When my husband and I decided on a home birth we were recommend Sue as a midwife from a well trusted friend who had gone through the process with her. My husband and I had planned on interviewing many different midwives for our first baby to try to find the right fit. Sue was the first we met with and when we walked out we both agreed we didn't need to meet anyone else! She is so incredibly knowledgeable and wise, with tons of experience under her belt (which explains why she's got a constant handful of midwives-in-training on her team). She is so comfortable and confident in natural birth and your body's ability to birth your baby that you can't help but feel at ease in her care. I looked forward to every prenatal visit with her and her team. She addresses every aspect of your pregnancy - your physiology, baby's position (which she nails every time with a simple fetoscope and a few little palpations... it is seriously impressive), nutrition and supplements, emotional and mental wellbeing... everything. It never feels rushed and it's always a good time. She's straight-forward and honest and will tell you what you need to hear, because she truly wants the best outcome for you and your baby. She's so in tune with maternal and fetal health that she caught onto some subtle things that no one else did, early on, and helped me address them from the get-go - which helped us avoid a lot of complications that would have come up later. But birth is a whole other thing entirely. Birth (especially for your first) can feel so unknown and overwhelming and it's easy to get caught up in it (for moms and dads both!). But Sue's calm confidence made all the difference in the world. Despite my (unusually!) long and difficult birth, she had SO many tricks up her sleeve and is so well-versed in everything from techniques to move baby's position to homeopathics and other natural remedies, when to rest and when to walk, different positions to labor in.... etc. Having my baby at home was incredibly important to me, and Sue tirelessly (for 36 hours!) did literally everything possible to make sure that happened for us. And after all that work (i'm sure she was exhausted!!) she climbed up next to me on the bed, took my face in her hands, and told me, "I AM SO PROUD OF YOU!!!" That memory still makes me tear up! She is a personal hero of mine, and I don't say that lightly!! As if that that wasn't enough, she was by my side for the first week of my little girl's life as we struggled really hard through establishing breastfeeding. She worked closely with us on getting the latch and positioning down, brought us lots of helpful breastfeeding tools, and talked me through and encouraged me in one of the most difficult things I've done (seriously, I thought birth was hard...). The birth of my daughter was the best experience and it was because of Sue and Blessed Beginnings Midwifery. After six months with my former OBGYN, my husband and I were extremely dissatisfied with our prenatal care. I couldn't have asked for a better midwife and midwife team. I suffered a very traumatic hospital birth with my first born and when I was pregnant again I knew I wanted everything to be different this time around. Sue is exceptionally knowledgeable and caring; you can tell the minute you meet her. She spent as much time as I needed at prenatal visits, was always prompt about seeing me (no 45 min OB waits!), and available outside of appointments whenever I had additional questions or concerns. Sue is an amazing midwife. She is kind, laid back, knowledgeable, experienced, calm, and gentle. She takes plenty of time to get to know you and care for you in your specific situation, every time. Appointments last an HOUR, not the hurried five minutes of your typical OB office visit. Honestly, I was very hesitant with the whole home birth idea when my wife mentioned it, but Sue Gill changed my mind. She tended to my wife's every needs and took the extra time to figure out a treatment for a condition that my wife had during the pregnancy. My son was finally born a few days ago a surprised breach. I know Sue from my sister's homebirths and immediately knew I wanted her to be my midwife when I became pregnant in 2010. My sister's and I have all had very different birth experiences (a total of 5 babies) that have included a few minor complications. Sue is extremely well educated and experienced. She remains calm and encouraging during birth (even when it goes on for days!). She trusts the birth process and a mother's instincts; knows when to leave you to focus on your labor and when to step in to reassure, and possibly guide, you. I thoroughly enjoyed my prenatal visits at her office as well. We spent an hour together (at least) each appointment. Visits included: all normal pregnancy check-ups; she answered any questions I had; she suggested subjects/decisions to look into regarding birth and newborns; and she provided me with tons of information (verbally, in her handbook and loaned me books) regarding nutrition, pregnancy, and birth. I really can't say enough great things about her and my birth experiences. For my first birth I had a fairly kind, but typical OB, who was not entirely encouraging of my wish for a natural birth. That birth ended up be an unplanned, unattended homebirth, but all ended up well. I knew I would plan my next birth at home with a midwife. For my 2nd pregnancy I first chose a very popular OC midwife, but never felt much of a connection with her. I searched for quite a while to find a midwife in a Orange County, I interviewed 3 different midwives and I knew as soon as I sat down with Susan that she was the one I trusted by my side during the entire process. I immediately felt safe by her warm, caring nature. She answered all of my questions and never felt impatient. She has years of experience and trained most of the midwives practicing in Orange County today (and that really made my husband and myself feel good). As weeks and months went by, I could not wait for my appointments with her to learn about my baby and hear it's heart beat through a stethoscope. She was always available to talk over the phone or text about any concern I had. As my birth approached, I was very confident I would have this baby at home. But, Mother Nature had a different plan for me, my daughter would not come down the birth canal. I ended up with a very long labor and Susan never left my side. Sleep deprived, she was there for me allowing me to follow my will and my wishes. As I realized I had done all I could with her guidance I transferred to a hospital. I wanted to find someone who had experience, knowledge, a great personality and someone who I felt truly cared about me... When my husband and I found Sue, she exceeded our expectations of what a midwife even could be and we were thrilled to hire her as our midwife. Through prenatal appointments at her office and her continuous availability and support our relationship grew as did our trust in Sue's abilities and knowledge as a midwife. I was a week past my edd with my son by the time labor started and I can't imagine the ups and downs of that week without her there for support. Midwife Sue is WONDERFUL and we used her for our 4th & 5th child births. My first 3 were hospital births and a home water birth FAR exceeds a hospital birth any day. This review is long overdue as our baby girl is now almost 8 months old but Sue