Two months later had an ischemic stroke caused by the birth control. Almost died. Diagnosed with pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in heart lungs and legs). We left every appointment laughing because not only is this guy professional and sharp, he's hilarious. Very supportive ... our birth plan changed towards the end of my pregnancy and he was very flexible. Dr. James is one of the most arrogant, emotionally detached, and inappropriate doctors I have ever had. It has taken me over 3 years to muster up the courage to write this review. I transferred to Dr. James after moving cities, based on a referral from a friend of a friend. I began seeing him midway through my pregnancy. At first, he seemed confident, maybe a little arrogant, but I told myself that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. He came recommended, and all I really cared about was that my baby would be in capable hands. But things quickly started to unravel. He forgot who I was at every single appointment and handed me the same stack of paperwork each time, as if we'd never met. I tried to rationalize it, maybe the masks made it harder to recognize patients, maybe he was just busy, but over time it became clear: he wasn't trying. He never made the slightest effort to form a connection or acknowledge me as a person. I was just another chart to him. If I had been able to transfer to another provider, I absolutely would have. But by the time the red flags started waving, I was too far along in my pregnancy to make a switch. When I opened up about experiencing anxiety he dismissed it entirely. I was 23 years old and had not had a single friend go through pregnancy and I felt entirely alone in the experience and was just seeking some reassurance. He told me my anxiety "wasn't real" and flippantly referred me to his hypnotherapist. That response alone showed a complete lack of understanding or empathy for pregnant women's mental health. At 37 weeks, he looked at me and said, "Look at you, you're huge," then casually mentioned a C-section would be necessary because my baby was "sunny side up." No explanation. No reassurance. Just blunt, unnecessary commentary that made me spiral. His bedside manner was short, condescending, and rude. Thankfully, he didn't deliver my baby, and I went on to have a completely normal vaginal delivery. I will forever be grateful that someone professional was there for me during one of the most important moments of my life. At my postpartum appointment, he made a disgusting comment about my bleeding, it grossed him out and he said "yuck, period blood" with visible disgust while looking at his fingers. Instead of offering basic professionalism, he acted immature, disgusted and judgmental. I was already feeling self conscious and grossed out by my own body. Later, I became pregnant again when my son was 13 months old. We were overjoyed, but I miscarried. I asked to see a different doctor, but was told no one else was available for weeks. So I had to face Dr. James again. It was a devastating experience, and his behavior made it worse in every possible way. He ignored the emotional weight of what I was going through. When he did the ultrasound, he said, "looks pretty empty to me." He followed it up by telling me how common it was in a condescending tone and invalidated every emotion I was feeling--which I was keeping all to myself. Just because it's a common experience doesn't mean it isn't painful, physically and emotionally. At the same appointment, I asked about non-hormonal birth control, as we were not ready to try again right away, and he made an inappropriate comment about using condoms, like it was a joke. This man should not be in women's healthcare. He lacks empathy, tact, and any genuine ability to care for women in their most vulnerable stages of life. His behavior was not just unprofessional--it was demeaning, arrogant, callous and offensive. What's most heartbreaking is how vulnerable I was in those moments--pregnancy, birth, postpartum, miscarriage--and how little compassion or professionalism he showed. If you are pregnant, postpartum, grieving, or looking for a doctor who will listen, support, and respect you--Dr. James is absolutely not that doctor. Pregnancy and loss are life-altering experiences. You deserve a provider who listens, validates, and supports you through all of it. This experience still haunts me 3.5 years later and I will unfortunately never forget it. This review reflects my personal experience and opinion. read more

