take friends from out of town for great food, drinks, and to experience the charm of Wallace. I especially recommend the mushroom app, and, as silly as it sounds, the cheeseburger -- it's the best burger I think I've ever had. Their pasta dishes are always a rich and delicious dinner. Would love to give this cute little place a good review but we were never served. I have never been turned around and not even been given an option to wait for a table. Came in with a group of 6 (which isn't huge, right?) and we're told that we just couldn't eat there at all without a reservation. Blackboard was pretty much the only option we had for dinner on our first night in Wallace and the only seating was at the bar directly facing the kitchen. Surprise...surprise...the service was excellent, the food was good and the entertainment of watching the dance of the staff keeping up with a very busy crowd was delightful. We asked the staff at our hotel where she thought we could get a good meal in the area. She told us that the Blackboard Cafe had the best steak around. We decided to give it a try and we are happy to say that it was absolutely delicious!! Would not have thought that we would have a gourmet dinner in such a small town!! The waitress said her favorite dish was the Lemon Pesto Pasta!! TO DIE FOR!! I am so glad I ordered it!! YUMMMM!!! When staying in Coeur D'Alene, we decided to check out Wallace, ID. Having lunch at the Blackboard Cafe, pretty much made the whole trip there worth it!! It's a small place with one server for the tables inside, the bar and a table or two outside on the sidewalk. Our server was amazing! Hubby and I walked in as a busload of people were just finishing their meals, so in fairness, she should have been tired and cranky, but she was neither of those things. She handled herself as a true professional and even made small talk with us and had a smile on her face the entire time we were there! The inside decor is quirky and fun which is perfect for me. They had a chalkboard wall with amazing drawings and quotes and had an interesting selection of movies playing silently on the small tv's in the restaurant. Other than having to drink out of mason jars (I can't wait for that fad to go away!), I liked that they served the food on a mix of china pieces. It adds a nice touch of color and fun! Hubby and I shared the Mesquite turkey sandwich with chips and when we saw the portion size, we were very glad that we shared. It was an excellent sandwich and I would love to try more of their menu or the Italian menu served in the evenings. This was top notch food! Just because we were enjoying ourselves so much, we decided to top off our visit with a chocolate mint shake. Perfection! I would love to have this place in my neighborhood in Kansas City! read more

What a lovely dining experience. We started with the lobster bisque and split the blacken shrimp grilled sandwich and the summer salad. Portions were more than ample. The flavors were just wonderful. The food overall was fairly good. My wife had the Idaho pineapple glazed trout - not the best and she does not recommend it. She prefers the taste of fresh trout, not pineapple. I had the lamb shank - the flavor was very good, but the shank was small. Our young son had the buttered noodles with lobster on top. Very buttery and he felt a bit nauseous a while later. Food prices were on the high side for the portions received and the overall basic atmosphere of a simple cafe. Service was just okay. We were seated immediately without reservations before the crowd arrived, although it was a basic cafe/market style place. It was a warm day outside and they lacked sufficient AC, so it was uncomfortably warm inside on the kitchen side. Our server was on the slow side, took 15 minutes to serve my bottled beer. She also only brought us two glasses of water when there were three of us. After 10 minutes we had to request another glass. We finally received our food about 45 minutes later. It took us about 30 minutes to finish our meal and drinks. 5 minutes after we received our bill and we were just about to get up and leave, another server came to us and told us there were others waiting for the table who had a reservation. Having gone to thousands of restaurants over my lifetime, I have never experienced that type of pushiness in any restaurant. If I didn't know any better, I'd say it was typical of a New York style, hurry up, eat, pay and get out atmosphere. We will not be back. read more

I don't like to leave negative reviews ever. This place is a cute little restaurant located in a quaint little town, Wallace. We stopped by on our way back to Montana ahead of our flight back to Texas. The food was good but I have never in my whole life felt so uncomfortable in any other place. I do not know for certain if the staff and other customers were staring at us because my fiancé and I both had our face masks on and literally no one else in town did or if it was because my fiancé is a darker skin tone than literally everyone else in the town. Either way, we are well traveled and no one had ever made us feel so unwelcome. I know it's human nature to stare at someone who looks different, but it's rude. read more

