They took me as a walk-in on a Friday afternoon and I am so glad they did. It's a large space with a lot of artists and they weren't overly busy (unlike the other spot in town I tried first, which was tiny and overcrowded). I was paired with Joey and he worked with me and gave me advice on my idea. Ended up switching location and design a bit and walked me through everything on his iPad, which was helpful. He was very patient, and once we had the design picked out, everything went quickly. He was friendly and kind, and I'm so glad we met on Friday for this specific tattoo. It was meant to be! My boyfriend and my best friend surprised me and flew out my best friend to visit me for my birthday, we have been waiting two years to get matching friendship tattoos and found this tattoo shop that could take us as a walk in, not to mention this was the only place I could take walk-ins on a Friday. The receptionist that I spoke to over the phone was very informative and very nice compared to the other places that I called that didn't really seem like they wanted to give me that much attention or answer any of my questions I had. My best friend and I showed up on time with our sketches of our little tattoos that we wanted to get we were matched up with a guest tattoo artist named Matt, Matt was super personable and very easy-going. Although our tattoos were very simple and straightforward he definitely took the time to consult with us for placement and thickness. Matt definitely showed agility with the space he was given to perform the tattoo as a guest artist but he made it work and perform too beautiful perfect tattoos that I will be so happy about forever. This is probably the newest shop in town and it is located in downtown Missoula. The shop also doubles as an art gallery to showcase the work of the in house artists. I personally go to Scott Fieldhouse and I love his work. The atmosphere is good with some good music in the background while you're getting work done on you. They are blowing up so don't expect to get an appointment right away! I booked mine 2 weeks in advance. Well worth the wait because I love my tattoos. I took my daughter here in January for her very first tattoo and was disgusted by the lack of communication, the poor quality of the work, and the absolute pathetic attitude of the guy (not artist) who did her tattoo. Love love loved my experience at Blaque Owl. Giving them a 4 star rating because the front desk receptionist is very rude! I interacted with her on two separate occasions and both times she made me feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Anyway, everyone else there is so nice. The artists who walked by us in the waiting area were super friendly and seem genuine. Lacy did my tattoo and it was perfect ...everything I imagined! She was receptive to emails and my design ideas. Then when we met her the day of she was kind, soft spoken, so relaxed, and an efficient artist. She's quick but still does absolutely beautiful botanical work. I'd recommend her for flowers or anything plant related. I respect this woman! I'll go back to her for future tattoos for sure. read more

5/16/14 tattoo date (redone review) - I was recommended by several of my friends to Blaque Owl Tattoo for my first tattoo and by those same people was recommended to Ian Caroppoli. I visited their website and went through his artwork ahead of time to see if he did any artwork close to what I had in mind (was thinking of written pieces first) and enjoyed the handwriting he had done on some of his clients. Now, time definitely passed and when I finally decided Blaque Owl was the place to go, I set up an appointment with them sending them the design of a lily flower in a tribal band. They were quick to get back to me (one star) and said he'd be willing to do that for me but that he was booked way out to April (I emailed them in Feb. 4) so I set it up then saying I had a lot of ideas and things may change on my idea of designs so that was perfect. They were open about me emailing them all my design ideas (another star) which was nice even if it took them a bit to reply (which was not necessary but appreciated that they did). Unfortunately, my artist decided to take a vacation the weekend of my tattoo! SAD DAYS! And when I called back to reschedule he was booked way out until like August so I just said find me a few hours for one tattoo any day in the first half of May so May 6th I went in for my tattoo. Now, right off the bat, the place was pretty empty but was very clean and lots of artwork from all the artists hung up, art portfolios, t-shirts but not all in your face buy me kind of way. The receptionists who also happened to be I THINK a tattooist as well was professional I can't say her demeanor was super friendly but it wasn't rude either. One of the other artists was super friendly and told me I'd be hooked after my first one (she's right!) Meeting Ian he seemed like he was tired and a little irritated by my questions about my tattoo and the fact that I didn't know that he couldn't draw the tattoo I wanted initially. He seemed almost annoyed when I picked one of my other ankle designs to do from the one i had picked out months in advance so I changed back after looking at my options. I was afraid to talk to him about it (definitely lost a star for that). And his tattooing was not as great as people had talked him up to be. No pain really but I was left with a scar and his lines were poorly done (lots of lifting instead of holding) so my tattoo looks a little blotchy and my flower that he colored in is faded in some areas so it doesn't match the rest of the shading on the flower. He was definitely the quiet type and even when I tried to talk to him about his tattoos he didn't seem to want to talk about them which is okay but when he asked me some questions he seemed to be not really invested in talking to me which is again alright since I want my tattoo to turn out really well so if that means not talking I will work with that (I talked the entire time to keep my mind off the noise of the needle and when things got a little sensitive so having him and my friend I brought with me ignore me was fine by me). The price was $70 very nice for the poor college student who only spent about 45min-1hr on the table. He also offered free touch up and printed out the aftercare, answered all my questions and told me the aftercare face-to-face (added back the star I had taken away earlier). I took out the extra star from my previous review as I have come down from my first tattoo high, I remember my artist telling me he didn't do tribal when I clearly ember the emails when I set up the appointment months in advance that he was very excited to do my tattoo. He's moved from this shop so I can't get any free touch ups which is upsetting because he did a pretty mediocre job :/ read more

