We had the Mine Shaft (pepperoni, Italian sausage, hamburger, ham, bacon, 5 cheese blend & red sauce) and the Big Dummy (Pepperoni, Italian sausage, hamburger, ham, green & red bell peppers, red onion, garlic, mushrooms, green & black olives, 5 cheese blend,and red sauce). Both were delicious and filling. We were there on a Sunday afternoon around 2:00 pm. Service was fair as there was only one staff waiting tables and bartending. Really awesome pizza. We stayed at Residence Inn in Joplin MO on our westward road trip and the front desk manager recommended this establishment. We were seated quickly and our drink order was delivered within a few minutes. We ordered a pretzel and a pizza. The pretzel with the cheese sauce was the very best pretzel I've ever had. It has a crispness to it and wasn't overly salty as most. If you go there, do yourself a favor and order the pretzel. The pizza we ordered was called the Mine Shaft. The crust was fantastic and the pizza was pretty good. Not in my top 10 but good. Ambiance is different but relaxed. We enjoyed the service, which was great, and the food was pretty good with an unbelievable pretzel. read more

This place is everything you want in a hole in the wall music joint, and with awesome craft beer!! I have to say, if I were going to pick the taps at a bar, I would pick every craft beer they have currently. They have an awesome selection, primarily darker beers which is what I would choose every time. Blackthorn came up on my Google search as a beer bar. I was in town and wanted to try a local brewpub. I wanted a pizza and beer. This place serves many beers on tap. I ordered a chocolate porter from Kansas City and a "Happy Hippy" small veggie pizza ($9). I noted how dark it was inside. There are a lot of tables in here and I'm sure when there is live music, this place rocks. It was after 8pm on a Sunday night. I took a seat at the bar. There were two other customers and the place was not busy. The bartender was friendly and competent, but he was busy cleaning the place. The beer was ok (a bit flat) and the pizza crust too hard. While it was topped with a lot of toppings, the tasteless crust really ruined the flavor. This isn't a bad place at all, and I'm sure people who are into the dark bar scene would like this place, but this isn't a place I'd come back to. read more

I can only assume Blackthorn's 3.5 star average is due to the grungy, punk rock bar vibe of the location itself, because it certainly isn't an accurate representation of the food. Only having visited once, I can't speak for the whole menu, but the iconica I shared with my group was an absolute marvel of delicately balanced flavors that transcended our expectations effortlessly. Yes, service was a bit slow (it is a bar, after all), and it's true that the crowd is a bit rougher around the edges than one might prefer. And although I didn't partake of any adult beverages on this trip, I did listen to several of my friends lament the rather paltry selection of available liquors. These limitations are, to my mind, the only things holding the establishment back from five star status. Otherwise, if you enjoy good food and are prepared to embrace a divey ambiance, there's no reason you won't enjoy Blackthorn. read more

What kind of bar makes you pay 20 bucks to use a crummy broken pool table and then on top of it doesn't have any cream to make White Russians etc. or a bunch of alcohol to make average drinks. many of the drinks we ordered the guy quickly denied for the simple reason they didn't have something. He couldn't make us my ties, White Russians, Colorado bulldogs, cucumber sunrise, or any other drink that we ordered. the pizza was terrible. For some reason at 8pm on a Friday a family with two little kids age 4 and 3 were dining there. Is this a bar or is it a chunky cheese? 80$ are u kidding me. Stopped in thinking it was the same Blackthorn as the one in St Louis, nope. But, that was OK with me. Staff was interactive and friendly. Beer was cold and the pizza was worth coming back for. Love these resurgent downtown sort of places. I will be there when traveling to Joplin again. read more

I always come here every other Tuesday for a Drinking Liberally gathering. The place is the typical pub you might see in shows. The place is a nice little hole in the wall joint. But if you are not into the pub scene, it does have a arcade room for you to play some old school games. The pub supports local talent since there usually are local bands that come every night around 9. Cigar, pipe, or cigarette smoker? This bar is smoke free so stand outside with everyone else enjoying conversations and night air. The only problem that I have is that the service is not up to par with a typical joint. It seems most of the time we have to go and get help if no one bothers to come and see what a group of new people want. read more