I don't recommend Doctor Kenneth James unless you like poorly timed jokes and to never feel heard. I saw him because my gynecologist left town. I was extremely nervous for my IUD removal. It took two attempts to put it in which lasted 5 minutes, and I nearly passed out from the pain. Turns out it was likely never in the right place and that's why it hurt so bad. It was removed because the top part of it was stuck in the actual uterine muscle. Ouch. Anyway I was in tears when he entered the room and said I was nervous from the insertion experience. He just was cracking jokes over and over even though after the first one he could have changed his bedside manner when the "jokes weren't landing". It actually wasn't too bad coming out. He laughed out loud when I braced myself holding the bed, though. He asked what kind of birth control I wanted to use in the future. I said I wasn't in the state to make a decision right now, but I'd take every pamphlet he had. He said he didn't have any but he would go get some from the other office. He came back and said they were gone, but he would send me an email with the information. No email was ever received. I called the office twice and left one voicemail asking for the information about birth control options. I never heard back. Pretty poor experience. Good thing I'm an ICU nurse and could pull up well-researched information about my options at work. Sadly, most people don't have assess to them though. read more

Best OBGYN ever. I started seeing him for my first pregnancy and now I recommend him to all my friends. He is very caring, very knowledgable and has the best bedside manner possible. Having a natural unmedicated vaginal delivery in a hospital setting, was very important to me, so I was happy that I discovered this clinic. I transferred my care here at 32 weeks from Santa Rosa.... and everything was seamless. My husband and I are both physicians and we needed midwives and a physician that we truly trusted. Everyone I've met in that clinic (Allison, Christina, Dr. James) were extremely competent and wonderful. I appreciated his direct and calm nature. He is the only OB I have ever met that really appreciates and believes in a woman's ability to deliver unmedicated. All other OBs (along with friends/family) looked at me like I was an alien for desiring such a thing! On delivery day, I was laboring a long with my husband and my doula. There was no one telling me what I needed to do...the midwife was just a flower on the wall guiding me if I needed anything. When it came time to deliver the baby, they really just guided me and suggested things...never forced any crazy pushing. She took control when she had to, but left me to do as I pleased when I was in labor. My baby was 9lb 8oz with no labial tears. This group really is the dream team! I don't normally give reviews of doctors. It's kinda private stuff. But the raving Yelp reviews (even though they were mostly for baby delivery and I am way past that stage in life) of Dr. James and his office prompted me to make an appointment after my long standing (20+ years and 2 kids) obgyn retired and I had been gravely disappointed by the care I received from 3 different doctors I tried for various lengths of time after losing such a great one. It's been a couple of years since that first call and my first appointment. From the start, the woman on the phone was friendly and professional. Upon arriving at the office, I was set at ease by the waiting room with not a soul waiting (a lot of doctors these days double and triple book making you wait well past your appointment time) and the intimate setting. The front office was as nice as the woman I spoke to on the phone and after filling out my paperwork, I was immediately taken back by a super sweet nurse. No waiting, imagine that!?! I had an opportunity to speak to Dr. James in his office before my exam. He was professional, thorough, informative and invested time in my care as opposed to rushing through a 15 minute time slot. I can honestly say, each appointment I have had since has gone similarly and much of the same staff still works in the office (a sign of a good boss). I have never waited more than 10 minutes for my appointment and he has always taken his time and addressed all of my questions and concerns. On the couple of occasions I have had issues outside of office hours, I have been called back very quickly and, when necessary, medication prescribed without a visit. He is a doctor that cares more about his patients than making a buck off you and that deserves praise and this 5 star review. If you feel like you are just a number with your current obgyn and are trying to find a good choice for your woman's health needs, try this office out. I can't express how grateful I am for Dr. James. If you are looking for an OB during your pregnancy... Please, please - just make an appt with him now... You will be sooooo happy you did. I was a high risk pregnancy and can be very difficult for doctor's to deal with because I ask ALOT of questions ;-) and am always questioning everything that is said. It's just my way. ;-) Dr. James did an awesome job in managing me. Haha He made me feel heard .. But at the same time, gave me quick answers that comforted me, each and every time. There is something about Dr. James that you just TRUST. You immediately know you are in great hands. And trust me, you are. I will admit that he can be a bit quick with his responses and appts... But that is just his personality... He's exceptionally knowledgable and just has a confidence in what he is doing and recommending. Trust me, he is listening, caring & has your very best interest always!!!!! I had to call him after hours a few times and omggggg he was so sweet... Didn't make me feel bad for calling late night (which you always do, as a pregnant momma) Our son was born the first week of January and he handled my situation with ease and care. We had an epidural free induction (the induction was NOT Dr. James preference.. My high risk doc made us do it)... But it turned out amazing and now I want to be a birth photographer because I just loved the experience so much!!!! This review is not necessarily a reflection of Dr Kenneth James himself but of the Orange Coast Women's Medical Group he now belongs to and sees patients through. Unfortunately, the very poor experience through the clinic he now works at is going to deter many clients from even getting to meet him, even if he is a great doctor. I have been trying to schedule my first OBGYN appointment and basically you cannot talk to a person, instead have to leave a message for them to call you, and I tried more than 10 times at various times during several days. Then at some point in time (when is convenient to them) they call you, and probably at a time that is not convenient to me. I have zero trust in a place that has this kind of care to even new patients, who may have many questions. read more

