NICE PLACE TO STAY FOR A BEACH GETAWAY ====================================== I found an Airbnb in South Mission Beach with a big garage, so I booked it for a few days for my anniversary. We had kind of scoped out the area a few months in advance when my son and his Army co-workers were staying in a hostel. I thought it would be a great place to take our e-bikes because I noticed the paths around Mission Bay. We were really happy we had a nice place with a big garage because finding street parking would be a royal pain. We avoided riding our bikes on Mission Boulevard like the plague because you would definitely be taking your life in your own hands. One day we rode to La Jolla via Strandway by the beach. I am pretty sure it was the weekend and it was a total zoo. I finally told my husband we needed to go to La Jolla via a street, that wasn't Mission Boulevard. There is also a path around Mission Bay you can take, but you might be dodging pedestrians too. If you want to ride your bike around the area I highly recommend going on a weekday when schools are back in session. read more

This is my favorite beach in San Diego! We have been to Coronado, Ocean, and Pacific Beaches but this one is the best. The boardwalk has shops and restaurants as well as Belmont Park with clean bathrooms. You can walk right off the boardwalk onto the beach and don't have to walk forever like at Coronado or manage a lot of stairs like at Pacific. I needed to get out of my apartment and do / see something creative, so with a little quick search, I was able to find South Mission Beach. More specifically, Graffiti Shack on Hidden San Diego (https://hiddensandiego.net/things-to-do/places/graffiti-shack). According to the Hidden San Diego article, Graffiti Shack once housed an electric box for a light at the end of the jetty that served to warn boats of the jetty's location. It also helped guide the boats in as this area can get quite foggy at night. Before the structure was put in, there were at least a handful of accidents and capsized boats. I visited South Mission Beach in August 2020 (5 months after Pandemic started). The place is beautiful and definitely picture friendly!! San Diego, sun, beach, water, nice breeze.... that is definitely all smiles (even in a pandemic)!! I went on a Sunday afternoon and probably spent an hour or two there. There were quite a few people out; I was able to walk comfortably with my facemask on. The rocks were a little bit tough to get through (context - I'm not a hiker at all). My friend and I only made it about halfway through the rocks before we decided to sit on the rocks and enjoy the sun instead (I have a beautiful farmer's tan to show for it too). Hahahaha!! Probably the busiest beach or most touristy beach in San Diego. Reminds me of Santa Monica Beach Pier in LA. This beach offers a lot of activities since it caters to tourists. There are a lot of places to grab food and drinks along the beach. We went at around 3pm, and it was crowded. Our group of 8 found a place to lie down and relax. I'm not in San Diego very often, but I need to visit more often. It's such a beautiful place. Great place to relax and get away. read more

My memories of South Mission Beach back in the day, specifically from high school was that this was the rougher part of Mission Beach and a beach where we could have bonfires, enjoy some libations, and pass the time with your main squeeze at the time without be harassed by big brother. Times have certainly changed since then and it's a lot less rough with plenty of rules and regulations in place now. Not to say there is anything wrong with that because with the rules comes a more family oriented beach, a surfing haven for many, and a great quality beach with some soft warm white sand, not to mention a nice grassy area with picnic tables and restrooms. It's actually one of my favorite beaches in San Diego, not just because of the fond memories, but also because of its beautiful view looking south and north, and of course, out into the Pacific Ocean. read more

One of my favorite beaches in San Diego! I think one of the best things about this beach is the versatility. Want to ride a bike or rollerblade? Go for a walk or a run? Ride rollercoasters and play mini golf? Grab a bite to eat? Sunbathe? Go for a swim? Play volleyball? Take fido for a walk on the sand? Buy touristy souvenirs? You can do it all at this beach! We stayed at a VRBO rental across the street from Belmont Park 3 different times (November, May and July). I recommend this beach and area, it has a fun and laid back California vibe to it. Our favorite thing to do here was take a look walks on the paved path next to the beach. You can take in the beauty of the ocean without struggling to walk on the sand. There are many restaurants near Belmont Park, these aren't fine dining establishments, but it's quick and fairly friendly on the wallet. There is a pretty good amount of free parking here, but it was insane here on the 4th of July weekend, so be here super early on holiday weekends! read more

