Reserving this campground is tricky. Exactly 60 days in advance of your desired trip, you must be on recreation.gov at 6am (if you're in CA) and have in mind a handful of spots that you'd like to park your tent. In fact, it's a good idea to check online which spots might potentially be available a few days before you actually book. If you make a mistake while reserving, may the good Lord have mercy on you because corrections are more difficult than the reservation itself. Camping in Blackwoods is pleasant, clean, spacious, has respectful guests, and plenty of trees to tie up a canopy to protect from the sudden rain showers. With much to like, there's quite a bit of inconvenience. Having no showers on the premises is my biggest gripe. After hiking for most of the day, there's no getting around needing a shower. If you drive (that's right, drive) down the road a little ways outside the campground, there's a place that sells showers for $3 in quarters (that's 12 quarters) for 4 minutes. Apparently, you can obtain 12 quarters with a credit card, but reviewers warned that sometimes the machine is out of order so BYOQ. While Blackwoods asks that you only bring local wood for campfires (within a 50 mile radius), our party found the local firewood (which can be purchased at the shower place or across the street from the shower place) too wet from the frequent showers. Thus, making a campfire was challenging and frustrating even for our resident Eagle Scout. Undeniably, the restrooms are clean, but I found myself without toilet paper in some of the stalls. Luckily, a friend was able to hand me some TP. Speaking of paper, there are no hand towels or soap in the bathroom; however, I did see one outlet in the bathroom that some were using to charge their phones. Another inconvenience is that there is no dishwash station. In fact, not only do you wash your dishes at your camping site by walking to the spigot to get water (make your own hot water), but you have to walk to a different and farther station to dump your dishwater out so as to not clog the pipes with food. When it comes to dishwashing, there's a lot of walking back and forth. Get your 2 buckets. Get some water for washing and another for rinsing. Walk back to camp site. Heat up the water. Wash your dishes. Rinse your dishes. Walk to wash water disposal. Walk back to camp site. For entertainment, the amphitheater had nightly presentations. On one occasion, we attended one on animals in the park, but at the first sound of thunder, the ranger called it and we all had to go back to our camp sites. Surprisingly, our campground and Acadia NP in general was bereft of animals. Living in the suburbs of CA, one can see more wildlife than in Acadia NP. Before arriving at the NP, I had full intentions of using the free shuttles, but the shuttle schedules and transfers could cost you hours of time so we opted to drive our own car and brave the limited parking. Camping successfully at Blackwoods requires grit and determination. If you got it, go for it. read more

We stayed here on the B Loop 54 and loved the location. This campsite is more isolated and spread out than others. We walked around the other campsites and they were quite close to each other and not as much privacy. The Picnic table at our campsite could be updated. The Campsite overall has a fairly flat area and plenty of space for our 6 person tent, coleman tent over the picnic table and chairs. The check in process was easy and directions to our campsite were easy to follow from the map they gave us. Note, there is a water station next to the check in house (we only found about it on our last day). You will have to get firewood (easily found as you come into Acadia), ice ($4-5 a bag) and shower (practically outside the campground for 1.75 cents for 1 min 45 sec of shower ...add 25cents for extra 15 seconds). The bathrooms are clean. The only thing was that they ask you not to was at the sink ; rather bring water to your campsite, wash it there and just bring back the dirty water for disposal - bring a water bucket or two. The campground is very centrally located and we found ourselves only about 20 minutes or less from all the places we wanted to go to. read more

Blackwoods is the perfect campground when visiting Acadia. Each site has it's own level of privacy and benefits to it's location. This is only our second time camping at Blackwoods but it starts to feel like home after a few nights. Some of the perks include: running water spigots, dish washing stations, dumpsters throughout the driveways, sheltered bathrooms with flushing toilets and sinks to wash hands. I love hearing the ocean at night and getting up to stargaze on the ocean cliffs. You will never forget seeing the incredibly dark sky over the ocean once you experience it at Acadia. read more

Acadia is pretty incredible. Staying inside the park at the campground is the best way to experience it. The sites were clean and you felt like you were actually camping in the woods and not parked somewhere with trees. No hookups at this campground, so you need to rely on your tanks and battery's if your RV'ing. The campground had an awesome theater but sadly no movies or productions taking place when we were there (fourth of July week) Overall nice, but wish they had something for the little ones. read more

