I had my reservations that anyone would be able to break my eldest of her extreme fear of water or my youngest of her timidity. But, with her patience and persistence, Ms. Paige had them enjoying the water in no time! We have been swimming year-round with her for the past three years. Not because my children haven't learned how to swim, but because the LOVE it! Paige is unique in that she teaches each child as an individual, working with their own personality style and skill level. Over the years I have seen her interact with many different children. She has a gift with special needs kids. She can accomodate unusual requests, like blending groups of swimmers so that siblings and friends can be in the same class, if desired. To me, learning to swim is as important as wearing a seat belt. It is a life-saving skill every child needs to learn. Ms. Paige will not only teach your child how to stay safe around water, but she will teach him/her to love swimming.

Some of the things we like:…read more -Lessons are semi-private, meaning there are only 2 kids in the class. -Classes are held in a private residential pool that is clean and shaded. -There are three different seating areas where parents/families can sit to watch the lesson. At least one area is always in the shade. -We work with Kale. Since he is also a school teacher, he understands how to be calm and encouraging, yet firm and disciplined. We have never had Anne as our instructor, but she handles the business end of it, and has always been friendly and organized. I think very highly of their character. -Students swim for the ENTIRE thirty minutes. They never waste time sitting on the step waiting for someone else to take a turn. ***This is very different from the large swim school we tried last year. The classes were so big that only 10-15 minutes was spent swimming. The rest of the time was spent sitting on the step waiting for the other kids to take their turns. - While the instructor (Kale) works with one child privately, he gives the other child an assignment or task to work on independently. Examples of independent tasks for a beginner: putting face underwater on the step to grab fish; wearing a flotation device to practice scooping; and using a barbell to kick from one side of the pool to the other. -The price is very reasonable. They have several recreation centers with indoor pools. The one at Oak Point is the closest to me, so go here even though my membership is good at all of Plano's recreation centers. The first time I tried this out, I bought a one month pass for $33. That's the cost if you are not a resident of Plano. After enjoying my weekly experience swimming here, I decided to invest in an annual membership. It's over $200 for non-residents, but since my city doesn't have an indoor pool available year round for residents, this is my only option. This is an olympic sized pool, but the lap lanes are lined for the short course of 25 yards instead of the long course of 50 yards. Thank goodness because I'm horribly out of shape. I love that when I come, I can usually split the lane with someone. It's rarely crowded, and plenty of people are lucky enough to get a lane to themselves. There is usually a lane reserved for water walking. Sometimes there are other activities that take place and many of the lanes are closed for reserved groups like swim team or water aerobics classes. This pool also features a deep end with a diving board. On the other side, there is a jungle gym obstacle course pool area. Off to the side is a shallow toddler pool. Outside there are two more pools! One of the outside pools has a shore entrance and periodically a horn sounds to let you know that some wave action is about to start. The two outdoor pools are popular with kids and families. During the summer months, the outdoor pools are open every day. After Labor Day, I think they are only open on the weekends. My membership allows me access to other Plano recreational facilities. Also, there is a gym inside Oak Point with free weights, weight machines, and cardio equipment like treadmills. I haven't even been into the gym yet. Not sure I ever will. I'm just so happy to be able to swim year around in the indoor pool.

The bathrooms don't appear to be maintained and the same goes for the changing rooms. Visibly dirty floors are the biggest offender by the pool, bathroom and changing area. Quality of lessons? Employees are disengaged. I question staff training because there seems to be no consistency. On several occasions I have observed staff flirting with each other instead of teaching class, playing water games with each other and distracting students to name a few examples. The staff and teachers are nice and friendly. The establishment is clean. But there were three…read morethings that I didn't care for- Firstly, scheduling can be quite hit or miss. I often had to leave a message or email, which made communication delayed and sometimes frustrating. Secondly, I recorded portions of each lesson. And honestly- the last lesson (after two months of lessons) was exactly the same as the first. I had to ask for the teacher to challenge my daughter and to show her how to kick her legs, not just say "kick, kick, kick... good," when she didn't kick! I wish they had a progress card with set goals. They had "scripts" for each week... but there was zero progress. Thirdly, the commitment to an entire semester was our breaking point. You can do month to month, but it costs more. So it wasn't a bad experience... but it wasn't great. And for the tuition... I'd really like to see the teacher encouraging progress- not stay comfortable with stagnation.
