Loved the atmosphere here, nice and cozy, almost like going back home to grandma's house. The waitress was very accommodating even with all of our special requests. The fish and chips were amazing, including 2 large fillets with a light crispy coating. The fries were also above par. We booked a table for a bachelorette party and had a great experience overall. Everyone enjoyed their meals and the drinks were pretty good. We had two older guests and the high top chairs got to be a bit much. We were surprised that we knew most of the music (slightly older group :p) when it turned into a club around 10:30. The music did seem to get progressively louder starting around 9 which made it difficult to hear conversations, but we enjoyed that we didn't have to go somewhere else to dance after dinner. I personally had the Mac and cheese with garlic sourdough. The sourdough was incredible! I also had an aperol spritz and espresso martini which were pretty good overall. Also the decor was very fun. The Common is a nice dinner choice for a spot that is still downtown but not in a really busy central area. There are a few street parking spots and a paid parking lot close by. I recommend making a reservation on the weekend as it does get quite busy. The music is great with low lighting and cool decor throughout. There is a mix of low and high top tables. The menu is varied all the way from truffle popcorn to start, to tacos, burgers and perogies. The serving sizes are generous and pricing ranges from about $15-18 a dish. We tried the jalapeno and cream cheese perogies with pickled onions, they were fantastic! Highly recommend trying those for a rich and creamy dish. They also have an extensive cocktail menu with the highlight being a negroni bowl. This is a large crystal punch bowl to serve a minimum of 3 people (I would recommend 4-5) and costs $55. It was really good and well worth the price. There are also several local beers on rotation with a good assortment of sour beers. The servers are always very friendly and drinks/food come out quickly. Later in the evening on the weekends they usually have a DJ with a dance floor opening up. This was our first visit here and I was so impressed. The vibe is super trendy while being very comforting at the same time. Service was friendly and efficient. Bottles of wine are half price on Wednesday which was a score for us. We ended up ordering way too much food as the portions were huge! The charcuterie board was an amazing price for how much we got. Special tacos of the day were birria and absolutely delicious. The poutine had a red wine gravy which has a distinct different flavour from others but I enjoyed it a lot. The wings were just ok for us as the sauce was drizzled on them instead of tossed. The dill dip with them was great though. I would give this place 3.5 stars if it was an option. I walked into the restaurant and the guy at the door told me to walk back down the sidewalk and enter in the other door on the left side of the patio. I walked in and I think on weekends it must be a bar atmosphere since they scan your ID at the door. I went to pickup my takeout order which was right at the counter to where I originally walked in 2 minutes before... smh. Anyways!! I ordered the beef stroganoff which was pretty delicious. I would recommend eating that dish in-house as the panko egg gets soggy when taken to-go. There was a lot of food in this dish, the sauce was tasty and they are generous on the beef. Soooo good. I really love The Common, although I have to admit, I usually visit in the early to late afternoon, so I can't speak to the late evening and music scene. This place is definitely on my list of places I need to eat at more often. Food = excellent, without fail, creative & delicious Ambiance = excellent, relaxed but classy pub Service = pretty darn good, friendly, no pretense I was especially impressed with The Common during downtown dining week. The dishes themselves, along with comparatively low price and larger quantity than similar venues, were outstanding. Loved the duck confit, wow! We came back once and recommended it to everyone. I also appreciate how every year the Common puts out a new offering, versus so many other downtown staple restos offering unimaginative fare for "executive" meal prices. As a happy hour sip & appy person, I feel I'm missing out on the meal offerings here, especially as many items are seasonal. There's always something new to try. Had dinner with my girlfriend there last night and enjoyed the food. We finally got to experience their patio and I really liked it. It's on such a busy street, I enjoyed that it was fenced in with a high fence! We combined