This campground is located in the heart of Acadia and is close to everything we wanted to see! Some things were a bit of a drive like Bar Harbor but it was beautiful driving through the entire area! There are many trailheads that start from Blackwoods which is super convenient. Cadillac mountain is one of them which I believe you need a permit to enter because of the large amount of people who want to do it. The campground did not have showers but it had very clean restrooms and a separate room for washing dishes. Our site was a small way away from the car which was inconvenient as we have a rooftop tent too but we made it work. I would 100% come back here! Great place to see the stars too. read more

We had a great time at this campground. Super clean and organized with nice restroom facilities and clearly marked places to dispose of trash and food scraps. It's beautiful here and the campground is located in a lovely part of the park. It's also near the trailhead for the South Ridge Cadillac Mountain hike, which was a tough hike with lots of elevation gains and rocks, but very rewarding and just an absolutely beautiful hike. Drive your car down to the road where you enter the campground and park alongside the road, the trailhead is about 100 feet as you exit the campground to the left. There is also a little path to a pretty lookout over the water - it seems like there might be a trial there, but either we didn't find it or there isn't one, but the path to the lookout is wonderful - we went to it at night with headlamps and it was really cool to go out there at night (it was overcast the day we were there so not sure if it's a good star viewing location or not). Despite the huge campground (+300 sites), it is quiet and nice. Each site has picnic table, fire ring. Enough space to the next campsite. Restroom is clean and have light all night. I think that the fee is quite high compared to other places such as California: that's the only minus point. read more

We didn't know for sure what day we would be in the area, so we did not book a campsite in advance of our vacation. As we got closer to Acadia National Park, we eventually figured out what day we'd be there, but we figured it was going to be crowded and we'd have no chance of getting a reservation. We lucked out! We literally got the very last campsite available, we must have logged on at just the right moment, three days in advance of arrival. So be sure to check the info on when reservations are available. It was a great site. Level, near the clean bathroom, in a lovely woodland and not too close to neighboring campsites, if you kind of like a bit of privacy. They're close, but you're not right on top of each other. We had great neighbors next to us, they came over and said hello when they saw our license plate and realized we were from the same home state. Very, very poor Verizon cell service, though. We didn't use the showers, so can't comment on that. It was quiet during the night. read more

Awesome location, with trailheads to Cadillac and Quarry (to Otter Cove) just outside the campgrounds. Many trailheads were also just a quick drive away. Check in/out were easy (reservations required). Bathrooms were very clean. No showers within the grounds but just outside a few min drive there was a coin operated hot shower for $2/4 minutes. There were multiple showers, and we didn't ever have to wait, even when it seemed pretty busy. Also super clean. Firewood and ice sold there, and Otter Creek Inn down the street sold general goods (including beer and ice cream sandwiches) for a decent price. We stayed in B22, technically a 20ft RV site but it was one of the only few sites left when we reserved in June for late July. Pitching a tent in the space was no problem. In general was actually pretty quiet at night as well. Check in at noon, check out by 10am. Would stay there again, but would aim to reserve much earlier next time to get a larger selection of sites. read more

My boyfriend and I tented at Blackwoods from 7/30-8/3/16 and very much enjoyed our stay. The location within Acadia was perfect for what we wanted to do. We were able to walk directly to a few trail heads and had relatively short drives to the other areas we wanted to hike. The campground was also very close to Bar Harbor. We wanted to take the Island Explorer shuttle as opposed to driving, but the schedule and routes made it inconvenient for our purposes. The site itself had ample room for our tent and canopy without being too close to other sites. The quiet hours (10-8) were mostly adhered too (very loud neighbors kept me up until 12 one night- but after speaking with Rangers was assured they would keep a watch on the noisemakers). I was beyond impressed with the cleanliness of the bathrooms. However, I was apprehensive about the showers being outside the campground but they were very accessible and more or less a non issue for us. The shower facility itself was also very clean, but I found the prices quite high, even for coin-op showers- they cost $2 for 4 minutes, and there is no option to put in less than $2. So if you needed an extra minute or two at the end of your shower, there is no way to insert 50 cents or another dollar, only $2 for 4 more minutes. read more

