We spent four nights at this campgrounds a few weeks back for our summer vacation. This was our first time visiting Acadia and staying at these grounds, so we didn't know what to expect. We ended up enjoying our stay, but a few things irked us while we were here. Here are some of the positive aspects; 1. We ended up staying at site D68 which was in the "walk-in" camp loop. Our site was located near the parking area and bathrooms unlike other in the loop. This was great because we didn't need to haul all of our items far and the bathrooms were close. 2. The walk to the ocean was short and the views were incredible. 3. The overall camping experience was great and it was nice to have a fire ring as well as a grill. Here are some of the negative aspects; 1. While checking in I stood in line for about ten minutes but got cut by an entitled couple who walked in and started making the counter their home. The ranger didn't seem to care and didn't apologize after having me wait for another ten minutes (of course they had a ton of questions.) We also never saw a ranger unless they were at the check-in office. 2. I love children and have never had an issue with sharing campgrounds with younger people, but camping here made me mad. The children surrounding our campsite cried or yelled until 10/11pm and were back at it by 6:30/7am. 3. At one point since our camp site was near the parking lot random campers decided to walk through our site instead of going around. Talk about rude when you are trying to enjoy your campfire. Also, one night a car alarm went off and the owner never shut it off because his site must have been so far into the woods that he didn't hear it. We did though. These issues aside, we would stay here again but may try the other Acadia site on our next visit. Also final tip, if staying here buy wood before you come. We bought some from a few shacks along the road and a few of them wouldn't burn regardless of what we did. This made our camp fire a smoke machine.

Very nice campground on the "Quietside" of Mount Desert Island. If you want to be near most of the attractions of Arcadia park, or close to Bar Harbor, this is not the place for you as it is about a 20-30 min drive. I personally loved the drive and enjoyed being away from the crowds. Unfortunately our walk-up campsite on D-Loop (D34) was very close to our neighbors, and that was a little bit of a bummer for me. Neighbors here, neighbors there, neighbors everywhere. It seems from reading other peoples' reviews there are more private campsites, so perhaps I would consider staying here again but on a different loop. I also may be spoiled and used to hiking camping, perhaps this is normal for car camping. Not having cars pull into each site was nice, but the tree coverage was nonexistent between camping sites. This place would definitely be great for groups. Park rangers were very friendly, and the bathrooms were fantastic, even if I could hear the occasional flush of a toilet from my campsite. The ocean is right across the road from the entrance from the campgrounds, but I never heard it from inside the grounds. Very dog friendly campgrounds with clean, respectful campers. Showering up the road was easy (open from 8AM-8PM, $1 for 2 mins) and the store with the showers had lots of things for sale like bug spray at reasonable prices. Fire wood was easy to buy from road side stands for $2-3 bucks depending on the stand. Southwest Harbor is a cutie town a very short drive away with one or two restaurants, a fancy supermarket, and a great bar (The Upper Deck). A little closer to camp you can get fantastic pop overs in the morning at Common Grounds and phenomenal lobster rolls at Sawyer's Lobster Pound. A llitle further up the road past the main strip of Southwest Harbor there is a supermarket (IGA) and gas station. Overall great location, just not much campsite privacy on D loop.

Great campground. Highly recommended! We stayed there for a long weekend at the end of July! Things we likes: -the wooden paths were very easy to follow in the walk in sites and it was really nice to not have cars right next to your tent - the low key vibe and quiet atmosphere despite it being high season - it's cheap!! 12/a night - clean bathrooms -a wheel borrow available to get your stuff to the site initially -friendly park rangers! -eccentric camp store just outside the campground with hot showers! -the rocky beach beach across from the campground for star gazing! Things we didn't like: -no hand soap in the bathroom- there is running water and hand sanitizer but no soap, that doesn't make sense to me - you are supposed to wash your dishes at the campsite however we didn't being a tub to wash with and they don't tell you this so plan ahead with your cookware and dish washing options. All in all I wish I was still there and not writing this on the way home:)

Our campground was private, clean, and spacious. Bathrooms were clean but I do wish there were showers. That would really make a difference.