We've enjoyed this beach a few times now. It's a GREAT place to have your morning walk! We stopped for a cup of coffee and enjoyed people watching and the surfers enjoying the waves!!! You can walk in the sand and get your feet wet in the water! Come out and build a sand castle or two on the beach. There's a nice walkway ( sidewalk ) that's shared with walkers, bike riders, skateboarders, rollerbladers, dog walkers, and/or joggers!! Along this path are nice beach homes/condos! LOTS of beachside rentals available!! It's FANTASTIC to wake up to the waves and enjoy that morning coffee with a view! Besides the beach home rentals are also restaurants and shopping!! There's also shops that rents wet suites, surf boards, or bicycles. The minor downside is the homeless folks walking around with all their stuff and rummaging through the trash cans. It breaks my heart to see so many people without a place to call home. read more

Mission Beach has always been my main stomping ground, and where I prefer to hang out when I go to the beach. I miss it when I'm not there! Oh gosh, I can't even list all that comprises the entire realm of Mission Beach. But here's a short synopsis, and some pictures, in case you haven't traveled there yet. When you go, you'll never run out of things to do; it's just one of those places you'll dream about. The beach itself is one of the most popular ones along this particular stretch. One of the things I love is that, attached to the boardwalk, are little stretches of walkways that lead to various beach houses, of which some are summer rentals. To find an apartment along these lushly landscaped walkways is next to impossible because they are 1) either occupied year-round by the owners, or 2) they are occupied by people who have rented them out for the summer seasons. The best thing to do is to get a group of friends or family, and pool your money to rent a place for a month or so. Most rentals are all-inclusive and include everything down to dishes and utensils and pots and pans for cooking. To find one, you can readily spot various realtors all along Grand Avenue and Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach. There also are some realtors located along Mission Boulevard as well. Mission Beach is located in between Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach, and you have everything you need here. Rentals, restaurants, retail and souvenir shops, health care, attractive people, a wave house, nearby Belmont Park (a fun park with a roller coaster), and of course, a pristine, laid-back beach. Some great restaurants around Mission Beach (some of my favorites) that I think you should try are: The Mission Cafe Rubicon Deli Rocky's New York Giant Pizza The Olive Season's 52 Rum Jungle La Playa Taco Shop Hodad's The Duck Dive Spice Lounge Phil's BBQ .....and so many more! I came here a couple of time for beach volleyball depending on my meetup group Volleyballers. Parking is small so you would need to wedge in! Normally I always try to carpool so it would not be that bad parking. Sand is pretty clean and all around you see people playing volleyball. Normally many people play two's but there are also courts here and there who play four's. I am still a complete newbie at playing even though I started last year. I have not been going often but it is still loads of fun when you play with varying levels. My younger cousin likes to rub it in that he plays better than me. And I recently got him to go to volleyball Sundays. Make sure to beat him down if his name is Jeffrey for me please! Usually just need to bring nets to set up which is not so bad. Chilly in the early morning and sand gets blown all over as it is a beach. Definitely a do - to play beach volleyball in San Diego at South Mission Beach if you like! If I could give 10 stars I would for the most hysterical places to be over the weekend...not because I found this place funny but because of an honest mistake that took place at this beach. Aside from the personal experience, this place was fairly busy! Located close to shops at Belmont Park, the beach was spacious and many people lounging or playing on the sand, bar & grill area hosted events where many participated. Compared to OC's beaches, Mission Beach was comfortable and not over crowded, parking was easy to find, and is much closer to many shops and restaurants. read more

There are worse places than Mission Beach. This beach (and surrounding environs) can occasionally get crowded, but parking isn't horrible, and there's a free lot by the park. There's lots to keep you busy. Besides the roller coaster (people were screaming, so it has to be good), there's a sandy beach, volleyball nets (uncertain if they're provided or not), and yes, places to buy kitschy crap. There's plenty of random eateries, including pizza places, and a nifty Greek place that I've yet to try. If you need a drink to wash all that down, there's certainly no shortage of bars. Keep in mind that there are comfy homes along the shore with real, live RESIDENTS living in them, so don't be an asshat when you're there. read more

