We came here to experience the clothing optional beach and certainly that is what exists here from folks playing beach volleyball, lounging, or walking on the shore bearing all. It was fun to finally be free of these things called clothes for a while as we also frolicked a little in the sun and the Pacific which was a refreshing 70ish degrees. The beach was clean, deep and long going on for at least one mile north and several miles to the south at the terminus of the trail. At the top of the cliffs several hundred feet above the beach there is also a popular paragliding launching point. And you can purchase a paraglide tour that will allow you to soar above the beach and along the cliffs. The precarious hike down to the beach was a good 10 minutes and descended a trail that was steep in many sections. You need to be sure footed, but also you'll need strength on the return to make it back to your car. Where the gliders launched there was also a place to have a bite and beer and listen to music but we did not have much time. Next time I'm here I would go on a paragliding adventure! read more

The beach itself is beautiful. I'm not a prude but the following experiences are completely inappropriate and disgusting... If you're going with the intention of feeling 'free' and at peace while in nature by being nude-BE WARNED-sadly the majority of men who attend this beach nude have predatory behavior and invade your space, masturbate while staring at you, or follow you when you move to get away from them. One guy was walking holding his wife's hand and jerking off with his other hand while walking by me and my girlfriend. Another guy walked right up on us as we were getting up to leave instead of maintaining a respectful distance. I checked out Blacks Beach this past weekend and had a blast! I went on a solo mission and wasn't scarred at all. Lifeguards drive by often either making sure things are safe or checking out nudes... Haha. Either way I felt very safe! Will I go back? YES! Of course you will get your random creepers as you would at any nudist environment, however if you can hold you're own you will be just fine. Beautiful views and an amazing experience. It wasn't packed on a Sunday, which was nice. When you pull to the first dirt parking lot go to the left and park, I followed MapQuest. Hike down the side of the mountain which isn't a baby hike, however if you're active you will be fine and if you're not just stop a lot until you make it. Once you get down the steps head north a minute or two and Bam all the nudes, you've arrived. The hike back up is a beast, but you can do it! Bring water. I love this place. This is by far one of the best beaches in San Diego. It isn't over crowded like most of the beach in San Diego, i would imagine because to get down there it's hell!!!! Let me add it's also a nude beach. Definitely not for kids I'd say but to each their own. If you can handle the million stairs down do it. There's is a second entrance that's easier to get down but more of a bitch then the stairs to go up. Parking! Yay. Lol. For sure everyone's favorite topic. So parking is available, depending on the day it can be hell to find a spot though so you need to remain patient. Also it's a dirt parking lot that's bumpy AF! If your hung over this part sucks!!! As you pull up you'll come up to a nice grassy area with a concession stand and cool hang glider things. I know you can pay to do this activity but I think it's around 200$ or something. The staircases locates kind in front of you a little to the left. Again the stair case sucks. Lol. Your sure to be out of breath and rethinking life choices by the end. Again, back to the being hung over don't make the same mistake as me and buy water before you head down. The staircase is a little scary so just be careful. I do recommend some kind of shoe with traction. There's no railing so if you have any type of medical issues I would say this isn't the beach for you. Making it down isn't as bad as coming back up, that's for sure. The beach! Omg my favorite part! So this beach is beautiful. One of the few non crowded clean ones left in my opinion. Most of the people who come here fall into 1 of 2 category's for sure. 1) people who love being naked, and I mean love it! Lol. And the other would be younger surfers. This was definitely An Experience To Remember. We came here for the clothing optional (nude) beach, but were NOT prepared for the intense trail to get down! Luckily we packed light and didn't have much to carry. Apparently there is a paved trail at La Jolla Farms Drive down further south, but we took the trail we saw everyone else taking by the Gliderport cliffs. I'm an active person with strong legs, but it was intense both ways and my quads were sore for days after! The beach was lovely though, and everyone minded their own business. The water was cold but the sun was hot and the breeze was lovely. Too bad it's not more accessible :( I can't even find the La Jolla Farms Drive route on Google maps. Probably won't be back here unfortunately, because being able to be nude doesn't fully negate the agony of the climb back up-- kinda ruins the chill vibe of laying out on the beach. I'm from Charlotte, NC and for the first time I was in San Diego for about 2 days and my friend took me to this wonderful place. There is this wonderful trail to hike down there from Torrey pines to get down to the beach below and it is arduous for them who is not into hiking. The beach was super clean as compared to the remaining beaches in San Diego. Also, this is known as nude beach ( which I did not know initially) where clothing is optional. The best part is people don't judge and are respectful. The climate here was pretty moderate. I highly recommend going after 3 pm. I will definitely visit this place again if I ever visit SD. read more

