After the head of Whole Foods market was exposed trying to manipulate the buzz around the stock on the Yahoo finance boards, I decided to evangalize the benefits of old school Fruit and Vegetable markets to all who will listen. Blocks is the real deal. You will not find gourmet obscure produce here. Nor will you find overpriced "organic" labeled produce. What you will find is the freshest and cheapest produce in the Detroit area. They opened for the harvest season on August 1 and I was able to buy a basket of the first Michigan grown tomatoes for 5.99. Thats probably 30 medium sized tomatoes that are naturally sweet and ripe, unlike the crap at the supermarket, or the overpriced stuff at the upscale outfits like Nino Salvaggio or Westborn. Most everything is locally grown. I was able to fill 3 huge bags of yummies for $20. This is best deal in Detroit. Also, they have Oakwood Bakery products... Slice some tomatoes, drizze with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and finely chopped basil and eat one of the best sandwiches ever. I just may have to eat one now. read more

Great place to go for best prices on flowers and vegetables. I even go there twice a week when they are open. I'm starting to be a regular! I just love going there seeing the different flowers and colors, and maybe a little people watching. Interesting to see what people purchase. Oh my goodness I have not written a review for here, shocking! This place is amazing for cheap, fresh and tasty produce. They have great flowers and plants too. Like Rodger says the goods are not gourmet or organic, it's plain ol Michigan goodness straight from the garden at rock bottom prices. This allows you to fill up your belly on delicious healthiness for not much coin. Veggies, fruits, herbs, really all the products here are top notch. I always have to pick up tomatoes, fresh green beans, watermelon, berries and corn in season. They have great new potatoes, carrots, peppers of all varieties, I could go on and on. Whatever is grown in Michigan you can find here. There is plenty to room to maneuver in here, things are well displayed and there is more than plenty to choose from. They are only open seasonally and they are only stocked with what is fresh so stock varies. From spring through the fall though, Block's is the best place to be! read more

I love Block's it is a southeast Michigan mad house! Every spring this place is rocking it out finding a parking spot can be challenging... frustration can be had. This place can be crazy and don't even think about it on the weekend..unless you like aggravation. That being said I love it! The place is huge one of the best ever I've seen seriously! The selection amazing. I live close by it is very close to DTW and a must go to place for gardener enthusiasts if they don't have it then I would be shocked! Absolutely awesome place. I went today on a Monday morning early and parking was still a *itch however got some beautiful perennials and great flowering baskets at a great price. Love this place. It's alright but insanely hectic and a bit unorganized. Many things were very inexpensive and I believe I only spent 2.80$ total for kiwis, sweet potatoes, clementines and a handful of okra. Everything very wallet friendly. But on one side was the bakery section with sparse selection of items and on the opposite side was a variety of canned items ranging from jelly to a southerners favorite, chow chow. I also saw popular grocery shelf potato chips and some salsas and other goods, why are things like this at a farmers market? And that section with corn.... Basically a huge wagon-full of corn and people trying to squash themselves and their carts into the small space. I think overall, it's just too crowded and hectic. Great selection but overwhelming if you don't have a few things in mind and not a whole grocery list. read more

They sell mostly plants, but a little bit of produce. It was very busy when I was there at noon, in May. Huge selection of vegetable plants, as well as flowers and decorative plants. It's a big long and thin collection of greenhouses. They do ask you to wear masks, and I felt safe. read more

I love this place. Fresh and seasonal produce, open market, great prices, seasonal decorations...everyone comes here =deal. It's my first time here and I really like this place. You can pretty much find your local produce for a great deal and any seasonal items will be here first! Block's is my favorite greenhouse. They are crazy busy whenever I go there, but they are also the cheapest, and they have a good variety. Little tomato and strawberry plants are 59-79 cents! Herbs are only $1.49 -- half of what most places charge. Even their MiracleGro is pretty cheap. It is a long way to go for me, but I always find that it's worth it. My only complaint is that their season is so darn short: They're basically only open for the month of May, and there are often still freeze warnings when they open. Still, definitely worth the trip. I just wish they were open longer. read more

I love Blocks! My only issue is the crouds of people that love it too. The have really good prices. Much of the produce is locally grown by them. The staff is very friendly. Have patience, but it's cool. In the Spring the flowers/plants are very well priced and it's a mad house then as well. read more

