Burger - bottom bun was quite soggy, slaw was very nice. Patty was more mush and just squishes out of the bun. Decent flavor but would have liked it crisper and more solid. They provide Mango Habanero hot sauce which is really cool. Friend got the Bison Burger on Gluten-free bread. She was happy with her burger. I thought it looked funny on a slice of bread instead of a bun. She loved the salad too. My friend tried the grapefruit gelato and said it was fine. I got the Peach Bourbon pie advertised on the "today special" board. Good pie. Good solid crust, peaches inside were tasty, weird jelly filling but wasn't so bad. Not too sweet. Had heard about this restaurant years ago and finally got the chance to go there tonight... good was disappointing...potato bacon soup came in a small bowl for $9.50 and didn't taste like potatoes and bacon. Thai shrimp was more like Cajun shrimp. Marmala salad which was highly recommended tasted more like it had a salty peanut sauce... first set of music was way too loud and something maybe old people would listen to. THey charge $20 cover charge automatically on your bill even if you are having a meal quick is way too much for that music. This trendy restaurant in the Ritchie neighbourhood offers live music on evenings and Sunday brunch along with the great selection of food! We were all hungry for breakfast food - getting the Breakfast Sandwich and the Huevos Rancheros but it hit the spot. The potatoes on the side of the sandwich could have used a bit more seasoning but I added more hot sauce instead. And really the homemade hot sauce? Who wouldn't want more of that? Went to a wine pairing dinner that was amazing. There were 5 courses beautifully paired with a wine. The service was fantastic in spite of having over 50 people attending. The corned beef hash is the best breakfast in the city. I eat allot on the road due to work travel and this place has it figured out- normal portions so I don't feel guilty leaving food on the plate (I'm 6'2 and 190), real potatoes, scrambled eggs that are soft and not fried on edges, corned beef that seems meaty and not so thin it turns into meat leather, fruit slices, good toast and satisfying coffee. quick service and nice vibe. what more can I ask for!! :) read more

Great brunch with live music and now the have a great patio They have live music every Friday night Saturday and Sunday music ( check their websites for a full list of what band will be playing when) They have nice vegetarian options such as avocado toast, California Benny, banana bread French toast. They don't have very many pot-based options though. They do have milk alternatives such as macadamia soy milk and almond milk. I recommend the Californian Benny. I've wanted to try The Blue Chair café for years but somehow it didn't happen. Today I needed to head out to be in the same general area as the Blue Chair and upon seeing their sign I decided that today I will finally try it out. Some of my assumptions about the café were incorrect. I thought it would be ridiculously expensive. It wasn't. My Reuben Sandwich with a green side salad cost $18.00. That's maybe $1.00 higher than average in Edmonton which isn't bad at all. My guest also ordered a coffee and a Reuben sandwich but her side dish was a corn chowder soup. We did find the Reuben to more salty than most, and too salty overall but it was otherwise quite good. The coffee was good for a non specialty coffee café; much better than you'll get at any chain restaurants but not as good as some local cafés. The service was pleasant and polite. Our server was very accommodating and offered to mix and match just about anything we wanted. We were here at lunch time so there was no live music, which is what The Blue Chair is known for. My guest was very pleased with everything and is looking forward to returning. I'll return but next time it will be in the evening so we can enjoy a glass of wine and the music. read more

Love the intimate atmosphere however, the quality of the food has certainly gone downhill since the newish owners have taken over! I have had the bison burger before this couple bought the place and it was great. Last night I tried it again, along with several members of my group. The orders came out so quickly it was amazing, but one bite of the burger revealed that it must have been cooked beforehand and not microwaved. The meat patties were so hard from this it was hard to bite and chew. The roast potatoes I chose as a side were barely warm and way over cooked to the point of being dry, like the burger. All for an overpriced $24.50, plus I was charged $5 for cheese!! Are you kidding me? I will probably go again but skip the food, since this is just the latest bad meal I've had here. read more

