It's okay. Nothing too out there and different compared to other comic shops and not that many back issues to dig through. Like Graham Crackers some fun key issues for sale but higher priced. This place is like Graham Crackers cousin! It's in downtown La Grange so you'd think that's a plus, and it is, but I find myself rather strolling through town than just a few minutes here as there really isn't much to find in the store. read more

Comic book stores are in such short supply that I would hate to bad mouth Chimera's Comics. Their staff is pretty friendly and courteous. Role playing games are conducted on site, and it seems like they are tolerant of people just "hanging out". They got all the new stuff and graphic novels. Collectors items are sparse and overpriced. I just have two beefs with this establishment. They never seem to be adequately stocked in bags, back boards and long boxes and their prices aren't the best. But I'm hanging in there, I love my comics and a decent comic book store is a rare commodity these days. read more

Chimera is a store that is good but should be great, but as you can see I'm going to give it a low rating from my own personal story with the company so do with it what you will. First off, I used to work in a comic book store with great selection and a crappy owner so I can empathize with a lot of things comic book retailers go through. It is actually one of my future goals to open up a place so I attempt to learn all I can from every retailer I come across. Anyway, my story starts during their Halloween Contest of 2012. I suppose this gives a name to a face when I post this, but whatever, it's not like I'm going back anyway. On Halloween Night I entered their store after work with a Captain America costume featuring a lot of handmade elements including my own shield. I asked the cashier if I could enter the contest to which he said I could submit an entry to the owner's email directly. Having been officially entered I made the mistake of thinking that the voting was done by 'liking' my picture of facebook rather than voting on a poll I had no idea was on the site. With the last day looming I contacted all my facebook friends and easily got them to vote on the poll eclipsing Steve Rogers (ironically), beating her vote by something like twenty votes before the end of the night. By the close of the contest I was up like 250-some-odd votes. Good publicity for the young store, right? It would be almost a whole month we me inquiring whether I had won. Of course I had won! I had brought in 250-some-odd-votes to the party and added attention to the store! Instead I got an email from the owner telling me I was in second place for these reasons: 1.) I was a late entrant, which is bogus because I was still accepted to the contest, and 2.) I did not have enough votes by the time of the vote closing, which was also bunk because upon contacting Mr. Chimera prior to the end of the contest I had confirmed that I still had one full day to rally my troops to vote, which I am proud to say I did. So Mr. Chimera uses these reasons plus the nagging of other entrants that I was entered late to justify that I had indeed merited only silver. This got on my nerves because he didn't even bother to talk to me before making a decision on the contest! He just makes a decision because other customers complain. I would've bought into it if he attempted to compromise, but his response to me was that second-place was waiting at his store for me and that I can call it first place, HE DIDN'T REALLY CARE (the last capitalized part of the sentence was taking verbatim from his email). So could the guy who felt slighted and earned 250-some-odd votes easily call up his pals to trash the store here on Yelp? Sure I could have, but this is the first and last I will write about this. This may seem like an empty threat to the owner, but I could have painted Yelp red with bad reviews from many different people because of this, could have brought his correspondence straight to the BBB, and went to the local press to slam the store, but the soft part of me still wishes well for a small entrepreneur comic book owner to learn from this. After this I have no acrimony toward the store and truthfully hope they do better. In customer service you learn to try to appeal to the customer as best you can and to hear that Mr. Chimera simply did not care was indicative of a business practice that will ultimately fail. So instead of reasoning with me, the customer that usually spends $20-$30 at a comic book store weekly, I have a bad review here on Yelp, no confidence in what looked to be a good store, and a tale to tell. And if he's reading this, seriously dude, I could have done worse than just write a truthful review. read more

I have been collecting comics since the late 1980s and took a break in early 2000. I had no intention for getting back in to collecting until my brother decided to take me to Wizard World ComicCon in 2012. While there, my love for comics was rekindled and I was desperately looking for a shop that could be "the one" for me. Having to drive to my in-law's house in LaGrange, I pass this shop a lot. After ComicCon, I decided to stop in and I'm glad I did! The décor is perfect...large iconic characters all over the walls, art, toys, books, and more thoughtfully displayed throughout the store. I thought this was a much better place then many stores I've been to locally. I had worked at a comic shop for many years as a pre-teen until I went to college, so I was used to getting taken care of with monthly subscriptions and mindful pulls of new books that I might like. I joined Chimera's Subscription club as soon as walked in to the store. I have been a customer for over a year now, and they have not disappointed! (although I don't get a mindful pull of a new book...but they do respond well to adding what I like once I tell them I want something) I highly recommend you stop in and check these guys out. You will be taken back a time in your childhood that should have been some of the best times in your life...but the best part is that time is NOW! read more

