The two brothers who own unicorn comics couldn't be more friendly and helpful. they have an extensive collection and will help you track down any thing you may be looking for. It is an absolute pleasure visiting this store.

Thanks for having this great comic!

Tons of selection, but a very small store. Smells like a bad mixture of BO and weed. Would not recommend.

Terry is awesome and I was happy to sell him my father's Mad magazine collection.

Although I used to live in Chicago, I haven't visited this store in person. The review I'm leaving…read moreis for an online order! I typically try to preorder my comics online but haven't been able to do that in awhile (broke college student problems lol). That leaves me in an awkward position of trying to scramble to find single issues as they're coming out. I have a couple of comic book stores near me but I don't really like either of them and as a result I don't feel like driving twenty minutes. Sometimes if I'm having a hard time finding a comics, I will use their online sites to check inventory. I actually tried to have a pull list with one of them and literally gave them ten chances (not exaggerating). Stuff would be damaged, or show up several weeks late. And I'd have to remind them that I'd preordered a first printing. There's also an issue where some of the staff didn't know the differences in variant covers and would just give you whatever. No thanks, better to order online from a place with more experience and consistency. So that's what I do whenever I can order ahead. Unfortunately I have a little gap to fill now. I'm so glad Gem Comics was able to help me out with that! Seriously, Gem Comics must have excellent inventory! Because I found a few of the hard to find issues (Runaways miniseries 3+4, first printing of USM #19 and the C variant for issue #1 of Strange Tales) at the top of my list. In the past I've ordered indie stuff from them that I couldn't find elsewhere. For example, after borrowing an indie series called The Hunger and the Dusk at my local library, I knew that I wanted to add the single issues to my collection. Then I had a hard time finding those six issues. I remember that I ordered a couple of them from Gem Comics! When I say that those four issues I just recently ordered are hard to find, I mean that I checked with my two local stores first. I also checked Graham Crackers, and the big store I regularly use on the West Coast. Neither of them had these four issues that were really important to me. I also really appreciated the shipping- both the shipping options and the shipping speed. The shipping option I chose (Ground Advantage) is one dollar cheaper than the flat rate shipping offered by GCC and you get a tracking number. Then, like I said, there's also the incredible speed of this store. I received an email saying that my items had been prepared for shipment not even ten minutes after my order confirmation email had come through. Then my package was at the post office the next morning. This was extremely impressive to me! The West Coast store I typically use sometimes takes forever to get my package out... even if I email them a week or two in advance. Let's say that (for example), I emailed them on September 17th to tell them I'd like a package sent out in two weeks- including the 10/1 releases. They'd respond to me quickly and make it sound like it's no problem... but then my stuff wouldn't have actually started its journey until Sunday 10/5 or Monday 10/6. (I've only stayed at that store because all preorders are guaranteed to be high on the comic grading scale). I wish I had known about this store when I still lived in the Chicago area because I would've been excited to go check it out! If you're looking for something tricky, I'd highly suggest you consider ordering from their online store.

But Jason is a pretty friendly guy, will order what you need, that 25% off every day for trades is amazing when I don't see other shops doing that at all ! Selection is newer books (so if you are looking for back issues from 20 years ago or older those he doesn't have) and the value is really a great bang for your Bucks !!! Highly recommended !!

I like the store policy to combat scalpers, only allowing one copy to be sold per cover. When I got there, the OPEN sign was lit and the lights were on, but a small sign said "back in 5 minutes" and another sign had been flipped to closed. Tried the handle and the shop was locked. No big deal - I had 5 minutes to spare. I went back to my car. Waited 5 minutes, 10 minutes -- no change in the signage. I watched another potential shopper try the door, still locked, and they waited 5 minutes (now 15 for me). No change - they left. 3:05pm and still no one there during store hours. I saw another potential shopper try again 5 minutes later and still nobody. After 25 minutes of waiting, I gave up and went on my way. To say I'm disappointed in the service level would be an understatement. I'm giving 2 stars because I feel like it could be a good shop, but my experience doesn't reflect that at all. I hope it's a one off failure to keep track of time or maybe an emergency that came up. I'll try again another day, but I definitely won't wait the 5 minutes the sign asks for again - it can't be trusted.

There's a little of something for everyone here. I usually see the same staff faces and they're always helpful and welcoming. If you're a collector at any level, definitely stop by. This place is exactly what's wrong with many collecting hobbies. Yea, the selection here is pretty…read moregood. That's mostly because the prices are terrible--worse than eBay and Facebook marketplace scalpers. Case in point: there's a pokemon illustrated set that just came out. It's $17. You can still get lucky at retailers and it'll be restocked. Here, just 2 days after launch, they're selling for $50. Just nuts. I guess it's clear this isn't a "card shop," it's a scalpers storefront. Don't go here looking for Lorcana--guessing the margins are too low. Except for their singles, which they sell for $2-4....crazy pricing for Lorcana. Anyways, i won't be back. Will have to continue my search for a card shop that's ethical and somewhat reasonable. --------- Edit in response to business reply: 1) i agree conversation could go a long way. But when your pricing on a brand new Pokémon set (which doesn't have a set market yet) is already 3x MSRP, what productive conversation can happen? It's just a straight up gouge. I'm not naive to expect to get everything at MSRP, but i think 3x markup 2 days post launch is unreasonable. 2) i did ask about Lorcana. I was told you "don't carry much" and "didn't have any right now." 3) you seem to be implying that you're aware prices are high and can then be negotiated lower. If that's how you want to do it that's your prerogative, just understand that's offputting for new customers. It's hard to want to establish a relationship and have a conversation when the first impression is being taken advantage of. And when your response to pricing questions is "well the hobby is thriving!" I don't think that's off base.

Yesterday was my first time visiting the store was looking forward to check the place out and see…read moreif there was anything interesting to read for the week. It was calm and decent even though there were a lot boxes around the store that made things difficult to get through and there wasn't anyone available in the checkout section since I think the owner who was wearing a checkered black and white shirt with a black hat who looks like he's in mid or late 40s and other staff member were getting some vintage comics packed up to mall for the holidays which is understandable. There was a comic book I was interested in purchasing I think it was a vintage Spider-Man book from the 60s or 70s that had the lizard on the front and I was gonna purchase it until the owner came in with a stressed or angry attitude towards me saying that all the comic in the white boxes needed to be alphabetical order and he took it from my hand without even saying anything in a proper manner that they weren't for sale and that whatever was on the shelf were the ones on sale. Thankfully, I'm a person who's calm and didn't have a reaction like anyone would and it was a place that I won't visiting again for a while, maybe until the holiday session is over and the owner is calm then I'll give them another chance. Moral of the story is that comic book owners who are have a stressful day and a negative attitude, don't be afraid to take a day off and get some time for yourself.