He picked up on my accent and asked if I was visiting.... Like that was relevant! Really dismissive and asked me to go to the front desk! I guess he's just to busy to deal with inquires. first of all, let me say that Scott Fieldhouse is VERY talented. The shop is clean, and comfortable, and I'm sure that anyone that gets a tattoo by him would be satisfied. However, that is IF you can get your tattoo done by Scott. I found Scott personally to be very unprofessional and unreliable. I have no experience with any of the other artists, so this review is only regarding my experience with Scott. Here's the full story: I was encouraged by someone who'd had most or all of his tattoos (one of which was very complicated, and took several consults to design) done by Scott, to go to him. My friend raved about the shop, and the talent. The tattoo I wanted done was complicated, personal and important to me and I wanted to consult with Scott about it, and be part of the design. I live out of the area, but was in Missoula about every month, so I called to set up an initial consult. The receptionist was very professional and kind and told me to email a detailed description of what I wanted, the more detail the better, including any images I might have that could help. I did that. I never heard back, so I emailed to ask for confirmation that Scott received the email with my document attached. He had. Within a day or so he called me, and we chatted about the tattoo I wanted, and he said, "Yeah, that sounds totally do-able, just come in when you're in town in a few weeks and I'll have some sketches for you." The first weekend in May (a week and a half after our phone conversation) and after a six hour drive, I stopped by and Scott looked at me blankly, and I reminded him about the tattoo I was wanting, and he said "I'm sorry...I don't have any sketches for you today. I'm finishing up some projects this week so I should have more time. When will you be back in town?" I said a month later (first weekend in June) and he said he'd have some sketches for me then. We talked more about my design and he said, "I'm really excited to do this, it's got all the stuff I like to work on!" He encouraged me to make an appointment to get the ink because he was booked a few months out. So I paid $100 deposit and booked an appointment for the end June, two months away. I figured this would be plenty of time to work on designing this tattoo. Despite being disappointed that I didn't get to see any sketches that day, I was determined to feel positive - he's THAT good, he has so many clients and I'll be lucky to get him to do this one for me. My friend that referred him agreed, saying, "Scott's just like that...he's a bit of a flake, but it's worth it." Two weeks out from our scheduled consult, I was advised by my friend to email Scott to remind him. I did, and sent another a week later. Short emails, simply saying, "Hey, Sorry to bug you, please don't forget about me." Three days before our trip to Missoula I received an email that said, "Hi, Scott wanted me to let you know that he'll have some drawings for you when you come by on June 1." I was excited. In the car, the day before we were to meet and half way to Missoula, I received another email, "Hello, Scott wanted me to tell you that he has too many projects right now to take this one on. He's sorry, and appreciates all the work you put in to it." I don't believe that. I think he FINALLY got around to looking at my document/info and decided he didn't want to do it. He'd told me already he was going to have time, that he was excited about it, and took my money. I think if he looked at the information back in APRIL, he could have refused to do it then rather than waste my time and energy. I went in and the receptionist was again, very kind and professional, and returned my deposit. Meanwhile, my friend is very embarrassed, and agrees I was treated unprofessionally and unfairly. Scott may not know it, but he's lost a faithful client. Let me be clear, I am FINE with Scott refusing to do my tattoo. That's his right, to choose what art he creates and who he takes on. What I'm NOT fine with is how I was treated, led on for two months, and promised things that were never delivered. Communication could have been so much more consistent, and he should NEVER promise anything he can't follow through on. So in conclusion, if you can get a tattoo from Scott, or anyone at Blaque Owl, go for it. But don't expect them to be reliable. read more