Hello! Alright, I'm being completely serious here. When my mom & I checked into our hotel in La Jolla I quickly yelped near by beaches & this one happened to be the closest. I didn't read one word about it & I simply said to my mom ~ let's hike over there to catch the sunset. The trail is very steep from the very top and if you aren't used to it, you might find it a little challenging. With that said, the ocean views are just stunning and you get lost in the beauty around you. Once we reached the very bottom I asked my mom ~ is that guy naked over there? My mom looked & said no way. I then saw another naked guy and said again ~ there's another naked guy! Looking all around I saw naked bodies basking in the sun. Holy shit, I wasn't ready for this & then there's my mom right next to me. We had a great giggle about it and then strolled the beach for hours. We were trying not to stare & luckily were wearing sunglasses! In all seriousness, the beach is beautiful, away from the world. I applaud the folks who come out there and let it all hang. Some people complain about the fact that getting there is a bit of an effort. I think that's precisely what I like about it. Well, and it's also very, very nice and beautiful. It makes you feel like you're getting to a much more secluded beach (well, uh, I'm sure that both those who go and those who don't want to go appreciate that this particular beach is not the most accessible of them all, given its nature). I love going down the Beach trail and then go up the trail on the right (I can't remember the name), which allows you to complete a loop rather than go out and back. At the beach, I would recommend getting past that big rock on the right once you go down the stairs (you'll know what I mean once you see it) and go for a walk on that side of the beach. First time here. The beach is quiet and nice. It wasn't crowded which is really a big plus because you get to enjoy it with no fuss and you get to enjoy your hike in your own pace. We were there around 9ish (this past weekend),it wasn't hot at all, it was a little breezy, so calming and I loved the sound of the waves crashing against the shore. The trail is steep but manageable, easy peasy for Molly, my good girl and outdoorsy Chihuahua! Being on top and seeing the ocean is de-stressing, what a blissful day. Sure, I have witnessed the "nude" side of this place, while we were on our way back up to the trail the gentleman was on his way down and I noticed the "dangling" ~ at first I didn't know we were at the Black beach until this time and I have heard about it but I didn't make a big deal, just mind your own business. THIS IS A NUDE BEACH in case you didn't see it from the other reviews. it's actually quite nice though and mostly everyone minds their own business. There was one guy who began playing with himself but another man had yelled at him. Also another group of guys took pictures of my friends and I so just be aware of that. Also PLEASE BRING WATER. I only know of one entrance to this beach and it's the steep hill with all the stairs. Make sure you have good shoes because the sand makes it slippery. I almost passed out going back up because the heat was so bad and it was such a long ways up so please be aware of that. Other than those few flaws it's honestly a nice beach. read more

"Well down on the beach, "Where nobody goes, "There's Surfer Joe, "Without no clothes..." That song, written decades ago, was probably penned about Black's. It certainly doesn't apply today as it seems all of San Diego now goes here: "Well down on the beach, where EVERYONE goes..." We came here years ago to surf but it's been a nude beach long before that and we were always amused to pass naked sun-bathers on our way to the surf. Smart-asses would always try to get us to surf naked but I never saw anyone do that...except in the tropics. Something about the chilly water and making nipples hard as diamonds. The surf here is for experienced wave-riders only. Calmer waters are found north or south of here but the deep water canyon off Black's causes a huge upsurge of waves that'll beat the shit out of anyone that doesn't know what they're doing. Fair warning. This area, home to rare Torrey pines and a fucking golf course, is picturesque to the extreme. Tuscany or the Riviera have nothing on this place. But the growth of industry, condos and Mac Mansions all around it have significantly reduced it's attractiveness