Dr. Pauly has been our vet for about 15 years and we think the world of her. We lost track of her when she left Northview and started seeing Dr. Romero, then when she left Northview, we started seeing Dr. Aguirre. Through a mutual friend, I was able to find Dr. Pauly again at BCAC and am so happy with the care my dogs get from her. She's now the medical director and doesn't do a full schedule of pet exams, but always gets my dogs on her calendar when we need her. In the few instances we needed immediate care, Dr. Aguirre (who is now here too!) has stepped right in. We are so happy to have this great team of caring vets and techs taking care of our pets. Huge shout out to Ketty who is hands down my favorite tech and makes me feel less stress when I need to leave my pets for a procedure. **To fully illustrate how much I love this practice, let me just say I live on the east coast for most of the year, but I still come back for vet care (obviously we have vets in our other locations, but this is our primary). It's worth the 27 hour drive. I'm sad to hear some recent reviewers have had a less than great experience and recommend they try to get in with Dr. Aguirre and/or ask for Ketty to be their tech. It will change the whole experience, guaranteed. Also, the ratings on Google are much more recent so check those out if you want current opinions. read more

Don't put your dog down here unless things are better. We put our dog down at blue cross animal clinic almost three years ago, and I still have nightmares about it. They led us to a good sized room that had a tiny throw rug that looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years, and brought the dog in and put him on it. They had completely paralyzed him and didn't even give him any happy drugs. Then they had problems with the final drug. The only thing he could do was move his eyes and look straight into my eyes to let me know how he felt. I have to live with that memory. It comes back to me every time I think about him. In a panic I found myself with a sick ailing dog that needed to be seen. When I researched the nearest animal urgent care these guys popped up. I thought wow that's great let's go. We walked in the door and there was a line. I patently waited several minutes. When it was my turn the woman at the desk stepped away but mentioned she'd help me in a minute. I said fine she passed through several times before another employee sat at the desk and helped me... They rudely turned my dog away because we hadn't been there before and claimed that they don't accept walk ins. What kind of urgent care doesn't accept walk ins?! It was unbelievable! Between the wait and the horrible service that was nail in the coffin for this place! I called around after to discover there's only 2 places in town that accepted walk ins. I'm so beyond disappointed. They definitely lost my business and I will not be returning! read more

What I like about Blue Cross Animal Clinic 1. Their philosophy is less is more so won't order unnecessary tests or charge you an arm and a leg like ABQ Pet Care does. 2. You don't have to wait in the lobby with lots of other animals. They take you right back to a room. 3. If it is a serious problem, they will get you in soon. 4. Gouging clients by adding a $15 fee for "technician appointment" on top of the $32 charge for Anal gland express. The time spent on the anal gland expression was less than 5 minutes per dog. So two dogs getting a 'butt squeeze' cost $101.08. To top it off, the tech was not on time for the appointment. We had to wait in addition to being gouged by their excessive fees. Other issues involving techs include: -Failure to properly bandage a dog after mass removal check up. -Two techs put a large dog with back issues on top of the small exam table then both techs left the room. Hard to keep a dog in pain on a small table all by yourself for 40 minutes. Finally called the clinic to remind them we were there. One would think one of the techs would have stayed until the Vet arrived or come to check on us during that 40 minutes. The Vet was tied up by an emergency. Their tech services are neither worth the money nor the wait. read more