the cauliflower pizza, the crab/pineapple dish and the lettuce wraps. What we did was basically combine all three dishes to make one. That made our night and was delicious! However, the cauliflower pizza and the crab/pineapple thing would have been very weird to eat alone. The crab/pineapple dish doesn't come with any crackers or anything, so it's kind of like a dip, but with nothing to dip with? I can't imaging eating this dish with just a fork and knife... it's a bit strange. However, I loved how we did it. Pineapples need to be in everything. Drink menu is very great! They have an entire menu filled with local breweries! Very cool. Service was OK. We barely saw our server and had to track him down so we could eventually get our bills and leave. So, I've never been to The Common even though it's been around for years. Located close to Pampa's and neighbours to newly opened sister restaurant Grandin Fish 'N' Chips, we decided to check them out during Edmonton Downtown Dining week. Shocking that EDDW has been around for 14 years - it seems to get worse each year. Anyways, one thing The Common has going for it is it's music. DJ was in the house spinning some sweet beats; hip hop and r&b is my jam. It's hard to hear though, which must be why most couples/dates were sitting side by side rather than across. They have some decent daily specials along with happy hour (3:00pm-6:00pm). We came on a Thursday and it was 14 oz domestic draught pours for $4.50. Oddly enough, our waiter never mentioned it. We went with one of the dinner menus as the lamb shank itself normally costs $25.00. Yikes. Normally, I don't complain about service but hoooooooly crap, our waiter was brutal. He brought out our bill before we got our dessert. Seems he somehow forgot we never got it. When I asked him, he replied "oh, do you want it?"; uh, yeah bro, otherwise I wouldn't be asking you. I could complain some more but let's just hope it's not a common occurrence. - Smoked trout ($19.00) - trout was tender, nicely smoked but the rest of the ingredients didn't add much to the dish. Dill is great with fish but there was only a few springs. The beets, pumpkin and apple were tasteless. The egg was sadly not oozy. EDDW set dinner ($28.00) - Kabocha squash soup - they added a dollop of sour cream. The soup was very butter squash-esque and the pumpkin seeds were an excellent addition. - Braised lamb shank - good meaty portion, mostly tender but underwhelming in flavour. The fregola is a type of pasta but more similar to say a couscous. First time trying it and I liked it. Ctina loveeeeeeed the thinly cut slices of lemon. She couldn't stop raving about that. - Pistachio torte - I guess they were going for a deconstructed baklava. It was okay but the flavour combinations didn't really gel. At least the whipped cream was fresh. Overall, I wouldn't come back for the food but what I'd come back for is their hip hop nights. It's a better place to go for drinks and dancing. Hip/exclusive vibe that wasn't very inviting. Service was good; our beverages were delivered quickly and they had a surprisingly diverse draught beer selection. Menu was more "haute" than I anticipated. I ended up ordering the risotto, which was just okay. One friend I was with ordered the Grandin fish and chips dish, which comes from the Common's sister restaurant next door. The fries were very good and deliciously salty. The other friend I was with ordered the chicken and waffle and dish, which he claims was "the most well though out" chicken and waffle dish he's ever had (the corn waffles were a nice touch) but the whole dish was too greasy and he wound up feeling sick later. Decided to bring a co-worker here for Downtown Dining Week 2016 after last year's success. Unfortunately, this year we weren't impressed with the main of Pork Belly Consommé. We started off with a delicious warm tomato salad and honestly a giant plate of that would have been better. My friend only tried a couple bites of her main and waited 15 minutes for the waitress to come back and check on us and by then she didn't want anything else. I also have to say the Pork Belly Consommé was not yummy for me either. I usually love pork belly but this one felt like a big slab of gelatin that my spoon couldn't get through and I had not been given a fork and knife. My friend and I also didn't have napkins for the first 30 minutes and our water wasn't refilled. If this was my only visit I'd be super bummed but since last time was so great I'm hoping this was just a fluke. I really don't think this was a wise choice for the lunch main featured for Downtown Dining Week but perhaps our bowls just weren't up to snuff. read more