We were here in mid-September during the middle of the week. I hear the crowds on Mount Desert Island during the summer weekends are absolutely brutal and I believe it. Blackwoods is a very big campground and I imagine that it must be pretty busy during peak season. But it was great during our stay. On the 1 to 10 scale of wilderness camping with 1 being "park your RV on a slab of concrete" and 10 being "backpacking 12 miles to a spot in the middle of the woods" Blackwoods is a solid 7. Our site was perfectly sized, not too close to our neighbors, had plenty of tree cover, and was very clean. It was perfectly located next to the park loop road, the ocean, the hiking trails around Jordan Pond, several carriage roads, and Cadilac Mountain. The second best thing about the campground was how quiet it was. Dinner time was peaceful and after dark the only sounds were from the campfires. Quiet hour began at 10, but as we looked around at our neighbors at 9 we realized that most of the other folks were already heading into bed. With so many outdoor activity options in Acadia, most of the campers were up before first light to get a jump on the day so the nights were beautifully quiet. The best thing about the campground is its proximity to the ocean. We could hear the faint sounds of the waves crashing from our tent. Our site was also very close to an ocean path making it less than a quarter mile walk down to the cliffs overlooking the water. Both nights we were here we walked down and enjoyed the sites and sounds of the ocean. Few camping areas manage to combine the wooded wilderness with the ocean as well as Blackwoods. I highly recomend trying for a low numbered site in the A loop for this reason. Negatives? Bring an air matress or a thick sleeping bag because you're setting up your tent on a bed of gravel. Also the showers are located outside the campground and not inside. read more

This is the closer of the two campgrounds that are affiliated with Acadia National Park. This campground is located only a 5 to 10 minute drive from an entrance to the Park Loop Rd. The other campground, Seawall Campground, is much farther away on the other side of Mount Desert Island. With that said this is obviously the more popular of the two campgrounds and fills up fast in the summer. Book your reservations early. Unfortunately this campground has no electrical or water hookups and there are no showers. They do have bathrooms with running water and I must say that these bathrooms are kept very clean. In order to take a shower there is a shower house right outside of the entrance to the campground that has pay showers. You definitely are going to want to drive to these showers as it is about a mile in distance from the campsite areas to them. The park rangers working here were all very nice and helpful and the ranger station has a lot of maps and information pamphlets available. My favorite thing by far about this campground was the ocean path. The ocean path leads from the camping area straight down across the Park Loop Rd and to a cliff overlooking the ocean. Its a really easy and quick walk too. Great views to be had there. read more

Acadia! You made it! Congratulations.. now give us $20 more dollars. Make sure you read the fine print on your reservation confirmation. While your site cost is only $20, you need to cough up another $20 more at the gate for a weekly "US National Park Valid Parking Entry Pass." Yes, you're site didn't come with free parking. Just a little FYI. So, for your $40 you get a pretty cool site. They are all on one-way loops. A large tree canopy and clean bathrooms made the experience nice. THERE ARE NO SHOWERS HERE! You'll have to exit the park to a quarter-eating pay facility to wash up. There isn't much to do in the campgrounds besides hang by your own domain, so if you have kids, they might get bored. All in all, a great time camping, but very vague online check-out process. read more

Blackwoods is excellent! When booking our first trip to Acadia, friends recommended Mt. Desert Campgrounds. We researched Mt. Desert, Blackwoods and Seawall, and opted for Blackwoods. It was exactly what we'd hoped it would be--clean campground with reasonably-sized sites and trees to insulate the sites from one another. It was several hundred dollars cheaper than Mt. Desert Campgrounds (@ $20 per night versus $60), and I didn't feel that we sacrificed at all for the savings. Granted, this campground does not have shower facilities inside the camp (they are across the street and down the road a bit from the entrance to the campground) but the bathroom facilities were clean, the neighboring campers were all polite and mostly quiet after 9ish (as another reviewer mentioned) and Blackwoods is very close to Jordan Pond and some of the other classic Acadia siteseeing. The sites themselves are gravel and somewhat rocky. We had a bit of a challenge staking our tent, but if you're persisent and bring a mat or air mattress, you should be fine. One of the best moments of our camping trip happened while at our campsite: it was late morning and we had just returned from washing our dishes. While in the tent getting ready to start our day, we heard saxophone music drifting through the trees. Balckwoods has an outdoor stage and regularly scheduled events on site. It was a very romantic moment, and totally unplanned. I know it will be remembered as the highlight of the trip. Although our trip ended earlier than planned (they evacuated the campground due to Hurricane Irene), I am very much looking forward to returning to Acadia and Blackwoods in the future! read more

