Summary: Great experience with Brian buying a house in the Evergreen area of San Jose, strongly recommend. The Full Story: We met Brian at an Open House and, without any commitment from us, he started trying to match our needs with a house. We were impressed with his diligence, attempt to understand us and openness so we went with him as our agent. It took us awhile to find a house so we had a lot of house visits with Brian and some of the things we appreciated included: - Area Knowledge: In an advantage over the online services, Brian frequently had the tip on homes prepping to sell. In a market where there's only a few days between a showing and a sale, this is important for giving a bit more time for diligence and prep a bid. Brian also occasionally got us into homes before they went on the market. - Diligence / Responsiveness: Brian doesn't stop texting. I don't think he sleeps. I'm not sure. But we appreciated the low bar of formality on communications, texting back and forth when convenient, trading links to new homes, etc. - Frankness: What I've not seen in a lot of RE agents is the frankness to call a lemon a lemon. When we'd do walkthroughs, Brian would proactively flag the negative for us even if I never would have known (ex: brands for things like water heaters). - Creativity: We were always open to fixers and Brian was always a valuable sounding board in walkthroughs for ideas on how easy/hard it would be to fix up a particular place. - Network: If you need a thing related to a house, Brian's got a person in the contact's list. Six months after close, we're still texting Brian for his advice on household problems or recommendations for a X to fix a Y. Brian also hooked us up with a loan agent who gave us a better rate than we were able to find ourselves and who provided exceptional service (Satish Dadral). - Soft Sell: We never once felt like Brian was encouraging us to spend more than we wanted to on multiple home bids we had with him. One time we even missed a house because he encouraged us to not increase our bid any further because the house wasn't worth it ( ... it turned out the house had major water damage and would have been a lemon anyway). - Enthusiasm: Brian's not a bubbly agent like many others, but we always felt like Brian really enjoys his work and is nerdy about it (a high compliment from us) and was always up to check out a new listing. - Thoroughness With Documentation: When it came to disclosures, Brian always read them and gave us his expert thoughts. He helped us learn how to focus on the important parts in the documentation. - Family Background: Small point, but maybe rarely mentioned ... Brian's got a family and for parents of very young children his experience helped us think through what we're going to need in a house as our kids grow up. read more

I usually don't write reviews but I had such a great experience that I had to share. We had such an amazing experience with Block Change Real Estate. We can not praise them enough. We were worried as we've been told by a lot of family and friends that buying a house is really stressful. But our experience was everything but stressful. Brian has helped us purchase two homes in the past 7 years. Our experience working with him on both purchases has been nothing but excellent. Brian is a rarity in the real estate market; he brings experience, commitment and deft to the deal making process. He also has a construction background; he can quickly spot red flags in property inspection reports and can also provide good ballpark estimates for required renovation work after buying. Our first purchase was a town-house in West San Jose in 2012. We were first-time buyers and six months late into the bidding frenzy. After losing a few bids, we had gotten a bit desperate and were willing to pay a lot more for the town-house. But Brian correctly judged the market situation and asked us to hold our horses on the bidding process. And he was right on; we paid only 4% over the ask price. Our second purchase, this year, was in Saratoga. Brian gave very good estimates on the amount of work we would have had to get done on the first two properties we had gotten interested in. That helped us view the ask price in the right perspective and we decided not to proceed further. For our final purchase, Brian handled the extended negotiations, drawn out over several days, very well. He made sure we didn't come across as over-enthusiastic in our first bid and made sure the seller understood the "pain" we were going through as we raised our bid. In the end, we were able to get the house below the seller's expectations. Now, here is the interesting part. Brian was on vacation for part of the time the negotiations happened and we didn't even know about it until it was time for him to take the flight back. We communicated with him and he with the seller's agent as if he was in office. And he made sure that his partner, Thao, covered for him while he was offline in the flight. Over the last few years I have experienced a bunch of great experiences with great people across the service industry, be it banks, restaurants, luxury resorts, travel companies etc. Home Buying never strikes you as a place where you can have an exceptional experience. It is always linked with stressful times and hard decisions. My wife and I were really surprised with how Brian changed our perception completely. We only had to point at a house and Brian would have all his homework done, visit the house, read through the disclosures, summarise all the good as well as the bad points for any house, all this before we went to look at it with him. All of this at half a day's notice. He made home buying so easy that it was just a matter of signing over a line. He identified the mortgage company for us, arranged for a contractor, negotiated with the contractor, suggested changes and investments that we need to make to the house to improve it's appeal as well as increase its value.