We were told that The Common was a place we had to try while visiting Edmonton. Everybody brought up the chicken and waffles, so we had to try them. Being from the southern US, we have had quite a few versions of chicken and waffles, so this dish would have to stand out. We walked in and sat at the bar. We were greeted by the bartender promptly. The place had sort of a hipster vibe. We ordered a few beers while we decided what we wanted. We sat there at the bar wanting to order for some time while the bartender played with her phone and goofed off. We had to tell her we were ready to order. There service was pretty bad at this point. We went with the truffle popcorn and we both got the chicken and waffles. The popcorn was amazing. Not being much of a popcorn fan, I was surprised how tasty it was. Quite savory. The chicken and waffles came out quickly thereafter. The presentation was unique in that is was served without syrup, had a slice of watermellon, and had some sort of berry sauce on the plate. We both found we loved the way they breaded and fried the chicken, very tasty. The waffles were nice and lite. They had a bacon flavor to them that made them stand out. The berry sauce complimented it well, bit we still felt the waffles needed a bit more sweetness to complete the dish. Overall, the experince was simply ok. The food was surely a 4 while the service was bad and rated a 2. I had to average the experience and give this place a 3 star rating. It was a decent place to check out, but given the service, I would likely not be back as there are better options in the area. read more

Depending on the night you can drink and have dinner or dance. It's a perfect location for after work drinks too. Half of the restaurant is turned into a dance floor on the weekend. For the downtown working crew it's also a great a place for lunch. The truffle popcorn ($6) is a great snack if you like truffle oil--I can't get enough of it. Also delicious is the steak frites poutine ($15) it's a pretty big portion and very filling so it's a good dish to share. They share the kitchen to the fabulous Grandin Fish and Chips so they feature a weekly dish. Of course, they have chicken and waffles ($18) which are pretty good, not the best in the city (that's the Sugarbowl) but pretty decent. I really wanted to give this a good review based on the buzz and positive reviews. I met my friend for some drinks and some pub food to get a buzz on and snack on. Maybe I was looking for comfort food, but became stifled by the exotic selection of appetizers such as Jackfruit sticky rice, and was a trifle disappointed when there was no wings or nachos. Maybe I just was not in an adventurous spirit and just wanted staple comfort food. After an infinite loop of processing the menu, I narrowed on the truffle oil popcorn based on the earlier Yelp reviews. Yes, it was fluffy, light, and flavourful with the truffle oil, but in the end...Its popcorn. Our server was prompt, and attentive, but one teeny piece of feedback: When asked about what beer was on tap, try and engage the customer by reciting a few popular beers rather than prompting the customer to read the menu and make the customer feel stupid or lazy. This place has a reputation of being trendy with lots of high praise, but it did not resonate with me. Although I would like to have ordered an entree, I didn't want to stay because I felt uneasy as I found the overall atmosphere and food pretentious and overrated. The Common, for me, is like that guy you go on a date with that doesn't have an initial spark. Sure, he's good looking, a little quirky with a hipster vibe, but the first date was just okay -- good conversation, cool, but nothing exciting. Still, you give him another chance... and another... and before you know it, you're in love. I've been to The Common a few times: one for an Elite event at their old location, another for a bachelorette, another for an after-conference soiree... and finally last night, at a Girl Geek Dinner where it seems like he's pulling out all the stops, like tonight's the night he's getting lucky. The Common, when I first thought about it, seemed to be a lounge or hipster club/bar. But, really, it's a foodie heaven. There's a variety to choose from, but my fave times have all been custom off-the-menu choices, where it seems Chef Jesse Morrison-Gauthier throws the gloves off and gets creative. For the Girl Geek Dinner, there was a fantastic charcuterie platter, followed by two salads -- the standout being the duck confit with potatoes and greens -- and then quinoa melody, roasted veggies (the swiss chard was divine!) and cauliflower with breadcrumbs, squash soup with meatballs, followed by beef and salmon choices, and then two desserts: chocolate cake with sticky butterscotch and a blueberry cheesecake. Whew. I think The Common is a great place to go for a date, look at beautiful people surrounded by vintage charm, and eat good food. But it's even better when you're there to party. Want a great night spot without the clingy just-turned-18 crowd? Nothing against them, but occasionally you're going to want a nice place to mingle, talk, and still enjoy amazing music. The DJ really didn't let us down, and he kept a great mix of music to keep you moving in your seat.... or on the floor - hey, don't let us stop you! The lounge itself is fairly small, with the DJ located as soon as you walk in, seating lining the left and right walls and a simple walkway leading you straight to the bar at the back. When we went on Thursday night, there were drink specials on, and halfway through the evening, truffle popcorn was brought out for everyone to nibble on. The Common also has a fairly decent menu selection, but unfortunately that will have to wait for a follow up visit. Wow, it's about time I update my review. The Common is doing. it. right. They have a great variety of fantastic nights with different DJs, different styles of music and local bands. They have incredible, inventive food and a menu that changes and gets updated. One of my favourite events that they put on is Hip Hop Brunch, which is exactly what it sounds like. The best music paired with the best food on a Sunday is basically the perfect way to spend a day. My favourite night there is Golden Era, playing all of the old school hip hop jams. Cover for these nights is usually $7. Drinks prices are pretty reasonable! Just under $6 for a regular highball is alright in my books. The dance floor is small and always packed. The décor is impeccable, minimalist and fresh. Interesting staff with interesting personalities, good people. I always have a good time there. The Common is proof for me that Yelp really works. This venue deserves all of the five star reviews it has. I never like getting to a bar too early in the evening and finding out that awkwardly you're the only group there. However there was a charity event going on earlier in the night and it didn't take long for a real crowd to grow. At the same time, it never got uncomfortably crowded. Maybe I'm just used to being treated like garbage at most nightclubs but I was surprised by the friendly, attentive nature of the staff. The server came by our table multiple times in the night to make sure we were doing alright. It was nice knowing you didn't always need to stand by the bar the entire night to get service. Overall I found The Common was chic, fun, affordable, and unique. I will definitely be making future plans here in the future. My only critique is that I wish they had a coat check. If we hadn't snagged a table at the beginning of the night, I wouldn't have wanted to carry it around all night. read more