This is a public service announcement. There are two types of Zyrtec. One is good for treating allergies, and the other will kill your dog. Unfortunately the vet at Blue Cross Animal Clinic didn't clarify this fact. I discovered my mistake in the middle of the night after calling pet poison control, driving to Roadrunner Animal Hospital in Algodones, and a $4,500.00 vet bill. Please be on your game when you visit Blue Cross Animal Clinic, because the vet that treated my dog's rash (yes, a rash is what started this nightmare) was not. I am new to Albuquerque and BCAC was recommended by a friend. I was extremely disappointed. The communication was terrible. When I was in the examination room, I felt like a bump on a log. No questions about my dog's temperament, likes, dislikes, etc. I think the lead tech spoke 3 words to me while the second tech seemed extremely inexperienced--she put my dog in a very loose and casual hold for a blood draw. They kept my dog on the floor and never invited me to help handle her. My dog did nip the inexperienced tech who was not holding her correctly when the lead tech poked her for a blood draw. I thought that the nip would provoke some discussion, but not at all. I also noted that no antiseptic was applied to her wound, which was bleeding onto the floor. When the lead tech and vet returned, the tech slapped a muzzle on my dog without any discussion with me. In all my years of working with vets and tech in connection with animal rescue and my personal animals, I've never seen that. I asked if it was BCAC policy to muzzle dogs without any discussion with the owner. I never did get an answer to that question. I do understand that muzzling may be necessary in some situations, but never without discussion. Next, I was told that BCAC failed to get all of my dog's medical records. This is something I could easily have addressed at any point, but during the last 5 minutes of the appointment was too late. I was told that they would call with the results of my dog's heartworm test later that day. They did not. The vet recommended a fecal sample. I agreed and was provided with a collection bottle. I returned the next day with the sample but was informed that the vet had not specified what tests he wanted in my dog's chart and that he was not available that day. No fecal test was performed. At this point, I expressed my disappointment to the front desk. They suggested that I speak with management. I had a private meeting with management and provided my feedback. At the end of our meeting, I was assured that they would look into these matters. I never heard from BCAC again. read more

I have been using Silvia Rodriquez for years, I followed her from AZTEC and I can't imagine trusting anyone else with my precious babies. I recently had to euthanize one of my cats & it was such a heart breaking but comforting experience, she just went to sleep very peacefully and painlessly. The staff @ Blue Cross is dynamite as well. I was referred to Blue Cross Animal Clinic by another vet who was overbooked and decided they could not see my urgently ill pet. The receptionist immediately required my credit card number before even asking the reason for my call or letting me know the time/date of any available appointments. She then required a $50 nonrefundable deposit to make the appointment. She also said I had to fax my pet's medical records prior to the next day or 'we will revaccinate your pet.' It was a pressure scam. Unacceptable. read more

I have loved Blue X Animal Clinic and think the Dr. Terri Wheeler is the best Vet in ABQ. 27 years with Blue X and I am moving my 5 dogs out of there. Since Ashlee Andrew bought out 6 of ABQ's Clinics it is now an experience of feeling like your pet and you are just ATM machines for greed. I am so sad about this for our community and for our pets. It feels like a high pressure sales experience and the aim is to squeeze as much as they can out of you. They now have what is called a "Medical Director" who seems to run the show. It is pet care now likened to our health care, "for profit" system and I'm voting with my feet and paws. We are done with what was a wonderful local clinic. I love the doctors and staff at Blue Cross Animal Clinic. It's really affordable for general care AND dental! I've been bringing Ollie and Ashes (my kitties) here for about a year. The only vets in town that seem to know what is going on with my cat and how to treat him are here! They are very knowledgeable, friendly and they genuinely love animals. They treat them as if they were their pets and make decisions on treatments, etc. as such. I've only ever had an issue one time with a lengthy wait and that was an honest mistake. I recently rescued a Corgi from the pound and brought him into Blue Cross for his Wellness check-up and they were gentle, calm, assertive, and kind; all of which made my previously-neglected dog (and me) very comfortable and happy. Do your loyal companions a favor and take them to Blue Cross for their care. read more