We chose to stop in historic Wallace on our way home from Yellowstone. The Blackboard Cafe had an amazing menu so we chose this restaurant. It was crowded on a Wednesday (being one of the few restaurants in town open) and it was worth the wait! The staff were polite even though they were slammed. If you're in Wallace or even driving by, this place is a must-visit. I ordered the French Dip Sandwich and it is hands-down the best I've ever had. The meat is perfect, sauce delicious and the au jus was more like a French onion soup. I also upgraded to a side Cesar which was loaded with cheese, just the way I like. What an awesome experience! We were driving through and looking for a quick place to grab a bite and we stumbled on this cafe. What luck! I had a French dip that hosted a large chunk of tender rib eye and came with a bowl of onion soup. The soup almost stole the show because of it's distinct flavor. It had a familiar flavor that was unusual to French onion soup, maybe sage, but worked fantastic. My wife had a turkey sandwich that had a bacon type sauce. I don't remember what it was called, but it was delicious. The bread wasn't too heavy and the sauces are unique and tasty. The room is small and decorated with Alice and wonderland pictures. We were driving through as we headed home from Yellowstone. We were starving after driving for hours and looked this place up on Yelp. Our socks were knocked off!!! The cafe shares space with an espresso place, a bookstore and a clothing shop. My husband ordered the meatball sandwich and I ordered the chicken schnitzel. Both were AMAZING! I travel a great deal and every now and then you run across a gem and this is one of them. Small little local place that is absolutely amazing. Not much room here, so unless you come early you better get a Rez. But it's so good you should consider ditching your pals if there is one seat open at the bar. It's been a few years since we have been here. In fact they have moved a couple blocks over since our last visit. Great!!! The Reuben and the Cuban are still outstanding. The service is still good. Yelp has failed me....... stopped by this place on our way thru town because the yelp reviews were A+ While I loved the setting & location the food was less than mediocre. Most people in our group ordered sandwiches & all left disappointed. The lunch meat used is just processed pre sliced low end lunch meat, the cheese (Cheddar they say) was also processed presliced fake cheese. What a great opportunity it's this place has to serve up proper deli style sandwiches. Carved meats, REAL cheese (like the stuff they are selling in their grab & go coolers). My kids both ordered the toasted cheese sandwiches & wouldn't touch them - The processed plastic cheese melted out of the sandwiches & made the entire thing stick to their plate. My order came out wrong & no efforts were made to correct it. This place is charging 5 star prices for 1 star quality. Travelers beware this place felt like a place they made look really cute to bring the tourists in & then they charge you $15 bucks for poor quality food. read more

Umm, walked in the door on a Tuesday at 1215 only to be greeted by waitress telling us they are closed for a little bit and to come back later??? Then restated as we turned around to walk out (as she was shooing is out the door..), "we're closed until further notice, yeah." She could not get us out the door fast enough. This was 75 minutes after they opened for service and had most of the tables seated and eating WTH! Stopped by Saturday the 1st of September only to find the town slammed and no place to park (hauling a 40ft 5th wheel). Figured we would try again on our way back from Yellowstone, and were able to find a parking space finally, only to get that reception when we walked in the door - after being on road for last 5 hrs. Guess we will take this place off our list of meal stops. Very disappointed!! read more

Fine food delivered by arrogant servers. I've had better service in truck stops. I asked to taste two wines and my server didn't know which was which and when asked said "I don't know."Second, I ask for a salad? "Greens", a Cesar is delivered With vinaigrette. No warning from server that recipe has been changed from menu, and finally, desert. I asked about desert and was brought hand written menu. The server abruptly drops it and walks away. I said "Miss" and her partner shows up and asks "If I can read It?" Her hand writing was fine and of course I could read it. But he reads three items turns and walks away . I was only going to ask about a few details. Busy or not-poor service. Bottom line- poor review, less check to owner, and 1/2 tip to server. I guess they don't care. Blackboard Cafe was recommended to us by a local. We had a large group and they were accommodating of that. The sandwich was good (I had the turkey) But I docked stars because: 2 people ordered the Black & Blue burger, but got the normal cheeseburger. It took them a few bites to realize there were pickles and raw onion, which wasn't listed on the Black & Blue. They asked about it to let her know their cook had messed up both orders and the waitress seemed indifferent to them getting her wrong order. One person is intolerant to onions and made that clear when they ordered. She tasted onions on her sandwich and when she said something, the waitress insisted it didn't have onions. Even if they sandwich didn't have onions, if the cook didn't clean the utensils or grill after cooking onions, it will cause problems. Because the waitress was so insistent it wasn't an issue, she continued eating, and did get sick that night so that confirmed onions were there. Also, we had to ask for napkins and silverware. Sandwiches might be finger food but napkins are pretty standard to have when you eat. And lastly, for $12, the sandwiches are over priced. They were good, but considering the size and limited options for sides, $12 is pretty steep. read more

Went for hubbys birthday What a dissapointment! For the ptice they charge they need to improve their presentation. My cup of soup was served in a bowl, that made the portion look very small, the soup was cold and what i would expect for cauliflower soup. It was more of a sauce than soup. I am gluten free, so i asked if vegies or rice could be substituted for pasta? No only potatoes. My meal came soaked in some kind grease saucepotatoes were pan fried, and they had the texture of being frozen. The chicken was a cheap piece of frozen meat you would get out of a Costco bag. The waitress was new and suffering from foot pain and did not know anything. she could use some lessons on how to be more personable. Hubby had the rib-eye, nothing special, very fatty, Needless to say, next time we come to lookout pass to ski, we will go somewhere else for dinner. read more