After reading the reviews and receiving multiple recommendations from my friends, I went there with very high expectations. We were there on a Monday night. We were greeted by the bar tender and were asked to sit our self. As I am not that much in to fine dining, I enjoyed the relax vibe and atmosphere of the restaurant. I had the watermelon mojito which was a very good not overly sweet cocktail, perfect for a summer day. Afterward we shared the Poutine with pulled pork as starter. I am glad that we shared it. The portion is huge for a starter. It taste good but nothing fantastic. For the main course, I ordered the chicken and waffle. The dish is crispy deep fried chicken breast (Cut in half and fried separately) with waffle and a disc of goat cheese with a sauce. It is probably the best chicken and waffle that I had in Edmonton. I truly enjoyed it. The service is excellent. Even though we literally burned the menu, the server tried her best, so we do not feel uncomfortable. The price is very reasonable and I will defiantly go back there. Maybe next time, with a group of friends for a drinking night. read more

Went to The Common tonight for dinner with some coworkers. I ordered the Scallops and Potatoes (the waitress's recommendation), and it was deeeelicious. Way too expensive for the quantity, but definitely not lacking on quality. We also shared the Truffle Popcorn as an appetizer - because all the Yelp reviews we read prior to going said it was a must. Definitely delicious, and a cool item for a restaurant menu. Go at happy hour when it's $4 instead of $8 though, because a bowl of popcorn isn't worth almost ten dollars in my opinion. Overall, it was a pricey bill, but the atmosphere was very cute and chill, and the food was very very yummy. Place. Unique environment that feels off the beaten path in downtown Edmonton. I really liked the feel of almost being in someone's house in a nice upscale way. Beer and wine selections is exceptional - local brews and a variety of wines varietals. Here the starters are killer. Have the calamari, cheese and bread (with awesome smoked grapes), korean lettuce wraps, and of course the white gravy poutine. All worth ordering and the price. Entrees were a bit of a disappointment. Our party had the burger (which was really dry and didn't hit the asian flavors that they were going for), chicken meatballs (again here, dry and lack of flavor), veggie dumplings (just nothing special), and tuna tartar with colorful wheat puffs (kudos for the color but the dish needed flavor). I visited The Common for the first time ever this week, as I was a panelist for an interVivos event (also my first) being held there. I decided to get there early to enjoy some supper before the event and to really check the place out. I have heard so many good things about it. It's very small and fills up very fast. Many of the tables were reserved, so I would recommend doing this for supper or at least getting there early. My server was a delight, making suggestions and answering my questions. I finally decided on the Beef Duo which had two medallions of steak and a chunk of braised beef rib. The rib was fork tender and full of complex flavours, while the steak was done to perfection. The meat had a gravy giving some needed moisture, but also became gelatinous rather quickly. The meal was served with roasted vegetables which were fresh and colourful, as well as a large portion of crispy shoestring fries. It was as attractively presented as it was delicious. The Common has a huge drink menu, excellent drink specials during Happy Hour, and hosts a number of events in its party room. I would describe The Common as a gourmet pub. The menu may be small, but it is excellent and the place has a really great vibe. read more