Mission Beach is just great. It's not the best beach I've ever been to but it's certainly up there in my top ten. I mean, it's in sunny San Diego in beautiful California. The weather is damn near perfect year round here and the ocean is drop dead gorgeous. What's not to love? The sand is really packed down hard which makes it easier to walk or jog on. It's never too crowded and the sunsets here are beautiful. The lovely cliffs just add to the perfect setting. If I had to name two things I didn't love about Mission Beach one would be all of the rocks here. They can be slippery and you do have to step carefully or you'll wipe out. The second thing is that the water is COLD. All in all it's definitely a gorgeous beach that you really must see. read more

I LOVE SAN DIEGO AND MISSION BEACH IS ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS WHY! If you want, just skip to the bottom and read my pro tip fellas, ladies read on! This beach is located in San Diego and I try to visit as often as I can. I prefer two other beaches when it comes to relaxing and laying around but when it comes to having a good time, Mission Beach has my vote. The following is a list of activities I really enjoy doing here: - Kayaking. - Surfing. - Cycling. - Wakeboard. - Volleyball. - Sunbathing. - Shop. - Eat. The above is just the tip of the iceburg as far as day time activities goes. There are multiple kayaking tours you can find and I've never had any issues reserving my spot/renting gear online. Renting a bike is as easy as renting a wakeboard. Surfing is another option and just like kayaking, you practice and go over safety precautions on a grassy area before heading to the beach. You can meet the coolest and most chill strangers in the world playing volleyball or throwing frisbee around, I've joined random people playing and have been accepted every time. Belmont Park! This amusement park is loads of fun. I've done everything from riding the roller coasters, playing laser tag, rock/wall climb, and surfing on the flowrider which imitates a crashing wave. The food, snack, and sweets are okay but I would rather travel off-site to grab a bite to eat. A nightlife activity I would really recommend is riding on the paddleboat that you'll occasionally see if you're on Mission Beach. For less than $10 a person you can catch a ride on this boat and have a nice view from the top deck of Mission Beach. You can also dance to the live music being played. **PRO-TIP**, try to catch a ride at around 8:30-9:00pm or find out what time Sea World shoots off their fireworks, it is a romantic scene especially at night. When in San Diego, you have to visit a beach. Beaches and Mexican food are prerequisites. I decided to opt for Mission Beach over nearby Pacific Beach since it seemed like a lively spot. Mission Beach is compared to beaches on the East Coast like Coney Island. Haven't been to NY, so I can't make that comparison. Though it did remind me a little of Santa Cruz with its oceanside location and amusement park offerings. I didn't have time to get some sun tanning on the beach done so I just walked along the the boardwalk instead. It spans a great distance as the beach is massive. Mission Beach was crowded, but not to the point that you could not move around easily. There was plenty of beach for you to plop your towel. Mission Beach is a great place for outdoor activities like biking, rollerblading and sand volleyball. The boardwalk is full of street performers too if the waves here are not entertaining enough for you. It was interesting to see how close the houses at Mission Beach are to the water and sit next to the boardwalk. It must be so cool to live beachside there. Sitting outside one of those houses with a beer in hand watching the goings on at the beach on a sunny day sounds perfect to my current reality of seeing rain falling on a cloudy dark Seattle evening. If you are looking for a lively beach in San Diego to check out, Mission Beach is that place. A great spot in San Diego to relax and have a BBQ. There are a few spots and people are always waiting for one to open up. I suggest getting here early if you're planning on having a group or even a bonfire. The sand is protected by rocks so there isn't much erosion. There are basketball hoops and large areas of sand near by that are perfect for flying a kite. I highly suggest brining lounge chairs and tents to ensure a lengthy time at the beach. Having visited several beaches in San Diego and other cities, I really feel this is a highly active beach. You can see water skis and sailboats coming to and from. There's also good bike lanes for loungers. The restroom is clean and functional with running water and showers. What's really great is- You can't beat the free parking. read more