When Chimera's first opened, I was not impressed at all. The walls were bare and there were barely any comics. Now that about a year has gone by, I can definitely see how much they improved their store. Their selection of comics is very good. My boyfriend has multiple subscriptions there and gets a pretty nice discount for comics because he's a subscriber. The actual building is very nice. It's clean, organized, and smells like fresh comics! The employees are usually pretty good. The owner, Carmello, is very nice and helpful. You can tell he loves his job. Some of the other employees are shy, but still nice enough. The employees sometimes play board games when waiting for customers, which can somewhat be off-putting for some people who are looking for severe professionalism, but for everyone else it shows how casual and fun the business is. Check out is usually pretty efficient. The only complaint I would have would be whenever the phone rings, the person at the register must answer, even if it's in the middle of another customer's transaction. I understand that this is a new business and they may be understaffed right now, but I'd say it's something for them to consider. I'm very glad LaGrange finally has a comic shop! And an excellent one at that! read more

I was a long time comic reader but now only read a couple books a month. However, my kids (4 and 6) both enjoy reading comics. Chimera's has a great all ages section. We stop in about once a week and let the kids pick out something. The staff is always very friendly. They also offer a subscription service and even though we only reserve about 4 comics, they still give us a discount. read more

I've never been to this store, but I've known so many people who have that I feel as qualified to review this store as I would answering a Yahoo Answers question that I think I might kinda know the answer to maybe (and at least as credible). This store probably has it all: Comics, Heroclix &/or Magic games some night of the week (possibly), walls, a floor, a ceiling, maybe a big window, definitely a door or two... I LOVE THIS PLACE (conceptually). We go to the Oak Lawn store all the time. They're really awesome. I understand that the LaGrange store is exactly the same, but with a ZZ Top song named after it. I imagine both stores are EXACTLY alike because there's cloning now. Notice how you only see one Sara & Claire at one time? I mean I've seen Sara & Claire in the same room before, but what about their clones? Probably in LaGrange... making more clones. Why would they not then clone customers so they could sell multiple copies of the same comic to the "same" person? @^#%!!! What if they already cloned me? Where would I be? PROBABLY LAGRANGE!!! I am totally me of those guys... been watching The Walking Dead on TV, found out it was a comic first (still is ongoing too!) and it piqued my interest in comics / graphic novels. So I went in... thankfully La Grange has this place! Told the guy what I liked and such and he took me right over to some comics I might like... bought them on the spot and have been back a few times to get more issues. Went to a free comic book day event and had one of the staff yell at my autistic son for grabbing a free book for himself after I had grabbed the same one, at the time the rules were not made available and this only made a rough situation worse. read more

Best shop in La Grange! Steve and Carmelo are beyond welcoming, fun, and knowledgeable. I have been to a lot of shops and none compare to the service that they provide. Their selection is great and if they don't have it they will order it for you. I have a big pull list and been out of town for months and they keep it going without any guilt trip. Carmelo and Steve feel more like friends than salesmen. They also put on solid events that make the store a social gathering. If you are looking for a fun, non pretentious shop with a great selection this is your place. These guys know their stuff and do more for promoting comics to new readers than any other shop. If I could give them more than five stars I would read more

My girlfriend and i had a pleasant shopping experience this afternoon Sept. 21, 2014 at chimera's comics in la grange. We came in on a sunday 1hr. Before their closing time. As soon as we walked in we were happily greeted by carmelo chimera who was behind the cash register. Now I haven't been to a comic book store in a long time but we were surprised how everything was so organized and stock with racks and racks of comics and a vast selection of figures all along their walls. Also they have a bin of discounted comic books in back of the store that are all a dollar. Also a female employee guided us around the store to find what we needed for my nephews. And after Mr. Carmelo rang me up we held a conversation and showed me all the new poster prints they just received and invited us back to the 24 hr comics day on the first Saturday in October where they would be artists present to autograph their new poster prints. Thank you for the great service Mr. Carmelo Chimera and staff, highly recommend this shop. Will return soon. read more

I've been coming here for the last two months since I got back into comics again...it's been a while probably around the time carnage and spawn first came out...back in the day....but it was an easy transition since I've been coming here..very friendly staff, good selection and the place is very welcoming...plus I'll be honest it can be very overwhelming at times to decide what to read and collect but I've narrowed it down to about six titles so far....plus they have a good subscription service so you can never miss an issue...I pretty much been stopping by every week to see what's new that just came out....I definitely recommend this shop to anyone that's in the la grange area...definately got me into collecting comics again..... read more

Clean, well-laid out store, with creative display ideas like putting all the rare old comics behind panels in old stand-up screens. I had no trouble finding anything, and despite the fact that the guy behind the counter was clearly super busy, he took time out to answer my question about whether a comic had been collected, and while they were sold out he went to pains to tell me when it would be back in stock. Super nice, super friendly! As a lady who's had bad experiences with leery or unpleasant service in comic book stores in the past, I was thoroughly impressed, and I'll definitely go again when I'm back in La Grange. read more