What an eclectic little lounge in downtown! The chic decor and warm lighting really puts you in the mood. A friend and I came here to enjoy a drink and dessert. Our server was very friendly and made sure we knew about the half price wine (Wednesdays)! We also ordered the lavender crime brûlée and it came with pop rocks on it, which I thought was very interesting. The pop were were green which really stood put against the creme brûlée. While the drinks were a little expensive ($12 for a martini) I really enjoyed the ambiance of the lounge. It felt like I was in a scene on SATC, a little lounge in the heart of NYC. I was very impressed with my visit to the Common! I had been wanting to dine here forever, but never seem to get around for a visit. I had dinner on a Saturday night and made reservations in the afternoon for a party of four. That's right folks. They take reservations on weekends! But, the neat thing was that it really wasn't packed on a Saturday night, which is convenient if you're looking for dinner without a line. I had a spinach salad with breaded sweet potato dimes with dollops of pesto. Very delicious. Also, they serve a fish and chips dish for their partner neighbour restaurant, Grandin Fish & Chips. However, their menu seems to be always changing, so you can check out what is new! They also have an extensive drinks menu and great little patio area. Plus, large windows inside, if you want a semi-patio environment without being outside. They also have another space in the basement which I have visited for private events. I've been here more frequently for special events (such as Edmonton Girl Geek Dinners) than I have for other reasons but still, I adore this place! I really ought to go more frequently just to check out their food menu (so likely for dinner rather than for the dancing though I hear that the dancing can be really great too). Remembering the restaurant that used to be located here before it became The Common, this is aesthetically more attractive too. And then the food is utterly amazing. You want a good restaurant, you've got it. The Common has such amazing culinary range. There is so much delicious food to try when you eat here that it is hard to choose! I've had great experiences interacting with staff and feel that the place has just the right ambiance. Even when the place gets hopping late at night I know that my friends have had a great time dancing, which leaves a good impression. read more

It took me awhile to realize I should take a picture- we were so busy munching on the extra-hot delicious popcorn...so the bowl was half empty by the time I snapped it- or should I say "half-full". We got 4.5 cups of popcorn for less than theatre prices- but better than theatre taste. I don't think I could do better at home.(although now that I've tried truffle flavour, I might). Many of the customers had sleeve tattoos, so I was glad I had worn a jacket to cover up my lack of coolness. We were there on a busy Saturday night, but the wine was good ( I chose our server Rilea's recommendation of a slightly effervescent, fruity white from Portugal , and my guest had the Malbec. Our meals were good- I appreciated the dairy free and gluten free choices on the menu. The fish was done with corn flour instead of wheat. Very crunchy. More than enough food, and the brussel sprouts were delicious too. The other meal was petite steak with roasted bone marrow- also delicious, although I think the steak may have been a sirloin, not filet. It came in two-or-three-bites sized portions, and there were 6-8 of those-so plenty of food. Again there were Brussel sprouts as well as some well-cooked roasted baby potatoes- I prefer mine less cooked but they were still good. We were going to take a dessert to go, but they said it didn't do well when transported. We had a great time and although our server was super-busy, she still gave us a little chat at the end of our meal. I've been to The Common perhaps a 1/2 dozen times and so past due recommending. After a day of unusual events I had to wait somewhere for my ride and ended up at The Common. Nicole took my order and soon my frazzle turned to mellow and I was again blown away by the fantastic food, drinks, service and atmosphere. I had heard rave reviews about The Common's award winning chicken and waffles, so I had to try them. The "summer version" of this dish is so good!! Fresh, homemade waffles come with juicy, battered chicken, goat cheese, berry sauce, and watermelon. I feel like I could eat it at any time of day. The less popular "winter version" comes with a bacon apple chutney instead of berry sauce and goat cheese. The waitress told me they haven't decided if they'll bring back the winter version, due to demand for the summer ones. This time however, I tried the tempura green beans and sweet onion soup. Both really good! Loved the soup especially. Pub-like interior with hipster vibe. Small patio and calm atmosphere during the day, but also has loud tunes and a dance floor later at night. This venue is great for so many different reasons. Restaurant version: the food is absolutely delicious! You'll find things you won't make at home; isn't that the whole idea of eating out?! The food is also presented really nicely. Bar version: there's almost always a DJ playing beats here. It can get pretty packed and loud by 730/8ish. By 10/11 the area in front of the DJ opens up as a dancing floor. You'll find all kinds of music but I feel like the most common is hip hop. Hip hop brunch is super cool! Events venue version: I've been to events that close off the one side and you can use the sound and screen system. They also cater the event with delish foods and the bar is separate as well. It's perfect! I suggest going to the Common for happy hour and late dinner then heading to 9910 (in the basement) for late night drinks! Parking can be annoying in this area but there's a parking lot further down 109th towards the bridge that has space and I've yet to see cars ticketed in the evenings (am I allowed to tell people to break the rules?! Hehe) Service can be great or average but remember how chaotic, busy and loud it gets. Give your server some slack! read more