Brunch here is really enjoyable for several reasons. First the food is pretty fantastic. I love the eclectic amount of customers - it's like the central hub for the neighbourhood and on Sunday's they have live music. I'm a big eggs bennie kind of fan, however I'd definitely recommend the banana french toast or really any of the other options for brunch. The groups I've been with all selected different options and everyone was very satisfied with the flavour, taste and size of the meals (I believe there was some OMG moments with the first group I was with). Reason I'm only giving 4 stars... Depending on which server you get, you can customize your eggs bennies. Today was not that case but it was still really delicious, however with the cost I pay it would have been nice if they could have added the spinach too. Which leads me to the fact that I find the cost to be a bit on the higher end of what I'd like to spend on brunch. Like I've mentioned above, the portions are big so I'm good knowing this. However, the last two times I've been here there was cups on the table that gave us the questionable is this dirty/unusable feeling (we ended up having to switch our own mug this time). Also, as this brunch was a catch up with an out of town friend, I would have liked to feel like we weren't subtly being told to leave. I waited so long for my refill of tea pot without having any more water offered to refilled, I kind of felt like we were forgotten about (and the place was only half full today). Update: still consistently good with taste and portion sizes. It was fairly quiet in there for a Saturday (which I was quite surprised about as I've been here several times last year on weekends) but it was a nice perk as the four of us had no problem hearing the conversation at the table. What a cute and funky space! We checked it out for a Saturday brunch, but it's definitely on the list as somewhere I'd want to come back. Service was fabulous! I cannot say enough nice things about our server - she was so pleasant and a joy to interact with. I ordered the fruit and yogurt ($12) and it came with 4 half slices of banana bread, and a dish with fruit salad, Greek yogurt and granola. (It's January - the month I'm still trying to make healthy choices. Don't worry. It won't last.) The fruit salad, yogurt, and granola was delicious - and surprisingly filling. The bread was just ok. It was cold so I asked for it to be toasted, and when it was warmed, I smothered it in butter (See? Already unhealthy.) It was a denser banana bread than I'd normally prefer, but I liked it as the accompaniment to the rest of the dish rather than normal bread. The smoked salmon benny ($18) was a thick piece of rye, smoked salmon, loooots of hollandaise and capers topped with 2 eggs - served with sliced fruit and baby potatoes. It was delicious, but I think for the price it would be better to have two toasts, and a bit more salmon. Lastly, the Alfajores ($12) was over the top delicious. Melt in your mouth shortbread cookies sandwiched with Dulce de leche, served with a scoop of ice cream and drizzled with more dulce. Indulgence at its finest. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside the Blue Chair Cafe is a world of food and music. I went for brunch, and found some rather unique options on the menu, including Pad Thai (apparently the place's signature dish), a bison burger, various formations of Eggs Benedict, and other breakfast-type choices like blueberry pancakes and banana French toast. I ordered rancheros done vegan style (grilled tofu instead of meat, and no cheese or sour cream). What I got was a mountain of black beans, tofu, salsa, pico de gallo, and lettuce piled high on warm corn tortillas. I ate it like salad, with a knife and fork, as trying to formulate my own wraps would have been too messy a prospect. I can say that the meal was satisfying and delicious, and also appropriate for celiac diets. My brunch mate had the frittata with cheese, vegetables, and bacon. It was served with baguette and fresh fruit. The frittata, which has basically an open-faced omelette, was large and cheesy and full of fillings. In fact, he was a bit put off at the variety of vegetables that lay within (not being a fan of eggplant or zucchini), but less critical frittata fans will savour it. I ordered a side of Blue Plate's famous roasted potatoes. Basic and delicious, they were baby potatoes in their skin. I wish they were served with more of the brunch items! Because of its out of the way location, it was much less busy than other establishments serving weekend brunch. It is not huge on the interior, but not tiny either, and features local artwork on the wall and a stage that is often occupied by musicians from a variety of genres. I have my eye on the blueberry pancakes and the vegetarian Pad Thai (but not at the same time), so plans for a return visit are in the works. read more