Blackwoods Campgrounds is an excellent campsite. If all you're looking to do is relax and camp out for a few days, this is the place to do it. Some of the lots are small, some of them are a bit bigger. It all boils down to the reservation you make online. When I first started going here, I thought that neighbors were right on top of you and it was intrusive. However it was my mind playing tricks on me. There's plenty of privacy and space between sites. Sure it's not like going to a KOA or another family run site, but this is run by the US Parks Service, so it gets the job done. They say you have to be there by a certain time to check in, but I've noticed (coming from NJ) it doesn't really matter if you get there after check in. Sometimes the line is long to check in, but 95% of the time it's not. There are evening campfire programs (never been to one, can't tell you about it), and the L.L. Bean Island Explorer leaves from the main entrance which is an excellent alternative to driving yourself around. It also holds bicycles for those that enjoy bringing them along. Seawall Campground is also a nice alternative in case this one is full! Strongly recommended that you make reservations ahead of schedule! read more

This was my first time camping and I had a pleasant experience at Blackwoods. Each campsite can fit 2 tents easily and has a firepit for camp fires. There are bathrooms nearby that were clean and well stocked during my stay, although it appears they do not have cleaners on the weekends. Showers are about 1 mile from the campgrounds as well as a small market. The park staff was pleasant and attentive. Quiet time is at 10 PM and it appears that park staff will enforce these rules when needed and can/will address the rowdier groups so don't be afraid to speak up if needed. I loved the feeling of being in nature and enjoyed the fact that the ocean was nearby as well. There is a nice little trail that begins near the entrance of the camp and takes you down to the ocean that I recommend checking out, perfect for a quick morning stroll. All in all, this was the perfect site for a newbie camper. read more

Reservations are hard to get during the peak season, so reserve online early. Or, do what I did and just keep checking the reservation website multiple times a day hoping that a party will cancel. The campsites are close together, but I didn't have any problems with neighbors or noise. Some good ear plugs and being tired from hiking during the day was all I needed to sleep comfortably. Like others have said, bring an air mattress - the ground is rocky. Also, there's no electric hook ups, but when you are there, you should enjoy being close to nature any way. I was there for three nights, but could have spent more time at Acadia. There is a lot to do. The campground is also on one of the bus stops (as well as many other campgrounds), which is pretty convenient considering parking can be difficult to find in Bar Harbor in the evenings. Also, parking in Acadia is also horrendous, which makes staying in the campground better, if you plan to go hiking early. You'll be able to find parking and quiet time on the mountains. (Note: You'll see blueberries on the mountainside. Pick as many as you want - Seriously! - that's what we were told by a ranger. You can pick up to a gallon a day!) The facilities at the campground are minimal. The bathrooms at the campground have just toilets and sinks and the water is cold. The bathrooms aren't really cleaned all that often either (at least compared to the sate park campgrounds in Virginia that I've been to) but they are fine to use. I brought facial cleansing pads to wash my face at night. To shower, there is a pay facility outside the campground (driving distance). This facility is clean with ample hot water and electricity to dry your hair. If you are looking for a cheap place and don't mind "roughing it" Blackwoods is a good choice. Camping meant we had more money to spend on lobsters! I really enjoyed my stay at Blackwoods and, we wouldn't have spent much time in a hotel room, so this was a great value and choice for us. read more

This was a great campground! Mt. Desert Island is a bit of a strange combination of super-inhabited residential areas and wilderness. Blackwoods is far enough away from the towns that you feel isolated, but close enough to drive in for a beer and some civilization. It's a popular place; all 250+ campsites were booked up when I was there, many with families and bigger groups. It's lively at dinner and breakfast time, but everyone was pretty respectful and well-behaved. Best: Lovely views of the night sky, easy access to hiking and Cadillac Mountain, flushing toilets (!!) strewn about the campground, water pump access. Hot showers (with bill changer) a quick drive (or longer walk) away from the campground. Metal firepits at every campsite. Negligible negatives: Campsites are gravel, as others have mentioned. Tough to create a soft enough place to sleep without padding, so bring an extra couple of layers. Sites are drive-in, which is great in some respects and less great in others. Make sure to bring an odor-proof container to keep critters away from your vehicle...which is right next to your tent. (That said, I didn't have any problems.) read more