Dr. James and midwife Allison were exactly what I was looking for in my birthing experience! My birth did not go anything like I planned, but they both rolled with it, were calm and professional 100% of the time, and gave me and my baby the absolute best care possible. At times when I probably should have been a little scared, I wasn't at all cuz I knew I was in the best of hands medically. Dr. James is a fast talker and likes to crack jokes. I enjoyed it. I found that his ease calmed me. He's also a more naturally minded practitioner, meaning if you ask for delayed cord clamping or an unmedicated birth, he'll make sure he does every possible to give you that. And if you want the midwife experience, he directs you to Allison who works with him. He also doesn't have an overly high rate of c-sections and only does them when medically necessary (instead of like some other doctors I've been to who seem to think c-sections should be for everyone all the time cuz they're "easier"). I'd recommend Dr. James and Allison Molinski to anyone looking to give birth more gently and naturally and wants only the best, most qualified people working with them. read more

I was in labor for 30 hours including 3 hours of pushing and he was there for me whenever I needed him. I did end up needing a c-section. He's relaxed and laid back. It took him way too long to perform the circ and my son is left with a lot of excess wrinkly and uneven foreskin that has also reattached twice (again after having a urologist manually rip it apart which was awful). Dr. James is the best doctor you can ever find. I switched from another OB doctor to him based on several recommendations from different doulas. I drove 1 hour from where I live to see him. He is kind, considerate and takes the time to get to know you. The first appointment he spent 15 minutes with me just getting to know me, my history and what kind of delivery I wanted. Another example of how nice he is, I brought my mom into one of my regular appointments and he spent extra time to show her the baby on the ultrasound. He is also very knowledgeable (my husband is an OB doctor as well and was really impressed by him). Dr. James is supportive of natural birth. I had a very long labor, Dr. James was patient and gave me the time I needed. My husband told me if I delivered with anyone else I would have had a C-section. My only complaint: I can't see him anymore now that I am not pregnant. I wish he was a family medicine doctor so that my son and I can see him indefinitely. Do your research before you pick a hospital and a doctor. HOAG has a ~40% C-section rate. The national average is ~27%. Saddleback has a ~30% C-section rate. I am so grateful everyday that I switched doctors and hospitals. read more