I've been to the Blue Chair on two occasions because I was lucky enough to receive a couple of gift cards. I'll break the review down into the two visits. First visit, midweek dinner around 6pm. There were a couple of other tables occupied. We went on a night when there wasn't anyone performing. Ellie was our waitress and was the epitome of a cool hippie all grown up. I really liked her. I love the funky light fixtures of different shapes and colours hanging all over the ceiling, and I love the cool art everywhere, even in the bathroom. But onto the most important thing, the food. I ordered the turkey curry ($17) and Dave had the pad Thai ($16). Mine was good, but lacked any spice or real kick. Served with rice and roti, the whole plate was mostly bland with the exception of the mango chutney that came with it. I tried a bit of pad Thai and it wasn't really my style, but I've never really liked any pad Thai I've tried, so that's more my issue. Second visit, again midweek. No other diners in the restaurant from start to finish. A different, younger waitress. She was ok, but no Ellie. I find it odd when I say thanks to a server (filling up water, etc.) and they say 'no worries' 'no problem' 'not a worry'. I wasn't worried, just saying thanks. You're welcome will do. This time we both ate the bison burger ($15). Mine with salad, his with roasted potatoes. I have to say I was impressed with the size of the salad - it took up half of the plate. The dressing was a simple vinaigrette, but was also sort of bland. I liked the burger at first, but as I was getting through it I liked it a little less. Again it was good and it was probably just a preference thing for me, but there wasn't much on it condiment-wise, so by the end all I could taste was pure meat. I really like the atmosphere at Blue Chair and I think it would be a great place to visit when they have live music, but I felt really disappointed in the food. Everything on the menu sounded great and everything I tasted was just average. I know they're trying really hard, but I think they could kick it up a notch in the kitchen. The food took a little long to come out and the glasses for water are tiny yet they only offered a refill once. I had the bison burger which was decent. It was tasty but the ciabatta was probably the best part of it as it was soft and fresh. At the end of the day the wait staff had poor communication as I was definitely surprised when the bill came. The menu states that the burger is served with potatoes. I also wanted a salad as well. Perhaps it was my mistake reading the menu but it was my understanding that the salad would be an extra $2 to add. I confirmed this with my server, or at least I thought I did, as did everyone else in my party. It was true I got the salad for $2 extra but I didn't get my potatoes as they charged an extra $3.50. Apparently you can't get the salad with the side of potatoes. This is what we gathered after the server tried to explain but left us even more confused. She basically said she did me favour by not putting me down for the full salad at $11, but rather did the substitute for the potatoes and then charged me the side of potatoes. Gee, thanks. The decor is very cool as well- love that the salt and pepper shakers are different on every table, the menus are old record cases. Looked like fantastic local art on the walls. We had the bean dip, which I highly recommend! Just needed a few more chips. The vegetable lasagna was amazing! The fresh salad with it was so tasty. We also had the bison burger- very delightful. Our friends ordered the salmon which looked incredible as well. Very excited to come back and try to desert menu as well which looked very good. With live music events most nights it looks like a great set up. You would pay the cover charge in advance to hold your table. The night we went the event was completely sold out. There is light jazz Sunday mornings for brunch, no reservations unless your a group of more than 6. Otherwise it is first come first serve. I landed in Edmonton on a Friday morning, and was searching for a vegan friendly place to grab breakfast. Blue Chair's weekend brunch menu looks extremely accommodating, however their weekday menu is limited for plant based eaters. I chose to go lunch style and order the vegan friendly 'pad thai', as noodles and peanut sauce are something that is pretty hard to go wrong with, right? I'm a person who likes sauce, but when the plate put in front of me, I even thought it was an obscene amount of sauce. Not only that, but the sauce is not even remotely tasty. It is supposed to be a "peanut coconut" sauce, that tasted more like a bad curry with a lot of pepper in it, and some peanut. I live in one of the most expensive cities in Canada, if not the most expensive, and while I'm gobsmacked by the price of eating out in Alberta, I have no problem paying for great good. I do have a problem paying almost $20 for something that cost $2 to make, with a few strings of carrots, zucchini, rice noodles, and tofu, the mark up on the vegan pad thai is ludicrous. I would expect to pay that if I ordered it with free range chicken, or ocean wise seafood in it! Sorry folks, missed the mark on this one! read more