An excellent location for an excellent campground. It's light on amenities (the way it should be!) but it has most of the basics (garbage disposal, bathrooms, fire pit, a bench), and though the sites are a little close together you still feel relatively secluded as there are no artificial lights, aside from what other campers are giving off and the interior of the bathrooms, and you can't hear cars. There's nothing but beautiful, rare silence, only minimally interrupted by intermittent sounds of zippers and steady 20-second streams of... water, a lot or two over. This is the prime spot to camp if you want to be near all the main attractions in Acadia. read more

This was only my second time car camping and this campsite was great. My first time car camping was in Yosemite valley where the campsites are practically on top of each other. I was expecting something similar here, but it was more spaced out. Even though you could see plenty of other campsites, each spot seemed to have more privacy. Noise from neighbors wasn't a problem. We were on the edge of the B-loop (B 124) which was just fine, didn't seem to be special compared to any of the other sites. A short walk to surprisingly clean bathrooms with running cold water and a spigot to fill up water bottles. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill over it. We checked in around 9:30pm on a Saturday night and the rangers were still there to answer our questions which was pretty nice. Blackwoods is close to everything in Acadia which makes it a great spot to camp. read more

Have been staying here almost annually for 20+ years. any problems we have ever had were from other campers, not the staff or the campground itself. As it is a national park campground it is quieter, close to nature camping. no playgrounds, arcades pools etc. also no hookups. stay away from group site located in lower B loop and "generator alley" as we call it (the pull through sites in middle A loop for all the big rigs) About 10 minutes from bar harbor, has a great ocean path that leads right down to the cliffs. loud campers have been our only problem and rangers are quick to deal with complaints. no hot water in bathrooms, no showers in the campground but located right across the street for a fee. read more

The pricing is misleading. It's $20/night when you make reservations, but when you get there you have to pay an additional $20/per vehicle. for the Park fee It does NOT state any where on their website about having to pay a park fee. It's not a bad camping experiences as long as you don't mind being cozy with your neighbors. Campsites are very close together, but the bathrooms are clean. It was also very family friendly. They seem to have a lot of rules too... Regardless of the additional cost, it's a great value. It's conveniently located near bar harbor and Acadia National Park. There's lots of great hikes nearby and incredible views. It would have been nice if they A) Built the Park fee into the camping fee or B) Clearly stated the Park fee before making reservations. read more

Checked in on a Thursday night after dark in the rain. We were the third in line to check in and I was surprised at how long it took. From when we pulled up to when we pulled out was over 20 minutes. The young man working the office had zero personality and wasn't super friendly. We were there when the campground was about half full. We reserved 2 spots for our 2 families at the same time, on the same credit card, yet he made it seem like we were putting him out because we wanted spots next to each other and they refused us (group of 7 plus 2 dogs) a group spot. It was annoying that he seemed to want to be a bit difficult. We were given 2 spots across from each other on B loops, near the bathrooms which was helpful with 3 children. Our sites were level and good sized. We did notice that some sites are on an incline and are much smaller. We have large tents and needed large sites. Our picnic table wasn't very sturdy and could use some tightening. The ground is very rocky gravel. Defintely put a tarp under your tent and DO NOT sleep directly on the ground without a pad or air mattress. Even kneeling to assist my toddler in dressing was defintely hurting my knees. The bathrooms were clean and I was very happy about the flush toilets. No soaps, paper towels or hand dryers, so bring your own soap and hand towel. Our site was VERY close to the site next to us, with only a couple of trees, but some sites had a lot of trees and more privacy between them. Quiet hours between 10pm - 8am were mostly followed, although 8am is late for quiet time, especially when so many people were up and talking and slamming car doors and driving off at 5am to drive to see the sunrise. Most campers were up and at their sites making breakfast no later than 7am, but on the flip side, most were in their tents with lights out before 9pm. Check out at 10am seems very early when you have to pack up an entire site. A check out time of noon seems more appropriate. There wasn't anything going on while we were there during the second weekend of September. The weather was cooler (between 50-65 degrees), which made it a nice time to be there, not so crowded. Coin Ops showers at the entrance of the campground were decent, my brother's family told us, and a little market down the street had basics, firewood, ice and hot coffee in the morning. The quick drive to Bar Harbor was a bonus. Park Loop road was annoying to get to from the Campground because Rt 3 goes over it and you have to drive down to Seal Harbor to access it, which is kind of a pain. However, Blackwoods is closer to everything than Sewell's Campground is. This was our first time at Blackwoods and we will most likely be back. read more