Dr. James has been my ob since my second pregnancy, and I am now 39 weeks pregnant with my third child. He is completely pro-mom. He is the best birth support you could ask for. As a doctor, he does not push his agenda or schedule on you, but has you call the shots and will support your choices. Of course, he will give his medical opinion and answer any questions you have, but the bottom line is, and he will say this often, he will do what you want and will support the kind of birth you desire. This is why he has so many natural birth patients. He doesn't treat pregnancy as a disease or birth as a medical complication. He is at ease and confident. Dr. James is also a very competent surgeon. My second baby was an attempted VBAC, and he gave me all the time in the world to try to get her out. He was comforting to me in the hospital, and didn't rush or worry. I was fully dilated for HOURS and trying to push my daughter out. I kept asking for more time, and he was fine with that. He was at the hospital for 12 hours with me, and we finally decided on a c-section at 4am. Even though it was late and he had been so patient, he never pushed me to do the surgery earlier than I felt ready. Last summer I had an unknown ectopic pregnancy and needed emergency surgery. I felt so relieved to see Dr. James show up at the hospital. He walked me through the whole process, literally drawing a picture of what was going on in my body and what the surgery would be like. He did a laproscopic surgery that evening at 8:30pm and I was home by 11:30pm that night. My third baby will be a VBA2C. Try to find another OB who will do that. I feel like he believes in me and my ability to birth my baby, and will give me every chance to do it. He has never expressed doubt or concern about my birth choices. Be aware, Dr. James is from New York and he does have a dry sense of humor. This might put a few people off, but once you "get" him, you'll love seeing him. And, in my emergency, his sense of humor was very welcomed. It makes you feel at ease and as though everything will be fine. Yes, he talks quickly and this may be why reviewer "C M." felt rushed out. But, he will never cut you off if you have questions. He will stay and talk as long as you need. Your first visit with him will start with a chat in his office where he will find out all about you, your history, and your desires/plans for your pregnancy or your gynecological care. The only time I've ever had to wait in the waiting room for more than 5 minutes was when I was late to my appointment. They are efficient. I am usually in and out of there in 20 minutes. And, even though he was completely there for me during my birth and emergency surgery, I have never had an appointment cancelled because he was in the hospital. It's like he never sleeps. I don't know how he does it. If you are looking for a doctor who will hear you out, support your choices, not pressure you, and who will actually BE there for your birth (he is in a solo practice - so you won't end up with a doctor you never saw), stop looking and make an appointment with Dr. James now. read more

Update 2: birth control caused a near destruction of my thyroid, and as soon as I went off of it, my thyroid issues solved themselves. Dr. James almost destroyed my life - they told me due to long term hormone issues from my birth control abuse (aka non-stop taking them wirh jo artificial break for me period) going unaddressed I would have to take hormone shots ever 8-12 hours for the rest of my life. I have a copper IUD which has caused problems but my depression and panic attacks are almost entirely gone. read more

After my first appointment with him, I didn't think I would go back. I thought he talked too fast, and I didn't think he would be 'caring' enough, especially, since my 5 month pregnancy hormones were telling me I am the most important and fragile creature in the universe. I went back because some friends just raved about him, and I thought I must be missing something. (But scheduled appointments with two other doctors already) Two kids later, I can't imagine a different doctor, and every single story I have heard from every single mommy I know, about other, even really good doctors, confirms that he is the best. He puts you at ease, and he doesn't treat pregnancy like a disease, (which was shocking at first), and he can be really funny and lighthearted, but he will never overlook a concern that you actually have, and he will arrange for further testing/etc, until all is settled. I was super paranoid and had 8 million concerns, and he navigated them all seamlessly. My husband loved having him as our doctor, because every time I got stressed out or paranoid, he would talk me back down to earth, and I'd feel like I was just a normal pregnant human being again. Ditto the other reviewers - there's never a wait, and I've never had an appt cancelled, even though he seems to always be delivering babies. He is like a fetus whisperer, and they all love him, and don't mess with his schedule? He might also never sleep? I don't know. He's obviously busy, but you never feel rushed. I don't know how he does it, but he makes you feel like you're his priority. He doesn't push his schedule/agenda on you, and he's truly about what you want. Natural, VBAC, C-Section, all the drugs, whatever. But he guides you within your choice, so that you make the best of it, and you never feel alone or second guess anything. If there's a better way, he'll tell you about it. He's the same way about other, non pregnancy issues. It's been said before, but I will also repeat that literally, every nurse that walked into my room would say glowing things about working with him. Some nurses, when they checked incision would recognize that it was his - (it's a tiny, clean, low incision). I think his office staff is great, and I've never had any issues dealing with them, or insurance, or his wife, but honestly, this guy could work with a bunch of dyslexic toothless harpies as his front office, and I'd still pick him over any other doctor. read more