My partner and I were initially excited to find a vet clinic for our dog that is close to home and has great reviews. After two visits, we were left very angry, shaken, and disappointed with our experience here. During our dog's first visit, I was told by Dr. Smith that our dog was getting close to obese and needed to go on a diet. I thought it was odd as his previous vet had made no mention of any issues with his weight, but I purchased a weight management food there so that we could follow the plan that Dr. Smith laid out. Later in the day I called to ask additional questions/confirm a couple of things I was told during the visit, to make sure we had the correct information. I spoke to the tech, Morgan, who had helped with the visit that morning, explaining that I was nervous during our visit (our dog was scared and panicking), and just wanted to clarify a few things. I was told by her during our calls that I had the amount of food our dog needed to eat each day incorrect, and it should be half of what I had mentioned (1.5c/day of the new food, instead of 1.5c, 2x/day). Note, we typically gave him 1c, 2x/day of his normal food. We gave that amount for three weeks until our next visit. At the second visit, I brought up his diet and asked if any adjustments needed to be made, as he seemed to have lost a lot of weight (there was about an 8lb. difference during his initial weigh in and the second visit weigh in). When Dr. Smith mentioned maybe bringing him up to 2c for one of his feedings, I told her that I had been told it was 1.5c/day, and that we had been following that by doing 3/4c in the morning and again at night. Dr. Smith checked the notes from the first visit and just said that the amount I was told when I called was incorrect, and that his food could be increased. Needless to say, I was horrified at the fact that we had been underfeeding our dog for almost a month. There was no apology at all from Morgan, who was our tech again that morning, was there during the correction, and had plenty of opportunity to say something, and Dr. Smith did not say anything else about it for the rest of the visit. There was no apology or acknowledgement from her for the situation until I brought up as I was leaving that I was very upset at being told the incorrect amount when I had called back specifically to make sure that we were doing the right things for our dog. Looking back at the time between visits, my partner and I realized that some of the small changes we had noticed in our dog during those three weeks (sleepier than usual, lower energy during his walks-which we had kept at his usual amount) were maybe not the result of the heat, as we thought, but of him not being fed properly. This was confirmed after a few days of feeding him a correct amount, after which he was back to his normal happy self. Furthermore, after taking him to a different vet, we were told that even at the weight he was at during his first Blue Cross visit, given his size, he still would not have been close to obese. So, we made our poor dog miserable for nothing. While we understand that mistakes happen, this is not something that we take lightly when it comes to the health of our dog, and trying to gloss over the situation was unacceptable and unprofessional. We are thankful that this mistake did not happen with medication, or with something else that would have caused more issues for our boy. We will obviously not be returning. read more

I took my two Shibas here for primary vet care and the staff took wonderful care of them. Staff were thoughtful and friendly and service was timely and informative. We saw Dr. Philpott and she is the most informative and genuine vet we've ever had the pleasure to work with. Our 5 year old Shiba passed away from leukemia a month ago, and Dr. Philpott performed the assessment. Shelped us figure out our options when we found out about his cancer three months ago. Not only caught did she refer us to outside resources for chemotherapy, she continued to check in with us and see how we were holding up. Dr. Philpott and staff provided amazing care for our pets and helped us with any questions that arose. I've moved back to Seattle, but if I had a magic wand I'd continue utilizing their services in ABQ. We were really impressed by their professionalism as well as compassion. read more

We recently had to have our pet dog euthanized. Dr Hedberg and the staff at the clinic were exceptional to us. We were both very distraught and emotional. The staff recognized us when we came in and immediately moved us to a private room and made sure we all were taken care of. Now it all makes sense. I left a review of this place on Google and I remember this place in the past being well-regarded. Indeed the google reviews are positive, so I felt like my experience was somehow taken wrong by me. The woman who answered the phone was rude, rushed and unprofessional. She called me "hon" in a condescending tone because she seemed to think I was asking too many questions. I was pretty taken aback. I was trying to find out if I should switch my dogs to their clinic for my future vet needs. Of course I decided not to and told her so. There is nothing harder than saying goodbye to a loved one, including our pets. Blue Cross made the process of saying goodbye to our beloved great dane. The staff were kind, concerned, reassuring, and respectful. They provided privacy and hugs. Knowing that they had provided top notch care to dear Lola for her time with us, made a miserable decision, very clearly and calmly the right one. We have multiple small dogs, most of them rescues with various problems. We had been going to a chain 24-hour animal hospital staffed with multiple specialists but realized we were paying a premium for every visit because of the high overhead of that facility. Someone from Lap Dog Rescue recommended Blue Cross as caring and reasonable; we started taking all our small dogs there and have seen virtually every vet in the clinic. Every single visit has been a positive experience, as each doctor takes as much time as needed with us and our dog. read more