Mom and I bought several tomato plants. In spite of good soil, sun, watering, one (Better Boy) never produced anything, I'm ripping it out this week without getting a single fruit from it, another (Early Girl) only produced in July and August (not early), and small fruit, about the size of ping-pong balls, although many. The grape tomatoes were similarly worthless. We are questioning what if any varieties for next year, and whether we wish to return to Block's at all. Love this Downriver staple! It's really REFRESHING to buy produce that doesn't have stickers on it so the cashier knows it's an eggplant! All local Michigan grown produce. I went this morning thinking I'd beat the weekend crowd, wrong it was bustling!!! However it's harvest season and I had a cart full of healthy bounty! Plus some beautiful gladiolus that are so stunning! The cherry on top was on my way out the cashier asked would you like a free cabbage?! She had a box full of cabbages she was offering! Staff is usually pretty awesome, but every now and then you'll get a 20-something who's overwhelmed with the rude crowd. They are rude, but this place is busy for a reason! We are always welcome by the nice cashiers or those helping around. I normally bring about 8-10 of our Seniors here for their healthy grocery shopping days and they love coming here for the ears of corn as well as the green tomato's. The fruit is good too! read more

There's nothing wrong with this place. It is heaven. Whether you're coming in May for plants and gardening gear or in July for veggies and other farmers market goods, you won't be disappointed. I recommend going on a slightly rainy day, when less people are likely to come out - on weekends it can get insanely busy, and trying to get your cart through the narrow aisles may be an exercise in futility. read more

Blocks Stand and Greenhouse is simply amazing. I am a huge fan of the prices! I can get fresh and tasty produce for half the price I would usually pay at my local stores! This has easily become my main grocery store. In the Spring, there are many wonderful plants to choose from. As for the fruits and Veggies, they usually open around Mid- July. I recommend you go when they first open, because that's when the food is freshest. One of the greatest and most tastiest foods I MUST buy when I get there is CORN! (It's simply outstanding!) I highly recommend this Greenhouse for anyone who's interested in the freshest, tastiest, yet cheapest produce there is. I rate 5 stars all the way! read more

Best flower prices every summer. The staff is friendly and helpful. I would recommend parking near the rear entrance and working your way toward the front then back to the rear check out. They are only open for about a month so if they are open they are busy. Stay away from the main aisle and you will love much faster. Alright, listen up. I am so far removed from regular suburbia life it's not even funny. Being homey, well, I ain't got time fo dat. The minute I stepped foot inside Blocks the place made me feel like I could conquer this whole domesticated thing, and guess what.. I went home and nailed it! I bought flowers, herbs and pots to my heart's content. There was a little learning curve, however. Apparently there's little cards that tell you how tall those beauties will grow, and apparently I am drawn to the mammoth type of plants. Yeah, that's cool too but I mostly needed some smaller specimens. Color - scheme and flower wise I found exactly what I was looking for, and I bought the most darling fresh herbs, ever. Block's is literally plant upon plant and flower upon flower in a boatload of hot 'N humid greenhouses. If you're into this sort of thing I'm sure you'd love it here. If you're..ermm..starting out at this whole (house) wife thing it may be a little daunting but soon enough you will be delighted by the beautiful flowers (and their cheap prices). Just try not to go overboard.. even though they're cheap I still managed to spend a fortune. Story of my life right there. Next challenge - don't kill the new flowers. Wow, we went from the Eastern Market before going to Block's, in the same morning, and Block's was a better bargain, with more choices, and many more plants. Block's is a seasonal greenhouse. When they are open, they do a booming business, but they are also closed when its out of season. It was crazy busy in the parking lot, but the store wasn't as bad as the store is spread out over a series of greenhouses (25-30). They sell everything from flowers, to bushes, to plants, herbs and seeds. If you can't find the flora product you want, then its either illegal, or you don't need it. I think I counted they had 10 different peppers, including Ghost pepper plants. Prices were half of Eastern Market. Later in the season, they sell produce. So if you are going to the airport (dropping off or picking up), leave 30 minutes early, and swing by this place, and see if they are open. I'm sure you will find something. read more

With the amount of complaining I do about the prices of produce, I am very surprised I had not been here. This farm market is probably the best in the Metro Detroit area. The selection of fruits and vegetables is very nice. While they may not have some of the more exotic produce found in Westborn or Nino's, they do have very good selections of the standards (I have never been presented with so many options for peachs and plums EVER). The biggest winner for me about this place is the prices. Everything is half the price or more cheaper than a regular super market, and when you buy in bulk the prices get even better. So if you are the type of person who can eat 6 apples in a day (Christain Bale if you read this, Block's is your weight cutting answer), then the bulk discounts will be well worth it. read more

I LOVE Block's! In the spring, the greenhouses are full to the brim with flowers of every type and color. Even if you're not going to buy anything, you've got to go just for the sights and scents. Late summer brings the produce market into full swing with fruits, veggies, and breads, many locally sourced. In the fall, you can get mums, pumpkins, and other autumnal staples. Their selection is extensive, the produce is fresher than the large grocers, and the flowers seem to be top notch. The kicker on all of this is how affordable everything is! This weekend we walked out with four large flower baskets, 10-12 pounds of fruits and veggies, and a few packs of lawn bags for $30. How can you beat that?! This place can get pretty packed, and things get frustrating when you're in shopping cart gridlock. So bring your patience. But it'll be worth the trip! read more