My kids loved the pool which proved to be stiff competition to all the hiking and site seeing in Acadia. Smuggler's is very dog friendly to those dogs on a leash. They give you lobster, pot, salt, shell crackers and plenty of advice if you've never cooked a lobster before. You just need your own butter. All for $7 a pound! (August 2018) In all a really great place to make memories. As I write this, I think they're even having some sort of entertainment tonight with hot dogs and music. I can hear some trumpet player warming up! Very cool. We'll be back here for sure!

In fact, it's a good idea to check online which spots might potentially be available a few days before you actually book. If you make a mistake while reserving, may the good Lord have mercy on you because corrections are more difficult than the reservation itself. Camping in Blackwoods is pleasant, clean, spacious, has respectful guests, and plenty of trees to tie up a canopy to protect from the sudden rain showers. With much to like, there's quite a bit of inconvenience. Having no showers on the premises is my biggest gripe. After hiking for most of the day, there's no getting around needing a shower. If you drive (that's right, drive) down the road a little ways outside the campground, there's a place that sells showers for $3 in quarters (that's 12 quarters) for 4 minutes. Apparently, you can obtain 12 quarters with a credit card, but reviewers warned that sometimes the machine is out of order so BYOQ. While Blackwoods asks that you only bring local wood for campfires (within a 50 mile radius), our party found the local firewood (which can be purchased at the shower place or across the street from the shower place) too wet from the frequent showers. Thus, making a campfire was challenging and frustrating even for our resident Eagle Scout. Undeniably, the restrooms are clean, but I found myself without toilet paper in some of the stalls. Luckily, a friend was able to hand me some TP. Speaking of paper, there are no hand towels or soap in the bathroom; however, I did see one outlet in the bathroom that some were using to charge their phones. Another inconvenience is that there is no dishwash station. In fact, not only do you wash your dishes at your camping site by walking to the spigot to get water (make your own hot water), but you have to walk to a different and farther station to dump your dishwater out so as to not clog the pipes with food. When it comes to dishwashing, there's a lot of walking back and forth. Get your 2 buckets. Get some water for washing and another for rinsing. Walk back to camp site. Heat up the water. Wash your dishes. Rinse your dishes. Walk to wash water disposal. Walk back to camp site. For entertainment, the amphitheater had nightly presentations. On one occasion, we attended one on animals in the park, but at the first sound of thunder, the ranger called it and we all had to go back to our camp sites. Surprisingly, our campground and Acadia NP in general was bereft of animals. Living in the suburbs of CA, one can see more wildlife than in Acadia NP. Before arriving at the NP, I had full intentions of using the free shuttles, but the shuttle schedules and transfers could cost you hours of time so we opted to drive our own car and brave the limited parking. Camping successfully at Blackwoods requires grit and determination. If you got it, go for it.

We stayed July 4th weekend and when we booked in January this was one of the last tent sites available. Granted it was July 4th, but still something to think about. There are a few lucky tent sites that overlook the water which would be incredible. Maybe next time we can book earlier and snag one. Each site has everything you will need -- a platform for your tent (perfect incase it rains), an electrical outlet, running water, a picnic table and a firepit. It is clean and well-kept, and you are never too far from a bathroom / shower facility. Just note that the shower is $1 for 5 minutes and you'll need quarters. There is a main house where you can buy wood and other supplies. During non-covid times they also have a gathering place where you can buy snacks. I believe the rate is around $50 dollars a night but I'm not sure if the rate changes depending on the weekend, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was higher than normal over July 4th. This is a wonderful campsite and I'd happily return. In comparison, I've also camped at the Oceanside KOA in Bar Harbor and this campsite is way better. Be sure to check it out!