About 4 months ago I came into Chimera looking for gifts for an actor from this Canadian TV show that has since gotten a whole new following, Trailer Park Boys. I knew that he was a big Superman fan and I asked for help in getting him some Superman comics he might like, and I chose some that took on new ways of telling the origins of The Man of Steel. The three actors behind the roles they play on Trailer Park Boys, Mike Smith, John Paul Tremblay and Robb Wells also have a website called Swearnet. Each week they have a mailbag segment where they open up gifts from their fans around the world, and my gift was on that segment yesterday (111/01/2016). All three of them loved the gift I sent them (candy, popcorn, things from Buddy Guy's Legend Nightclub), but Robb really loved the Superman comics I gave him (among which were The Death of Superman graphic novel, and Superman: American Alien, I think that was the name of the title, and all first issues), and his reaction, as well as the overall reaction from the three warmed my heart and my day got a million percent better after seeing them open up their gifts. Thank you so much for all your help! I know I will definitely be back for more comics for myself and (maybe) my crush Robb. read more

Been a fan of this store since Day 1. Knew Steven from a previous store and was excited for him and his partner to open this place. From the 1st day this store opened until now this place has come leaps and bounds ! I recently opened up a subscription service here and like the service I have received thus far ! This is where I currently get all my comics. Great service and friendly staff. The store is super clean and bright and offers all the latest comics. The selection of old back issues are practically non-existant but I don't collect old comics so it doesn't bother me. They mainly keep up with the more recent issues. They do however have a nice selection of trades as well as other related merchandise. Toys, tshirts, etc. Also great parking and location. read more

Nice comic shop in LaGrange. Not a lot of comics stores in the area otherwise. The shop is clean and modern. Not a lot of back issues to choose from, but some older comics do stay on the racks. They also carry some magazines if you want to grab something on your way to the train. I wouldn't recommend shopping there during one of their gaming nights. The tables that are set up and the assorted Magic/Heroclix players standing around make it difficult to get to some things. read more

While he tried to make excuses and offered to do the interview again, the fact is that my son sat in this store, for the second time in one day and waited for two and a half hours. He recieved only vague answers about when the owner might return from the staff. The offer to help now that I have posted it publicly is a day late and a dollar short. First of all let me say "Very Unprofessional!" They don't seem to care about their customers, they are rude, not knowledgeable, prices are way over priced, and very unfriendly. Obviously the people that run it are just showing off their collection, because with their prices I am surprised they are still in business. When I saw there was a comic shop in La Grange I was excited until I visited this establishment and was treated poorly. Worst comic store I've bought at with bad business sense and poor customer service. Twice I've ordered comics from this store and both times the orders were not entirely fulfilled. After voicing my disappointment with the employee who ordered my books, the manger has the nerve to call me at home and instead of apologizing for the reoccurring mistake, tries to tell me off. Poor business mentality. I'm also amazed that the manager who wasn't even in the store accuses me off yelling; the tone of my voice was far from yelling, get your facts straight. Once again, like other reviewers have mentioned, maybe the manager should try to solve the problems this store faces instead of making accuses and being rude to customers. Furthermore, scroll down through the reviews and you'll see I'm not the only one with a 1 star review. I will never shop here ever again. We go to this comic book store quite often as my husband and 4 year old son love comics. The staff is friendly and well versed about comic books. My son loves Hero Clix and recently we went into Chimera's to buy an A Bomb Hero Clix. They did not have it that day and my son was disappointed. Mr. Chimera happened to be in the store that day. He invited us to see his personal Hero Clix collection. Then, he gave my son over $25 worth of his own Hero Clix because he felt bad that he didn't have the one my son wanted that day. We thought that was so nice of Mr. Chimera. This really made my son's day! We were already big fans of this comic shop, but after experiencing Mr. Chimera's kindness and generosity, we will never go anywhere else! read more

Chimeras is a place that takes advantage of every inch of space they have. Sure the place isn't big, but it's filled with comics as well as action figures. Though I feel that this place can be improved in a number of ways. They don't have many back issues and they aren't in plastic cases. You might have a hard time looking for a certain issue you want because the place is a little disorganized (then again I assume it's because of the little space). One thing I love about chimeras is their staff. My first time coming here, I only had enough money to buy one of the two comics I placed on the counter. But the guy took coins from the tip box and placed it in his hands, later handing me both comics inside a bag. I left satisfied. If this is your first visit to a comic store, then you might be satisfied as well, but I've been to a number of others so I thought this wasn't perfect but still worth a visit. read more

Some of the nicest people you will ever meet at a business. Incredibly affable, generous with their time, and really strive to take care of their customers. I do not mean to understate this. They really work hard to exceed expectations. They even do a podcast (caffeinated comics). Wed nights are for hero clix for more advanced players, saturday mornings are for beginners, magic on friday nights, and they even do dungeon and dragons at the oak lawn store on sundays. Once, they let my nephew hang out for a while and even let him help them put up signage when he arrived a few hours too early for hero clix. Just the fact that they let him hang out with them speaks volumes about their coolness. The store looks beautiful on the inside. I droped out of reading books in the early 90's. This place got me to start collecting again. It feels so good to have a place to go to where you can get to know everyone, and everyone accepts you and takes you in. I have never encountered the level of kindness in any other comic shop, much less other business as here in Chimeras. I am very grateful for having such an awesome small business like this near my home. I love coming here and I urge you to support this business. It is worthy of your support and hope they stay in business for decades. read more
