Since 1932 Black's is the oldest continuously run family BBQ restaurant in Texas. They have branched off to different locations but this one in Lockhart is the original. You can feel the history when you walk in. It's set up family style buffet upon entering. You serve yourself with sides and desserts and then make your way to the meat counter where the delicious choices await. Fellow Yelpers agree that the jalapeño cheese sausage was good so I had to try a link. It was very juicy and flavorful. My husband and I decided to share a huge beef dino rib. It was fall off the bone tender. The rub they used was a little more salty than I like but my husband liked it quite a bit. We ran out of room but next time time we're definitely trying the brisket. For the sides the mac and cheese was nice and creamy, cream corn was ok but nothing special, and the pecan cobbler was a definite winner. Skip the corn bread muffin, both the jalapeño and regular muffin were dry and flavorless. The staff working here are friendly and helpful with suggestions. Ok, at first it was a bit intimidating but they know how to get people through the line. You have to know what sides you want, and desserts too!!! Then choose your meats by the pound for your whole family; then your drinks, and that's it!! You gather your white bread, pickles, onion, plastic cutlery, napkins and salt and pepper and bbq sauce is on the table . Now, you look at everyone at your table because from then on, you're going to have your eyes closed in ecstasy! The sides compliment the meats if you figure out how much of each to put in your mouth at a time. You gotta eat fast before it gets cold, but that's not a problem at all. So before you know it, you're balancing the sweet with the savory with a mouthful of peach cobbler! read more

OMG, So freaking good! I stopped by while I was in Lockhart and stood in line to order a lean brisket sandwich with potato salad and a drink to go. The sandwich had onions, pickles and bbq sauce. The flavor was so good! When I got to the end of the sandwich that's when I tasted the burnt ends... Oh... My! It was on another level. I'm glad I wasn't driving because I had to close my eyes and chew and enjoy all the flavors of that bark. I literally closed my eyes and chewed and enjoyed the flavors! So good! The potato salad was excellent as well... I'm very happy that I stopped by. It's definitely a place I'd recommend to take a drive. I Iive in San Antonio and was in the area for work but I would drive the hour and a half just to eat at this historic place and I'd recommend anyone to take the drive as well! Excellent barbecue; one of the best anywhere. I'm partial to Lockhart style barbecue because that is where I first had Cen-Tex style, actually at Kreuz Market, as a student at University of Texas at Austin in the late 1970's. Black's is still great, and there are Black family places in Austin now; equally good. Lockhart also has Smitty's, and Kreuz; both excellent. Other good spots in Central Texas are Louie Mueller in Taylor, City Market in Luling, Franklin and La Barbecue in Austin, True in Marble Falls and Coopers in Llano. RIP to Miss Mae's barbecue in Wimberley, one of the best and my recent favorite. Great barbecue is a little bit of Heaven. Central Texas has it in spades! I now live in Cambridge, MA, and enjoy excellent Texas style barbecue at Blue Ribbon in Newton (best burnt ends I have had), and Redbones in Somerville! read more

Disappointing experience, unfortunately. Food servers weren't rude but def not welcoming. Man cutting meat acted almost offended that my 2 companions and I only asked for a 1/4 lb of brisket (we had already been to multiple bbq places and sampled a lot of bbq) asking "who else is eating brisket?" I said all of us. He insisted on showing us how much meat that is as if we weren't aware, then acted annoyed when we confirmed that's exactly what we wanted. Sides are B tier. Made well with decent flavor, but not mind blowing . BBQ is F tier and probably the worst in central Texas I've had. Flavor is generic. Sausage texture was loose and crumbly/mushy, brisket and ribs were both dry and chewy. Took one bite of each and had to leave them on my plate. Hard to believe this is one of the proclaimed kings of bbq in the bbq capital. Needs severe improvement to meet the expectations of its reputation. read more

Great BBQ in the BBQ capitol of Texas, Lockhart, Texas! There are several to choose from, but IMO, I'd say Black's has been the best. This place has been around for ages and it's evident as you walk through its entrance. Their walls are covered with pictures and articles from decades past. From U.S. presidents, to famous athletes and Hollywood celebrities. Black's Barbecue has fed them all. We ordered their moist brisket, original sausage, and garlic sausage. They had good, smoky flavor as one would expect and it wasn't too overpowering. Some people like it extremely smokey, but that can detract from the natural flavors of the meat. You can't go wrong on their sides either. Jennifer did mention their house-made whole pickles were the best! Unfortunately, as you can see, our son, Owen did not get to partake as he was knocked out from our car ride that began in Austin. One thing I did notice was that they actually sell bumper stickers for $1.99 as opposed to giving them away. Coopers BBQ from Burnet, TX gives them away like candy and I placed that on our cargo carrier. How else would you get free advertising? With the help of past happy customers of course! This place gets written up in Texas Monthly's list of the best barbecue restaurants in Texas every four years. Been wanting to try it for a very long time. My wife and I were camping at Lockhart State Park, which I picked because I wanted to see Lockhart (the barbecue capital of Texas) and finally get to eat at Black's. I enjoyed it, but I certainly wasn't blown away. We live in Tyler, Texas, and Country Tavern, in Kilgore, which is only a 20 minute drive away, has the best barbecue I've ever had in my life, especially the baby back ribs. At Black's, my wife and I had brisket, pork ribs, potato salad, and pinto beans. We enjoyed the brisket. It was moist, tender, and had a nice flavor. The ribs were okay, but definitely needed a little sauce to enhance the flavor. I also thought the meal was overly pricey. I don't know when Texas barbecue got so damn expensive. Maybe Black's charges so much, in part, because it is something of an historic landmark. Or maybe they just think their barbecue is that great. It was good, and I would go back to Black's, but I was really hoping to be wowed. I wasn't. I find it interesting, that Kilgore's Country Tavern, which is superior to Black's, never makes Texas Monthly's top 50 list, while Black's and many others always do. We made a stop at Black's on our pilgrimage of Texas BBQ to compare it to all of the other famous spots. I can say confidently that Black's BBQ in Lockhart is the best BBQ in Texas, and the best Brisket in Texas BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS. Everything from the time you wait in line to the moment the brisket literally renders in your mouth is incredible. Since our initial trip years ago we make a detour here every chance we get. Having been to the major BBQ cities in the U.S. and trying the famous spots, I would say this isn't only my favorite Texas BBQ, but my favorite BBQ overall. I've been dreaming about stopping in Lockhart TX for some BBQ and finally did recently on a trip from Dallas to Port Aransas. This is the place to get BBQ in this city since it's been open since 1932 and has been in the same family ever since. Anything and everything you get here will be amazing. However, it's not the best I've ever had. Maybe it was just the day I went, but the meats could've been more flavorful and juicer to me. One minor thing is that I also didn't like how they only have one BBQ sauce. They're known for their Giant Beef Ribs so you gotta get one of those. The brisket is pretty delicious. The sausage was alright--it sort of fell apart and felt grainy after chewing it. I wonder how the other BBQ joints in Lockhart compare to The Original Black's Barbecue. I'll check a different place out next time I'm passing the area. read more