UPDATE: In reference to the gift certificate, the manager contacted me through FB 4 weeks after my review, I went into their shop and the owner gave me $50 back for the deposit. The communication and customer service from Blaque Owl is atrocious and they don't care that people feel that way, blatantly rude. They aren't interested in your input, they argue with you about what you want and are all too willing to tell you HOW MANY of a certain tattoo they've done, frequently derailing people from getting what they want. You can read that in other reviews here. Between three of us we've gotten 5 tattoos from 3 different employees there, each experience underwhelming coming away feeling like a bother and having had an awkward experience. After the last one I'm done with them. No more gift certificates for holidays or birthdays, no more tattoos for myself from them, they will not get my business anymore. BEWARE when you purchase a gift certificate. I purchased one as a gift for someone who lives out of town, Blaque Owl refused to even schedule an appointment without a $50 deposit, knowing she had a gift certificate and was coming from out of town. I called and gave my card #, now they are up to $150 of my money, they immediately run my card for the $50, days before the appointment and having already discussed what the tattoo was going to be and how small it was to be. Low and behold the total of the tattoo came to $70, instead of refunding my deposit and using the $100 gift certificate, they used the deposit and would only give in-store credit for the rest. It's a total scam!! I've been to other tattoo parlors and this is not standard procedure. I'm not even going to go into how rude Lana (tattoo employee) was, it's just angering and frustrating to think about. Lesson learned. Go to another parlor where you will be treated professionally and can actually have a rapport with your tattoo ARTIST. read more

Ian is a great artist and great to deal with! The people at the front desk aren't always super organized but it is worth it to get work done by Ian. My girlfriend had a bad experience with another artist, I think her name was Melissa. I would not recommnd her but I would and do recommend Ian to anyone thinking about getting anything done. my experience was with a guest artist, Matt. Overall, the experience was very disappointing. He was an hour & 15 min late to get me in. I emailed ahead of time what I wanted, and the adjustments I wanted. I requested his opinion on one part of the tattoo. He had nothing ready or prepared. When he finally got around to discussing it with me, and drawing it up, I did not like the suggested changes. He apparently did not like that, and told me "that's the only way it'll look good." He didn't give me other options, and said he could do the wording differently, but that it would look "amateur." he was very arrogant & condescending. I decided on just the image, which so far, turned out nice. However, his customer service & attitude were subpar to say the least. To top it off, he completely over charged me!! $160 for a tattoo that took 30 min to ink, & about 15 min to consult, which wasn't much of a consult. I left there quite irritated & am not recommending Blaque Owl (Or maybe just that artist). Disappointed!! read more

I've gotten 2 tattoos at Blaque Owl... the first was a wonderful experience! But - the second was not so wonderful, and it overshadowed everything else. I had a consultation with Lacy Zee, and made an appointment. She told me to contact her through either email or text message to send pictures and explain more details of the tattoo I wanted. She never responded to any of my messages, and then when I tried to reschedule the appointment because I had still not gotten a artist's draft of what my tattoo would look like, she tried to charge me the $50 deposit I had put down for the appointment. I was able to make a new appointment after some frustrating negotiations, and finally got my tattoo, which really looked nothing like what I had wanted originally. I just wanted to be done with the interaction and hopefully find a better tattoo artist who could improve the work that had already been done. It was a disappointing experience, the artist was unprofessional, rude, disengaged, and pretty careless. read more

hi there! I will start first with this: I didn't visit the actual shop! I have followed Lana on Instagram for a while and quickly snapped up a spot at the Seattle Tattoo Expo when I found out she would be in the Pacific Northwest. ladies and gents: she's phenomenal. I LOVE. love love. how straightforward she is about ALL THE THINGS; from making sure we were on the same page with tattoo design (and letting me know when an idea I had wouldn't work for the body part I had chosen!), being honest and accurate with pricing, and giving me 1. options on details and 2. updates on progress as we went. somehow, even over the phone and through emails alone, Lana was able to create a design that is not only fucking gorgeous but REALLY looks "me." her demeanor made me feel comfortable instantly, and she made me LOL multiple times. the other artists from Blaque Owl were fun, engaging and overall pleasant AF as well. anyway I would recommend Lana to anyone, but *especially* to someone who already digs her style, and is a little flexible with their ideas-- I am SO so happy with how mine turned out having approached the appointment in that way. 10/10. absolutely will request more work in the future. :) read more

Can I please reiterate that I HAD AN APPOINTMENT AND PUT DOWN A DEPOSIT!