I have stayed at Blackwoods twice this summer and have had a wonderful experience each time. The staff was very accommodating when I requested a different site due to difficulty backing in my pop up. Just reading BK's 2 star review dated 8/24/14 and I couldn't disagree more about this facility. Yes, the sites are fairly close together but no more than any similar campground which is why I appreciate the denseness of the foliage. The ranger station is at the main entrance and the rangers are extremely helpful supplying hiking advice, maps, weather and tide information and yes there were ranger led programs every other evening I was there. Abundant and clean restrooms! One of the best features of this campground is its proximity to the Cadillac Mountain South trail trailhead. Don't hesitate to visit this campground...better make a reservation though. read more

Blackwoods is a seriously overgrown forest. Seriously. Compared to other campsites in Maine, you'll see less wildlife because the forest is so overgrown. In 3 days, I saw a couple of ground squirrels; I saw more wildlife in one night on a friend's farm outside of Rockport, ME. The campgrounds are a bit tight. My neighbor's big campfire was bright enough to keep me up late one night. Most importantly, there is no ranger station and no events at Blackwoods. Or at least, there was none when I was there in late May. Such a bummer because park rangers/interpreters can do so much to enhance the National Park experience. I just wanted someone to ask about all the various types of trees that were present. I would have loved to have someone suggest a great place to go for a trail run. I'm staying in the National Park campground because I want that National Park experience. To me, a ranger station is the very foundation of that experience. Coffee with the ranger at 6am? Yes, please! Late night star gazing during a moonless-week? Sounds fantastic. A quick question about a plant I saw (as small animals are pretty much missing from the park) shouldn't require me to drive through town, onto the loop and to a ranger station. I should be able to stop by on my way to my tent. read more

We spent a night at Blackwoods had a great roomiecampsite. The bathrooms are clean I wish they did a better job of pointing out that they do not have showers. The good news is that about a mile away a private business outside the campground offers a nice clean place to get a warm shower and do your laundry. The sad news is that the campsite is cheap at $20 a night but the showers cost my family of 6 $12. I loved the private business but wish my $12 went to the campground. Awesome place to stay. An entirely different world with clean bathroom, enough of water and friendly Rangers, Staff, always nearby. I was at the campground from 11th till the 14th of September, 2013 with my family. We placed our tent right, bought some firewood and collected some wet wood from nearby the campground hand a ton of fun lighting fire and working out with our campfire cooking. Surprisingly everything turned out to be the best of the best food we prepared. The second day was bit bothering with light drizzle so we ate lunch outside. At around 11:00 AM just before leaving, I realized my daughter had somehow drained my car batteries and it was not ready to start. Internet friendly people or cell phone callers "this is not the right place to visit", I wanted to be away from messages and calls so for me this was the best place, but what to do with the car in no-ignition state? I went to the rangers office at the campground entrance and just mentioned about my car batteries drained out problem. One of the rangers asked me to go back to my camp and he will be there to help me. It was just a matter of minutes the officer was at my campsite, helped me to start the car with a jump starter and we were out withing minutes of diagnosing the battery drain out problem. I offered the ranger some gift, but he declined and said he is happy to see us happy in his campground, Awesome. We loved the park and our first visit to Acadia has become memorable. The neighbors were nice (having much colorful tents) and we often exchanged hello. I will certainly visit Acadia and stay at Blackwoods, hopefully next time for a greater number of days. Stayed from 9/11 - 9/14 '14. Staff was friendly, facilities were clean and well stocked. There isn't a shower in the campground but there is one literally just outside of it, $2 for 4 minutes, they also sell firewood for $3 a bundle. Park was very clean and other campers were respectful. read more