Brought in a friend from Calgary for Brunch. Firstly, the service, decorum and the music were great. Friendly people. Had the salmon eggs Benedict for a ridiculous 22 dollars. Two poached eggs and salmon on soggy regular toast, with 4 tiny slices of fruit. Seriously? I thought there was a mistake. My friends had the regular breakfast for 18 dollars, and as my friend from Calgary said, there's more plate than food. Another person counted the small potatoes on their plate. "5". One person wanted to order a Mimosa, 200ml for 16 dollars! No one sells a Mimosa for that price and that small. How is Blue Chair so off base and blind to this? Far more gourmet options for the same or less, such as a Mimosa flight for 15 dollars at Dog Patch. We all left hungry and will not come back, as they are way out of touch. read more

Big shout out to all of the yelpers who wrote reviews about this place already. I was meeting with some old friends for breakfast and they wanted a new place to go to that wasn't IHOP. This place sounded pretty awesome based on those reviews and we definitely didn't leave disappointed. It's a little bit out of the way - we thought we were going the wrong way because we had to drive through so much residential before we got there - but it's a cool little surprise in the Richie neighbourhood. Our waitress was really nice, the food was amazing, and the live music was an added bonus. Quick service (relatively - it was super busy in there as it was Sunday morning) and my banana bread french toast was a fruitful eating experience. My table mates all loved their dishes too. The bacon here, I'm not sure what to say about it. There's something special about this bacon. It's somehow better than normal bacon, which I didn't think was possible. I love that there usually is live music and the music complements the ambiance.. we are always still able to have a conversation. This place always looked intriguing in the Vue Weekly, but we had to wait until our finances improved before we could eat out again. I was recently thumbing through The Tomato and discovered that they have a new chef from Guadalajara, Mexico. It so happens that one of the fellows I work with is from Guadalajara, and I thought he and his wife might like a taste of home, so I suggested it to him. He was very enthusiastic, and said we should go this weekend. Sounded like a great idea, so we decided on brunch. Unfortunately, his wife got sick, so they weren't able to make it. Allan G and i decided to enjoy ourselves anyway. For drinks, I had their house coffee, and Al had a big London Fog. Both good. Al had the Salmon Benny, and although the Huevos Rancheros and Banana Bread French Toast were both screaming my name, I got the Blueberry Pancakes with Bacon. Wow. Al was impressed at the amount of salmon on the benny. No skimping with the more expensive ingredient, so he was very happy with it. I got three huge pancakes studded with blueberries, and 3 strips of thick, amazing bacon (I think it had maple flavoring -- delicious! Also nice and crispy). The fellows set up for the live jazz-- keyboards, drums, and standup bass. You're asked to tip the band whatever you can afford, so we gave them a healthy tip. I am giving the Blue Chair a 2 because for the food, however for the vibe and music, it definitely deserves a 4--no, I can't cut it down the middle because I am writing about the food, not the other stuff. To put it honestly, it is a great place for wine/beers (not sure about the drinks), the local Alberta music and folks that come in from other parts of Canada, however, the food -- though I noticed a couple of bookshelves of cookbooks--well, based on our culinary experience....the appetizers with drinks are best and the most enjoyable. For the meal, I ordered the "Table d'Hote" which included the Gumbo and the dish, the "Accidental Tourist". The gumbo was good, a nice little bowl to have on a chilly night (this was back in January 20, 2012--sorry folks, it's been a BUSY winter with work and renovations). The "Accidental Tourist" (and yes, the name does conjure up a few