I've only been once, but I had a good time. It's a small to mid sized selection of beer but with a few interesting ones thrown in and a few seasonal specialties. Staff was nice, cool dim pub atmosphere, and a pool table and arcade in the adjoining room. My coat smelled like smoke for the next three days, but until Joplin sacks up and realizes that a smoking section in a restaurant (they serve pizza and even have a buffet at certain times. Definitely a restaurant.) is like having a peeing section in a pool you are stuck with that any place. Still, I enjoyed it and would be happy to hang out here in the future. Also, order at the bar. I didn't see any servers, just the tender, so without a tab he isn't coming to you. read more

Upon approaching my favourite evening time Pizzeria/Pub for lunch, I was reminded of going to one of my ex-wives house for a meal. Familiar, inviting, and comfortable, ...but with the possibilities of unsatisfactory occurrences hanging overhead, like the very sword of Damocles. All too often, seeing a place in broad daylight, previously seen only through the dim illumination of neon lights is akin to waking up next to someone whose make-up has been rubbed off on unwashed low thread count sheets. It's refreshing however to experience a place whose appearance in full spectrum light is closer to the sudden heightened awareness felt from your first good acid trip: bright and alive. All worries and concerns faded like rent needs after payday when I was greeted and seated, and just as quickly provided with an "Iced Tea", a beverage, that while lacking the "Long Island" aspect was every bit as refreshing, and should be tried by all. In an effort to show that Punk Rock isn't dead, I opted to not order from the tried and true flavours that I've come to love and want, but instead ordered their newest creation sight unseen and taste unknown. "The Warpig", which offers a housemade "Honey/Serrano Sauce" was a battle of honey sweetness that is reminiscent of a loves first kiss and the deep burn of that same love when it's run it's course and gone south. The pie topped with fork tender pig meat and sweet peppers made for a dish I will desire and hunger for, ...like a starry eyed junkie searching for that cherry high. All together, the surreal experience of a time honoured night time favourite haunt seen in the refreshing light of day, and having an amazing repast laid before me by willing staff members makes me long for the days of my youth, before I was jaded and soured by the gristmill of life. read more

All the bartenders are really friendly and the owner Roger is pretty cool. They have an awesome craft beer selection and the prices for them are not bad at all (I recommend the chocolate stout). The crowd is kind of a mix. I got called a faggot for cheering for a different team, so...yeah. Most people I've talked with there are nice and talkative. I've had two great late nights there. We love this place. Great pizza. Lots of different kinds. I got the white sauced chicken and sauce pizza and it was great, my wife got the BBQ pizza and she loved it. The owner was very friendly and event let us sample some things on tap. This is definitely one of our favorite places. Only reason I rated it at 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the price. My boyfriend and I enjoy coming here on date night. It's his favorite spot for pizza and beer. Prices are fair. The last time we went it was his birthday and the owner have him a choice of a two free beers or a free shot, which was pretty nice. One of the only Irish bars in Joplin. They have the largest amount of taps (20), but only 10 - 12 will have beers in them at any time. Food wise they mainly serve pizza with other bar food. They do live bands several times a week, and they are good at advertising it. They have a pool table with a few other arcade games. read more

I attended a show that some friends of mine were playing and at first was having a great time. I purchased drinks and had no issues with service. The pizza is good and there's a good drink selection. Roger was introduced to me as the owner and he seemed nice. However, once he became intoxicated he was so concerned with ushering people out the door so that he could go into the back room with some drunk female stragglers that he began insulting the patrons still inside at 2:00am. He began yelling at us and insulting us. I'm not sure if he was so drunk that he didn't remember who we were or if he just didn't care about professionalism anymore. im moving to Joplin from Springfield and i was researching places to hang out and i noticed people are still crying about smoking sections look i came to springfield from KC and the first thing i noticed was how much more alive the night life was here than in KC and now that they have no smoking in Springfield 3 bars i know have closed and the rest are looking as dead as KC bars please Joplin dont start crying about smokeing its bad for business and bar owners should have the right to run their business however they want.