I took a comatose cat to Blue Cross twenty years ago. Just walked in the door and said "I have an emergency. She's diabetic." The vet scooped my cat into his arms whisked her to "the back", and 10 minutes later I had a feisty, alert, ALIVE cat in my own happy arms. I've never looked back. I've been going to Blue Cross for years. But since the takeover of this clinic by the awesomely awful ashlee andrews, the service is terrible. The receptionists can't get straight why you're booking the appointment (how do you confuse seeing a dog for a well check with seeing a dog for what the receptionist erroneously reported as issues with diarrhea, coughing, sneezing)! Andrews is rude, doesn't introduce herself, attempts to bully and dictate what you, as the pet owner, are going to do. As with many egotistical people, they think that they are the only show in town. This pervasive attitude in the office must be the reason why so many of the previous great staff have moved on or at least cut back the time they want to be exposed to this environment. So I'm voicing my opinion, not only thru yelp, but by not financially contributing to the running of this clinic by finding another vet. read more

My family has been taking our pets to the Blue Cross Animal Clinic for over 15 years and they have always been very good. I understand that they were recently taken over by another party but my recent experiences with the team have been frequent and excellent. Dr. Teri Wheeler is an exceptional vet and a wonderful human being. Our cat was having serious respiratory issues early this spring and Dr. Wheeler exhausted every possible basic health condition and treatment option. Her communication skills are superb. She called every week, sometimes twice a week to check in on our sweet girl. And when there was nothing else she could do and our kitty's condition was not improving she referred us to the internal medicine specialists at the VCA clinic. Unfortunately, we found out that our most beloved pet friend has feline lymphoma, but we never would have been able to give her at least some kind of treatment for comfort if it weren't for Dr. Wheelers help. Now that our diagnosis journey has come to an end and we are in the midst of palliative care Dr. Wheeler continues to be there for us. We feel more than welcome calling her with any questions or concerns and we trust that she knows what's best for our cat. I am so thankful to have her as our vet, and when the time comes we will be taking our sweet girl into to the blue cross for her release into the kitty heavens. Thank you to this marvelous team for all you have done for my best friend. read more

When I arrived, some awful music was playing in the waiting room. I asked the receptionist to turn it down and fortunately she was willing to do so. The waiting room is very echo-ey, and the staff members all seem to be loud talkers. While I waited for my cat to be seen, I could hear many loud conversations. Like many animal clinics I have experienced in Albuquerque, Blue Cross has only one waiting room for all animals. There is a corner reserved for cats, but it is not protected from the dogs. I waited 20 minutes without being told how long my wait would be. While my cat and I waited in the noisy waiting room, another cat arrived and was given a room immediately. I asked one of the receptionists how much longer I would have to wait. She went somewhere to check and after another five minutes or so came back to the desk and said she thought it would be another 5 minutes. I left the office and decided to stick with my current vet who is a 1/2-hour drive away from my home. If I had known I would not be seen until 1/2 hour later than my appointment time, I would not have had to leave work early. As expensive as veterinarians are, it does not seem to be asking too much to be treated courteously as a client. read more

This is the most caring and knowledgeable vet clinic in town. They do not push unnecessary treatment on you, explain everything very well, and give an accurate price estimate if your fur baby does need treatment. Dr. Philpot is one of the kindest and most genuine people you'll meet. She is knowledgeable, articulate and very compassionate. I would not trust my dog or my cats to anyone else. The staff is also very friendly and they all seem to be happy to be working there. The clinic is spotlessly clean and the wait time is never very long. read more