for those that sought isolation and freedom from the masses. And it's only going to get worse, unfortunately. I know I'm exposing my age when I say I can recall driving down the I-5 passing endless fields of cultivated flowers around Leucadia and not seeing a single house or condo above the bluffs. Not so these days. Realtors and developers would tell me this is the price of progress. Well, if that's progress, maybe I should spend more time in Tuscany. I know I'll have to wear clothes but that's the price of progress, eh? Update: Since y'all were so nice comping this review, I share my only naked surf story with you. It describes why you just don't see anyone doing it. If you don't like reading about pain, turn away now, child, turn away. My boyfriend and I were in lower Mexico, a place called Puerto Escondido aka "Mexican Pipeline" aka "Ball-Buster Beach" and the surf wasn't all that big so he says "I'm gonna do it!". I say "You better not". He says "Bah!", drops his trunks and throws himself into the surf. I stood on the beach, camera in hand, knowing a Kodak moment was nigh. First wave he gets, arms, hair (and everything else) flying and I get the picture. He begins to paddle back out and duck-dives under a wave. A second later, a horrible screech fills the air, I'm sure heard all the way to Guatemala. In a flash, he was on the shore bleeding profusely from his sack. Like a ruler slapping a desktop, his board had slapped his willie. I was a nurse, had the equipment and put eight stitches in his scrotum. He never did that again and we didn't have any sex the rest of the trip. And with him, that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. My favorite beach in San Diego. It's more remote and wonderfully scenic. White sand beaches are overrated. Jk, but this black sand is nice and soft, and easy to walk on! Few parts are covered with some rocks, but the beach is wide enough to manage. Be prepared for the short (15min) but steep hike to reach it. This beach has so many characters. One side is not nude, and full of surfers. The other side is super nude, men more than women. If you're fully clothed, they don't care either. But maybe good etiquette to stay on the non nude, left side of the beach if you're not baring all. There's 3 ways Ive found to reach it: hike down from glider port, Ho Chi Minh trail, and one paved path off la Jolla beach farms. Majestic views of cliffs and coastline. Hangliders scatter the skies sometimes. Bring a soccer ball, volleyball, frisbee or just your beach towel to fully enjoy this beach! FYI No Bathrooms down here. Don't pollute our oceans. I love blacks beach, it's the only beach I go to in San Diego. The hike down is terrifying, especially for me because I super hate walking downhill. Contrary to most people, I like hiking up a lot more because the risk of falling is close to none compared to walking downhill. I love being nude, and being nude next to other people. I don't mind the old men with saggy balls at all, because one day YOU will be the old person with saggy balls and/or saggy breasts. Don't hate or discriminate please. I don't like tanning that much, but it feels so free to walk around with no clothes on. No one is blatantly staring at you either because they don't have clothes on as well. The regulars who come here are so nice ! I went here once with another female friend and one of the men offered us a huge beach umbrella ( I mean he probably wouldn't have offered if I was here with a guy but nice nonetheless no ? :) P.S. The hike up is not for pussies, you will definitely be out of breath by the time you make it back up to the parking lot. Blacks is an educational experience for those not well-versed in the literal interpretation of "How's it hangin'?" It is also, without a doubt, the most beautiful stretch of beach in San Diego. With sheer cliffs on one side and endless ocean on the other, low tide is an orgy of beauty. If you can ignore the ACTUAL orgies occurring on the north end of the beach, Blacks is an amazing place to spend the day. There is a group called the "Blacks Beach Bares" who help maintain some semblance of safety. That is, they want to protect their tan-lines (or lack thereof), and to ensure that CA continues to turn a blind eye to their hanging wangs, they go out of their way to keep the beach safe and clean. You can find them on the northern end of the beach in between their hallmark flags. They're actually quite nice. The beach is typically uncrowded, in part because getting to it requires effort (beyond finding parking). And because people don't abound, wildlife does. It is not unusual to see pods of dolphins, seals, and the resident Peregrine falcon looping overhead. If you're feeling particularly motivated, you can walk all the way to Torrey Pines Beach - a rocky path connects the two. Be sure to bring plenty of water and sunblock... otherwise, you'll have to borrow some from The Naked Guys. read more

