My neighbor's competing quote had an undefined "yard waste" disposal amount so who knows how much they would have charged us! We hired A-1 Stone to remove the concrete driveway and retaining wall, and then to rebuild the driveway with pavers and the retaining wall with concrete blocks. Additionally, proper drainage was installed behind the retaining wall. The work was performed by the company's owner, Paul Singh, along with two of his employees. Remarkably, A-1 Stone completed all the work in just three days, and the results are excellent. Everything looks great, and Paul and his team were a pleasure to work with. I would definitely consider contracting them again. I do have two (minor) recommendations for A-1 Stone to improve: Website Improvement: The company's website is somewhat lacking. It's difficult to see examples of their work or to assess their experience with specific types of projects. A portfolio showcasing past work would be very beneficial. Product Variety: The selection of colors and products they offered was rather limited. Other companies provided brochures featuring a range of stone colors and types, while A-1 Stone only offered a single option for our retaining wall: grey concrete blocks. Overall, it was a relief to work with A-1 Stone. They completed the job efficiently with great results, and there were no hassles or problems. Furthermore, both Paul and his employees spoke English, which made communication much easier, especially since many contractors employ workers who only speak Spanish or Portuguese.

What I understood was that he was going to dig it out and grade it, but he said that wasn't true. Had I known that was all he was going to do I would have never agreed to pay $1045 for a 7x32 gravelly, lumpy strip. Regardless, I was willing to pay for the work done, but when I pointed out that he lied about the price of materials, disposal fees, and hours worked, he still refused to adjust the price and threatened to take me to collections, so I paid him. He also refused to provide an itemized receipt. Also, he "conveniently" left out tax in the price of the estimate, so if you do decide to use him, make sure you add 10% to whatever price he quotes. Also, this thing he did, if he thought this was truly what I wanted (a non functional gravel strip) I would hope that a professional landscaper would advise me against it. Maybe say, "Hey, if you want to do it right you'll have to terrace this, grade this, etc. and that'll cost this." Instead, he found his mark (me) and found an easy payday. Afterwards I asked him, do you think this looks good? Does that look like a parking spot to you? Would you put your name on this? He pointedly did not answer those questions. Because the answer to all three of those questions is no. If you want more details, like the the screenshot of his work truck leaving at 10am but he telling me he was working until 11am, check out my text conversation with him. But again, if you do decide to use him, get it in writing, detailed, itemized, and tax included.

After accepting the quote, which was very reasonable and slightly under the competition, I was astonished with how fast they were able to do the actual work, especially in the current high demand market for landscaping in Seattle! The quality of the work was very high (see attached picture of the transformation of old, wobbly pavers with overgrown weeds everywhere to brand new interlocking pavers). The hedge overall was trimmed well but the corner was over-trimmed because they started there with a ladder that wasn't tall enough. (I came out to stop them before they over-trimmed the entire hedge) For the weed removal, after they left, I spent 3 hours removing the weeds they missed. I suppose I shouldn't have paid them or let them leave until all the weeds are removed, but based on existing reviews I trusted that they would have that attention to detail. They also removed some plants that I wanted to keep. Based on that, I'm left with the impression that they aren't very good at determining what a weed is. Nice guys, but for $750, I expected better.