images)....not so interesting, at all. It was a chicken enchilada with black beans and rice....done. Nothing to write home about, nor go into detail about. On the other hand, my companion's Ceviche appetizer was quite good and very fresh tasting and his Vegetarian Pad Thai was good....not as good as the Ceviche, but better than my "Accidental Tourist" for SURE. For dessert, we ordered the "Chocolate Pate" which was very nice....thank goodness. One thing that I must note is that their website has changed since I last checked and their menu is MUCH more interesting....for this reason, we'll go back to upgrade (I hope) the rating I am giving it based on my January outing there :-] As well, you need to know that if you go and there is music, you must buy a ticket for the music part of the evening when you reserve a table....if not, you HAVE TO LEAVE before the music starts...something we found out when we called for reservations. The food is awesome in this place, but it's the BALANCE that makes it truly incredible - the music is usually at a level where you can sit and listen but still carry on a conversation w/o yelling over the bass line or percussion. Food is an eclectic mix too - had the Ceviche Peruano, which we had last summer in Lima many times and this stuff was pretty damn authentic! We also tried the Mushroom Crostini which was also amazing - this is probably the best place for live music and great food in the city! Went there for brunch today, and I was very impressed. The atmosphere was nice and casual and the food was fantastic. I had the California Benny and I must say it was the best benedict I have ever had. The hollandaise was a perfect balance of sweet and savory with a nice aftertaste of anise. the bacon was good and crispy and was really well smoked. The music was loud enough to enjoy but not so loud as to impede conversation. The wait staff was friendly and engaging as well. Uh oh.... This has been one of the places that I consistently recommend for an evening out with food, vino, music and friends. Last night makes me sad. The music was lighthearted and fun, with some solid jazz players. The vino was outstanding (their selection is VERY reliable). The friends were fun as always. The place was crowded, sold out night likely with the valentine's weekend peeps. Not enough staff to cover the floor well and it showed. I really liked our server, but but the time we were offered a second bottle for the table we were long tired of waiting. Similar wait time for dessert menu and then dessert order and then the dessert. The biggest problem was my order. After discussing vegetarian options, I went with the pad thai recommendation. The first bite of shrimp was a surprise (perhaps a stray?) the piece of chicken in the next made it clear the dish in front of me was not what I ordered. I consider myself a flexitarian - I eat meat, but usually prefer vegetarian meals. Service was so slow I ate around the meat and enjoyed the peanuty sauce, but this is a major faux pas for a vegetarian and vegan friendly spot. My hubby thought the goat curry was not as good as it has been in the past and the vegetarian lasagna also ordered at our table didn't get finished. The pavlova had the consistency of a sponge toffee (brittle and crispy) - pavlova is supposed to have a crispy shell and soft and marshmallowy on the inside. The fruit was on the side (usually in the centre or on top in a bed of cream) and was served with rinds on the melon & pineapple without a knife. The whipped cream clearly came from a can, skimpy lines with nozzle marks - at least they could have tried to disguise it! I sincerely hope this was just an off night, the owners are fantastic supporters of original music and have great taste in wine. Including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options shows a dedication to keeping customers happy. If only the execution met the expectations. read more

The blue chair is one of Edmonton's truly unique restaurants, namely because it's run by unique people who put their passion where their business sense was. The Blue Chair is a great restaurant and a fabulous venue for live music. They serve dishes from around the world, gathered from their extensive travels. The music played here can be anything from folk and blues, to Latin and strings. Cover charges vary and are reduced with dinner. It's a great evening out with a group or partner. I've had the curried goat, which was amazing, and they also have great starters like edamame, salad wraps and ceviche. Prices are a bit higher, but worth it for the atmosphere, and they're still less than if you went to a fine dining restaurant downtown. Linger and digest your meal over live music and make it a whole evening. read more