You can have a healthy pregnancy but you never know when your labor and delivery could turn for the worst, and it takes a quick thinking, excellent doctor to turn the situation back under control. Dr. James did just that for us during the delivery of our son. I had a normal, healthy pregnancy with no red flags. He was caring, patient, well educated, answered all our questions and concerns, and has an awesome sense of humor to boot. We started going into labor early morning and it went fine for the first few hours. I thought for sure I was going to have a natural birth, I practiced meditation and yoga to prepare myself for it. However, our son had other plans and his heart rate fell twice before I was fully dilated. Dr. James was always a jovial, funny man. But I saw his mood switch from funny to seriously professional in a split second the moment he learned our baby was having a hard time. While he is an advocate for a natural delivery, he knew and I knew that that would not be the case with my situation. Everything went by very fast. Our son was born less than 15 minutes after his heart rate fell the second time via c-section. Within 45 minutes, I was resting peacefully after major surgery in my room, while Dr. James, my husband, and our newborn son finished watching the Jets game on TV. Just like that! He took complete control. All the nurses in Saddleback love and respect him and I could tell from the way he took command of the operating room (albeit, I was in sheer panic I was about to get cut open but I did not show that. I never had to wait more than 5 minutes to see him and he always was prompt in returning my calls whenever I had a question. He's laid back and very calming, but he's definitely the guy you want on your team if things go sideways. I began seeing Dr. James during my first pregnancy with my daughter in 2015. Of course I was completely hypochondriacal and neurotic, because I was (and still am!) obsessed with Google and diagnosing myself. Dr. James always kept it real with me and made me feel at ease which I totally appreciated. When it came to delivery, I was induced since I was VERY overdue...not really my "birth plan" but sometimes you just have to roll with it. My labor was rough but I had a great outcome because of Dr. James' willingness to be super flexible when I hit the proverbial wall. When the nurses at Saddleback asked who my Dr was and I told them, every single one commented on how much they love working with Dr. James and what a great physician he is. So true. He also gave my a bear claw donut when I was recovering in the hospital so thanks for looking out, doc! Lol! I am so grateful for the Laguna Beach OB/GYN practice and all that they stand for. Dr. James and the midwives within the practice make a dream team for expectant women! Elaine Kopinga was the Midwife present for our birthing experience and she was amazing! She was positive, supportive, patient, encouraging and a great leader in the room. Happy to finally find a new gynecologist. I moved here in 2017 and just now finding good care. I've been to another gynecologist in 2018 and was super disappointed by the front desk and the physician. Dr. Kenneth James met with me first in his office prior to my exam. He went over my history and concerns with me. Afterwards he did my exam efficiently. He is probably your best bet for a natural childbirth if that is your preference. I had a homebirth and he didn't give me an ounce of grief about it (it's hit and miss amongst doctors lol). He said he attends births at a birth center nearby and does hands-off birthing if in the future I'd like to save $7000 from midwifery care because insurance covers the birth center. Anyways, thought he was really caring and attentive. He does talk wicked fast and I felt like he was in a hurry, but it might just be how he is. Anyways, front staff was excellent and very nice; I didn't wait forever to be seen either which is an unusual treat. Overall I really like this doctor and the staff and will be keeping them for my future care. read more

I had the absolute honor of having Allison Molinski as my midwife during the birth of our daughter over four years ago. Throughout my labor Allison intuitively knew when to give me words of encouragement , when to give us space, and when to give me the courage I needed to surrender to the process and to push through my own mental hurdles within my long natural labor. She was a calm and confident presence that empowered me to believe in myself and my body's ability. She consistently followed our lead and offered us options without pressure or wavering in her belief in my own body and baby's natural timing. With her guidance, we welcomed our little girl with no interventions. I would highly recommend Allison. I have had the pleasure of having Dr. James as my OBGYN for the last five years. He has counseled me on everything from grieving a miscarriage, debating a birthing center versus a hospital birth, changes in my body and hormones after having my daughter, interpreting my family history health risks and considering my future family planning with IVF. I truly appreciate the partnership Dr. James has created with midwives and his philosophy on birth as a natural process. He empowers me in my decisions with information, he encourages me to trust my gut, and he has an amazing way of letting me know what NOT to worry about or what is out of my control. I would highly recommend Dr. James. As far as I am concerned, these two are a dream team! read more