I like how this location lets you see all of the sides/desserts when you walk by so you can decide what you want. The only thing I didn't like was the long line waiting to order your food. Mmm! We had brisket, ribs, sausage, chicken, and sweet potatoes. The brisket was tender and delicious, but lacking a little flavor. The ribs were tender. The original sausage and jalapeño sausage were both good - greasy, but not too greasy (most bbq places have greasy sausage). The sweet potatoes were okay; they weren't really sweet. I wouldn't get those again. So we ordered the same items from Smitty's on our trip and Black's was hands-down way better!! Everything was more tender and seemed slower, longer cooked. At best this bbq was mid. It was disheartening considering that Lockhart is considered the BBq capital of Texas. This was named one of the top 3 spots here. The brisket was as dry as a Popeyes biscuit. Had to drink tea as I took each bite just to make sure I didn't choke. The pork ribs were smoked well but way too dry and I had to use bbq sauce to give it some moisture. Potatoes salad and Mac n cheese were really good and the sweet tea felt as if I was gonna have diabetes (that's the best way to have it) The lady who did the sides and the cashier were nice but the butcher's manners were not southern like. Overall I hope the other two spots are better than here or I'm calling for a recall on votes and ask for another city to be the BBQ Capital of Texas. read more

So on the way back from our road trip we stopped here as we both love BBQ and Shana has never had Lockhart BBQ. You grab a plate and fill up on sides where you can also order quarts and pints. Potato Salad, beans, mashed potatoes with white/cream gravy or brown gravy. Mac and cheese, cream corn, desserts. They have brisket lean and moist, Turkey, sausage, original and hot/spicy. They have several types of ribs and chicken. She got potato salad and Turkey. I got mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, chicken, brisket lean, and regular sausage. We both got cream corn. The Turkey, brisket, and sausage was great. The chicken was the weakest but good. The mashed potatoes and cream corn was good. The mac and cheese was great. We took some Turkey and mashed potatoes home and we loved all of it. The bread was free and we ordered extra mashed potatoes. We may try ribs next time. I got a soda and she got water. They have several items for sale from caps and t shirts to koozie and bumber stickers. While some food was better then others it was overall great stuff and we were glad to have stopped. We did not buy any merch this time but perhaps next visit. I highly recommend this place and parking is easy, a small lot nearby and some street parking. read more

All right Yelpers. While the the 4-Star average assessment appears to be correct, I have to give them a 5. This is hands down the best BBQ we have ever eaten. I like they way they explain what to do as you come in the front door: 'grab a plate, the sides are $2.19 each, then come to us for meat'. OK. We told them this was our first visit so they gave us a sample of the beef rib and brisket. We were sold. We ordered a giant beef rib, brisket and a jalapeño cheese sausage link. For sides we had creamed corn, slaw, potato salad, and beans. The husband can't stop raving about the creamed corn. And we're back in SA. The meat is stupendous. Who needs a knife? It just falls off the bone or cuts under normal fork pressure. Condiments like onions, pickles and bread are on a side counter in the dining area. Sodas and tea (self serve) are in this same area. Speaking of area, this place is huge!! Remodeling, so to get to the bathrooms you walk a block to the back. I may be exaggerating, but the place is quite spacious. There is sauce on the table, but the bbq is so good, do not put this on your meat unless you are just one of those. The meat needs no doctoring. All the folks are so helpful and friendly. We visited the iconic Black's Barbecue in the the official epicenter and capital of Texas Barbecue, Lockhart. We ordered an enormous dinosaur beef rib (more than two-pounds, juicy and rich), and moist brisket. What we discovered is that with good barbecue, the BBQ sauce is irrelevant. The meats are so moist, so juicy, so flavorful, you not only don't need sauce, you don't want it. Save the sauce for your hamburgers. Second, as good as any barbecue restaurant is, their sides generally suck. If only they put as much effort into their sides as they do their barbecue. We tried the Sweet Corn and the Mac N Cheese, and found them gloppy average. But I am reviewing the barbecue, not the sides. The building was clean and well ordered, rest rooms clean, and all in all a very pleasant dining experience. So, IMHO, in Lockhart, for beef ribs, Black's Barbecue wins.