This part of Mission Beach is where my gym hosts a free beach workout to anyone on Saturdays, by the jetty. I love this area, because it usually does not get too crowded in the morning, and I usually land some parking. There are beach volleyball courts for you to get your vball on, fire pits to get a blaze going, and plenty of sunshine to brighten any local's day. The city does a pretty good job keeping up with the seaweed along the shoreline, but the public bathrooms are of course something to be left desired. Make sure you wear flip flops in there or feet beware. There is a nearby showerhead to rinse off that sand. This area is shared by surfers, tourists, runners, bicyclists, you name it. Do your part by keeping it clean and tidy so we can all enjoy San Diego's natural beauty. read more

How can 70 year old women possibly look that good in a two piece? Just sayin... I've been here and there, and I may not know much, but I kinda know kids. And I know how today's kids love to chase and torment birds. Several times, I watched as spirited youngins ran after our fowl feathered friends. Hey, I may or may not be mistaken, but if you bought a Pogo Pass, you get unlimited rides on the boardwalk... FOR FREE! If you walk north along the beach walkway, you'll pass an area where people phony surf. Things you can do besides phony surf: jog, pedal beach cruisers, scoot long-boards, roller blade. The sun ain't no joke in America... so If you've had enough, retire to the shade of the trees that line Mission Blvd. Or get your homeless guy on, and take a quick nap on any of the multiple picnic tables provided on the large grassy knoll. HELPFUL TIP: Nicer bathrooms are near the rock climbing wall. read more

They have scooters everywhere and I highly suggest riding the scooter on the boardwalk and all the way down to the pier. This beach is perfect for new riders. Marty & I were at part of a Men's coffee group which held a monthly pot luck bonfire here away from the main beach where the bonfires pits are located, where volley ball, green grass abound and right next to the bungalows of The Mission Beach Lodge. They are just captivating, stream, mini bridges, waterfalls, ducks & water fowl of many kinds and a sculpture in the middle that is so eclectic, you will be mesmerized. And, on the many times we attended, we really enjoyed the experience of this beach at early evening into the later hours prior to closing. A big difference from the times we were here during the day, on week end days and holidays-crowded is not the word, mobs of mobs, but nice mobs. Either way, this place has so much to offer, if you are dissatisfied with Mission Beach, come to Long Beach and walk the bike path and see the difference a city council makes by keeping the element from ruining a beautiful place (that review is next!) ============================================================ Cannot say I blame folks for wanting to come here, with all Mission Beach has to offer including a mini them park wooden roller coaster if you want to ride and hurl you lunch, a mini market off to the right with little shops & stands of choc-skies and the like. And there's the parking lot that has no spaces open ever. Unless you are like Samantha on Bewitched and twitch your nose or, Jeannie from I Dream of Jeannie, fold your arms, bob your head and blink to make one appear! Park on the street if you are able, and feed the meters or you will be ticketed worse than that show Parking Wars! All that being said, a very enjoyable place, clean, well kept, something for everyone and then some. There is no breakwater at this beach (unlike Long Beach and it's filthy water because of one), which allows crashing waves to cool you off in the spring & summer and offer up fresh ocean sprays to enhance your olfactories with the aromas of the ocean in the fall & winter months. Great for kids too, munchkins are in heaven here, and people watching is a pure joy as everyone comes to forget their troubles for a day afternoon or night. (Forgive me as I laugh at this sentence) During our San Diego vacay, we made plans for a return visit to Mission Beach just because we liked it so much the first time. Just hanging out and relaxing with the cool breeze of the Pacific wind blowing in our faces is just fine by us. We came prepared this time complete with blankets, mats, towels and even a shade the wifey picked up at WalMart. (*Shudders*) The weather was hot, but I didn't mind it since along with the hot weather came the bikinis and beach bodies of San Diego gals playing beach volleyball or getting their tans on. Yes, I obviously kept my shades on just to let it all marinate and enjoy the scenery. Took my oldest kid and we rented a couple of bikes so we can explore the vicinity while exercising at the same time. OK...I'll be honest: As a married man, you'd do the same thing I'd do without hurting anyone's feelings. Hey, we were just "looking" at the view and we weren't sampling the goods. The beach is lined up of vacation and rental houses from end to end and thought this was another option we could look into. Plenty of things to do or just do nothing while enjoying the sun. It's close to a bunch of good restaurants nearby whenever you get hungry. Another plus is the restroom is pretty decent and shower is available. What's not to love about Mission Beach? When comes to beaches in San Diego, Mission Beach has it all. There was a time when me and the teenager would come here daily during the day, then Coronado at night. Now living in Las Vegas, I can't help but think about Mission Beach, especially during the scorching summer. The beach is one of those things I took for granted when I lived in San Diego. Not anymore though. I don't mind playing tourist when I'm back in Daygo. What Mission Beach has to offer: -Beach, sand, and warm water -Perfect weather most of the year -Belmont Park -The Boardwalk -Beach Volleyball -Basketball Courts -Stores/Shops -Restaurants -Beach Rentals: Bikes, surf boards, and more. -Grunion Runs (by season and of course at night) -Lets not forget the beautiful people out here You name it, Mission Beach has it. Parking is plentiful, but of course crazy during 3 day weekends or holidays. Still not my favorite beach in San Diego, but it is the most well-rounded one. If after you experience everything that Mission Beach has to offer and wanting more, you got Gaslamp, Seaport Village, Malls, Golf, and Sea World all within just a few miles away. read more