Okay... There is sort of a death wish climbing down from Torrey Pines Glider Port down to Black's beach. I have done it a couple of times, there are other options walking from the beach north of this area. It's a great place to be naked (although I don't think this is legal in this beach but tolerated since the kids aren't around here too much - too far from the actual beach area where they normally congregate). No ghetto people or kids running around 2. No ghetto music 3. Privacy! 4. Nothing but u and the sounds of the ocean. 5. Naked people everywhere. Yes most of older and most of the guys are gay. But it's so worth it for a little private beach that many don't dare to go to bc of the hike. This place is awesome. Yes it takes about 15 mins to hike down but it's worth it. If u are planning for a beach date plan to stay several hours. The hike up is the worst part of this trip. It can take anywhere from 15 to 30 mins to hike back up the mountain . (Of course of of this depends on it physical abilities to do hikes and stairs) although I have see. Many many people carrying surf board and large beach supplies with no problem! First nude beach experience ever. It wasn't that weird and everyone here (nude or not), seems to be very chill and mild-mannered. This beach is far and away one of the least crowded in SD so you don't have to battle hoards of people for a good spot. It's a nice place to lay back, relax, and listen to the sound of the waves. You will see a plethora of hang gliders over the cliffs as well as the main entrance to the beach is adjacent to the Torrey Pines glider port. From the glider port sand parking lot, you will have to hike down a series of winding switchbacks and stairs for about 20 minutes to get to the beach below. It can get steep and slippery but if you tread carefully, no problem (I made it in sandals). Going back up can be hellish, as it is the same thing but straight uphill. This is a great place to play volleyball as they have a few courts set up here. Other activities you can here are frisbee and even a pick up game of football with all the open space. The views here are great as well and you can see the La Jolla cove shorelines in the distance. Definitely go here if you are looking for a quieter, low-key beach spot. Don't go here if you are searching for the mysterious unicorn hot naked girl though (you will find old men). LOL! read more

Considering the hike down to get here.. this beach is super packed on a warm weekend! Perhaps it's because there's really no place like it.. Nudes playing beach volleyball, loads of paragliders taking off, nudes laying out, epic surf, some pretty raw nature sights, and more nudes! Just be careful though - I hadn't visited this beach in over 3-4 years since I ran into some major creepers the last time I came. Even with my bf laying out right beside me, there were some weirdos who would set-up their seats directly behind us. If you can get down the steep stairs (be careful, wear good sandals!), this beach is worth the trek down. The worst thing was probably the hike up, I had to stop for like 2 minutes to catch my breath LOL. Don't forget anything because you'll hate yourself for having to come back up & down again. As for the beach itself, there's plenty of space to walk further down if you wanna get away from where most people settle down & make your own private camp. The most important part is that the beach is clean, so keep it that way and don't be a dick. Random parts of the cliff or whatever started a mini avalanche when we were there lol so be careful of that. *SPOILER ALERT...it's a nude beach! But don't expect to see topless models or anything, it's mostly fatter, older, hairy men so don't set your standards too high- unless you're into that hahaha. In fact I say fck it and join them! My favorite beach in San Diego. You don't have to be completely naked. It took me a while to get to that point but the waves are amazing there if you want to surf or whatever. Keep in mind that you have to hike down to get to the beach. The hike is about 15 minutes so wear appropriate shoes because you might slip(I slipped my first time there). You can parasail at the top of the cliff. I encourage everyone to try it at least once. You might end up loving it...once you get past the naked thing. Also if you bring food, make sure you cover it well. The seagulls there WILL steal it. I've lost a couple of sandwiches to them. And the view is AMAZING at the top. If you are just going to Black's beach to see certain types of naked bodies, stay home and spare us your attitude. If you are going the beach to enjoy a beautiful beach, the warm sand and water, meet interesting people, and go NAKED doing it, you should have a pretty good time. Two of the most interesting people I meet there were two people that had to be in their 80's. They were both really skinny and had great tans. They were both wearing hats with day glo bands that matched their day glo sandals and day glo rimmed sunglasses. They were in from traveling the world. They were always surrounded by a group of people of all ages every time you saw them down there- just delightful people. I thought it was amusing the day their children. grand children and great grandchildren came with them. Everyone got naked except for the one's in their 20's and early thirties-the prudes.