Yes, it's crowded but for very good reason. I grew up downriver and my parents passed on the knowledge of this gem. I shopped their when I lived in Trenton & Grosse Isle and still do even though I live in Troy. You can not beat the quality or prices anywhere. I have to say too that while it may be a bit crowded those long lines move like crazy. They have around eight registers with 2 people working at each. I tend to agree with John W's recommendations and his review of Blocks is no exception. Well worth the drive from Farmington Hills (and a bonus on the trip was seeing Air Force One parked at the airport). There's just greenhouse after greenhouse! It's like they never end and the prices are really good. I got all my flowers and vegetable plants today but may have to go back to see what else looks good. Oh, and they do have some shrubs and trees. I got hydrangeas for $10 that are as big as what I've seen at nursery's around here. Be sure to get a wagon, rather than a shopping cart, because you're sure to fill it up in no time. Right now they're only selling plants so we'll have to make a trip back this summer for produce. read more

If you find something - you'd better grab it , because chances are it'll be sold out once everyone figures out they're open. I'd go as far as saying I'd choose this place over the Eastern Market any day of the week. It's a little tightly packed, but everything seems to be where it should be. What I mean is all of the Peppers are in one place and the same goes for the Greens and so forth. The prices beat any other place I have been to hands down. Where else can you get "as much corn on the cob you can fit in a plastic produce bag" for only two bucks? That is madness! Any grocery store you got to you get maybe 4 ears for that price and here you can fit twice as many if not more in a bag as long as you can arrange them properly. One lady had what looked to be a dozen in her bag. This is the perfect place to buy your Pumpkins for Halloween too. Here they are three for $10.00 regardless of the size. And they have some massive ones. Any other place you go either sells them by the pound or you get two for that price and they are just average size at best. Finally experiencing this nugget of awesomness was a little bitter sweet for me. I am sad I just found it now after I moved to the East Side, but happy I have it in my repertoire for the future. OVERALL: this is a large place, like Eastern Market. PRICES: 5/5. A flat is $8, mulch 3 for $10. QUALITY: 3/5 on med/large plants. I would suggest this place for base goods, but ur eye candy stuff elsewhere. SOCIAL DISTANCING (post virus): 1/5. I went on a rainy Sunday (not Mem Wkend either) thinking not many are going to go out in the rain. ITS A ZOO. I would have turned around if I hadn't driven so far and had a deadline to get my flowers in place. They would really only need to hire maybe 3 people : 1) to manage the chkout lines to make sure of staying on 6ft markers; 2) Manage how many people enter into the first and second barns (people disperse after) - I was very upset how people were almost on top of me and I couldnt get more distant. VIRUS CITY. 3) someone to hand out maps- (I didnt see a map til I got half way thru) AND THEY MUST MOVE THE MULCH. traffic is trying to go to/fro to 2nd parking lot AND people are trying to get in line to get mulch....WHAT A MESS. It was totally jammed and I almost got hit. The mulch guy was at wits end trying to figure who was trying to get in parking lot 2 and who needed mulch. A BUTF* TOTALLY DISTRAUGHT MESS. read more

Great produce, super cheap. Get your regular groceries at Meijer but come out here for a fruits and veggies haul. Especially love it in the fall time when you can get all sorts of pumpkins, cornstalks, hay bales, etc. read more

I love Blocks. Living in New Boston (about 5 miles away) I have zero options for "grocery-type" food. Having Blocks from the end of July and August is such an important perk. Their prices are outstanding and everything is super fresh. The best deal is the stuff a bag full of corn for $2.99. They literally are driving it in via tractor as you're selecting the ears you want. Going on a weekday is much better than a weekend- and you can expect to wait in line for a bit, but it's totally worth it. read more

Carrie and John know what's up! Driving here from Farmington Hills is well worth it! I agree that you should take time to explore the never ending maze of greenhouses. Also grab a wagon as soon as you can - though there seem to be more than previous years. We've been going to Block's for many years...except one where we went somewhere else because we were too busy - never again. We have found tge plants fron Block's to be healthier and higher producing. The selection is second to none and reasonably priced. An added plus is helpful staff that usually seems to know thier stuff. This year I was excited to find chocolate mint and several heirloom tomato varieties. Also the gerber daisies were looking mighty fine this year. Checkout is a breeze if you keep an eye on the lanes further from the main traffic. Be sure to grab a sheet of the plastic to keep the dirt from getting into your car's carpet. read more
