On a low tide the captain was still able to gets us pretty close to the seal herds. Learned a bit about them too. On the way in and out there is decent scenery, big oceanfront mansions and more to see. For $45 this trip is a bargain. read more

i Yelp a lot. like, a LOT. it's not often you happen upon a business that has so many excellent reviews. i'm here to confirm that the excellent reviews are accurate. my husband and i have been on many a whale watch, but never a seal watch. knowing the weather yesterday was going to be amazing, we decided to give it a go. what to expect: free parking in a grassy area that abuts the dock. there are no bathrooms on site, but there is a port-a-potty which is very clean and easily accessible. there is some bench seating where you can hang out while waiting for your tour time. the website states you should arrive half an hour prior to your time, and that anyone who isn't there twenty minutes prior, is probably going to be left behind. knowing that, we were there promptly at 10, for our 10:30 tour. our captain (Captain Rob) started calling out party names at ten after, and, since we were all assembled, we actually ended up leaving a little early. he sat us by party in the boat, but was deliberate about instructing us where to sit, ensuring that the boat would be balanced. a note regarding the boat: at most, i would guess that the boat can seat about 12 - 14 adults comfortably. we were a party of 6 adults and two kids, so this is a pretty intimate tour. i've been on a bunch of different boats, but this was the smallest. if you are not used to being close to the water, this is a great introduction. you can expect to go at a pretty low speed as you are exiting the harbor, but you'll be going at around 25 mph when you are out, and heading toward the seals. the seals! there were so many! we did see several just bobbing in the water, as well as swimming, but we also saw huge crowds of them just hanging out on some sand bars. we could hear their braying and howling (a sign of contentment, according to Captain Rob), especially as we got close and the motor was turned off. the tour was a nice balance of history about the area, and the beautiful houses lining the shores, as well as information about the seals. you do get up close and personal, as they're often curious about the boat, so we had seals who were just feet away from us. Captain Rob- i can't say enough good things. he was incredibly nice, and developed a great rapport with not only the adults, but the two little kids (who, credit to their parents, were incredibly well-behaved). he just had such a gentle manner about him, and i felt very safe in his care. if you've never been on a seal watch, or you've never been out with Blue Claw, i highly, highly recommend. my husband and i will definitely be back, we enjoyed ourselves so much. this is a great way to spend around two hours out on the water, and appreciating a little slice of the beautiful Cape. read more

We did a private tour with Captain Rob and it was amazing. He shared so much information about the estates and history behind the islands. We were also able to see a lot of seals on the islands as well as by the fishermen. Although we didn't get to see any sharks, everything about this hour and forty five minute tour was great. We went on a seal-watching cruise with Captain Rob yesterday. Despite the fog, we had an eye-opening experience. All the way from Orleans, down to the seals in Chatham, the Captain regaled us with tales of theaters we were on and the places we were passing, as well as answering any of the questions we all had. He handled the boat masterfully in the fog and none of us had the slightest bit of worry about where we were going or how we were going to get there safely. As we approached the waters where the seals hung out, we could hear them croaking, howling, barking and moaning...quite an eerie introduction. Then, they began to appear, first singly in the water and then by the hundreds along sandbars. We coasted silently among them while Captain Rob gave us chapter and verse of their lives in the area, how they got there, what effects they were having, and what controversies their presence was causing in the community. Never once did we feel like he was being political, from one side or the other. He just provided facts about what was happening and let us interpret them as we chose. Leaving this seal colony, we continued on through Chatham waters to the Fish Pier and then by Chatham Bars Inn and the Lighthouse. He continued to provide his description while we peppered him with questions. But he always maintained a balance to it all that allowed us to absorb the words along while still getting lost in the scene around us. Then, on the trip back to Orleans, he had more stories to tell and cheerfully answered another plethora of questions for us. This was our 2nd such cruise and it will not be our last. As the Captain suggested to us, compared to the expense of owning a boat on the Cape, it is a steal to get to hire him to take us out whenever the urge arises. We could not agree more! read more

I did the seal tour, which was truly fantastic. Captain Rob was a nice guy; he was informative and friendly and gave us warnings about when the boat would speed up and when there would be spray. I expected the tour to be like a whale watch where we'd get glimpses of wildlife if we were lucky. Instead, we saw literally hundreds of seals, hanging around the boat while we drifted. They congregated around curiously, close enough that we could hear them breathing. We also saw a large variety of sea birds, and utterly beautiful bay scenery. The tour is of the bay area, and so seasickness / chop isn't really an issue, even when the boat is moving fast (which is incredibly exhilarating). All in all a great tour that I would definitely do again and recommend to anyone in the area. read more

We went on a seal tour with Captain Rob yesterday and honestly, it was about as fantastic as it gets. I honestly cannot believe how close he was able to bring us to the seals in the most picturesque settings. It was magical. He was such a great host and narrator ~ really friendly and super knowledgeable. The only downside (IMO) was how fast the boat travels (something to keep in mind if you aren't a fan of speed). That was not a highlight for me or our 7 yo daughter however, had I known this before the trip I probably wouldn't have booked it but then our family would have missed out on such an incredible experience! My family and I have done this tour about a half a dozen times. We do the beach combing and seal watch tour. Blue Claw staff is fantastic. Very knowledge and friendly. We see the seals and then have about an hour to tour a beach you can only get to by boat. Every time we do this tour we find something different. One year we found a few starfish and another we found sand dollars. This year we found starfish, small horseshoe crabs and some scalloped and conch shells. We have a great time every trip and we will be back. read more

Captain Rob made our day. We were in town for a weekend long bachelorette and booked the tour as a day time activity. He was not only incredibly knowledgeable of the area and seals, he was also so entertaining and knew just when to insert commentary and when to let us eat (or drink!).