My family has been going to BCBS for many many years and brought all our animals there. We never had a problem with them until recently. I am completely FLOORED AT HOW RUDE THE VET AND THE CLINIC WAS and their NEW POLICIES. I took my dog in for a well-check up. Shes perfectly healthy and has had all her shots, (and many extra things they've peddled us over the years (we later found were unneeded). Mid-way through the appt they told me she should get this additional set of shots. I politely declined and said not at this time, we're just here for the yearly well check-up. The head vet, a woman named Dr. Wheeler, immediately started getting more and more irritated and aggressive by me declining, and told me I HAD to buy the additional shots or she would refuse to see my animals, regardless that she was perfectly healthy or not. She became very rude and actually started shouting at me that I had to buy the shots or I had to leave immediately. I never raised my voice once and was very polite, but explained I just didn't want to get them at this time, I had only made the appt for a well-check. She literally kicked me, my dog, my elder mom, and her dog out of the clinic mid exam (she had been there w/ her dog getting a checkup too in a diff room). I was completely shocked, b/c she had always been so nice before. I felt like she was kidding 1st, like this must be a joke?! It was like a bad Twilight Zone episode. We've been going there for years, she KNOWS my animals and that they're very healthy and well taken care of. My dog is 7 yrs old and perfectly healthy, (and like I said, has already had all required shots by law- I checked!, believe me). She told me we could never bring my dog there, even if she got sick or hurt and needed emergency care UNLESS I BOUGHT ALL THE EXTRA SHOTS she told us she should get. (And we already had bought a LOT from her by this time and my dog is old enough to not need them by now anyways). (Actually one reason I was hesitant, was b/c my moms dog had gotten a tumor or a cyst in him, and instead of just finding out if it was cancerous they immediately advised he get neutered "to be safe". [he wasn't neutered then b/c he is a pure bred and they had breed him a couple times as is a rare dog]. My parents did as they were told, and after the tests came back, lo and surprise he didn't have cancer and was all unneeded. It wasn't too big a deal as they were going to neuter him soon anyway probably, but he became very different after getting the operation. He became overly aggressive and acting in ways he never acted before. They couldn't even bring him to the park anymore as he would aggressively bark at other dogs. There dog is literally the sweetest, most playful dog you could ever meet. He also seemed more depressed, and he got fat. (Again, never had ANY issue w/ these things before). Another strange symptom their dog got after going there, he started yelping in pain when anyone touched his neck area, even just to pet him there, or sometimes just when he was walking or jumping. Well we think it was his neck area, hard to be positive as you couldn't see anything, but periodically, he'd scream in pain, like something was being pulled or something and it seemed around that area. My parents tried repeatedly to find out what it was and to help him, but the Vet never could figure it out and just gave him prescription pain medicine for the pain. But never fixed the issue, or even really tried that I could tell. To add insult to injury, while we were at this last appt, the vet was actually talking sort of rude to my mom b/c her dog "had gotten fat", (like it was her fault). When it only happened immediately after they operated on him for the neutering and gave him some more shots. My parents take extremely well care of their animals and this dog was well walked and played with and had a huge backyard to run in. It was obviously a hormone issue or something else that was causing it, b/c of being neutered. I just found that rude how she blamed her for it. I find it extremely hypocritical that BCBS animal clinic on Carlisle claims to help animals and yet they refuse to even see an animal that they KNOW is perfectly healthy, just b/c they don't have all the shots they want to give them. What does that matter?? If an animal is sick or hurt, you treat it! You're literally going to not give my dog any care because of this? And even if you had a point, I made this decision, not my dog. So how are you helping my dog by saying that you would literally leave her to die outside your "clinic" b/c she hasn't had all the shots? You should be ashamed of yourself calling yourself animal lovers. You have become so into the greed of the money you get from pharmaceutical companies that supply your shots and operations, that you have forgotten how to just be a good person. read more