Having been in this area probably almost half a dozen times, I thank the bf for suggesting that for once we should walk across the street (literally) to the beach that was right there across from many delicious breakfast places located on Mission Bay Dr. What a gorgeous beach. It was decently clean, the sand was soft and the skies were sunny. The beach stretched for as far as I could see or wanted to see and although the beach area was "narrow", effectively the beach's length made up for it. There were great waves crashing up against the beach the day I went so looked like a great time for surfing. I also love some of the more architectural pieces (houses) along the beach area. This is probably one of the cleaner beaches I've seen in CA and I would take this over a beach in the LA area any day. read more

Sketchy beach vibes. Besides Pacific Beach, I feel like this might be the most flooded with tourist when it comes to plain old beach hanging. Thousands of people from all over the Southwest descend on this beach every summer which makes a simple beach day turn into a traffic fueled cluster f**k. Why did I come here? I was at the mercy of an indecisive group and because I was told Ocean Beach is too, "dirty", which is true, but I find the parking and traffic there to be a lot less bothersome. The beach here isn't all that bad, it's just packed with tourist and their screaming kids. I'm also not a fan of walking 150ft to the water's edge. OB, PB, La Jolla, and Silver Strand have much closer waterfronts. There are two parking lots, one across the street and one right near the sand. I suggest going to the one across the street and just waiting for people to leave instead of wasting gas by driving in figure eight-loops around the parking lot. Normal wait times for a spot on a busy day... thirty five minutes. I can already hear your exasperated sigh. This place also seems a little on the sketchy side. Which makes perfect sense, I mean where's the high crime activity normally found? Near a slew of distracted visitors whom are too busy lugging fifty pounds of beach accessories, while their children run circles around them begging for another ice cream cone from Belmont Park. This beach is right on the borderline of, "Meh..." and "A-OK" - Since I didn't get stabbed, it's A-OK! read more

Mission Beach Boardwalk. I just cant stay away. This is not a quiet retreat. I come here for the people, the beach, the sun and the boardwalk. A delightful scenic waterfront path. This is the ocean I know. It was crowed for a Thursday, most likely due to the awesome weather and vacation time. I walk the walk first. There's always action here. There are plenty of places to eat and drink along the way, though the sidewalk dividing the beach from the businesses is pretty narrow. I like coming to mission beach in order to get some sun exercise. It was a beautiful 75 degrees today so I thought it would be nice to get some fresh air. I park at the south end by the volleyball nets. There's usually plenty of parking and it's a little more chill then the Belmont park side. The beach is pretty clean. There's plenty of volleyball nets to get your game on and a few bonfire pits also. You can sit up on the rocks and watch the boats go by. It's always about 10 degrees cooler by the beach so make sure you bring a light sweater in case you get cold easily. The ocean winds can be a bit chilly. The sunset wasn't as great today, there were too many clouds in the sky but I love seeing the purples and pinks that cover the sky as the sun goes down. You definitely should visit the side of the beach if you're looking for a quieter place on the beach. read more