My husband and I rarely find ourselves "out", but The Common is such a special place if your looking to grab a glass of wine and share some great eats! They regularly have live music and the atmosphere here is beautiful. Vintage and upscale with some fabulous art and decor. The truffle popcorn is to die for!!! read more

I went to check out the new Wet Secrets /Bent Stick Brewery Hopstache beer launch at the Common. Super fun secret show and a delicious meal. I had the Spaghetti Squash Lasagna (served with Caesar Salad and Garlic Toast). It was flavourful and filling. Generous portion. A great comfort food meal. I had one of the new cocktails a bourbon and cold brew based Boulvardier. It is one of my favourites on the menu right now. The restaurant was busy, a mix of people in to check out the show and support the new beer collaboration and other general public who happened to just be there on the same night. The staff as always, are upbeat, super friendly and made great recommendations. read more

The atmosphere at The Common is lovely; it's well lit and not too crowded. They don't play loud music (at least not around lunch), and their dinnerware is just TOO CUTE (their plates all seem to be different vintage looking designs. it's like a pinterest wedding setup) The food, however, is kind of meh. Actually, the Korean Pork Lettuce Wraps were amazing - those I would really really recommend. The flavours were interesting (and actually NOT very spicy, like I thought it would be), and the pork was cooked to perfection. But the Crispy Chicken Sandwich I had was pretty meh. The bun wasn't that great - it seemed fresh enough but had kind of a spongy texture to it. The chicken was nice - it seemed like pieces off a rotisserie and then lightly breaded rather than a solid breast of chicken that was fried, so that was nice. But overall, it really lacked flavour. I don't know what it needed (well, a better bun to start), but it needed something. As a side I got the house salad and I did not like it all. I found it to be exceptionally bland and overtly bitter. It consisted of a bitter type of lettuce (arugula?), celery, grapes, and radishes. There just seemed to be no flavour to it.... it was as tasteless as it was colourless. Several other people at my group agreed - literally nobody seemed to like the salad. Anyways, 3 stars because they seem to be on the right track and some of the food came out good (the fish and chips looked amazing), but overall, I wasn't really impressed. I was at The Common recently for the launch of the Third Harmonic collaboration and had a great time. The beer selection was excellent and The Common seems to know how to treat their beer properly, unlike a lot of other bars. I had the Grandin fish and chips there, they were top notch. If you like hazy IPAs you owe it to yourself to seek out the Third Harmonic "Get Thy Bearings" beer. So. Good. read more

I'm glad to see with all the new development downtown, this spot remains here and is as good as ever. Still one of my favourite places for chicken waffles. Whether it's a weekend brunch or dinner and a drink throughout the week, you can never go wrong coming here, With a new / improved downtown core, it's nice to still have some classics! read more

Just over two years ago, my partner and I came here for a first date. It was cute, quaint, quiet, and we've been together since. This place has a special place in my heart for this reason, but they also have great food, great service, and a great atmosphere. When we don't know where to go for dinner, we always settle on The Common because it's always good and we love it. The food here has never been bad. Whether you're getting chicken and waffles, fish and chips, the umami burger, or a bowl of some sort, everything is consistent and always yum. Appetizers are great too- truffle popcorn, tandoori calamari, brie, everything is consistent and also always yum. We went last night and had a great meal as always. Service is good, music is good, food is good. It can occasionally be busy but we've never had to wait longer than 20 minutes for a table. Overall it has always been a good experience and we'll continue coming here because we love it so much. read more