Our puppy broke her leg one evening and they were kind enough to squeeze her in before they closed. The doctor there was very rude. Cut me off in the middle of sentences and talked to me like I was stupid. When the x-rays came back she confirmed it was broken and told us that our puppy would need a 3000 dollar surgery that she couldn't perform. As she splinted the leg she made a comment saying that she hadn't splinted a leg in years, you could imagine how uncomfortable this made me feel with her handling my dog. After we finished I had asked where we could get the surgery for cheap, she responded by saying that she doesn't know because she doesn't shop for cheap vets for her dog. With us being college students, 3000 dollars was definitely out of the question. Needless to say, we switched vets and the leg healed just fine without any type of surgery. read more

My family has been taking our pets (cats and dogs) to this clinic for as long as I can remember. We are able to request specific vets but all of the vets are wonderful so it doesn't really matter! The blue cross personnel have helped me heal my animals, keep them in tip top shape, and make hard decisions when they are necessary. They are compassionate, full of information and truly love their patients and the humans that come with them. I appreciate that I can call if my babies have an emergency, like today, and they fit us in. This saves me from expensive emergency vet visits. After 20 years, I'm moving on. Misdiagnosed my boy. That can happen. What made me most angry was how I was blown off when I told them he wasn't improving. Ended up at the emergency clinic and he died 4 days later. I called to tell the owner why I was leaving and she mentioned what their "legal" records said about the situation. This infuriated me. I never had any intention to sue. She didn't need to go there. Then she tried to blame it on the receptionist and bad communication. It wasn't the receptionist, it's the vet. She is an overconfident woman who needs some lessons in humility. Still haven't received an apology. So sorry it took my dog's life for me to get out. Won't ever go back and will tell everyone I know to not go there. read more

Absolutely despicable. I started bringing my Boston terrier here a couple of years ago - the prices have always been a little high but atleast she was taken care of. I bought her in quite a few times last year and they never let me know when she needed shots / or anything for that matter. She recently had puppies and after bleeding for six weeks and them telling me "she was just fine" I started to worry. They were also very rude during the entire experience. The vet here told me I needed to get her shots updated if I were to continue as a customer, yet they told me they wouldn't allow her to get them until the puppies are gone. I decided to take her to a new vet - to find out she needs to be put on meds for the bleeding and if it doesn't stop it could be something serious from the birth, as well as an ear infection, allergies AND they gave her all of the vaccines needed right away. Everything I've been asking blue cross for help and advice on (which I didn't get) is finally being treated. What if I would have lost my pup due to you guys not doing a thorough exam, which I'm clearly paying a pretty penny for?! read more

I have had animals (and vets for over 30 years), basically my entire life, and the team at Blue Cross Animal Clinic is the best of any place (non-specialized) I have ever had treat my pets. They are extremely kind to clients, animals and people, explain procedures in detail, try to keep fees down with suggestive options and nobody there seems to hate their job or have an attitude. I couldn't even get to the appointment part of the visit after having to reschedule because as a nurse your schedule changes. The receptionist literally sighed and got short with me after I asked if they had any cancellations to get them in sooner, because one of my lil guys has an eye infection. After this my parents told me that they were rude to them too! While waiting they went across the street to order some food, to occupy time since they stayed in the car for the appointment...these people called them no less than 20 times!!!! And then proceeded to scream at them from across the street. Now I know there's always two sides and dealing with people can be frustrating, especially with this COVID scare. But just on my account 3 times of being rude, short, flippant all before the appointment even starts?! No way you're touching my fur babies or money. From other reviews the new ownership is to blame which is a shame since it got such stellar reviews prior. I wouldn't trust my fur babies care in the hands of these people. read more