How much you enjoy this beach really depends on what you're looking for.. looking to lay out by the beach and get a nice tan and people watch? GREAT! looking for a place to grab drinks and food? bad! My freinds and I came on a sunday to try to just find a place to grab some drinks and food by the beach, there was only ONE restaurant where we were and it was packed. we asked the hostess and she told us there was another place but it was a FAR walk.. we gave it a shot.. walked down the beach for about a mile and saw nothing but houses along the beach and gave up and walked back :(. ended up just going home.. hungry and sober. maybe i was in the wrong area? but i parked right by the rollar coaster and wavehouse.. so it seemed like a pretty prime location read more

I came to visit my friends who lived in SD, and I said I wanted to go to a beach. So they took me here, because it was the beach where there is "more to see." It has a boardwalk, a lot of people doing various activities, and even has a club "Wavehouse" that gets poppin during the summer. What I noticed myself was that there were a LOT of birds. This lady had food and she basically got attacked by birds lol! Everyone was watching and laughing. Poor lady. But order some carne asada fries and eat at the beach anyway. After being in San Fran for a week destroying my liver and fattening my belly, a visit to these courts was just the welcome back to San Diego that I needed. It's perfectly located about a 20 minute bike ride from OB or PB so I decided to cruise over and spend my labor day being active rather than just partying. You can really spend all day here if you want. They've got a basketball court that's kept it tip top shape and of course it's right on the ocean. This is one of those places that I visit and thank my lucky stars that I live in America's Finest City. read more

This beach is beautiful beautiful beautiful! The weather was perfect. The sand was clean. The pedestrian beach side path is clean. Maybe it's called a boardwalk, but for some reason, I don't know why, I cannot get myself to call it a boardwalk. Tons of eye candy for the girls... barely any eye candy for the boys. Really, there is barely any sightseeing on this beach. There are no shops on the beach path (I really can't get myself to call this a boardwalk) and the vast majority of the houses/residences on the beach had "For Lease" signs. KInda took away from the experience. It took us longer to look for parking than it did to walk the "boardwalk." Great weather, nice beach. Nice stretch of cafes and shops on the main drag just two buildings east of the beach. Any two buildings. If you're looking to get away from the extreme heat or extreme cold and enjoy the nice temperate weather that Southern California is popular for, come and rent one of these properties (ranging from worn out to ultra modern)! read more

Not just a beach... but an entire boardwalk both beach and bay side....... that you can skate, roll, walk, run or ride on... along the sand... or just kook it out on the sand...on your beach blanket bingo. South Mission Beach is at the end by the jetty... a large parking lot that bursts at the seams during Summer time and Weekends...even the cars need oil to squeeze into those tight spots. Good luck finding a parking spot...pray to the parking Karma gods...you will need it. Large grass area, for BBQ's and picnics... beach volleyball... Basketball.. and of course the ocean... for wading and surfing...... What is great about South Mission is that there is a large bathroom located at the entrance of the sand... with showers.... just please oh please... put your soggy diapers in the trash... read more

We stayed at Casa de la Playa on Mission Beach for a week. We had all four units, and with just over 20 people (8 being kids), it was perfect to have to beach so close. This beach is really large, great for families, and we felt really safe. There are quite a few homeless people that walk along the path and a group or two that stay by the pier. The path along the beach has tons of places to eat, drink, and lots of beach houses. There are lifeguards all over the beach that are really attentive and helpful. They put up flags to help indicate where to swim or where to surf. It's a beautiful and safe beach! read more
