Basically its like ordering food at the window on the boardwalk, so there's no real "service" other than someone dropping food at your table. Prices are steep, just like the boardwalk. The tacos were (just) ok. They have fresh ingredients but its just a taco so why shouldnt it have fresh ingredients? The chips are good but you gotta pay for them, unlike a restaurant that gives an order free, similar to bread and butter. Atmosphere is average, no frills. Not many people there but we went early. This place is towards the end of the boardwalk which makes it perfect for a quick bite before heading home from the OC beach. Staff is nice with a few younger people working the kitchen. Seemed well organized for the most part. Didn't have salt on the tables or to give out really which was weird. When I make chips at home I always sprinkle salt right after frying which is a great tip. Free to you The tacodilla I got was the surf & turf version and was pretty good. The cheese was crispy on the edges that hit the pan and inside was stuffed. Could've used bigger pieces of shrimp though to get that seafood flavor through. Chips needed salt but they were great homemade and the quac was good too. Needed salt in that as well. Blue cactus is a taco shop on the boardwalk with Mexican classics like tacos, quesadillas, chips etc. you can order tacos al a Carte or in a set of 3. They have a variety of meats and toppings you can add to each of them. We ordered up front at the counter and the man working was very friendly and helpful. There are plenty of tables inside, and a few on the boardwalk too. There are also restrooms inside which is very rare to find at other places on the boardwalk. We ordered a variety of tacos, all of which were very tasty. My favorite was the carnitas tacos in the crispy shell (but you can also get soft shell flour or corn). The guacamole and queso were both delicious as were the cinnamon sugar chips we ended the meal with. I would definitely come back and recommend this place to others! read more

Now they've moved to a bigger space and it has just gone down the hill smh. The vibes in the new place are not it. The service now is plain old bad. The two times I went here this year they forgot my sauces on the side a that I ordered and paid extra for. Def recommend the quesadilla over the burrito if you asked me. Blue Cactus gets five stars because it was much better than I expected, considering that you're kind of a captive audience on the boardwalk. The portions are good and the prices (again being a captive boardwalk audience) are reasonable. The grilled chicken tacos tasted fresh and full of flavor, the salsa has a delightful zip, and the crispy flour tortillas were a nice touch. I don't usually comment on to-go food packaging, but since we took our food to the oceanside benches, I appreciated that everything was packed up in sturdy flip-top containers for easy lap-balancing. read more

THE SERVICE IS THE ONLY THING HOLDING ME BACK FROM GIVING IT 5 STARS. This applies to both 9th and 12th street. The food is excellent, especially their Carnitas tacos, BUT, their service is consistently bad over the last few years. While their staff are all nice people, no matter what day or time, they never seem to know what they are doing and seem to ignore customers for long periods of time before addressing even 1 customer in an otherwise not busy store. Prime example: today, I call them to place an order and they put me on hold. Nothing wrong with that. EXCEPT, they don't put me on hold and instead just put the phone down, where in the background I just hear the staff talking (seemingly not asking for help either), and then the call hung up. Still not the end of the world, but after 5 callbacks, I finally got through and placed the order. To make matters worse when I get to the restaurant, even though it was dead, and I was the only customer at the register, no one addressed me whatsoever. I stood there for a few minutes at the register just waiting for someone to even look at me. And I know this one just occurred today but I kid you not this is the way it is nearly every time I go there. After I paid, I had to wait a few minutes for my food. No biggie, I was early... but, when it was done, one of the cooks just put it on the counter, didn't call out a name, no one acknowledged it at all, so I just took my box. However, in that box were the best tacos ever. I'm telling you these tacos are incredible. Incredible enough for me to put up with otherwise bad service. I know it's tough to hire good people and stuff, especially with summer teen jobs, I totally get it and I certainly don't fault any employees directly but at large, I genuinely feel like a lot of the issues they have truly come down to management. Training employees to acknowledge their customers is a very important thing especially in a summer market like this. It's a little things like that that can make for a much better experience if the employees were just trained properly. Only writing this long of a review out of love, because I do genuinely love the food, and I think the place has just so much potential to improve. Oh, and while I'm at it, I genuinely don't understand why a restaurant who has primarily larger foot traffic on weekends is closed on a Sunday. There are two locations on the boardwalk (one around 10th street and one around 12th street). We went to the 10th street location, but assume it will be the same in the other location. Both locations open at 2pm, so lunch is not an option. All the staffs seem to be teenagers, with a sign stating "our staffs are in training, please be patient.". Everyone is pretty friendly and works fast. But the overall quality of the food is probably average at best. We had three mahi tacos, $20+ and they are very small and tasted bland. I had to open the little carry out box to check since it looked like only one taco could fit in there. Anyway, probably shouldn't hold too much high hopes for fast food on the boardwalk but even compared with other restaurants on the boardwalk, this one falls a little short on quality and value. read more