has been nothing short of amazing. I switched care from an OBGYN and a hospital birth to a home birth with Sue rather late in my pregnancy (3d trimester) and that turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever taken! I highly recommend Susan Gill if you are considering using a midwife and having a home birth (which you definitely should!) The standard of care (pre and post natal) is not even comparable to what you receive with a OBGYN and hospital. I have had both a hospital birth and a home birth with Sue, and having done it both ways, I can only begin to say how much better it is to receive midwifery care with Sue and have a home birth. Appointments are an hour long, so you have all of your questions and concerns answered without feeling rushed, plus you have her cell phone number, so you can text or call any time you are in need, which is extremely reassuring while pregnant. Several times I was rushed out of my OBGYN's office after a five minute long appointment, after being told he was running late and waiting way passed my appointment time for those five minutes of prenatal care. With Sue, you really get to know each other throughout your pregnancy, so you feel completely comfortable. A bond of trust is built, which is very important, because you can actually trust that she has you and your baby's best interests in mind, and that she really cares. Visits to the office are relaxing and enjoyable and held in a family atmosphere. There is even a little play area for your other little ones. Birthing at home was so nice being in my own home, with my own food, and my own bathroom, and my own clothes, with nothing hooked up to me, no one coming in my room at all hours of the night preventing me from getting much needed rest when baby was sleeping, a real bed for my husband to sleep in, being able to labor in whatever way I needed to, eating and drinking what I wanted to, and on and on. I didn't have to worry about anyone forcing any medical procedures, medications, and interventions on me with or without my knowledge (this happened to me with my hospital birth). Sue explained everything ahead of time for me to research and make informed decisions. I am so grateful I found Sue and decided to have a home birth, despite my disbelief I could do it. (Sue was very reassuring when I doubted myself). I even got my insurance to cover the cost by doing a little advanced planning and appealing. This review is WAY overdue! When I got pregnant I was bound and determined to have Sue as my midwife. Well was she ever. My pregnancy was very healthy and smooth with her guidance. Toward the end it was determined my baby was breech. We pulled out all the stops to get that baby to move. Sue was with us every step of the way. She even traveled with us to an OB who attempted an ECV. When my stubborn girl would not turn head down for anyone, Sue supported us through the tough transition of care and planning a c-section with an OB. She was even there the day our daughter was born and would have been in the operating room if allowed! The whole roller coaster ride and process at the end would have been so much more difficult without her support and love. I highly recommend Sue as a home birth midwife. We love you Sue! Sue was my midwife for my third birth. My first birth was a C-section and my second was a hospital VBAC. I knew the third time around I wanted a different experience. I wanted to feel in complete control of my birth and I wanted my birth to be as natural and gentle as possible. I birthed my son, my third child, on November 24th, 2013 and it was everything and more than I could have ever dreamed of for a perfect birth. I went into labor at 41 weeks. During that last week when I went past my due date, Sue would randomly call me and check in on me to see how I was feeling both physically and emotionally. No OBGYN ever called me to see how I was feeling in my previous births. During labor she was calm and confident. Her confidence gave me confidence. She never doubted my ability to birth safely and naturally at home. Since I had a previous C-section there were midwives who wouldn't work with me, but Sue never doubted me and welcomed my birth with an open heart. She is not only caring and supportive, but very intelligent. I have a rare blood clotting disorder called Factor V Leiden and right away Sue knew what it was since it can affect women during pregnancy. There are many doctors who have to look up this condition in their medical books. Because Sue is so knowledgeable, I knew that I was in the best hands and the best of care. My homebirth was the proudest day of my life. Words can't express how grateful I am to Sue and her team for supporting me in this life changing event. The moment I met Sue, I knew that our decision was made. I immediately felt at ease with her. She just had a way of making me feel completely safe. My wife and I are very happy with our choice of Sue as our midwife. She has a thorough knowledge of her field and a common sense perspective that leaves you confident in her care from the first time you meet her. During our appointments with Sue, prenatal and postpartum, we were given her undivided attention and she answered all of our questions without making us feel rushed in any way. When I learned that Sue Gill was the midwife that other midwives go to for their births, I knew she was the person to guide us through our VBAC. We wanted to have a water birth at home for our second and third births and Sue provided all the information we needed for a healthy pregnancy and birth. She was instrumental in giving us the tools we needed to feel confident, empowered and educated and therefore at ease with what is intended to be a natural process. From the start she was attentive and caring, answering all our questions, spending at least an hour per visit, and calling us as soon as she received test results. I wish I could rate Sue with 100 stars. Not only did she completely go above and beyond as my midwife (working with our financial strains, always encouraging and making sure I was following my gut when it came to my birth desires, educating me on my options, always ALWAYS there when I needed anything...I could go on) but she's skilled, smart, easy to be with, funny and is passionate about what she does, not to mention she's one of the most experienced midwife in the OC. I owe my healthy twins and amazing recovery to her and her crew! Truly, she's the only reason I would have another baby, so I could see her more often. Ps I've never wanted to get a well woman check before meeting Sue. I will happily be seeing her for all my well woman check ups for as long as she's in business. Sue was my midwife for my second birth. After have a preemie my first time around and spending 2 weeks in the NICU I knew I wanted the complete opposite for my second birth. I met Sue before I was pregnant and knew right away that she was the one. She is truly an awesome midwife and extremely empowering. I enjoyed every visit with her and knew I was in the best care possible. I loved having a relationship with the person that was going to attend my birth opposed to my last OB who would see me for maybe 5 min each month and type on her computer the entire time. I had the birth I always wanted...it was beautiful, peaceful and unforgettable. Sue caught my baby girl and I'm so glad she was there with me every step of the journey.
