we can't say enough wonderful things about this campsite! First, let me say I'm a new camper and more of a glamper! I say to emphasize how special this place is. The owner, Lori, is amazing. She has an incredible attention to detail and has thought of so many little details for comfort: an outdoor shower, big enough for two, with room to change, along with an added foot ledge for ladies to shave (!), two indoor showers, an indoor sink with mirror and outlet for hairdryer. ice and wood for purchase. You can even order lobster a day ahead of time and they will be delivered, fresh caught! Lori has a lobster pot for you to cook on campfire! A sweet woman, Judy, cleans the bathrooms daily and empties all the trash cans onsite. I'm telling you, the place is so clean! There's an outdoor dishwashing station at the office along with super clean black/brown water disposal, easy access to potable water hose. The latrine's are so nice, spacious, clean! A mirror, hand sanitizer and trash can both inside and out. They are perfectly spaced out and convenient. I haven't even mentioned the views or the beach yet!! We loved our location. Site has electric hook up, fire pit and picnic table (wood, not plastic as you find at some sites). There are Adirondack chairs in a field above the water to enjoy the view. We watched the sunset there and then back later to star gaze. We brought paddle boards and easily navigated them to the beach. The waters were great for boarding. This will be the gold standard for me on future camping!

We stayed July 4th weekend and when we booked in January this was one of the last tent sites available. Granted it was July 4th, but still something to think about. There are a few lucky tent sites that overlook the water which would be incredible. Maybe next time we can book earlier and snag one. Each site has everything you will need -- a platform for your tent (perfect incase it rains), an electrical outlet, running water, a picnic table and a firepit. It is clean and well-kept, and you are never too far from a bathroom / shower facility. Just note that the shower is $1 for 5 minutes and you'll need quarters. There is a main house where you can buy wood and other supplies. During non-covid times they also have a gathering place where you can buy snacks. I believe the rate is around $50 dollars a night but I'm not sure if the rate changes depending on the weekend, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was higher than normal over July 4th. This is a wonderful campsite and I'd happily return. In comparison, I've also camped at the Oceanside KOA in Bar Harbor and this campsite is way better. Be sure to check it out!

Camp wood and lobster pots were supplied for cooking lobster & marshmallows at the campsite, though the wood was not well seasoned & smoked a lot. I've also seen deer & hawks in the campground and they are beautiful to watch. There is potable water, electric hook up and a dump station. All the fellow campers I've met at this campground were friendly and helpful and Troy & Monica White are great hosts. Troy goes out of his way to meet his campers & their needs. There is a great little market about 8 min. away called Burnt Cove Market where you can get anything you need including gas, ice, groceries & a bottle of wine. I have enjoyed this campground two years in a row and there are plenty of things to do and see on & around Deer Isle and Stonington including Nellieville, a must see village of life sized junk people created by sculptor, Peter Beerits (https://www.nervousnellies.com/about-us/). There is also an enlightening presentation on the history of the coastal fishing/lobstering market in Maine given down at Stonington Harbor by Leroy Weed, an engaging and very knowledgeable, lifelong lobsterman. There are harbor cruises (we went with Captain Walker who enjoyed sharing additional history and his upbringing on the harbor), and of course those Maine lobsters, as well as shops, and great food. Will definitely be coming back again in the future!

My kids loved the pool which proved to be stiff competition to all the hiking and site seeing in Acadia. Smuggler's is very dog friendly to those dogs on a leash. They give you lobster, pot, salt, shell crackers and plenty of advice if you've never cooked a lobster before. You just need your own butter. All for $7 a pound! (August 2018) In all a really great place to make memories. As I write this, I think they're even having some sort of entertainment tonight with hot dogs and music. I can hear some trumpet player warming up! Very cool. We'll be back here for sure!

However it's been sold out to a corporation and as it's typical they are only after the $$$. You can not pre book for the following year, and the have a season camp manager, who although very nice has no answers to anything other than call the 1-800 number. We met many ppl over the week we were here and most of them repeat travelers who agree this may be their last year due mainly to the attitude and corporate hospitality, aka none. It's a shame, this was a nice family feel and accommodating camp ground. Our family have been coming here for three generations. The campground itself is pretty much unchangeable, the amenities could be upgraded and spruced up, but we come for the feel of the grounds. The cold corporate feel it's already having is making us think twice sadly.

Told Shirley (the owner) I would be back "next year" to help out, and here I am, Aug. 8th, 2019, sad to leave after spending 4 weeks in the grand teepee, helping out around the camp. Off route 1, into the woods, to grandmama's RV we go! But it is so much more... tent sites, group sites, great trails, and great vibe from the surrounding community. But what you really want to know is; this is a great base for exploring coastal Maine & Downeast. Now understand 2 things... Downeast is on the coast, but when the term 'downeast' is used, it is very much a reference to the culture of the folk who grew up and live here and have also known it through the generations of their family. Once you get here, you're in the thick of what "coastal Maine" really is without the crowds of Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, etc.. from Cottonwood you will find within 20 mins. Never crowded beaches with all the beauty of those other places... and you can also make a day trip of getting to Easport or Calaise and just breath in New Brunswick! Oh yeah, bring your passport... One of the other things I love about camping here, are the various small sites that are suitable for bicyclers and bikers who travel with minimal gear and need to stop for short stays. Even though its right off the road, once in, you're cast into the woods! Oh yeah, and I can't think of another camp with such a great bath house along this route... Cottonwood Camping is truly a great experience and my pick as a base for exploring Downeast, Coastal Maine, the far north on the east side of the U.S. Shirley Cotton makes it happen! She is the BOMB!!

I can honestly say this place was easy to find and very photogenic. Easy to recommend.read more