Our mistake was probably taking Blue cactus tacos to go and not eating on the boardwalk. My main complaint was the price (which is to be expected when eating on the boardwalk). We got a taco bowl, three tacos and chips and the total was over $50 when you included tax and tip. However, I have heard many positive things about this place and love that you can get Mexican food on the boardwalk. Their other location looks a little bigger/nicer so maybe I will try that next time. The highlight was definitely the fresh/warm tortilla chips. They were still warm by the time we got home. The 12th street location is easy to pass as it looks more like a surf shop from the signage. I decided to check them out based on the food recommendation from my parents. After looking at their menu, I decided to order online because they ask for 30 mins of prep time. I arrived exactly at my pickup time, however I had to wait an additional 10 minutes in the line. I did see my food was ready and sitting on the counter, but this area was inaccessible and there was not an alternative pick up line or signage. I was behind three others that were waiting to order. It seemed a bit disorganized behind the counter, causing the group in front of me to wait a bit longer than I would have had I not ordered ahead. After what felt like much longer than 10 minutes, I finally got my meal. I tried the hard flour shell with carnitas. My boyfriend did the surf and turf in the soft flour. The food was delicious! The price point was a bit high. It cost an additional 75 cents for sour cream and the portion was very small so I'd recommend getting a side of it instead. We also tried the honey sriracha which was sweet with a hot kick. We also had the queso and chips. Both delicious! I would definitely recommend trying the hard flour as it was just as crunchy as a corn shell but did not crumble into pieces. My last bit of frustration came as the taco started to drip and I realized that there were not napkins in my bag. I was frustrated to have to go back to the store and get napkins which were placed where a long line of people were still waiting to order. I don't feel like it is a lot to expect napkins in a takeout bag. Overall, the food is great and the service needs work. There seem to be a few kinks to workout before they'll be fully worth the high price point. If you're willing to spend around $50 on 6 tacos and a side, then definitely check out Blue Cactus. read more

Order a beef taco on a hard shell however the shell had been pre-made and wasn't warmed which would have added to the overall experience. Hot meat and cold shell in my book don't add up Knowing this I would ask for my shell to be warmed. Watched the shrimp being cold fresh and made with a good number of seasonings. The wait can be long if you go during the dinner rush, but I went around 5:45pm and only had to wait five minutes for my food. This is another one of my reviews which was very difficult to rate, the food was 4 or 5-star but the service side was 3-star at best(possibly 2-star). I'll try to explain. This place is located right on the south end of the boardwalk. The food was amazing, for starters we ordered chips, salsa, guacamole and queso, it was fresh and delicious. We also ordered a few tacos, I ordered a carnitas taco and a brisket taco, both were good but the carnitas was my favorite. They have some options for shells. flour or corn I went with the flour with they take a flour tortilla and give it a quick flash fry which makes it a little crispy and flakey, it was different and good. On to the not so good part of my dining experience. This is one of those places where you order up front at the register then they give you an number and bring your food out to you. They are beyond slow at the register, when we arrived there were only 3 orders ahead of us in line yet we stood in line for over 15 minutes just to place our order...this is simply unacceptable. If you decided you want to order something else or even buy another soda good luck with that. I finished my Jarritos Soda while eating our chips and guac so I wanted to order another one but there was no way in hell I was going to wait in line another 15 minutes for a soda. My daughter also wanted to try a soda after tasting mine but again, no way we were waiting in line. I was on the fence about this review and almost left a 2-star review but the food is good. I will also add that my Jarritos soda was not very cold, they must have just put it into the cooler so I went up to ask for a cup of ice, I cut the line because there was no way in hell I was waiting 15 minutes for a cup of ice but it still took me some time to get anyone's attention. After we ordered we still ended up waiting about 15 minutes more for a couple tacos. I understand they make everything to order but 15 minutes for a few taco's on top of the wait to order is excessive. Blue Cactus management, you need to address your wait/line issue, you are losing money because you don't have your shit together. Basedon other reviews I have read I am not the only person that thinks you have an issue in this department. There were two parties in line behind us that simply left your establishment after waiting in line forever.
